Aston Villa: Fans react to Keinan Davis report

Birmingham Live shared a story on Monday, looking at Aston Villa forward Keinan Davis.

They claimed the 23-year-old could be the key in utilising the likes of summer signings Emiliano Buendia and Danny Ings, which, as to be expected, had plenty of Villa fans talking on social media.

Davis suffered an injury over the summer which stopped him from joining Stoke City on loan. He hasn’t featured under Dean Smith this season but recently netted on his return for the Under-23’s against Sunderland.

Birmingham Live focused on the 6ft 2 striker and how he could make an impact in Smith’s system using a front two.

They believe Davis’ physical presence and hold up play may help the likes of Buendia and Ings, who have struggled on the whole in a 3-5-2 formation.

Preview: West Brom XI vs Swansea

Valerien Ismael’s West Bromwich Albion side head into Wednesday evening’s Championship fixture in a fine run of form, with the Baggies’ picking up ten points from a possible 15 over their last five fixtures.

However, with Albion’s hosts, Swansea City, having secured eight points of their own over their last five games, Ismael will know that the clash with Russell Martin’s side will not be an easy fixture, especially considering the game is being played at the Liberty Stadium – where the Swans have lost just once all season.

So, will the 46-year-old make any changes to the team which started in the 1-0 win over Birmingham City last Friday? Here’s how we think West Brom could line up against Swansea, along with the latest team and injury news…

With Ismael confirming in his pre-match press conference that Grady Diangana will be unavailable for selection for the trip to Swansea – as the 23-year-old is yet to recover from an ongoing hamstring injury – in addition to revealing that Alex Mowatt is also a doubt for the fixture due to a toe injury, we predict the Frenchman will make two changes to the team which lined up against the Blues last week.

The back five remains unchanged – with Sam Johnstone starting in goal, Matt Clarke, Kyle Bartley and Semi Ajayi making up the back three and Conor Townsend and Darnell Furlong starting at left and right wing-back respectively.

The first change comes in the middle of the park, with Mowatt dropping out of the starting XI, and Brighton & Hove Albion loanee Jayson Molumby – who impressed after replacing Mowatt against Birmingham – taking the 26-year-old’s spot in central midfield alongside Jake Livermore.

In attack, Callum Robinson retains his spot up top, as does Karlan Grant on the left-wing, while, in the absence of Grady Diangana, the £38k-per-week Robert Snodgrass is handed his first Championship start of the season, with 30-year-old right-winger Matt Phillips having to make do with a spot on the bench.

Spurs make Vlahovic contact

As per TUTTOmercatoWEB, a Tottenham Hotspur development has surfaced as they keep their sights firmly on Fiorentina star Dusan Vlahovic.

The Lowdown: Tottenham miss out…

As reported in the summer window, Tottenham and managing director Fabio Paratici were targeting a new striker to support star frontman Harry Kane.

Indeed, the likes of Lautaro Martinez and Vlahovic were on the Italian transfer chief’s list of targets and reports even claimed that Tottenham made a bid.

Now, as Spurs retain their interest, TMW have come out with some news.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-updates/” title=”Spurs updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Spurs make contact…

As per the Italian source, contacts between La Viola and Spurs are ongoing with the Lilywhites ‘working’ behind the scenes.

It is claimed that the 21-year-old is ‘in the sights of Tottenham’ and he is a ‘strong Spurs idea’ as Paratici and co turn up the heat.

This is despite Paratici’s denial recently as he aims to bolster Nuno Espirito Santo’s ranks.

The Verdict: Get it done…

Lauded as a ‘really exciting’ player by Serie A critic Conor Clancy (The Transfer Tavern), Vlahovic is arguably one of the best attacking prospects in world football and comes as a very astute potential alternative to Kane.

The Serbia international bagged 21 goals in the Italian top flight alone last season and it’s safe to say Spurs could use more of this proficiency.

If Tottenham can swing a move, they would be orchestrating a brilliant bit of business.

Clark shocked at Australia call-up

Stuart Clark has been called into the Australian squad after Brett Geeves was forced to fly home from the South Africa tour with a fractured foot

