Everton: Two clubs battling for Cenk Tosun

Everton’s Cenk Tosun is the subject of a ‘transfer war’ between Super Lig outfit Besiktas and Saudi Arabian team Al-Hilal, according to Turkish news outlet Takvim.

The lowdown

It was Besiktas who sold the Turkey striker to Everton for £27m back in January 2018. He signed a four-and-a-half-year contract upon his arrival at Goodison Park, and that deal is due to expire this summer, leaving him free to negotiate pre-contract terms with foreign clubs.

Tosun, who was out until November after suffering a patella rupture, has played a mere 11 minutes of football for the Toffees this season. He did feature in the matchday squad last weekend against Leeds United, but Frank Lampard left him on the bench.

The latest

As per Takvim, Al-Hilal have reportedly offered Tosun a two-year contract worth €5m (£4.2m) per year, which comes to approximately £80,500 per week. That would be a healthy 25% increase on the £60,000-a- week he is currently earning at Everton.

However, Besitkas, are also determined to bring him back and will ‘use all their trump cards’ in a bid to do so.

Tosun is expected to make a decision on his next destination in June, although it seems that staying at Everton is out of the question.

The verdict

It’s hard to dress up the signing of Tosun as anything other than a comprehensive failure.

The 30-year-old ranks among Everton’s top 20 most expensive signings but he has only made 61 appearances in four years, contributing a mere 11 goals.

Sam Allardyce, the Blues’ manager at the time, confidently declared that Tosun was the ‘best in Europe’ in his price bracket. Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish also dubbed him an ‘excellent’ player after he sealed a loan move to Selhurst Park in 2020, but it simply hasn’t worked out for the striker in England.

Celtic: Noa Lang is one that got away

Celtic laid dormant like a small church mouse last season as the Hoops crumbled, fell and ultimately watched their stronghold over Scottish football evaporate into thin air.

It was a disastrous campaign for the Bhoys as they failed to win a single trophy and saw the back of their former manager at Parkhead in Neil Lennon.

Yet, enter Ange Postecoglou, an Australian-Greek coach who has overseen a quite colossal rebuilding project at Parkhead and put Celtic firmly back at the top of the Premiership.

He has overseen a Scottish League Cup triumph and few would now bet against Celtic winning the title as they sit six points ahead of fierce rivals, Rangers.

A number of his signings have been superb with the likes of Liel Abada, Kyogo Furuhashi, Giorgos Giakoumakis and Jota finding themselves involved in a mammoth 79 goals between them this term.

Yet, there is uncertainty over the future of Jota who Celtic could sign for £6.5m due to an agreement in his loan contract from Benfica.

Should they fail to agree a deal they may well have nightmares over a move that Lennon didn’t seal back in the summer of 2020.

That happens to be one for Noa Lang, a flying winger whose stock is now rising all the time.

Reports nearly two years ago now suggested the Hoops were fighting it out to bring the Netherlands international to Glasgow. Ultimately, a move didn’t happen and he eventually ended up joining Club Brugge from Dutch giants, Ajax, last summer.

His form since has been imperious with the attacker now dubbed a “phenomenon” by journalist Peter Vandenbempt, scoring nine goals and racking up 13 assists for the Belgian side.

That kind of form has seen his value rise exponentially, so much so that Arsenal are eyeing up a blockbuster £33m move for him.

Hindsight is a thing of beauty but it’s evident that Celtic missed the target when putting Lang in their crosshairs.

A failure to conclude a deal has not only seen them miss out on a wonderfully gifted footballer but also a pretty hefty payday too.

You can certainly file the 22-year-old under one who got away.

Trott and Tredwell earn international recalls

Jonathan Trott has earned a one-day international recall as a replacement for the injured Kevin Pietersen while Graeme Swann has been rested, allowing James Tredwell to come into the squad for the three-match ODI series against Bangladesh that begins July

