Rangers can find McGregor heir in Pazikas

Rangers’ recent horror show at Ibrox proved a particularly galling evening for experienced goalkeeper, Allan McGregor, with the veteran Scotsman having shipped seven goals on what was a grim night for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men.

While not solely to blame for his side’s second-half capitulation, the 40-year-old had looked somewhat “suspect” against Jurgen Klopp’s rampant Liverpool side, in the words of pundit Gabby Agbonlahor.

Such a performance has been something of an anomaly in an otherwise impressive career to date – having only recently made eight saves at Anfield last week – although may well be a sign that age could finally be catching up with the 42-cap sensation.

The former Besiktas man – who had returned for a second spell in Glasgow back in 2018 – has been a reliable servant for the Scottish Premiership side over the years, racking up 207 clean sheets in 457 games for the club in all competitions thus far.

Lauded as the club’s “best ever goalkeeper” by pundit Tam McManus, the Edinburgh-born colossus remains a hugely respected figure in the Gers’ history, although on the evidence of Wednesday evening a succession plan may well be needed sooner rather than later.

The aforementioned Hutton has tipped 24-year-old Robby McCrorie to be that possible successor, while teammate Jon McLaughlin has also featured heavily in the early weeks of the season, although one other potential heir to McGregor’s crown could well be that of 17-year-old, Jacob Pazikas, with the youngster having impressed in the club’s youth ranks of late.

The teenager stopper has made six appearances in all competitions so far this term, notably catching the eye despite defeat in the recent UEFA Youth League encounters with the Merseysiders for the club’s U19 side.

The 4-1 loss last week saw the Paisley-born starlet perform ‘heroics’ to help keep the scoreline down against a rampant Reds outfit – as per the Liverpool Echo – having been particularly ‘busy’ in his attempts to keep the ruthless opposition at bay.

The Scotland U17 international was again in the sticks as the two sides played out a 4-3 thriller earlier this week, impressing early on as he made a fine save to deny former Celtic starlet, Ben Doak.

While he was not able to keep the former Celtic gem and his teammates at bay throughout the contest, Pazikas has begun to show early signs of his undoubted quality, with first-team boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst likely to be keeping a close eye on his development with the idea of potentially unleashing him in the future.

Celtic could still end up selling Carter-Vickers

Celtic could choose to sell defender Cameron Carter-Vickers ‘if the price is right’, according to former Hoops striker Frank McAvennie.

The Lowdown: CCV at Parkhead

Having played a key role in the Hoops’ Premiership and Cup triumphs whilst on loan last season, the 24-year-old signed a four-year deal at Parkhead this summer after Tottenham agreed to a £6m fee for the centre-back.

The United States international has once again impressed this term, having made eight appearances in the Scottish top-flight and a further three in the Champions League, captaining the side against RB Leipzig recently (via Transfermarkt).

The Latest: McAvennie’s claim

Having impressed and solidified his position in Ange Postecoglou’s starting XI, McAvennie has warned the Green and White fans that no player, including new arrival Carter-Vickers, can guarantee their stay at Parkhead.

Speaking with Football Insider, the former Hoop claimed:

“Carter-Vickers is doing very well at Celtic and he could not get a game at Tottenham.

“Whether it is a difference in the game down there, I think he is doing very well.

“Every team up here is a selling club, if the price is right. If you get a price that Celtic say yes then anyone will be gone.

“Every time Celtic have a good player everyone says they want to leave but I would not be too concerned about it.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/key-latest-celtic-updates-9/” title=”Key latest Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Verdict: Great signing

When looking at Carter-Vickers’ underlying stats, Celtic’s summer coup appears all the more impressive.

As per FBRef, compared with positional peers across Europe over the past year, the defender ranks in the 95th percentile for pass completion, in the 87th percentile for progressive carries and in the 83rd percentile for interceptions, showing strength and composure on both sides of the ball.

Having been dubbed ‘immense’ by BT Sport pundit Chris Sutton, the likes of the USA international will always be attracted by the lure of the big-money leagues and their clubs.

However, now enjoying his football at Parkhead after a tough time at Spurs, Carter-Vickers seems pretty far down the list of players who would be itching to move.

