Celtic: Noa Lang is one that got away

Celtic laid dormant like a small church mouse last season as the Hoops crumbled, fell and ultimately watched their stronghold over Scottish football evaporate into thin air.

It was a disastrous campaign for the Bhoys as they failed to win a single trophy and saw the back of their former manager at Parkhead in Neil Lennon.

Yet, enter Ange Postecoglou, an Australian-Greek coach who has overseen a quite colossal rebuilding project at Parkhead and put Celtic firmly back at the top of the Premiership.

He has overseen a Scottish League Cup triumph and few would now bet against Celtic winning the title as they sit six points ahead of fierce rivals, Rangers.

A number of his signings have been superb with the likes of Liel Abada, Kyogo Furuhashi, Giorgos Giakoumakis and Jota finding themselves involved in a mammoth 79 goals between them this term.

Yet, there is uncertainty over the future of Jota who Celtic could sign for £6.5m due to an agreement in his loan contract from Benfica.

Should they fail to agree a deal they may well have nightmares over a move that Lennon didn’t seal back in the summer of 2020.

That happens to be one for Noa Lang, a flying winger whose stock is now rising all the time.

Reports nearly two years ago now suggested the Hoops were fighting it out to bring the Netherlands international to Glasgow. Ultimately, a move didn’t happen and he eventually ended up joining Club Brugge from Dutch giants, Ajax, last summer.

His form since has been imperious with the attacker now dubbed a “phenomenon” by journalist Peter Vandenbempt, scoring nine goals and racking up 13 assists for the Belgian side.

That kind of form has seen his value rise exponentially, so much so that Arsenal are eyeing up a blockbuster £33m move for him.

Hindsight is a thing of beauty but it’s evident that Celtic missed the target when putting Lang in their crosshairs.

A failure to conclude a deal has not only seen them miss out on a wonderfully gifted footballer but also a pretty hefty payday too.

You can certainly file the 22-year-old under one who got away.

Jonathan Trott has earned a one-day international recall as a replacement for the injured Kevin Pietersen while Graeme Swann has been rested, allowing James Tredwell to come into the squad for the three-match ODI series against Bangladesh that begins July 8.Trott was left out of England’s one-day squad after their tour to South Africa last year but has been in good limited-overs form for Warwickshire this season and scored a century in England Lions’ victory against West Indies A last month. His chance comes because Pietersen suffered a quad strain during the 42-run defeat to Australia in the final ODI at Lord’s and will now undergo a rehabilitation period. National selector Geoff Miller feels the though the injury of no great concern England are erring on the side of caution.”I think it is a minor injury,” said Miller. “But we are obviously wary, because there is a lot of cricket coming up over the rest of the summer and the winter as well. I am sure he will be all right [for the forthcoming npower Test series against Pakistan] but can’t say that categorically at this stage. I think it is a slight one as opposed to a major one. We are just being cautious. I think he will be all right in the very near future.”Though the injury provides a welcome return for Trott, who was once inked in in all formats for England, he is likely to start the series on the sidelines with Ian Bell slotting into Pietersen’s No. 3 spot.Tredwell’s inclusion comes because Swann, who has been an ever-present in all formats for England over the past 12 months, has been given a period out to rest. He will, however, be free to play Championship cricket for Nottinghamshire.”Graeme Swann has been involved in all forms of the game for some time now and this forthcoming period has been identified as the best opportunity to ensure Graeme has a suitable break ahead of a demanding schedule this summer and during the winter,” said Miller.Tredwell made his Test and ODI debut against Bangladesh in March but was leap-frogged by Michael Yardy into the side against Australia, with the view that he and Swann were too similar in styles.”James Tredwell and Jonathan Trott have previously been involved with the England One-Day set up and will be excellent additions to the full England squad from the England Lions. Both have been in good form for the Lions and will relish the opportunity to make their mark in limited overs at the top level.”The only other change from the squad selected for the series against Australia is Ajmal Shahzad’s inclusion ahead of Ryan Sidebottom. Shahzad impressed with pace and reverse-swing on Test debut against Bangladesh last month and has also been England Lions’ best fast bowler in the recent games against West Indies A and India A. The England selectors may view this as another opportunity to give him full international experience, having already established Sidebottom’s credentials.England squad Andrew Strauss (capt), Craig Kieswetter, Ian Bell, Paul Collingwood, Eoin Morgan, Michael Yardy, Luke Wright, Tim Bresnan, James Tredwell, Stuart Broad, James Anderson, Ajmal Shahzad, Jonathan Trott.

