Compton admits he's playing for his Test future

Nick Compton has admitted he is playing for his future in the final two Tests of the Investec series against Sri Lanka

George Dobell25-May-2016Nick Compton has admitted he is playing for his future in the final two Tests of the Investec series against Sri Lanka.Compton has scored 15, 26, 0, 19, 6 and 0 in his most recent six Test innings and accepts that, with a Test batting average of 30.16, he hasn’t, to date, taken his “chances with two hands”.But while he concedes he wouldn’t necessarily want to watch himself bat if he were a spectator, he insists he has the skills to contribute to a successful England side and will continue to play his natural game in an attempt to prove it.”Sure, definitely,” Compton says when asked if he is playing for his international future. “You’ve got to score runs. It all comes down to weight of runs and performance. I’ve just got to do it better.”We can talk beyond that about certain things but, fundamentally, if I do my job as well as I can and score the runs I know I can, I can contribute to this England team.”Compton’s skills are somewhat out of fashion. At a time when the world is becoming accustomed to men thrashing centuries in little over 40 deliveries, Compton is offering somewhat more old-world fare: he is offering to see the shine off the new ball and draw the sting from the bowlers. But while he admits his style may lack “glamour”, he still feels it has value.”The way the game’s going, I think people are drawn towards a certain glamour,” he said. “Some players provide that and people want to see more of that.”That’s great, we’re in the entertainment business. It’s about getting bums on seats and I suppose watching Ben Stokes’ 200 is better than watching Compton’s 80. If I’m honest with you, if I was sitting on the couch I’d rather watch Brian Lara, or my late grandfather, or Stokes. That’s what people want to see. I’m by no means unaware of that.”But when you look at it, my job is possibly a little bit tougher, it’s quite an intense role. The new ball is tough when you go in there and the way that I play doesn’t always look that pretty. But I feel like I have made the best of what I’ve been given.”In truth, Compton is an elegant player. It’s just he is, by current standards, a relatively slow scorer. But for those who still take pleasure in a perfectly played forward defensive – and such folk appear to be a dying breed – there is a certain beauty in his batting. He can cut, drive and pull nicely, too, and promises that, given a chance, he will show that he has another gear to his batting.”I don’t want to change my style,” he says. “When you’re not playing well your style doesn’t look so great. It can be really hard work. But we’ve an exciting team of stroke-players and it’s my role to get myself in and try and shield some of those players from the new ball.”I know deep inside me there’s a player in here who could change all those opinions very quickly. I’ve got shots. I’ve got things that I can do and I’ve got to allow them to come out.”But you can’t force that. I’ve tried it before. You need to earn that right. As with any batsman who goes in against the new ball, it’s always a vulnerable time.”Unfortunately, until you do it and people see it in real life there’s no point in me saying anything else. Words are cheap and until you do it consistently there’s not much to be said.”Investec is the title sponsor of Test match cricket in England. Man Utd Eye Move For £30m ‘Baller’

While Manchester United bolstered their midfield ranks last summer with the signings of the experienced pairing of Christian Eriksen and Casemiro, the centre of the park looks set to be another priority area for Erik ten Hag ahead of next season.

As per Manchester Evening News, the Dutchman is said to be targeting a 'younger midfielder' in order to freshen up the current ranks, with the likes of Eriksen, Casemiro and Fred all now in their thirties and hardly long-term options.

Amid that search for a more youthful addition, there have been notable links to West Ham United skipper, Declan Rice, with the 24-year-old – who's been described as "world-class" by manager Danny Cowley – seemingly the type of figure who could be a fixture of the Red Devils side for the foreseeable future.

It is then something of a surprise to see the current speculation that United are also said to be keen on signing Croatian star, Mateo Kovacic from rivals Chelsea, with Football Insider recently stating that the Old Trafford outfit are willing to splash out £30m on the wantaway playmaker – who has just a year left to run on his existing deal at Stamford Bridge.

At 29, the former Real Madrid man – who is also reportedly of interest to Manchester City – would appear to be at odds with Ten Hag's desire for a 'younger' acquisition, with it perhaps wise for the top-four hopefuls to think again before sanctioning such a move.

Should Man United sign Kovacic?

The Red Devils should wish to avoid a repeat of the signing of another midfield maestro from the Blues in the form of Nemanja Matic, with the Serbian colossus having been snapped up from west London on a £40m deal back in 2017.

While the one-time Benfica ace arrived at the Theatre of Dreams with a wealth of experience having claimed two Premier League titles during his time with Chelsea, the 6 foot 4 brute's age meant he was never likely to be a long-term solution, having been 28 at the time of his capture.

