SL mull over recalling out-of-form IPL players

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) will hold a meeting next week to decide whether it should make a request to the BCCI to release some of the under-performing Sri Lankan cricketers in the ongoing IPL so that they can partake in preparations for the Champions trophy. Nine of the ten Sri Lankan players playing in the IPL are part of Sri Lanka’s 15-member squad for the Champions trophy.”We have been discussing this issue recently but have not taken a firm decision,” Nishantha Ranatunga, the SLC secretary, said.Sri Lanka have arranged a limited-overs triangular tournament at Pallekele as preparation for the Champions trophy in England. The three teams in the preparatory tournament, Sri Lanka Rest (team selected for England), SLC Combined XI and Sri Lanka ‘A’, are due to play a total of seven fifty-over matches from May 12 to 20.”We know a lot of them are not faring well in the IPL, and we are worried about their form,” Ranatunga said. “We thought it would be better for these players to return home and play in the 50-over triangular rather than sit on the bench without playing a match in the IPL.”Former Sri Lanka captain and current captain of Delhi Daredevils Mahela Jayawardene is the only Sri Lanka player to have appeared in all the matches for his IPL team. The others have either been dropped from their respective sides due to poor form, to provide balance to the side, or simply were unable to play in Chennai due to political tensions. Angelo Mathews, the Sri Lanka captain, stepped down as the captain of Pune Warriors early this week.Ajantha Mendis is the only Sri Lankan player in the IPL who is not part of the Champions trophy squad.

Sialkot enter semis, Rawalpindi prevail in Super Over

A round-up of the Faysal Bank Super Eight T-20 Cup matches played on March 29, 2013

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Mar-2013
ScorecardSialkot Stallions stormed into the semi-final of the Faysal Bank Super Eight T-20 Cup after crushing Multan Tigers, who collapsed for the lowest total in Pakistan domestic Twenty20s. The match was delayed by rain for 70 minutes due to wet outfield and reduced to 14 overs a side in which Stallions opted to bowl first.Tigers got off to a dismal start as Raza Hasan, the main destroyer, ripped through their top order, leaving them reeling at 14 for 5 which also included two run-outs. Only Kashif Naved (16 off 28) fought for his double figures as the two brothers – Shoaib and Adeel Malik – took three wickets together with their spin and reduced the Tigers to 47 for 9.Stallions in reply lost Shakeel Ansar for seven in pursuit of a small total, though captain Shoaib, along with the Shahid Yousuf, took them home without getting into further trouble within seven overs, finishing second in group A.
Scorecard The match between Rawalpindi Rams and Faisalabad Wolves went down to the wire, with the Rams edging ahead in the Super Over. Rams captain Sohail Tanvir conceded 9 runs and took Misbah-ul-Haq’s wicket in the one-over eliminator, before Hammad Azam helped knock off the required runs to beat the Wolves. Both teams, however, have confirmed their spots in the semi-final, starting Saturday. Lahore Lions will take on Wolves while Sialkot Stallions will go head to head against Rams.Earlier, Rams opted to bat first but kept losing wickets at regular intervals. By the end of 16 overs, Rams lost seven wickets for 98 runs but Azam’s aggressive 66 off 35 balls, with the help of 11 boundaries including three sixes – also his first Twenty20 half-century – took Rams to a fighting total. Samiullah Khan (3-22) and Ehsan Adil (2-36) were the pick of the bowlers for Wolves. In reply, Wolves got off to a flying start with Farrukh Shehzad (24) and Ali Waqas (23) adding 47 runs for the first wicket before losing wickets. They went past the 100 mark in the 15th over with the required run-rate touching nine. However, Misbah took matters into his own hands and took the game to the final ball. Requiring 2 off 1 ball, Misbah mistimed a short ball over midwicket, and a freak run-out resulted in a tie.
ScorecardKarachi Dolphins won a dead rubber by 25 runs, led by Fawad Alam’s half-century. Dolphins’ decision to bat first backfired initially with the top order collapsing cheaply. Shahzaib Hasan and Khurram Manzoor departed in the space of two balls for ducks in the first over followed by another double-strike which reduced Dolphins to 22 for 4 in four overs. Thereafter, a defiant Fawad smashed 60 off 48 balls to power his team to a commanding total 146 for 8. Ataullah (3-32) and Fahad Maqsood (4-25) were the main destroyers for Bahawalpur Stags. The Stags began positively, with the openers adding 48 in less than six overs. However, three quick strikes after the 11th over stalled their chase and the match from thereon never slipped out of Dolphins’ control.

