An epic 193 from Shivnarine Chanderpaul, five wickets for Chris Wright and a superb all-round performance from Keith Barker sent Yorkshire crashing to defeat by an innings and 58 runs on the third day of their Championship match with Warwickshire at Headingley. The emphatic victory pushed Warwickshire back into the title race, leaving them only three points behind leaders Lancashire, but it virtually condemned Yorkshire to Second Division cricket next season.Chanderpaul already stood on 167 and Barker 33 when Warwickshire began the day on 340 for 6 with a lead of 43, and they were in complete control by the time they were bowled out for 482.The hosts then collapsed to 127 all out in an effort devoid of the fight needed by a team battling to avoid relegationChanderpaul and Barker pair stayed very much in control as they slowly built on their overnight partnership of 76. The first hour produced 27 runs and the only loose shot of Chanderpaul’smarathon innings came when he mistimed a pull at Richard Pyrah and the ball ballooned into a safe space. After batting for seven hours and 20 minutes, the West Indian finally departed, prompting bowler Steven Patterson to punch the air in relief and delight. Chanderpaul dabbed outside off stump and was caught behind after receiving 306 balls and stroking 26 boundaries. His stand with Barker had produced 119 in 40 overs and runs began to flow more quickly with the appearance of Neil Carter, the eighth-wicket pair putting on 71 together in 16 overs. They kept each other company until shortly after lunch when Barker tamely drove Joe Root to Adil Rashid at cover, his 85 containing 11 fours and coming off 167 balls.Root’s offspin also brought him the last two wickets of Carter and Chris Metters to give him career-best figures of 3 for 33. Left-arm spinner David Wainwright also had three wickets, but there was no reward for the out-of-sorts Adil Rashid, whose leg-breaks cost him 90 runs from25 overs.Warwickshire’s 482 gave them a formidable lead of 185 and Yorkshire began to crumble from the first over, Barker’s fourth ball bringing the prize wicket of Jacques Rudolph who jabbed outside off stump and was well caught by Tim Ambrose.Root played an exquisite cover drive off Barker but four balls later he sliced a fierce drive to gully when he was splendidly caught two-handed by Ian Westwood. Things went from bad to worse as Anthony McGrath became the first of two victims in seven balls for Wright who was making a good impression on loan from Essex.McGrath, still not off the mark, edged his 16th ball into Ambrose’s gloves and Gary Ballance shuffled across his stumps to fall lbw, also without scoring. Tea came at 40 for 4 and the slump continued after the interval as Gerard Brophy was bowled by Wright aiming to hit through midwicket and opener Joe Sayers was lbw to a full ball from Barker for 25.Richard Pyrah went on the attack by smacking six boundaries in his 28 off 17 balls before driving Barker gently to James Troughton at mid-off and in the next over Wright struck twice by bowling Rashid and having Ryan Sidebottom caught at first slip by Varun Chopra. At 91 for 9, Yorkshire had avoided their lowest score of the season – 86 against Nottinghamshire at Headingley – and the last pair of Wainwright and Patterson survived until Patterson had his stumps knocked back at 127 in the 38th over.

Back injury forces Geeves into retirement

The fast bowler Brett Geeves, who played three matches for Australia during 2008 and 2009, has retired from first-class cricket due to an ongoing back injury. Geeves, 29, has not given up on being part of the new Big Bash League, but he said his body was no longer up to the rigours of the longer formats. The back problem has signalled a disappointing end for Geeves, who made his ODI debut against Bangladesh in Darwin in 2008 and played another one-day international and a Twenty20 on the tour of South Africa the following year. He has not played first-class cricket since January 2010, and his sole appearance for Tasmania last summer was in a Ryobi Cup game in October.”My back’s about as stable as the Egyptian government at the moment, it’s time for me to part ways with cricket,” Geeves told ABC Radio on Monday. “After 17 months of rehab, I’m spent. Time to move forward.”Geeves will end his career with 140 wickets at 33.10 in 41 first-class appearances, along with 103 victims at 29.20 in one-day cricket. He will also be remembered for twice being stranded on 99 not out during the 2008-09 season, both times when the No.11 Tim Macdonald was dismissed, and Geeves ended his career without a century. He played in two one-day final victories with the Tigers, firstly in 2004-05 and then in 2007-08, when he earned the Man of the Match title in the decider for his 3 for 28 against Victoria. Geeves didn’t play in either of Tasmania’s Pura Cup/Sheffield Shield final victories, but he twice won the Ricky Ponting Medal as the state’s best player of the summer.”Cricket has been kind to me over the past decade, with a couple of premierships with Tasmania and opportunities to head overseas to play the game just to name a few,” he said. “I’m disappointed that injury has forced me to retire, however with the injury not looking to improve I had to make some decisions. My body has taken a real beating over the years and unfortunately it has ultimately brought an end to my first-class career.”Geeves could yet be picked up by one of the eight Big Bash League teams, but his future in any form of cricket will depend on whether his back allows him to play. He has already established himself in the media, on the ABC, as a columnist for Hobart’s newspaper, and in his entertaining blogs.

