Journalist Simon Phillips has claimed that interim Chelsea manager Frank Lampard will revert to a back three in the club's next game.

The 44-year-old has a big task on his hands right now as he looks to steady the ship with former head coach Graham Potter now fired.

Things under Lampard didn't get off to a good start as the Blues lost in the Premier League against Wolves, but he must put that disappointment behind him quickly.

Indeed, Chelsea now face a season-defining quarter-final clash with Real Madrid in the Champions League and travel to the Bernabeu on Wednesday for the first leg.

Naturally, the coach will have to think long and hard about his team selection. But it also seems as though Lampard is yet to decide what formation to play.

In a new article for GiveMeSport, Phillips revealed that the Englishman nearly played a back three against Wolves and may yet play it against Madrid.

He wrote: "Lampard changed the formation to his preferred 4-3-3, but I understand that him and his team had also heavily considered sticking with a back three and I'd be very surprised if they don't revert to that for the Real Madrid game on Wednesday night.

"After only having two training sessions, it was tough for Lampard to get his ideas across, and also he has yet to really assess his entire squad. Whilst he did work with some of them the first time around, there are also many new faces in a massively changed squad. Lampard has admitted that he hasn't had enough time to watch all of Chelsea's games this season, so he is very much giving them all a clean slate. This brings pros and cons, and some Chelsea fans have already been left frustrated by his first team selection back."

He added that the interim manager was "annoyed" during and after the Wolves game and won't be afraid to drop players once he's fully assessed the squad.

How will Chelsea line up against Real Madrid?

Against Wolves, Lampard did play a 4-3-3, as Phillips points out. But when in charge of Everton earlier this season, he was flexible enough to play a back five – or a back three depending on how you see it.

What's more, under Potter, Chelsea often abandoned the traditional back four. And so the current set of players should be well-equipped to go to either formation.

In potentially big news for the Blues, Thiago Silva returned to training Monday and so he is now in contention to play against Real Madrid, while N'Golo Kante and Mason Mount could also both feature.

No doubt this could have major impact on Lampard's plans. With Silva, for instance, he may feel as though his defence will have another quality without having to play that extra defender.

It will certainly be interesting to see how things play out.

Akhomach was first linked with a move to Yorkshire back in March after Victor Orta met with the player’s representatives. However, a transfer has gone cold in recent weeks, with Premier League leaders Arsenal also joining the race for the 19-year-old.

Barcelona chiefs appeared to want Akhomach to receive less game time in the B team with a Nou Camp exit looking increasingly likely, and it seems as if a move to Yorkshire is well and truly on.

Sport Witness relayed an update from Sport regarding Leeds and Akhomach in the last 24 hours. They claimed that the Whites have won the race for the teenager and that an agreement will be closed in the 'next few hours'.

The report adds that Leeds and 'their project' of giving youngsters chances to shine under head coach Javi Gracia and sporting director Orta has helped with the move.

Is Akhomach what Leeds need this summer?

Akhomach is primarily a left-footed right-winger who can also play on the left or through the middle and is valued at €3m (£2.7m) by Transfermarkt.

Hailed as a “great player with enormous potential” by his agent, Akhomach could well be a star in the making, with Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez describing him as a “winger who runs” and “can beat a man one on one”.

He has made three senior appearances for the Catalan giants, although none of those have come during the current campaign, with his only first-team matchday involvement coming on the bench in the Champions League back in November.

Leeds meanwhile are in another huge battle to avoid relegation and have been leaking goals for fun. The Whites have conceded a whopping 16 goals in four league games this month, 11 of which have come in back-to-back heavy home defeats to Crystal Palace and Liverpool.

Championship football appears a real possibility next season, which could result in plenty of changes in personnel both on and off the pitch. Last Saturday, Gracia opted not to select Firpo to play against Fulham at Craven Cottage, instead fielding Maximilian Wober on the left-hand side of the defence in what ended up being a disappointing 2-1 defeat for the Yorkshire outfit, as per BBC Sport.

Before the clash in west London, Firpo had started Leeds United's last 11 Premier League matches, as per Transfermarkt, meaning that his omission may have come as a surprise to the away support.

Nevertheless, the 26-year-old's form has dipped of late, none more so than in Leeds United's 6-1 loss to Liverpool at Elland Road last Monday. As shown on WhoScored, Firpo endured a torrid time in the affair and picked up a match rating of just 5.35/10 for his exploits.

Gracia has already been recently been pressed on his selection choices of late, particularly that of his failure to field Wilfried Gnonto from the start in their last three matches.

Barcelona are willing to sell the Brazilian in order to fund a move for Messi in the summer, and the Gunners have been put on alert by his sudden availability, with the club now considering whether to submit a bid.

The La Liga side are set to demand a fee in the region of £50m – £60m for the 26-year-old, and he would be open to a Premier League return, should he be forced out of the Camp Nou this summer.