Although the 48-cap destroyer did make a strong early impression during Jose Mourinho's tenure – having been described as a "genius" by the Portuguese coach – he was unable to maintain that influence during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's time at the helm, notably making just 12 league starts in the 2020/21 campaign.

As it proved, United ultimately took a hefty loss on Matic as he was allowed to leave for nothing last summer after five years at the club, with that again showcasing the perils of signing a player who is potentially past their peak.

Man United's Nemanja Matic

In the case of Kovacic, the one-time Inter Milan man has been lauded as a "baller" – in the words of podcaster Dan McCarthy – after racking up 220 appearances for his current side to date, notably winning the Champions League under Thomas Tuchel in 2020/21.

As for the current campaign, however, the £100k-per-week asset has found life difficult after being restricted to just 17 league starts for the mid-table outfit, providing just one goal and two assists from his number eight role.

Having hardly done much this season to warrant a move to Old Trafford – notably having 'failed to impact the game' against Nottingham Forest last time out, as per football.london's Sam Hill – it could well represent another short-term, transfer gamble for United if they are to push for a move, much like the case of Matic.

Dominant England seek series knockout

After three matches of the series there has only been one outright result so Sri Lanka are clinging on but need an improved show

The Preview by Andrew Miller28-Jun-2016Match factsJune 29, 2016
Start time 1300 local (1200 GMT)Big PictureSo now it’s official. Break out the Brexit gags and wallow in whatever the Icelandic is for schadenfreude. England really, really, really doesn’t want to be involved with Europe in any way, shape or form. What a time to be alive. Happily, for those of an escapist bent, the nation’s cricketers have rarely had much need to engage with the continent – save for their biennial ICC-tournament humiliations at the hands of the Netherlands and Ireland, of course. But, when it comes to being upstaged by plucky islanders who thrive on their underdog status, well, they more or less wrote the book. From Sri Lanka’s maiden Test victory over England, way back in 1992-93, via Murali’s magic at The Oval in 1998, and a brace of infamous World Cup drubbings in 1996 and 2011, England’s cricketers have been taught the hard way never to make assumptions about their pre-eminence.Sure enough, the trend continues in 2016. Despite a record-shattering victory in the second ODI at Edgbaston, a combination of an off-the-boil first outing at Trent Bridge and the onset of bad weather in Bristol mean that England are just 1-0 up with two to play as they prepare for the fourth match of the series at The Oval. Realistically, it is hard to see any way back for a Sri Lanka side that has lacked impetus with the bat and penetration with the ball, and yet we were making similar claims ahead of their fightback at Lord’s in the third Test earlier this month – and that didn’t quite follow the presumed script. That said, it will take quite a collapse in resolve from England to squander their hard-earned lead. Despite the early loss of Alex Hales in their run-chase at Bristol, that target of 249 ought still to have been hunted down with ease, following a middling batting display that relied too heavily on two senior batsmen nursing injury concerns – Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal – and seemed almost a throwback to England’s own one-day batting tactics of the early- to mid-2000s, as they nudged ineffectual singles and preserved wickets for a late onslaught that never entirely materialised. There are still several untested elements to England’s line-up – rain, coupled with that ten-wicket win in the second match, means that only Hales and Jason Roy have had any meaningful time in the middle since the lacklustre display at Trent Bridge that left them scrambling a last-ball six for the tie. But with the ball, the addition of Chris Jordan’s death-bowling prowess added an extra layer of impenetrability to a varied and incisive attack, in which Adil Rashid’s legspin has been particularly hard to collar. If the rain stays away, and there’s no absolute guarantee of that, then England can expect to wrap up the series under the Oval floodlights tomorrow evening, and raise the spirits of the nation, once and for all. But there have been a lot of assumptions flying around the country in recent days, and not very many of them have come to fruition.Chris Jordan was an effective inclusion at the expense of Moeen Ali•Getty Images

