Is it really possible to win it all?

With so many competitions each season not to mention the constant media pressure on both players and managers, is it realistic to expect a team to win it all? For a top club there is four competitions on the table, and when you factor in the not so small matter of internationals too, their players are on the go all the time – risking burn out not to mention injury to boot.

Of course there have been occasions where teams win it all – United did the treble in 1999 and Barcelona have done it more recently, but in reality it takes an awful lot and then a little bit more to win not only the title but the domestic cup and also the Champions League – not to mention a huge deal of luck with decisions and draws.

Players in the modern game have to contend with not only domestic fixtures but also the international tournaments that are on pretty much none stop – Juan Mata has not only played nearly all of Chelsea’s games, but gone to both the Euros and the Olympics to boot – meaning that the player has literally not stopped. This sadly is all too common for players these days and fatigue can play a huge part in deciding where trophies go in the latter part of the season.

Take the Champions League last season – both Barca and Real Madrid were majorly affected from the title deciding Clasico being smack bang in the middle of the Champion’s League semi-finals, with Madrid’s going into extra time and penalties to boot. It can often be forgotten that players are human and feel exhaustion and emotion like the rest of us – and in front of thousands of people every single week, not to mention the glare of the media spotlight.

A full season in the Premier League is 38 games, not to mention the added rigours of the other domestic competitions – it is no wonder that some managers will sacrifice the Carling Cup or even the FA Cup in pursuit of what they and everyone else sees as bigger glory – either domestically or in Europe.

As we go into an international break this week, some players are able to rest or in Kaka’s case, train twice a day in order to get some first team football in the future, but others such as Ronaldo or Iniesta have to not only contend with traveling but the fixture – and a friendly or qualifier at that. Should such a player come back to their club injured it is entirely reasonable for the club to feel aggrieved – they are paying the wages after all, and with the amount of fixtures the club and players already face, a ridiculous friendly can seriously curtail the chase for trophies towards the latter end of the season. Winning it all? Possible, but highly unlikely.

Rangers fans are sceptical but excited by potential Jermain Defoe signing

As reported by The Sun, Rangers are keen on signing Jermain Defoe on loan this summer as Steven Gerrard looks to revitalise the Light Blues’ attack in the upcoming transfer window.

With Alfredo Morelos having a pretty good debut season at Ibrox, it’s not like Rangers are completely without options in the final third, but there are question marks about how clinical the Colombian is and his ability to perform in big matches after missing a number of chances against Celtic.

Defoe may be 35 years of age, but he’s scored 38 Premier League goals over the last three-and-a-half seasons and has quality and experience beyond almost everyone in the Rangers squad.

A former international teammate of Gerrard, is he the right kind of signing for the Gers this summer?

Fans certainly think so and are excited about the potential switch, even if they recognise it’s a long shot due to the wages he is likely earning at Bournemouth currently.

They took to Twitter this week to share their thoughts…

Fulham absolutely should look to partner Mitrovic with £7.2m-rated flop forward

The Fulham fans in and around the Transfer Tavern are eagerly awaiting the start of the new Premier League season having seen their beloved club gain promotion via the play-offs.

In what was a long and strenuous season, Fulham made it through and reached their ultimate goal of Premier League football once again, the first time since 2014. The Cottagers are already well equipped, possessing some great talents within their ranks but our punters feel that signing Saido Berahino would raise a few eyebrows yes but could work out to be a great signing.

Fulham transformed the talent of Aleksandar Mitrovic last season, when the Newcastle loanee joined the club to help their promotion bid. So why can’t the same happen with Saido Berahino? His future doesn’t look particularly bright at the moment but given the right now in the next step in his career could make all the difference. Valued at £7.2 million on Transfermarkt, Berahino is isolated currently with Stoke, having failed to score since move to the recently relegated Potters. Slavic Jokanović has shown how he can take another failing striker and turn them into a goal-scorer and based on the ability Berahino has previously shown, why can’t it be another success story.

The Englishman is thought to be available this summer and although the negative connotations associated with Berahino are bad, Fulham could undo all those and turn him into the player everyone believed he always would be.

It is a bold move to say the least but Saido Berahino does have the knowledge of Premier League football, unlike a lot of Fulham players.

Promoted Lancs already looking forwards

Lancashire may not have achieved promotion in the style they would have liked, but the hour-long wait to confirm their success completes a remarkable turnaround of fortunes