Stuart Clark has retained his playing contract with New South Wales despite stepping back from his on-field duties to focus on his new role as general manager of the Sydney Sixers Twenty20 side. Clark did not retire when he took up the administrative job in May, but he said he would only play for the Blues in times of crisis and would instead put his energy into his off-field role. However, he has been named in the state’s squad for 2011-12, an indication that Clark might not have played his last game for the Blues. The news was not so good for the wicketkeeper Daniel Smith, the allrounders Tim Armstrong and Scott Coyte, the spinner Luke Doran and the fast bowler Joe Mennie, all of whom were delisted. From their 2010-11 squad, New South Wales also lost Mark Cameron to Western Australia, Peter Forrest to Queensland and Nathan Bracken to retirement. The promising opener Nic Maddinson, who is currently on tour with Australia A in Zimbabwe, was upgraded from a rookie deal to a full contract, while the allrounder Sean Abbott, the fast bowler Nic Bills and the legspinner Nathan Brain were all made rookies.”The regular availability of Simon Katich for the RTA SpeedBlitz Blues will be of enormous benefit both to the team and for the development of our young players,” the Cricket NSW chief executive David Gilbert said, “whilst the return from injury of fast bowlers Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Burt Cockley is eagerly awaited.”With 10 players on Cricket Australia contracts, the Blues were in an envious position compared to other states after the recent collective bargaining talks between the players and Cricket Australia resulted in a reduced number of state deals being offered. New South Wales were able to name a squad of 29, including CA players and rookies.New South Wales squad Doug Bollinger (Cricket Australia contract), Beau Casson, Stuart Clark, Michael Clarke (CA), Burt Cockley, Trent Copeland, Patrick Cummins (CA), Brad Haddin (CA), Nathan Hauritz (CA), Josh Hazlewood, Moises Henriques, Phillip Hughes (CA), Phil Jaques, Simon Katich, Usman Khawaja (CA), Brett Lee (CA), Nic Maddinson, Peter Nevill, Steve O’Keefe, Ben Rohrer, Steven Smith (CA), Mitchell Starc, David Warner, Shane Watson (CA).Rookies Sean Abbott, Nic Bills, Nathan Brain, Timm van der Gugten, Adam Zampa.

Scorecard
Chaminda Vaas took seven wickets as Division Two leaders Northamptonshire took total command of the third day of their County Championship match against Glamorgan at Wantage Road.Northamptonshire declared on 461 for 6 at lunch, with Rob White making 140 and wicket-keeper David Murphy blasting a career-best 79 off 98 balls. Glamorgan were then skittled for just 72 in the afternoon, with former Sri Lanka seamer Vaas taking a fantastic 5 for 22 before he claimed 2for 36 in the visitor’s second innings as they closed on 119 for 3.After yesterday’s wash-out, Northants began the day on 325 for 3 with White resuming on 101 and Murphy on 12. Murphy went on to complete a half-century off 58 balls by smashing Graham Wagg for six over midwicket – a shot which also gave the hosts a full set of batting bonus points.White was to depart when he chipped Alex Jones to Dean Cosker at mid-on before Murphy holed out by launching Cosker to Mike Powell at deep fine leg. Captain Andrew Hall followed him back to the pavilion with the very next ball as he was trapped lbw by Cosker. Northamptonshire then declared during lunch, leaving David Sales unbeaten on 12 and James Middlebrook on 11.Glamorgan were to lose Will Bragg early on when he was caught leg before by Vaas, and Powell followed three balls later when he edged Vaas to Middlebrook at gully. Glamorgan captain Alviro Petersen (18) went when he was caught by Murphy off Vaas, before Jack Brooks got in on the act by forcing Gareth Rees to slice him to Stephen Peters at third slip for a duck.Ben Wright and Wagg both went without scoring by being caught behind by Murphy off Brooks and Vaas respectively. Glamorgan wicketkeeper Mark Wallace then dragged Vaas on to his middle stump to give Vaas his 30th five-wicket haul in first-class cricket.Robert Croft and Jones were then both bowled by Hall before the skipper completed the rout when he was edged by Cosker to Murphy.Following-on still 389 runs behind, Glamorgan lost Petersen for two in the third over when he nudged Vaas to Sales at second slip. Bragg finally brought some stability as he made a half-century off 83 balls, but he went cheaply on 52 when he launched Middlebrook to Brooks at long leg.Powell then feathered Vaas to Murphy in the third over before the close and Rees and Jones will resume tomorrow on 44 and 4 respectively.