Form guideEngland WTLLL (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Sri Lanka LTWWLIn the spotlightJoe Root, who swept the board in England’s player of the year awards last month, barely put a bat out of place in a stellar 12 months, up to and including the World T20 in India. But since the English summer got underway, he has not enjoyed the most fruitful of homecomings. There’s not been much evidence that he is out of form as such – a well-crafted 80 in the second Test suggested otherwise – but he hasn’t spent quite enough time at the crease to be sure. Four single-figure scores and a rain-aborted 11 not out at Bristol complete his season’s efforts. He’ll want to reassure himself, if no-one else, that he has not mislaid his touch. If Kusal Mendis, at the age of 21, stores away the memories of this maiden tour of England and cultivates them for future payback, then Sri Lanka are bound to be well served by a rising star whom Kumar Sangakkara, no less, has earmarked for great things. He’s managed three fifties on the tour so far, one in the Headingley Test, another against Ireland, and the third – 53 at Bristol on Sunday – which helped restore Sri Lanka’s impetus after the early loss of both openers. There is plenty on which he can improve – in particular he was troubled by Liam Plunkett’s lift and bounce and eventually caught on the hook – but his willingness to front up has not gone unnoticed in adversity.Teams newsMoeen Ali was rested in Bristol to make way for Jordan’s return, an understandable rejig given his slight drop-off in form, allied to the fact that Rashid has added impressive control to his ever-improving command of variation. The resulting five-man attack offers pleasing variety to cover for the ongoing absence of Ben Stokes and deserves another outing, although the unsettled weather may influence the final selection. There’s little point in fiddling with the batting, seeing as the middle order has had a solitary airing all series.England (probable) 1 Alex Hales, 2 Jason Roy, 3 Joe Root, 4 Eoin Morgan (capt), 5 Jonny Bairstow, 6 Jos Buttler (wk), 7 Chris Woakes, 8 David Willey, 9 Chris Jordan, 10 Liam Plunkett, 11 Adil RashidSri Lanka’s patched-up batsmen were a qualified success at Bristol – they managed to put runs on the board, even if their mobility limited their reliability between the wickets, and both Mathews and Chandimal have been passed fit. Dasun Shanaka replaced Suraj Randiv for their last outing and, despite being the most culpable of Sri Lanka’s mis-callers, he is set for another outing. Farveez Maharoof continues to be available despite a damaged finger.Sri Lanka (possible) 1 Kusal Perera, 2 Danushka Gunathilaka, 3 Kusal Mendis, 4 Dinesh Chandimal (wk), 5 Angelo Mathews (capt), 6 Upul Tharanga, 7 Seekkuge Prasanna, 8 Dasun Shanaka, 9 Farveez Maharoof, 10 Nuwan Pradeep, 11 Suranga LakmalPitch and conditionsThere’s rain on the radar for Wednesday afternoon, which doesn’t bode well given how torrential it has been lately when the heavens have opened. Despite being a floodlit game, play has to get underway at 1pm due to local restrictions on late-night revelry, which means – seeing as we are only a week past the longest day of the year – the match is likely to finish in manageable twilight anyway. The pitch itself has got a bit more grass on than expected, according to Eoin Morgan.Stats and trivia England have some happy memories of their last ODI against Sri Lanka at The Oval, two years ago this week. They won a rain-dented contest by 81 runs on Duckworth-Lewis, with Root, Jordan and Jos Buttler all making important cameos. However, it is a measure of the subsequent upheaval in both squads that just seven players out of the 22 on parade survive to this day. Morgan, who made 3, is the other England player to endure the post-World Cup fall-out, while Mathews, Chandimal and Suranga Lakmal remain for Sri Lanka. The Bristol wash-out means that England now lead by 14 points to 4 in the inaugural Super Series, which they wrapped up with victory at Edgbaston.Quotes”The first game was a kick up the backside, more than anything, so bouncing back from that at Edgbaston I thought was brilliant, then backing that up with our bowling performance at Bristol was also very good.”
“There are still two ODI games left, we still want to win those games. It’s 1-0 so if we can do that, we’ll win the series. Everyone is looking forward and trying 200% at practice but we need to improve.”
It appears that Upul Tharanga’s maths has a sunnier outlook than the British economy.

Wolves Could Sign 19-y/o Star Likened To Arjen Robben

Wolverhampton Wanderers have been linked to a forward ahead of the summer transfer window, as Julen Lopetegui bids to get his side firing.

Wolves are the joint-lowest scoring side in the Premier League this campaign, bagging 31 goals in 37 games in a testing term for the Midlands club.

As the summer transfer window beckons, the Spaniard will be aiming to get his team scoring again, as well as balancing expected departures with exciting incomings ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

Ahead of the window, a familiar target from last summer, Dario Osoroi, has re-emerged as a potential arrival at Molineux.

What’s the latest on Dario Osorio to Wolves?

Wolves attempted to sign Chilean teenager Dario Osorio in the summer of 2022, however, the youngster remained in South America to continue his development, as per En Cancha.

Fast-forward to this year, and fellow Chilean news outlet La Tercera have reported that the 19-year-old is “still being targeted” by the Midlands outfit.

The Premier League side aren’t the only ones interested in the young forward, with Serie A giants AC Milan chasing his talent.

Who is Dario Osorio?