Crystal Palace: January move for Isaiah Jones unlikely

Crystal Palace are unlikely to sign Middlesborough right-wing back Isaiah Jones this season, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Lowdown: Jones linked with Palace

The Eagles have been credited with an interest in the 23-year-old by The Sun earlier this month. The outlet claimed that Palace have been checking up on the right-wing back and would like to bolster that area of the pitch for Patrick Vieira.

Jones, who can also play as a winger when required, has been a regular for ‘Boro this season, taking his appearance tally for the club to 64.

The Latest: ‘Boro unlikely to sell

Jones was talking to GiveMeSport regarding Palace’s reported interest in the Middlesbrough man.

He said that he has been told that an exit for the 23-year-old during the current campaign is unlikely, hinting that the Eagles may have to wait until the summer to make their move.

The journalist said of the ‘Boro player: “From what I’m told, especially on the back of Michael Carrick coming into Boro, they will not be selling him this season.

“At the end of the season, that might change, and Palace might have a chance, but for the time being, I don’t think he’s going anywhere.”

The Verdict: Get it done

Palace have an exciting young left-back in Tyrick Mitchell, so it’s good to see that the club want to address the right-hand side, with current options Joel Ward and Nathaniel Clyne both over 30 years of age and out of contract in the summer.

Jones could be viewed as the perfect addition at Selhurst Park, but he has mainly been used as a wing-back and not in a back four, so his defensive game may need some work if he is to thrive in the top flight under Vieira.

Still just 23 years of age, Jones appears to be a future star, and after winning the Players’ Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards at Middlesbrough at the end of the 2021/22 season, a Palace swoop next summer could be a shrewd one.

Sussex have signed Alex Carey, the Australia wicketkeeper-batsman, for their Vitality Blast campaign. Carey will link up again with Jason Gillespie, his coach at Adelaide Strikers, for the tournament in England, which begins after the conclusion of the World Cup.Carey is Australia’s vice-captain and first-choice gloveman for the 50-over tournament, and has been capped 38 times in the white-ball formats since debuting in 2018. He helped Strikers to the 2017-18 Big Bash title and has experience of playing club cricket in England with East Grinstead.”I’m very excited to get the opportunity to play with Sussex,” he said. “I played for East Grinstead in the Sussex Premier League a few years ago and now to play for the Sharks in the Blast is super exciting.”I’ve heard the fans are the best in the country and I can’t wait to join Dizzy and the guys in July.”A pocket-rocket batsman and tidy keeper, Carey has a T20 career strike rate of 128.93 and scored his maiden hundred in the format last year. His arrival comes after Sussex allowed Michael Burgess, who kept wicket during the club’s run to Blast Finals Day last season, to leave for Warwickshire.”We’re delighted to be able to offer this opportunity to Alex and excited for him to be linking up with us,” Gillespie, Sussex’s head coach, said. “He’s been impressive opening the batting for the Strikers in the Big Bash and now he’s getting experience in the middle order with Australia.”He can certainly clear the ropes but he’s also able to read and adapt to different conditions. That versatility will give us options on how best to utilise his batting in this year’s Blast. Alex is also a world-class keeper so to have a player like him joining the Sharks is a real coup for the club.”I know Alex well from the Adelaide Strikers and he knows Sussex well from his time playing league cricket in the county, so I’ve no doubt he’ll fit in nicely in our dressing room.”

West Brom: Lewis Cox shares response to Paul Heckingbottom claim

West Bromwich Albion have denied that the club’s social media team helped Sheffield United in their 2-0 win at The Hawthorns on Saturday, Lewis Cox reports.

The Lowdown: Heckingbottom’s comments

Carlos Corberan endured the worst possible start to life as Baggies manager on Saturday, with defeat against the Blades leaving them bottom of the Championship.

Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom admitted after the game that he was ‘pretty sure’ Corberan would go with a 3-4-3 system, adding that West Brom may have put a ‘little bit too much out on their social media channels’ ahead of the fixture. The Blades manager didn’t specify in regards to official posts, and Cox has shared a response from the Midlands club.