ACB officials wanted help in developing technical staff including coaches and video analysts•Hindustan Times

The Afghanistan Cricket Board has sought the help of the Indian board to develop cricket in the country. Officials from the ACB met BCCI representatives in Mumbai on Sunday to discuss how the Indian board could support Afghanistan cricket.”We had a good meeting with BCCI honorary secretary (Sanjay Jagdale) and general manager for game development (Ratnakar Shetty),” Shahzada Masoud, the ACB chairman, said. “It’s in the initial stage. We want to build up good relations with BCCI. We want help to develop technical staff, coaches, umpires, scorers and video analysts.”Also present at the meeting held at the Cricket Club of India was ACB’s high performance programme manager, Basheer Stanekzai. “We are preparing a new Under-19 team as the last World Cup team is over-aged.” he said. “We have selected a 20-member squad. We are working on it and preparing for the ACC (Asian Cricket Council) Under-19 Cup to be held in Malaysia from May 1 to 12. That’s the qualification round for the next U-19 World Cup. We need good coaches, especially in terms of batting.”The meeting comes a week after Afghanistan coach Kabir Khan called on the BCCI to do more to help Afghanistan cricket, highlighting England’s support for their neighbouring Associate nations.

Jaydev Shah confident Saurashtra can rally

Saurashtra captain Jaydev Shah believes his team still have a chance of taking the Ranji Trophy title, despite their poor first day

Saturday was a thoroughly dispiriting day for Saurashtra. After all the excitement about their first final since Independence, their batting crumbled against a good but unexceptional bowling performance from Mumbai in the first session. There wasn’t much help for the spinners, quick bowler Shardul Thakur’s figures of 12-2-31-0 hide how regularly he sprayed the ball wide of the stumps, while Ajit Agarkar took the new ball but bowled only three overs in the first hour. Only Dhawal Kulkarni posed a consistent threat, keeping the batsmen guessing around the off stump and choking the runs. Several wickets went down to poor strokes: Shitanshu Kotak played a loose shot off the backfoot, Jaydev Shah tucked a harmless delivery straight to midwicket and later, when much of the damage was already done, Kamlesh Makvana slapped a wide ball to backward point. What made it worse for Saurashtra was that bowling is generally considered to be Mumbai’s weaker department, with the hosts missing the experience of Zaheer Khan. Also, Saurashtra’s success this season has been based more on their spinners than the quicks and the Wankhede pitch is unlikely to offer much for the slow bowlers this early in the match.Just one day into the game and Mumbai already look to be certainties for the title. Saurashtra captain Jaydev Shah didn’t share that view, though. “Of course, why not?” he said emphatically, when asked whether he had the resources for a fightback. “Today you can see they were also getting beaten very easily. It is cricket, they can get out for 100 or 200, though 200-250 would have been a better score [from us].”Shah denied that his team was overawed by the occasion and said the toss played a crucial role. “First the pitch was damp, then it dried up, so the toss makes a difference. I have never seen Bombay, who have such a huge batting line-up, decide to bowl. They would not go and bowl, [unless] there is something in the wicket.”In the second session, with the pitch drying up, Aarpit Vasavada and Makvana seemed at ease in the middle, putting up Saurashtra’s only significant partnership of the innings and perhaps pointing to better batting conditions on the second day. Shah disagreed. “It was not easy to score runs. We gave their batsmen eight overs and they just scored about 10-12 runs, so it was difficult for them, too.”For Saurashtra to compete, they will need someone to bowl like Kulkarni did. He cut out the loose deliveries, and generally probed around off, getting the odd one to kick up and others to snake around. It helped him that he got a wicket in his first over itself, when Sagar Jogiyani nicked the ball to slip. “I was confident, got five wickets before this game, so I just carried it forward,” Kulkarni said. “I would have felt great if I had got that five-for [again]. I was bowling well throughout the season, the only thing missing was the wickets.”Like Kulkarni, Mumbai, too, can be pleased with their first day’s efforts. And unless Saurashtra manage to pull off a dramatic turnaround, the whispers around their batting thriving only on the notoriously flat pitches of Rajkot will only get louder.