At just 19-years-old, the winger has attracted valuable interest from Europe while playing in Chile’s Primera Division for Club Universidad de Chile.

The youngster first attracted interest last season, due to his breakthrough in the 2021/22 campaign in which he scored seven goals in 27 senior appearances.

Playing predominantly as a right-winger, the forward is versatile in his positioning in attack, featuring on the opposing flank as well as at a centre-forward in his budding career.

Despite not scoring yet this campaign, the youngster is considered one of the league’s most promising players, as echoed by Chief Scout at Velez Club de Futbol, Lee Scott, who was full of praise for the star.

The expert in talent ID described the teen as having “elements” within his game likened to Arjen Robben, adding that he will “make the jump” to one of Europe’s top five leagues.

Wolves have a squad full of exciting talent, and the potential arrival of the "flamboyant" Osorio – as dubbed by scout Jacek Kulig – could only further that. Introducing a hungry young talent is always a positive prospect, especially for those around the squad to challenge and compete with.

Lopetegui’s current forward option in the Chilean’s rivalled position is Pedro Neto, who despite being a “superstar” as described by Jamie Carragher on Sky Sports, has been inconsistent in performance this season, scoring just once.

Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Pedro Neto.

The introduction of the 19-year-old could ignite a spark in both players to compete for a starting spot in the Spaniard’s set-up, with both boasting similar qualities, competition could only enhance their respective form.

It’s been a stagnant campaign for goals at Molineux, with the Old Gold having netted only 31 in 37 league outings, so introducing attacking reinforcements is essential this summer to improve this area ahead of Lopetegui’s first full season in charge.

There’s little to doubt the talent that Wolves could integrate into their side in Osorio, however only time will tell if the deal will get over the line, with AC Milan also showing interest.

West Ham: £61k-p/w Signing Would Be An Ings Upgrade

West Ham United have been linked to a forward ahead of the summer transfer window, with a busy summer expected at the London Stadium.

The primary focus until the break is on the Europa Conference League final, which takes place on June 7th as David Moyes’ side face Fiorentina in the bid to win the club’s first European silverware since 1965.

Despite the hype surrounding the historic final, the Irons have a lot to improve on ahead of next season, having only mathematically survived relegation from the Premier League last weekend.

Most of the focus on West Ham’s transfer news has revolved around the future of midfielder Declan Rice, who is expected to be snatched by Arsenal this summer, however, it’s not just outgoings expected in east London.

News reported this week has revealed the club’s potential plans to bring a forward from the Bundesliga to the club, in a bid to add depth to the squad ahead of the next campaign.

What’s the latest on Alassane Plea to West Ham United?

As reported by Foot Mercato earlier this week, West Ham are reportedly one of the clubs interested in signing Borussia Monchengladbach forward Alassane Plea this summer.

The 30-year-old is wanted by former club Olympique Lyon, however, the report states that the French outfit should expect some rivalry to sign the attacker from the Premier League.

West Ham, along with Crystal Palace and Fulham have “already made some contact” with the player’s representatives, with his value believed to be in the region of €10m – €12m (£8m – £10m).

What could Alassane Plea bring to West Ham United?

Hailed as being “versatile, quick and clever” by Monchengladbach’s former director of sport Max Eberl, the forward could offer a lot to West Ham.

While the Hammers already have a kitted-out left-wing department, which is Plea’s dominant position, the forward has been used through the middle before as a striker, which could make him an attractive player in Moyes’ system.

Current strike options at the club are Michail Antonio and Danny Ings, one being the club’s top goalscorer this season but the other in Ings finding the net just twice in the Premier League since arriving in January.

When comparing the form of both Ings and Plea over the past year, it’s clear to see why the Frenchman is reportedly on West Ham’s radar.

The £61k-per-week ace offers a lot more to an attack than goals, securing nine assists in 20 Bundesliga starts this season, showing his eye for a pass and instinctual nature in the final third.

Having Antonio firing when leading the line could allow Moyes to use the Frenchman as a decoy or as a rotating striker to add competition to the 33-year-old.

The 30-year-old has a lot more in his locker creatively than Ings, as shown through FBref, with the Borussia star averaging 4.67 progressive passes to the Englishman’s 1.26 per 90.

The Lille-born forward also averages two progressive carries per 90 to Ings’ 1.38, showing his ability to float around the attack rather than remain as a stationary striker.

One of the most prominent areas of his game is his playmaking, with him ranking in the top 3% of players in Europe’s top five leagues for his rate of assists, averaging a huge 0.46 assists per 90 – as per FBref.

Moyes could utilise the forwards’ strengths in a way more useful to West Ham than those that Ings portrays, and as such would be a greater signing.