Southern heavyweights seek turnaround

Given the nature of the Chepauk track, spin could be crucial to the outcome of the game, and despite Daniel Vettori’s skills, Chennai have the upperhand on that front

The Preview by Nitin Sundar15-Apr-2011Match factsSaturday, April 16
Start time 1600 (1030 GMT)Michael Hussey is back, and might open Chennai’s innings with M Vijay•AFP

Big pictureTwo traditional IPL heavyweights will face off in Chennai, a little disappointed with how things have panned out after wins in their respective opening games. Royal Challengers Bangalore will be the more confused lot. They began their season with a strong turnaround to beat Kochi but, since then, they have taken a couple of wrong turns. Their problems have stemmed from muddled thinking. Tillakaratne Dilshan and AB de Villiers – two of the most prolific batsmen in the World Cup – crawled without intent to a score of 140 against Mumbai, which later proved woefully inadequate. On Thursday, chasing 175 against Deccan, Bangalore inexplicably promoted Zaheer Khan to No. 3. Against Dale Steyn, of all people. Steyn scattered Zaheer’s stumps third ball, showing up just how hare-brained the plan was. Will Bangalore have better ideas for their third match in five days, all at different venues?Chennai’s problems, on the other hand, have been on the execution front. They held their nerve and backed themselves to the hilt against Kolkata, winning from a hopeless situation, but followed it up with a shambolic show against Punjab. Catches went down, regulation saves were fumbled, too many balls were served up on and outside leg stump, and just like that, Paul Valthaty became an instant hero. Albie Morkel bowled too many full tosses, Tim Southee struggled to land his yorkers and R Ashwin’s carom balls weren’t on the mark. MS Dhoni likes to back his players, and will be averse to making wholesale changes after just one poor game, but Michael Hussey’s arrival might force his hand. Given the nature of the Chepauk track, spin could be crucial to the outcome of the game, and despite Daniel Vettori’s skills, Chennai have the upperhand on that front.Team talkHussey opened the innings with M Vijay for Chennai in last year’s Champions League and the inherent contrast in their methods made them a successful pairing. Given Chennai’s muscle in the middle order, Dhoni might want to keep Hussey at the top and push S Anirudha lower down. Doug Bollinger is also set to join the team, and might replace Morkel, while Scott Styris could be making way for Hussey.Mayank Agarwal has looked completely out of his depth at the top, and Bangalore will consider benching him. Saurabh Tiwary and Cheteshwar Pujara are wasted at Nos. 6 and 7, and there is a case for pushing everyone up a spot, which could mean Virat Kohli opening the innings with Tillakaratne Dilshan. The bowling is a bigger worry, with Abhimanyu Mithun, S Aravind and Ryan Ninan bleeding runs in the first three games.Predict the playing XIs for this match. Play ESPNcricinfo Team selector. In the spotlightThis is the quietest start Suresh Raina has had to an IPL season. He is the only batsman to have topped 400 runs in each season of the IPL, and will be itching to get into prime-hitting form. Daniel Vettori will know Raina’s propensity to heave over cow corner, with the spin. Will he tempt him on Friday, with flight, loop and a man prowling at deep midwicket?Suraj Randiv has had an eventful couple of games: he has seen his offbreaks slugged over the leg side, and he has had his doosras edged to third man, and at times miscued to fielders. How will his luck turn out against Bangalore?Prime numbers Thirteen centuries have been hit in the IPL. Chennai and Rajasthan have conceded most of them (three each) The only current Bangalore batsman with an IPL ton is AB de Villiers. That century came against Chennai in 2009, though de Villiers was playing for Delhi thenThe chatter”You win some games, at the same time you lose some games. The important thing is to learn lessons from this defeat.”
MS Dhoni hopes his team doesn’t repeat the mistakes they made against Punjab
