N Srinivasan chaired the BCCI working committee meeting on February 8•PTI

Aditya Verma, the petitioner in the IPL corruption scandal, has demanded an apology from BCCI members for having allowed N Srinivasan to chair last week’s working committee meeting. Verma, in a legal notice issued to all the BCCI members, has demanded an assurance to not let Srinivasan chair next month’s AGM.”I call upon the working committee of BCCI to issue a statement forthwith that allowing Mr N Srinivasan to attend and chair the working committee meeting on 8th February 2015 was due to improper understanding of the scope of the Hon’ble Supreme Court order dated 22nd January 2015 and a bonafide mistake and that the working committee members will not allow Mr N Srinivasan to chair the AGM on 2nd March 2015 failing which my client will have no other option except to file contempt petition against all the working committee members of the BCCI and Mr N Srinivasan in the Hon’ble Supreme Court and all of you will be held liable for all costs and consequences arising therefrom,” stated NRR Arun Natarajan, Verma’s counsel.Interestingly, the BCCI working committee is not going to meet before the AGM, slated for March 2. It is understood that at the start of the working committee meeting, a BCCI legal advisor had explained that the Supreme Court order on January 22 had not made any reference to its earlier directives of keeping Srinivasan away from BCCI activities. Since none of the members present at the working committee objected to the lawyers’ explanation, Srinivasan was therefore considered eligible to not merely attend but also chair the meeting.Srinivasan, thus, chaired the working committee meeting for the first time since May 2013, when the IPL corruption scandal broke with the arrests of three cricketers and Gurunath Meiyappan, a team official and Srinivasan’s son-in-law. Once back in the BCCI saddle, Srinivasan is also set to chair the AGM.

Honours even after see-saw day

Steven Smith radiated certainty, adapting to the idiosyncrasies of the MCG’s drop-in pitch and India’s persevering bowlers to ensure his side ended the day on level terms with the visitors

‘Surprised Rahul – and not Raina – played for Rohit’

Smart Stats

223.50 Steven Smith’s batting average in this series by the end of the first day’s play at the MCG. He has scored 447 runs with two centuries and two half-centuries in five innings. This is the most he has scored in any Test series.

500 Runs Watson has scored at the MCG – the most he has scored at any venue. His eight innings here have produced one hundred and five fifties at an average of 83.33. The last time Watson got a fifty in Tests, which was nine innings ago, was also at the same venue against England last year.

251 Number of catches MS Dhoni has taken in Tests – the sixth highest by a wicketkeeper. He is one of seven wicketkeepers to take 250 or more catches in Tests. Mark Boucher leads this list with 532. Dhoni’s catch to dismiss Shaun Marsh in this innings was his 50th catch against Australia.

4 Number of times Umesh Yadav has dismissed David Warner in seven Test innings. However, Warner has managed to score rapidly off Yadav – 80 runs off 78 deliveries.

3 Number of consecutive fifties Chris Rogers has scored. He hasn’t been able convert them though, having been dismissed on 55 twice and on 57 in this innings. This was also Rogers’ third fifty-plus score in three innings at the MCG. He had scored 61 and 116 against England last year at the MCG.

27 Number of overs bowled by R Ashwin in the first day’s play – the second-most by any spinner on the first day of a Test at the MCG since 2009. Ashwin had sent in 26 overs on the first day the last time he played here too. Saeed Ajmal’s 32 overs in the 2009 Boxing Day Test are the most by a spinner on the first day’s play at this venue in this period.

“Just give me a start.”It can’t be known for sure whether or not Steven Smith has said this to his team yet, but on the evidence of the summer so far Australia’s new captain could be forgiven for uttering just such an instruction. Once again, Smith radiated certainty, adapting to the idiosyncrasies of the MCG’s drop-in pitch, India’s persevering bowlers and the occasion of Boxing Day, the biggest on the national cricket calendar. He did not walk to the wicket until the day’s 37th over due to important early innings from Chris Rogers and Shane Watson. Both men failed to go on from starts, and compounded the missed opportunity by falling in successive overs, but their work against the new ball was critical after David Warner fell to the ball angled across him as India belatedly abandoned their around the wicket brainstorm.Shaun Marsh helped Smith steady the innings and Joe Burns made a brief debut appearance, before Brad Haddin shrugged off another concerted short-pitched attack on his body – wearing one hefty blow on the back – to accompany Smith to the close. On a surface that has offered variable pace and bounce plus a modicum of movement for the pacemen, Australia’s tally is already useful, and they can rely on Smith to add to it on day two.Recalled in place of Varun Aaron, Mohammed Shami bowled neatly for the visitors, while R Ashwin delivered long and teasing spells from the Great Southern Stand end of the ground. He was rewarded only with the wicket of Watson, who followed a familiar pattern by starting fluently, losing momentum then losing his wicket to a somewhat ambitious stroke. The weather at the MCG was fair, and the pitch provided some early assistance for India’s seamers. Rogers was struck amidships by an Ishant Sharma delivery that cut back at him in the first over of the morning, and in the second Umesh Yadav found the perfect delivery from over the wicket, fast and seaming, to coax an outside edge from Warner.Shikhar Dhawan held a fine catch, and amid India’s celebrations they might have wondered why this was the first time in the series that Warner was asked to face a ball angled across him rather than moving in from around the wicket before he had found his bearings. A sore thumb cannot have helped either.Ishant, Shami and Umesh all delivered some vexing overs to follow-up, but found Rogers well attuned to the challenges of day-one batting at the MCG through his vast experience for Victoria. Watson was also fluent and alert, though fortunate that a few edges either did not carry or bisected MS Dhoni’s cordon.Together, they took shine from the new ball while also scoring with a good degree of freedom – Rogers strong down the ground and through point, while Watson prospered through the pull shot and also manoeuvred the ball through midwicket without quite so much apparent risk of lbw as spectators have become used to.Captain Steven Smith held his team’s innings together with an unbeaten 72•Getty Images

