The Lowdown: Hammond hired

As per Sky Sports, the St. James’ Park faithful have now hired former Celtic and Reading Director of Football (DoF) Nick Hammond on a short-term deal as a transfer consultant.

He will oversee the January transfer window, and has been tasked with bringing in players to help in their relegation fight.

The Latest: Lanzini eyed

According to 90min, one of Hammond’s first signings could be Lanzini, as the North East club are eyeing a loan move for the West Ham United ace next month.

David Moyes would reportedly not mind letting him leave on loan, and given the situation that the Tyneside outfit find themselves in, it could prove to be a good move for all parties.

The Verdict: Makes sense

While Lanzini has been starting more regularly in the Premier League, he has been far from first choice throughout the season, and so may want a loan move away in order to play more football.

There is no doubt that the talent is there, as Lionel Messi even once hailed him by admiring his potential and claiming that he could play for FC Barcelona when he was there.

BBC pundit Stephen Warnock went as far as to claim that he was ‘magic’ and capable of ‘genius’ after impressing away at Manchester City earlier this season, and he could give Eddie Howe’s team that extra bit of firepower to keep them up.

Nonetheless, if they end up getting relegated, Lanzini could then just return to the Hammers after his loan spell, and so the deal would make a lot of sense for all parties involved.

Kemar Roach’s Test career consists of a pair of defeats to Bangladesh, but his confidence clearly remains undiminished. After his first day’s play as a member of a full-strength West Indian squad, Roach spoke openly of exploiting Ricky Ponting’s weaknesses, his desire to claim the final five Australian wickets for under 30 runs on Friday and his unflinching belief that the tourists can win the Gabba Test.Anyone expecting West Indies to meekly surrender to the Australians this series clearly hadn’t counted on the 21-year-old Bajan quick. In 16 overs of lively pace bowling, Roach terrorised Ponting – striking him a painful blow to the groin, rapping him on the pads with a delivery that, if sent for review, would have resulted in a wicket – before eventually dismissing the Australian captain with the ball of the day. And all at a top speed touching 150 kmh.Such was his determination, few would have bet against Ponting converting his half-century into triple figures. Eight boundaries and a six had cannoned off his blade in the first session but Roach responded with a brisk and disciplined spell after lunch to rein him in. Then came the moment: a fuller, straighter delivery that drew Ponting into a push around his off stump. Em relação à postura em campo, Petros usou uma artimanha da Chapecoense como aprendizado para o Tricolor. O time catarinense chegou a estar ganhando por 2 a 0 até os 26 minutos do segundo tempo, levando o empate aos 37, e segurou o jogo como pôde. O meio-campista do São Paulo lembrou disso ao ouvir que os adversários reclamaram de irregularidade no gol de Gilberto.

– Não reclamaram da mão no primeiro tempo e com o Maicosuel. A arbitragem foi bem. Eles ganharam quase 12 minutos de cera, porque permitem isso no futebol brasileiro, e está na regra. Esperamos que a gente aprenda e cozinhe o jogo como fizeram quando estivermos ganhando.

Newcastle are looking increasingly likely to sign Lazio goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha, according to Italian newspaper Il Messaggero (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown

The form of Newcastle’s goalkeepers has been a real problem so far this season, contributing to the Premier League’s joint-worst defensive record.

If you go by the shot-stopping metric of ‘post-shot expected goals minus goals allowed’, Freddie Woodman (-3.7) and Karl Darlow (-3.3) both figure in the league’s bottom five.

Martin Dubravka, who finished last season as the Magpies’ number one, has returned to the substitutes’ bench in recent weeks after recovering from a foot injury.

However, Newcastle may also look to the transfer market for a solution, and crucially Strakosha is out of contract at the end of the season.

The latest

Il Messaggero claimed (via Sport Witness) that Strakosha is on his way out of the Stadio Olimpico.

The report added that he will ‘probably’ end up at Newcastle, although it’s not clear whether he’ll join midway through the season or next summer.

The verdict

All of Strakosha’s minutes this season have come in the Europa League, with Pepe Reina recognised as Maurizio Sarri’s first-choice in Serie A.

The Albanian has kept two clean sheets in his four outings in Europe, redeeming himself for an almighty howler against Galatasaray in September. BT Sport’s official Twitter account called it an ‘absolute nightmare’ and their clip of the incident was viewed 132,000 times as it went viral at the time.

However, it seems that Newcastle will look past that moment to forget. Overall, the 26-year-old has played 181 matches for the Rome-based outfit, recording 53 shutouts, while he was also labelled ‘explosive’ by former goalkeeping team-mate Silvio Proto.

Such praise and statistics would suggest that he could indeed be very shrewd acquisition on a cut-price deal or a free transfer by the Magpies.