Rangers have pulled masterstroke with gem

Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst has enjoy a largely successful return to Ibrox since arriving as manager after playing for the club earlier in his career.

He has only lost one match in all competitions since taking over from Steven Gerrard and has guided the Gers into the knockout stages of the Europa League, where they will face Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund later this month.

The head coach made a few additions to the squad in the January transfer window to stamp his own mark on the team, but a decision he made in his first game may be the best one he has taken so far.

Masterstroke

Van Bronckhorst opted to select Calvin Bassey at centre-back in his first match – against Sparta Prague at Ibrox – and he has pulled off a masterstroke with the former Leicester enforcer in recent months.

At the time of the Dutchman’s arrival as Gers boss, Bassey was valued at £360k by Transfermarkt. This was down from the £450k at which he was rated in January 2021 under Steven Gerrard, suggesting that the ex-Feyenoord coach picked him up at a low point in his Gers career.

He was behind Borna Barisic at left-back and also watching on as Leon Balogun and Connor Goldson started in the middle, but Van Bronckhorst pulled off a masterstroke by opting to go with him as a central defender after a knock for Balogun opened up a spot at the back.

Instead of going with natural centre-back Jack Simpson or looking to recall Nikola Katic in January, the head coach placed his faith in Bassey.

Shortly after joining the club, Van Bronckhorst heaped praise on the way the Nigerian adapted to his new position, saying: “I’ve been really impressed with Calvin [Bassey] as he does not have a lot of experience in the central positions. He has a lot of physical strength and we will help him to develop and grow. He is very open to learning and is full of energy.

“I think he has the physical ability to play there and we’re helping him a lot in that position when he has to pass when he has to dribble, the position he has to take when the other defenders got the ball.”

Leicester City’s under-23 manager Steven Beaglehole previously dubbed Bassey “phenomenal” and that is what the defender has been for the most part since the Dutchman came in. Rangers kept seven clean sheets in nine games after Van Bronckhorst picked Bassey at centre-back alongside Goldson, with the 22-year-old achieving a SofaScore rating of 7.0 or higher in seven of those matches.

At the time of writing (11/02/22), Transfermarkt value him at £900k. This is a whopping 150% increase within the space of around six months, showing that he has turned his Gers career around and is now on an upwards trajectory since his switch to centre-back. Therefore, his development has been a masterstroke from his manager, and hopefully he will continue to blossom.

Michael Yardy helps Sussex start with victory

Sussex made a successful start to their defence of the Twenty20 Cup with a convincing 52-run win over Somerset in front of a near full-house 7,000 crowd at Hove

Sussex made a successful start to their defence of the Twenty20 Cup with a convincing 52-run win over Somerset in front of a near full-house 7,000 crowd at Hove. Somerset, pre-season favourites to win the tournament, appeared to be in control when they restricted Sussex to 155 for 7, but the home side bowled and fielded superbly to dismiss Somerset for 103 in 17.1 overs.Craig Kieswetter and Marcus Trescothick gave them a decent platform with a stand of 39 but after Trescothick failed to pick James Kirtley’s slower ball and was caught at mid off, Somerset lost four top-order wickets for 14 runs in four overs.Sussex skipper Mike Yardy, reprising the role he played so effectively in England’s World Cup triumph, picked up Nick Compton and James Hildreth as both missed attempted sweeps while Ed Joyce pulled off an excellent catch on the third man boundary to intercept Zander de Bruyn’s sliced drive.Opener Kieswetter and Jos Buttler revived Somerset with a fifth-wicket stand of 33 in four overs but when Buttler was brilliantly run out from backward point by Joyce the Somerset reply went into a steep decline with their last six wickets falling for just 13 runs in 29 balls.Kirtley picked up three for three in seven balls including Kieswetter, whose innings of 47 from 41 balls was ended by a superb running catch on the cover boundary by substitute fielder Ragheb Aga.Earlier, Luke Wright and Murray Goodwin had given Sussex’s innings the perfect platform with a stand of 58 in six overs for the first wicket. Wright hit 36 of his 39 runs from 19 balls in boundaries but Sussex lost wickets regularly after he sliced a drive to backward point.Goodwin hit a run-a-ball 30 but accurate bowling from left-arm spinner Murali Kartik and De Bruyn stifled Sussex’s momentum. Dwayne Smith, who scored 338 runs in last season’s competition, was leg before on the walk first ball to Kartik and none of the Sussex middle order seemed to get to grips with a two-paced pitch. But they were given some vital momentum at the end by Yasir Arafat, who later picked up two for nine from three overs, and wicketkeeper Andy Hodd who added 35 in the last three overs to give them something to defend.