Jonathan Trott has earned a one-day international recall as a replacement for the injured Kevin Pietersen while Graeme Swann has been rested, allowing James Tredwell to come into the squad for the three-match ODI series against Bangladesh that begins July 8.Trott was left out of England’s one-day squad after their tour to South Africa last year but has been in good limited-overs form for Warwickshire this season and scored a century in England Lions’ victory against West Indies A last month. His chance comes because Pietersen suffered a quad strain during the 42-run defeat to Australia in the final ODI at Lord’s and will now undergo a rehabilitation period. National selector Geoff Miller feels the though the injury of no great concern England are erring on the side of caution.”I think it is a minor injury,” said Miller. “But we are obviously wary, because there is a lot of cricket coming up over the rest of the summer and the winter as well. I am sure he will be all right [for the forthcoming npower Test series against Pakistan] but can’t say that categorically at this stage. I think it is a slight one as opposed to a major one. We are just being cautious. I think he will be all right in the very near future.”Though the injury provides a welcome return for Trott, who was once inked in in all formats for England, he is likely to start the series on the sidelines with Ian Bell slotting into Pietersen’s No. 3 spot.Tredwell’s inclusion comes because Swann, who has been an ever-present in all formats for England over the past 12 months, has been given a period out to rest. He will, however, be free to play Championship cricket for Nottinghamshire.”Graeme Swann has been involved in all forms of the game for some time now and this forthcoming period has been identified as the best opportunity to ensure Graeme has a suitable break ahead of a demanding schedule this summer and during the winter,” said Miller.Tredwell made his Test and ODI debut against Bangladesh in March but was leap-frogged by Michael Yardy into the side against Australia, with the view that he and Swann were too similar in styles.”James Tredwell and Jonathan Trott have previously been involved with the England One-Day set up and will be excellent additions to the full England squad from the England Lions. Both have been in good form for the Lions and will relish the opportunity to make their mark in limited overs at the top level.”The only other change from the squad selected for the series against Australia is Ajmal Shahzad’s inclusion ahead of Ryan Sidebottom. Shahzad impressed with pace and reverse-swing on Test debut against Bangladesh last month and has also been England Lions’ best fast bowler in the recent games against West Indies A and India A. The England selectors may view this as another opportunity to give him full international experience, having already established Sidebottom’s credentials.England squad Andrew Strauss (capt), Craig Kieswetter, Ian Bell, Paul Collingwood, Eoin Morgan, Michael Yardy, Luke Wright, Tim Bresnan, James Tredwell, Stuart Broad, James Anderson, Ajmal Shahzad, Jonathan Trott.

Hutton on Aaron Ramsey’s Rangers future

Rangers will attempt to pull off an ‘incredible deal’ for Aaron Ramsey this summer, Alan Hutton has claimed.

The former Gers and Scotland left-back was speaking to Football Insider.

The lowdown

Ramsey is on loan from Juventus until the end of the 2021/22 season, although the loan agreement between Rangers and the Bianconeri is not believed to include an option to buy.

However, transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has said that Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side will have ‘priority’ over other suitors when it comes to the end of the season.

Ramsey has made two substitute appearances in the Premiership so far and started for the first time against Annan Athletic in the Scottish Cup on Saturday.

The latest

BBC Radio 5 Live pundit Hutton thinks that Rangers will be harbouring ambitions of landing Ramsey long-term but stressed that the possibility of a permanent deal will come down to wage demands and the player’s ambitions.

The ex-Gers defender told Football Insider: “If he sets the league alight and has an incredible rest of the season, then maybe he’ll look to move on somewhere else. Rangers will be looking for an incredible deal, but it’s all going to come down to figures.

“What he’s on now is way outside the ballpark, so unless there’s a deal to be done – you really can’t see it happening in the summer. We’ll have to wait and see.”

The verdict

Hutton is right to be sceptical. According to David Ornstein, Ramsey earns a whopping £400,000 per week at Juventus, and a loan move was only viable because the Serie A club agreed to foot a portion of that salary.

Given that Rangers’ top earner at present (Alfredo Morelos) earns only £33,000 per week, you’d think that Ramsey would need to agree a massive pay cut before any permanent move becomes realistic.

Also, as Danny Mills has suggested, it’s possible that the 31-year-old views his move to Ibrox as a means of building up his fitness before looking to secure a Premier League return in the summer.

Rangers have pulled masterstroke with gem

Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst has enjoy a largely successful return to Ibrox since arriving as manager after playing for the club earlier in his career.

He has only lost one match in all competitions since taking over from Steven Gerrard and has guided the Gers into the knockout stages of the Europa League, where they will face Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund later this month.

The head coach made a few additions to the squad in the January transfer window to stamp his own mark on the team, but a decision he made in his first game may be the best one he has taken so far.

Masterstroke

Van Bronckhorst opted to select Calvin Bassey at centre-back in his first match – against Sparta Prague at Ibrox – and he has pulled off a masterstroke with the former Leicester enforcer in recent months.