Sri Lanka to query abandonment with ICC

Mahela Jayawardene could not hide his frustration at seeing Sri Lanka’s match against Australia fail to resume due a wet outfield

Daniel Brettig at the SCG20-Jan-2013When word filtered through that the fourth ODI at the SCG had been abandoned, it was not only the crowd of 22,521 who were intent on expressing their annoyance at the outcome. Sri Lanka’s captain, Mahela Jayawardene, could not hide his frustration at seeing the match fail to resume in circumstances that heavily favoured his side, having beaten far worse conditions against New Zealand in Pallekele only three months ago.Jayawardene said his team would write formally to the ICC match referee, Javagal Srinath, seeking an explanation for an inconsistency in rulings from one series to the next. Srinath had explained that play would not resume because he and the umpires Paul Reiffel and Marais Erasmus felt conditions were unfair, whereas in Sri Lanka the match referee, Andy Pycroft, had said play would only be stopped if deemed unsafe. This robbed Sri Lanka of an ideal chance to finish the series off, having bowled superbly to restrict Australia to 9 for 222, and Jayawardene expressed surprise that a ground as rich in history and facilities as the SCG could not get the game re-started.Conditions for calling off play

3.5.3 Suspension of play for adverse conditions of ground, weather or light
If at any time the umpires together agree that the conditions of ground, weather or light are so bad that there is obvious and foreseeable risk to the safety of any player or umpire, so that it would be unreasonable or dangerous for play to take place, then they shall immediately suspend play, or not allow play to commence or to restart. The decision as to whether conditions are so bad as to warrant such action is one for the umpires alone to make.
The fact that the grass and the ball are wet and slippery does not warrant the ground conditions being regarded as unreasonable or dangerous. If the umpires consider the ground is so wet or slippery as to deprive the bowler of a reasonable foothold, the fielders of the power of free movement, or the batsmen of the ability to play their strokes or to run between the wickets, then these conditions shall be regarded as so bad that it would be unreasonable for play to take place.

“We played New Zealand three months ago and the interpretation we got in that series was quite different to what we got today,” Jayawardene said. “We played in Pallekele with a lot of rain and during the World Cup as well. I think we need to find a bit more consistency, so that’s something we’ll probably write and put across to them [the ICC] and see how we can go about it. At the SCG, I would assume that a ground of this magnitude you should be able to get a game in. Maybe they should do what we do back home and cover the entire ground.”I think we can write to the match referee because the interpretation we got three months ago in the New Zealand series was something totally different. It was deemed that we’d only stop play if it was dangerous, not unfair, but today the interpretation was different. I accept that, it comes from the match referee and the umpires so I’m happy to take that on board, but it was two interpretations we got within a three-month period.”Australia’s captain, Michael Clarke, had chosen to bat first upon winning the toss but Jayawardene, mindful of rain on the horizon and also the hosts’ struggles against the swinging, seaming ball in the past two matches, had always set his mind on sending his opponents in.”When we started today I was going to bowl,” he said. “Purely because of the weather that was going to be around today, so we were going to bowl first thinking that if it comes to Duckworth-Lewis we would have a better idea of what we needed chasing, and our guys bowled brilliantly up front.”With the rain coming in and the equation it would probably have been a much easier chase, but I guess we just need to put this behind us and look forward to the next game. We’ve played some really good cricket and it’s just a little disappointment, but we can take a lot out of the last three games, how we’ve come back into the series and controlled things.”For his part, Clarke indicated his own surprise at the game not resuming, saying that he had seen matches played at the SCG where far more rain had drenched the ground. The curator, Tom Parker, had indicated that the delay was caused by light rain that sat on the surface rather than sinking in, while a lack of any breeze made evaporation more of a challenge.”I think this ground is known for its drainage,” Clarke said. “I’ve played a number of games here where it’s held a lot more water than that and we’ve managed to get back on and play games of cricket. I think the hardest thing was the water didn’t really sink in, it sat on top, there was no sun around and no wind.”Sri Lanka would’ve loved to get back on there as the game got shorter. It was probably going to suit them a lot more. But we certainly wanted to play as well to give ourselves a chance to win the series. Unfortunately we can’t win the series now, we can only level it.”