So unprepared was Stuart Clark for selection on Australia’s limited overs tour of South Africa, he did not have a passport when the call came. “I’ve just spent the day organising another one,” he said. “My original passport is still at the British consulate.”Clark had been preparing to fly to England this week for a county stint with Kent, for whom he was to debut on April 21 in a County Championship match against Northamptonshire. But those plans were scuppered with a surprise phone call from Michael Brown, Cricket Australia’s operations manager, on Friday night, instructing him to pack his bags for South Africa and, afterwards, the UAE.”I almost fell off my chair when I got the call,” Clark told Cricinfo. “I hadn’t planned on it happening at all. I had just assumed my one-day international career was in the past, and while I was disappointed by that, I was just concentrating on the other forms of the game. This really came out of the blue, and I’m very excited about it. It’s a real chance for me to get back into the one-day team on a more regular basis.”Clark’s call-up came after Brett Geeves fractured his left foot during Australia’s 25-run defeat to South Africa in Cape Town on Thursday. He will arrive in South Africa on Sunday, and is likely to make his return to one-day international cricket in the fifth and final match at the Wanderers next Friday.Clark has not represented Australia at limited-overs level since September last year, and appeared to have slipped well back in the pecking order. But injuries to key fast bowling personnel has presented him with an opportunity to add to his 36-game resume, and gain valuable exposure to international cricket in his comeback from elbow surgery.Clark expected that comeback would be made through the county ranks; a move that prompted outrage among many within English cricket, given the likelihood of him playing a senior role in this year’s Ashes series. The veteran paceman is still amenable to the idea of playing with Kent after Australia’s one-day series against Pakistan in the UAE, but his original deal was due to end on May 31 so the new time frame would leave him with just a handful of matches.”I’m not quite sure what will happen with Kent,” Clark said. “I was prepared to fly there in the next week. I would still like to play there, but I have to be realistic. They might be looking for someone to play for the whole season. We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it after I get back from Dubai.”Paul Millman, the Kent chief executive, admitted that the county would have to start making new plans. “We will be looking at our options over the weekend,” he told Cricinfo. “Obviously we are delighted for Stuart and this is something you have to prepare for when you sign big players. We will let Stuart settle in South Africa and then be in contact.”

Security 'left us to be sitting ducks' claims Broad

Chris Broad landed back in Manchester and launched a stinging attack on the security in Lahore at the time of yesterday’s attack which left eight people dead, while expressing his concern that the incident sounds a ‘death knell’ for cricket in Pakistan.Broad, who was the ICC’s match referee for the Test between Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the city, accused the Pakistani authorities of leaving match officials as “sitting ducks” and claiming that players and officials arriving for the Test were not offered sufficient protection despite assurances given by the Pakistan board.”I’m angry with the Pakistani security forces,” Broad said. “We were promised high level security and in our hour of need that security vanished. There was not a sign of a policeman anywhere. They had clearly gone, left the scene and left us to be sitting ducks. I had an inkling before the Test match leg of the tour that something might happen. I certainly didn’t think this was going to happen.”Broad’s claims that he had flagged concerns about the security before the start of the series will raise issues. “I raised my concerns with the ICC before the tour started and they passed on those concerns to the Pakistan board. They assured me through e-mail that all security would be taken care of, presidential-style security. And clearly that didn’t happen.”When we were in the van we weren’t aware of what was going on outside. But after the incident when you watch the TV pictures you can clearly see the white van we were in, next to the ambulance in the middle of a roundabout, with terrorists shooting into our van and past our van and not a sign of a policeman anywhere.”Broad has been praised for throwing himself on top of fellow official Ahsan Raza as the vehicle they were travelling in came under fire. “I am not a hero,” he said. “Most of us were just waiting for a bullet to hit us.”Raza was shot in the back during the attack and rushed to Lahore’s Service hospital for surgery on a collapsed right lung and a damaged liver. Hospital staff said the operation was successful.Raza’s family members have said he is recovering fast and is likely to be released from the intensive care unit in the next two to three days.Broad went on to say that some of the security forces fled when the shooting started. “At some stage … someone opened the door of the van and an elite policeman threw himself inside and lay on top of me. That wasn’t particularly brave. When the shooting stopped, I shouted at him to drive us away but he said: ‘I don’t drive.'”For all Broad’s anger at the security concerns, he was just as dismayed at the impact that the attack could have on the future of cricket in the country. “They have a lot of very talented cricketers, and I feel sorry for the cricketers and for the cricket-mad public of Pakistan,” he said. “But this is a bit of a death knell for cricket in Pakistan and I feel sorry for those people. I can’t see it going on for the foreseeable future.”Ijaz Butt, the chairman [of the PCB] has come out and said that friends will come to Pakistan but I don’t think they have any friends in world cricket that will go to Pakistan after this has happened. Sri Lanka were a friendly country – they wanted to go, they wanted to support Pakistan. I don’t think they will be going back and certainly India, Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa won’t be keen.”Broad said the ICC would, in future, possibly have to take more direct responsibility for security arrangements rather than leaving matters to individual boards. “There are countries who have their own security experts,” he said. “I know England have Reg Dickason from Australia. Dickason didn’t think Pakistan was safe for anyone to go to. He was amazed the Sri Lanka tour went ahead. But he’s not advising Sri Lanka.”Maybe there’s something for the ICC to look at – that they themselves take the safety concerns into consideration and make the decisions.”