At the time of the Dutchman’s arrival as Gers boss, Bassey was valued at £360k by Transfermarkt. This was down from the £450k at which he was rated in January 2021 under Steven Gerrard, suggesting that the ex-Feyenoord coach picked him up at a low point in his Gers career.

He was behind Borna Barisic at left-back and also watching on as Leon Balogun and Connor Goldson started in the middle, but Van Bronckhorst pulled off a masterstroke by opting to go with him as a central defender after a knock for Balogun opened up a spot at the back.

Instead of going with natural centre-back Jack Simpson or looking to recall Nikola Katic in January, the head coach placed his faith in Bassey.

Shortly after joining the club, Van Bronckhorst heaped praise on the way the Nigerian adapted to his new position, saying: “I’ve been really impressed with Calvin [Bassey] as he does not have a lot of experience in the central positions. He has a lot of physical strength and we will help him to develop and grow. He is very open to learning and is full of energy.

“I think he has the physical ability to play there and we’re helping him a lot in that position when he has to pass when he has to dribble, the position he has to take when the other defenders got the ball.”

Leicester City’s under-23 manager Steven Beaglehole previously dubbed Bassey “phenomenal” and that is what the defender has been for the most part since the Dutchman came in. Rangers kept seven clean sheets in nine games after Van Bronckhorst picked Bassey at centre-back alongside Goldson, with the 22-year-old achieving a SofaScore rating of 7.0 or higher in seven of those matches.

At the time of writing (11/02/22), Transfermarkt value him at £900k. This is a whopping 150% increase within the space of around six months, showing that he has turned his Gers career around and is now on an upwards trajectory since his switch to centre-back. Therefore, his development has been a masterstroke from his manager, and hopefully he will continue to blossom.

Trott ton overcomes depleted Durham

David Payne served up the best-ever figures by a Gloucestershire bowler inLimited-overs cricket but still finished on the losing side in their CB40 match with Essex at Chelmsford

09-May-2010Warwickshire 201 for 3 beat Durham 200 for 9 by seven wickets
ScorecardA clinical century by Jonathan Trott maintained Warwickshire’s 100% CB40 record as they inflicted Durham’s first defeat of the season by sevenwickets at Edgbaston.Opener Phil Mustard propped up Durham’s total of 200 for 9 but theirinjury-hit attack – even with Steve Harmison back in the line-up – did not have the firepower to make it a true contest.Trott’s 103 from 98 balls – his highest score since his Test debut centuryagainst Australia last August – set up a Warwickshire victory with five overs to spare after a partnership of 117 with Jim Troughton. With seven bowlers unavailable and Liam Plunkett playing only as a batsman,Durham recalled Harmison for the first time since he took four wickets in 20 overs in the champion county’s fixture with the MCC in Abu Dhabi in March.A trapped nerve in his back forced him to miss the first month of the season and in a low-key comeback he bowled six overs, split into three spells, for 27 runs.England batsman Ian Bell pulled a short ball from Ben Harmison straight to deep square leg as the home side lost two wickets in reaching 59 by the 11th over. But Trott, with 13 fours, headed off any further difficulties and Warwickshire were only 25 short of their target when he was run out by Chris Rushworth’s direct throw from mid-off. Troughton remained unbeaten with 66 from 76 balls. That Durham even reached 200 was largely due to Mustard. For the second time in three completed matches in the competition, the 27-year-old wicketkeeper was his county’s top scorer.Having made 74 in the opening victory over Hampshire at the Riverside, hebatted through to the 28th over here, racking up 61 from 73 balls until he was fifth out at 141.A low-key Durham innings included only 12 fours – five of these to Mustard – and two sixes, the first by Ian Blackwell in the second over and the other from Steve Harmison from the fourth ball he faced.Harmison’s towering straight drive marginally dented Darren Maddy’s figures, but the former Leicestershire allrounder, now approaching his 36th birthday, still finished with 3 for 25, his best one-day return for Warwickshire.Maddy gave little away as his nagging wicket-to-wicket line pressured thebatsmen into mistakes. Mustard was leg-before, whipping across the line, and the medium-pacer was in a second spell when he bowled Gareth Breese and Plunkett in successive overs.Boyd Rankin, back from World Twenty20 action with Ireland, and Keith Barkerboth took two wickets in their first county appearances of the season and wrist spinner Imran Tahir dismissed Will Smith and Ben Stokes in his first 10 deliveries.