Lancashire may not have achieved promotion in the style they would have liked, but the hour-long wait to confirm their success completes a remarkable turnaround of fortunes. Relegated as reigning champions just a year ago, their return to Division One was confirmed after third-placed Essex were unable to secure victory against Kent at Canterbury.By the time news filtered through, there were precious few people left at Old Trafford to mark the event, after Lancashire’s final home match meandered to a draw on the final day. The players, of course, enjoyed their own celebration in the dressing room but the rest of the refurbished ground was empty other than a few members of the media writing up in the press box and the odd construction worker disassembling the temporary stands used for the Ashes Test and recent one-day international.Resuming the final morning trailing by 393 runs on 60 for 3, Leicestershire comfortably batted out the day and avoided a seventh successive defeat mainly thanks to a 69-run seventh-wicket stand between Ben Raine, who was celebrating his 22nd birthday, and Tom Wells. Raine top-scored with a career-best 72, while Wells also made his best first-class score of 43, and both sides shook hands on a draw after Leicestershire were dismissed for 329.It was a low-key end to Lancashire’s season at Old Trafford and, although they may finish the summer with silverware – Lancashire need only 12 points from their final two matches to secure the Division Two title – thoughts will inevitably turn to next year and whether the team can adapt to Division One cricket better than 12 months ago? They certainly have a bigger playing pool, with youngsters like Luis Reece and Andrea Agathangelou breaking through this summer to keep Steven Croft and Karl Brown, the two players at the crease when Lancashire claimed the championship at Taunton in 2011, out of the Championship side. They will also be able to call upon the experience of Ashwell Prince, the former South Africa Test batsman, who fulfils the final year of his two-year deal as a Kolpak player next summer.Reece’s emergence as an opening partner for Paul Horton has provided the foundation for much of Lancashire’s success this summer. In six innings opening together, they have recorded three century partnerships – in stark contrast to last summer when Lancashire had to wait until the final game of the summer for their first century opening stand – and should provide greater stability going into next season.Lancashire would also like to add Simon Katich, the 38-year-old former Australia batsman, to their squad for next season as an overseas player, after he contributed 1,097 Championship runs to their promotion push, including four hundreds and six half-centuries, at an average of 73.13. He will play no further part in their season as he is due to fly out to India this weekend to captain Perth Scorchers in the Champions League and discussions about next summer are expected to begin after the end of that tournament.Should Katich decide against another gruelling six months in county cricket, Lancashire have confirmed they would look to recruit another quality overseas batsman having already made the exciting signing of Kyle Jarvis, the 24-year-old former Zimbabwe Test bowler, on a three-year contract as a Kolpak player to strengthen their bowling resources. Jarvis claimed 30 wickets in eight Tests and has certainly looked the part during lunch-time bowling sessions at Old Trafford, bowling at a good pace and accuracy, but has yet to be tested in a first-team fixture.Jarvis’ pace will certainly add something to Lancashire’s attack, which has lacked a quick bowler for some years, and will ease the workload on Glen Chapple, their 39-year-old captain. They are well stocked in the spin department, with Simon Kerrigan having already proven himself in Division One. Stephen Parry, another left-arm spinner, should strengthen that department, having missed most of this season with a broken arm, while Arron Lilley, a 22-year-old offspinner, also made his Championship debut this summer.Do Lancashire have enough strength in depth to challenge for the title, as Yorkshire have done, in the season after going up? Much will depend on Lancashire’s recruitment policies during the winter. Their Roses rivals secures Liam Plunkett and Jack Brooks a year ago, which has helped them mount a title challenge.Certainly Katich is confident. “Having played Yorkshire last year [with Hampshire], they’ve brought in Plunkett and Brooks and, apart from that, their team is pretty similar,” he said. “The batting line-up is almost the same, apart from one or two young kids. They played some good cricket last year, Jason Gillespie is a good coach and they’ve probably built on that confidence and had another good year, so there’s no reason why that couldn’t also happen here.”

Sunderland’s stance on flops shows better times are ahead

After two successive relegation campaigns, Sunderland have started the season in a much better fashion.

With Stewart Donald installed as the new chairman and Jack Ross as the new manager, Sunderland seem to be beginning an era where they may be some positivity for the club.

Although we’re only seven games into the new season, Sunderland currently sit fourth in the league.

Crucially, Donald handed Ross a raft of new signings in the hope of securing promotion back to the Championship. The Black Cats signed 12 new players over the summer, including League One hotshot Charlie Wyke and Wycombe Wanderers’ talented midfielder Luke O’Nien.

Bringing in new players was always going to be key for the club but so was shedding some of the deadwood from the squad. Lamine Kone, Paddy McNair, Wahbi Khazri and John O’Shea all departed the club. The only long-term players who the club didn’t manage to ship off are Papy Djilobodji and Didier Ndong. In what will come as great news for Sunderland fans, the club is now exploring the possibility of suing both players.

The Breakdown

Djilobodji only returned last week but was scheduled to return to the club in August. Sunderland had tried to get rid of the centre-half over the summer but a move never materialised. Even more shockingly than his fellow teammate, Didier Ndong has failed to even return to the club.

Two years ago, this may have derailed a Sunderland side that was constantly fighting relegation. The mere fact that the club have taken such a strong stance against both the players and have continued to perform well on the pitch, shows that Sunderland are finally in reliable hands.

Edwards leads England to five-wicket win

Captain Charlotte Edwards helped her team chase a modest 109 with five balls to spare in the second match of the Tri-Nation T20 series, handing New Zealand their second consecutive loss. The England bowlers did not let New Zealand score at a brisk pace, especially in the Powerplay overs, as Holly Colvin and Natalie Sciver took two wickets each and bowled economical spells.New Zealand lost their first wicket in the seventh over at the score of 13, after they chose to bat, before Suzie Bates and Amy Satterthwaite revived them with a 53-run stand in less than six overs. But Colvin broke the partnership and Sciver dismissed Bates, and later Rachel Priest, to push them to the back foot. A run out also meant they couldn’t go past 109.England kept losing wickets at regular intervals as four of their top five batsmen scored in single digits. Edwards, though, was firm at her end, and along with Tammy Beaumont took them till 97, before she fell for 42. They needed another 13 from 15 balls after that, and won with ease.