Wolves target Botman wanted by Tottenham

Wolves transfer target Sven Botman is wanted by Tottenham in the summer transfer window, according to a fresh update which emerged on Thursday evening.

The Lowdown: Wolves linked with Botman move

Wanderers ended up not making any defensive additions in January but one player they were linked with signing was Lille centre-back Botman, as journalist Luke Hatfield claimed Scott Sellars and co ‘will still be keen’ after their summer interest.

That comes following intense interest in summer 2021, so much so the player himself even commented on the links to Molineux.

The 22-year-old ended up staying put at Lille in both windows, however, and he has continued to shine for the reigning Ligue 1 champions, making 15 league starts this season.

Botman isn’t without other suitors though – newly rich Newcastle were heavily linked too – and now another club has jumped in the mix for the summer.

The Latest: Spurs want summer transfer

According to The Telegraph, Spurs are eyeing up a summer transfer for the Dutchman, whose current Lille deal expires at the end of the 2024/25 season.

Antonio Conte sees him as someone who could strengthen his side’s defence moving forward and will pursue a move for him.

The Verdict: Potential blow for Wanderers

The idea of Botman joining Spurs over them is undoubtedly a blow for Bruno Lage, even though he isn’t short of defensive quality currently, with Max Kilman, Conor Coady and Romain Saiss so impressive this season.

The young centre-back has been a colossal presence for Lille in recent times, averaging 3.2 aerial duel wins per game in the league last season and a whopping 4.9 clearances per match this time around. He has been hailed as ‘amazing‘ by AC Milan director Frederic Massara.

At 22, he could be a long-term signing for Wolves, too, which is an added bonus, especially with Coady approaching 30 and Saiss already reaching that milestone.

Tottenham don’t have much more to offer on the pitch than Wolves at the moment, but their willingness to spend big on the right players – their transfer record is over £50m and they have splashed over £20m on 15 other occasions – may prove a thorn in Wolves’ side.

Ismael outlines WBA transfer plans

West Bromwich Albion manager Valerien Ismael has outlined his plans for the remainder of the transfer window, admitting that the priority is now outgoing whilst not ruling out the possibility of new faces coming in.

What’s the story?

When speaking to the media, the Albion manager said: “Everything is on outgoings.

“It could be the typical case, that it’s a last-minute transfer, that it’s in the last few minutes that something happens. We will see. I think maybe next week things will take more speed.

“But [we] are working behind the scenes to make sure first we can get some outgoings before we can get some incoming.”The Baggies managed to make their priority signing on the first day of the window as striker Daryl Dike joined from MLS outfit Orlando City on a permanent basis, having been on loan at Barnsley under the Frenchman for the second half of last season. With just over a week left until the transfer window closes, the Championship promotion chasers will be looking to offload some players, with the early termination of striker Jordan Hugill’s loan deal from Norwich City a priority. However, with game time set to also be limited back at Carrow Road, it is understood that the Canaries want to find the 29-year-old a new club to join on loan before recalling with Hull City and Millwall interested.Should the next week go smoothly, there may also be enough time to bring in another new player.West Brom fans will be relievedWith aspirations of an instant return to the Premier League taking a hit in recent weeks, West Brom need to get their season back on track by offloading dead wood and potentially adding another player or two to their ranks who can make an impact. Consequently, fans should be relieved with Ismael’s plans to do exactly that.Prior to Saturday’s 3-0 home win over Peterborough United, the West Midlands club had gone on a run of just two wins in ten Championship outings which saw them slip out of the automatic promotion places.Sat in fifth and four points off of second place Bournemouth, promotion is still very much a realistic target for this campaign, however, the coming weeks will make a major impact, hence why tinkering within the squad will be vital.Albion have been excellent defensively this term, in fact, they remain the second tier’s best defenders having conceded a league-low of 20 goals; it’s at the other end where they’ve struggled.Ismael’s side have only managed 34 goals in 27 games, with only one other side in the top eight (Middlesbrough) having scored fewer. To put it into perspective, top of the league Fulham have scored over double the Baggies’ tally with 73.It is unknown how West Brom’s squad will look on 1 February but what is for sure is that if a new face is to come through the door at The Hawthorns, one will have to leave beforehand to make it possible. In other news: Sky Sports pundit drops worrying WBA January claim, it would be a “huge blow” for Ismael