The Latest: Cox’s update

Cox, who labelled Heckingbottom’s comments as ‘interesting’, took to Twitter on Saturday evening to share West Brom’s response to the claim. He stated that all of the Baggies’ pre-match content was taken on Wednesday, prior to decisions from Corberan on selection and tactics.

Cox tweeted: “Albion say all pics/vids used online were taken on Wed prior to decisions on selection/tactics and that there is nothing in PH comments.”

The Verdict: Not good

Everyone at The Hawthorns would have been hoping for a new manager bounce, and even though the club are adamant that there is nothing in Heckingbottom’s claim, some posts may well have hindered Corberan and his side.

The Express and Star say that a picture on Thursday showed Corberan, ‘holding a piece of paper with scribbled writing on it, enough to make out some of its contents’, something that the Blades may have exploited to their advantage.

Corberan has a huge task on his hands to turn things around in the Midlands, with the Baggies now bottom of the second tier, and it wouldn’t come as a shock if he were to ask that social media training ground posts are toned down going forward.

O Tricolor encara o Atlético-GO na quarta-feira.

Aston Villa: Villanueva set to be confirmed as Emery’s assistant

Pablo Villanueva is set to be confirmed as Unai Emery’s assistant at Aston Villa, according to The Express and Star.

The Lowdown: Emery and Villanueva

Villanueva has been part of Emery’s coaching staff for a number of years now, beginning at Sevilla back in 2014. The former Cordoba manager has since worked with the 50-year-old at Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal and Villarreal.

The 46-year-old was classed as a technical assistant and assistant manager at the Estadio de la Cerámica, and it looks as if his association working with Emery will continue in the Premier League.

The Latest: Villa appointment

The Express and Star shared a story on Thursday morning, the day after Emery’s first training session, regarding his backroom team.

They stated that the Villa manager ‘has brought an eight-strong backroom team’ with him to the Midlands, although several members were not involved in his first training session as they ‘continue to await work permits’.

The report adds that the staff have yet to be confirmed by Villa, but Villanueva and goalkeeper coach Javi Garcia are set to be part of Emery’s team.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/aston-villa-latest-news-3/” title=”Aston Villa latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Good news

Villanueva seems to be a trusted member of Emery’s backroom team in recent years, with the new Villa manager winning a number of major honours with the 46-year-old by his side.

Therefore, this update on Villanueva should come as welcome news for all involved at Bodymoor Heath and especially for Emery, providing that work permits are granted.

He has previous experience in the Premier League alongside Emery at Arsenal, so he’ll already know all about the demands of English football, and hopefully he can help the Villa boss to turn things around in the coming months and years.

Tillman was Rangers’ villain on Sunday

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Glasgow Rangers followed up their exit from the Champions League with a disappointing 2-1 defeat to St. Johnstone in the Premiership on Sunday.

The Light Blues had a remarkable 12 corners and 17 shots in the first half without breaking the deadlock as the hosts stood strong at the back.

St. Johnstone took the lead in the 42nd minute as Ben Davies gave the ball away on the edge of his own box before his subsequent block fell for James Brown to rifle a phenomenal strike into the top corner from distance.

They made it 2-0 in the 63rd minute as Nicky Clarke beat Borna Barisic at the front post to poke the ball past Allan McGregor, before James Tavernier pulled one back with just over 15 minutes left to play.

Whilst Davies’ sloppy play played a huge role in the home side taking the lead in the first half, which gave them something to hold onto for the rest of the match, the real villain of the match for van Bronckhorst was attacking midfielder Malik Tillman.

Rangers had plenty of opportunities to take the lead at 0-0 and then equalise at 1-0 down but failed to make the most of the situations they found themselves in, with the Bayern Munich loanee being one of the biggest culprits.

His individual display summed up the team’s performance as he showed signs of promise in the build-up before letting himself down with the final action.

In 61 minutes on the pitch, Tillman did not complete a single long pass and failed with his only attempted cross, whilst only getting the better of a defender in one of his three dribble attempts – as per SofaScore.

He left a lot to be desired on the ball as he gave possession away 15 times from 39 touches and only completed 73% of his attempted passes. The midfielder turned well to create space for himself at times but was then unable to produce a quality pass to give the likes of Antonio Colak and Ryan Kent a chance to score.