Dhawan went from 100% to 50% when he dropped Watson’s edge from Shami 10 minutes before the lunch interval, taking three bites at the ball before guiding it to ground. This reprieve, and a few other misfields, left Rogers and Watson to amble to lunch in happier circumstances than they might have imagined when Warner was dismissed.A boundary to Watson from the final ball of the second over after lunch seemed to herald more free-scoring, but it was in fact the last such scoring shot for more than 16 overs. Australian progress was stymied by Shami and, particularly, Ashwin, who used his height and variations in pace to good effect.Rogers went to his 50, as did Watson, but neither would go on. A Shami delivery of teasing line and in-between length found Rogers’ outside edge on 57, and in the following over Watson swept across a straight ball from Ashwin and was lbw.Understandably, Smith and Marsh took their time to avert further loss, but as tea loomed both had found something approaching a decent batting rhythm. Smith opened up the final session by sallying forth to deposit Ashwin into the long-off seats, but lost Marsh when he snicked Shami, firm-footed, through to Dhoni.Burns was greeted by an optimistic MCG ovation, and looked compact and sure on his way to 13. But Umesh cramped an attempted pull shot and found the thinnest of bottom edges to send Burns on his way, no doubt hoping to improve on a first innings all too brief. Haddin weathered the short ball without looking entirely comfortable – he often turned his head away – but a straight six off Ashwin signalled he was feeling more relaxed at the crease.Smith and Haddin negotiated the final few overs safely enough, and the day ended on the stroke of scheduled stumps. In its own way, this instance of timeliness was as notable as the rich vein Smith is currently mining.

Hampshire will try for a second time to have Shahid Afridi as an overseas player for the Friends Provident t20 after the deal fell through last season due to him captaining Pakistan.Afridi is expected to be available for the full t20 campaign which begins on June 1 when Hampshire, the defending champions, take on Somerset. He was due to be part of the 2010 tournament but captained against Australia before resigning following the first Test at Lord’s.”I was disappointed not to join Hampshire last season. It would have been fantastic to have been a part of the team that made history by winning the t20 trophy on home soil,” Afridi said. “Having played at The Rose Bowl for Pakistan last year I know that it is fast becoming one of the best places in the country to watch cricket of all levels. I hope very much to play a big part in the club’s success in 2011.”Afridi has a Twenty20 strike-rate of 159.84 and his bowling is also a highly valuable asset in the shortest format bringing him 98 wickets at 19.03 alongside an economy rate of 6.35″Shahid is a wonderful all-round cricketer and will be a real asset to our club over what should be an incredibly exciting summer at The Rose Bowl,” Giles White, the Hampshire manager, said. “This year we’ll see Test match cricket come to the county for the first time, more improvements made to our ground and, of course, Hampshire will be hoping to defend our t20 crown.”

Hamilton Masakadza set for first World Cup

Zimbabwe batsman Hamilton Masakadza has been picked in a World Cup squad for the first time despite having made his ODI debut in 2001