Tillman also struggled with the physicality of the game as he lost ten of his 14 individual duels (71%). This shows that he was a lightweight in the middle of the park as St. Johnstone’s players were able to outmuscle him for the majority of his battles.

Therefore, he was the real villain for van Bronckhorst. Indeed, St. Johnstone may not have had the opportunity to score their goals if he had provided quality in the final third to help Rangers take the lead.

Leeds: Romano drops Drameh update

Leeds United right-back Cody Drameh is attracting increasing interest ahead of the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to Fabrizio Romano, with the Italian transfer insider revealing in a recent post on Twitter that Borussia Dortmund, LOSC Lille and Bayer Leverkusen have now joined Newcastle United in the race to sign the Whites’ 20-year-old right-back this winter.

Regarding the future of the England U21 international, the journalist said: “Cody Drameh, attracting interest as many clubs are keen on signing him in January from Leeds. Borussia Dortmund, Lille and Bayer Leverkusen alongside Newcastle are following the English right back as talent for the future.”

Big mistake

While it is true that, at present, both Rasmus Kristensen and Luke Ayling are ahead of Drameh in Jesse Marsch’s right-back pecking order, considering just how much potential the 20-year-old possesses, in addition to Ayling turning 32 years of age early next year, the argument that selling the youngster this winter would be a big mistake is an easy one to make.

Indeed, the £2.2m-rated talent highly impressed during a short-term loan spell with Cardiff City last season, helping the Bluebirds keep six clean sheets over his 22 Championship appearances, as well as making an average of 3.8 tackles – the most of any player in the division – one interception, 2.0 clearances and winning 6.9 duels – at a success rate of 57% – per game.

The £4.4k-per-week full-back also impressed going forwards, providing his teammates with three assists and creating four big chances, in addition to making an average of 0.6 key passes, playing 1.4 long balls and completing 1.1 dribbles per fixture.

These returns saw the player who Michael Skubala claimed goes “under the radar” average an extremely impressive SofaScore match rating of 6.92, ranking him as Cardiff’s fourth-best player in the second tier of English football last time out.

Furthermore, the England youth international has also stood out for Leeds’ U21 side in the current campaign, scoring one goal and registering three assists over his 7.03 over his three appearances in the Papa John’s Trophy.

As such, it is easy to see why Manchester Evening News journalist and self-confessed Leeds supporter, Conor McGilligan, suggested that, following Romano’s update, Marsch needs to start selecting Drameh in his starting XI, stating:

“Should be Drameh and [Kristensen] fighting out for the [right-back] spot. If you need any more convincing, just look at the calibre of clubs in for him. Instead (with respect) Bill is still featuring ahead of Cody. It’s 2022 – we need to evolve.”

It is difficult to disagree with this opinion, while it is also not difficult to see that selling Drameh would be an incredibly short-sighted decision by the Whites, as Drameh has more than proven he is worthy of a chance in Marsch’s first team this season.

Sunderland injury news on Stewart

Sunderland have been gifted a timely injury boost as Ross Stewart has been spotted back in training with the team.

The Lowdown: Training individually

Tony Mowbray confirmed earlier this month that Stewart was training away from the team in his recovery from injury, which has seen him ruled out since September.

The Stadium of Light outfit are using the break for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar to train and build their fitness ahead of their next league game, which is at home to Millwall in the Championship on December 3rd.

The Latest: Back with the team

The Wearside club posted footage of some of the players in training with each other on Tuesday morning on their official Twitter page.

The footage was focused on Stewart, who appears to be back training with the team, as the Black Cats posted the caption: ‘You love to see it.’

The Verdict: Big boost

Stewart being spotted back training with the team is a big boost for Mowbray and his side going into their next run of fixtures after the World Cup.

Hailed as ‘unbelievable’ by Sunderland journalist James Copley, the striker played a huge part in the club’s promotion from League One last season, scoring a mammoth 26 goals and making a further five assists, including two strikes in the play-offs (Transfermarkt).

He started off this campaign on fire as well, with five goals and three assists in his opening seven Championship starts (Transfermarkt), and will no doubt be a key player for the Black Cats for the second part of the season, should he be able to stay fit.