Firdose Moonda07-Jan-20151:53

Moonda: Zimbabwe squad a mix of experience and youth

Hamilton Masakadza will play in his first World Cup after 14 years as an international cricketer, having made his debut in 2001. He was included in Zimbabwe’s 15 for the first time, after missing out on the 2003, 2007 and 2011 events because of inexperience, injury and poor form.Zimbabwe also included Stuart Matsikenyeri, who last played for them in the 2012 World T20, Chamu Chibhabha, who has been overlooked since March 2013 and Prosper Utseya, even though he was banned from bowling his main discipline, offspin, because of an illegal action last year. There was also a recall for Sean Williams, who was not selected for the November tour to Bangladesh after a dispute with the selectors, but no space for the out-of-form Vusi Sibanda or left-arm seamer Brian Vitori. That gives Zimbabwe a well-balanced squad with experience at its foundation and youth to prop it up. Elton Chigumbura, who was in charge at the 2011 World Cup before being relieved of the role, will captain Zimbabwe again and head the experienced core. He will have Brendan Taylor, who is still Test captain, Masakadza and Utseya to form part of the think-tank.Utseya’s inclusion may strike as surprising because he will not be able to offer his main discipline – restrict opposition with offspin – but he has been working on other skills. He was recently on a tour to Uganda with Takashinga Cricket Club, coached by sacked Zimbabwe coach Stephen Mangongo, and resurrected his career as a medium-pacer. Peter Kirsten, who is in charge of Uganda and was at that series, said Utseya’s prospects of becoming a threatening medium-pacer are “promising” because of his ability to bowl cutters, which is what Zimbabwe hope he will do at the tournament. “He is our mystery spinner, bowling mediums and cutters and his experience will be vital for us,” Givemore Makoni, Zimbabwe’s selection convener said.Although Zimbabwe will miss Utseya’s spin, they have given themselves plenty of choice in that department. Legspinner Tafadzwa Kamungozi will be their attacking spinner while Sikandar Raza and Matsikenyeri will bowl offspin and Williams, left-arm spin. Given the conditions, their seam bowlers could prove more important to their chances of bowling teams out but Zimbabwe left out the man often referred to as their most threatening wicket-taker, Vitori. The left-armer has bounced in and out of the national squad as he battled injuries and interruptions in form and Zimbabwe decided his inconsistency was too risky for a major tournament. “The bowlers we have gone with have done better than him,” Makoni said when explaining why Tinashe Panyangara and Tendai Chatara will be asked to lead the attack. They will be joined by an additional quick in Tawanda Mupariwa, who has not played international cricket since 2009. Mupariwa was on Zimbabwe’s A tour to Bangladesh, where he took three wickets in two matches at 19.33.Other returning faces include Chibhabha, who made his case with 155 off 146 balls in a match between Zimbabwe A and Canada , which took place a day before the squad was announced. Matsikenyeri, who has spent time in South Africa before returning to try and resurrect his international career in Zimbabwe, also played in that match and scored 50 and Craig Ervine, is also involved in that series.Zimbabwe A are currently in the midst of a four-match series against Canada as part of their preparations for the World Cup. They will also hold a camp in Dubai with new coach Dav Whatmore, who said he was “happy with squad” and had “spoken to all those who missed out and assured them they are still part of the future.” The only member of the squad who will not be part of the preparations is Solomon Mire. He is playing in the Dhaka Premier League and will meet up with the team in New Zealand ahead of the tournament.Although Whatmore has not been given an official mandate for the World Cup, he has stated his goal is to get Zimbabwe out of the group stage and into the last eight. Whatmore’s deal with Zimbabwe will be renegotiated at the end of the tournament.Squad Elton Chigumbura (capt), Sikandar Raza, Regis Chakabva, Tendai Chatara, Chamu Chibhabha, Craig Ervine, Tafadzwa Kamungozi, Hamilton Masakadza, Stuart Matsikenyeri, Solomon Mire, Tawanda Mupariwa, Tinashe Panyangara, Brendan Taylor, Prosper Utseya, Sean Williams

Whitticase leaves Leicestershire

Phil Whitticase is to leave Leicestershire after 31 years at the club as player and then coach

Phil Whitticase is to leave Leicestershire after 31 years at the club as player and then coach.Whitticase has effectively been head coach since 2010 but, with the club unable to compete with the salary offers of other clubs, has been unable to stem the flow of players from the ground or reverse a grim decline in results. Leicestershire have not won a Championship match since 2012 and their limited-overs form has been little better. The news is no surprise. The club have already appointed a new head coach, the Australian Andrew McDonald and it had become apparent that no vacancy remained for Whitticase. His official role, director of cricket, was made redundant in October.Whitticase made his Leicestershire first team debut as a wicketkeeper in 1984 and played for 12 years. Upon retiring as a player, he qualified as a Level Four coach and remained with the club in a variety of roles. He first took charge of the first team in 2002, when he succeeded Jack Birkenshaw, before he was named as head coach and academy director under James Whitaker at the end of 2003 and then under Tim Boon from 2006.He enjoyed notable success as a coach. Not only was he the academy coach responsible, in part, for the development of Stuart Broad, James Taylor and Harry Gurney, but he was head coach the last time the club won a trophy, the domestic T20 tournament in 2011. He was also part of the coaching team when Leicestershire won the tournament in 2004 and 2006.Whitticase also worked with the likes of Josh Cobb, Shiv Thakor, Greg Smith and Nathan Buck but, with all four joining the exodus from Grace Road, the club have decided it is time for a change. Whether the new management team will fare any better without a substantial injection of resources remains to be seen.”We would like to thank Phil for his fantastic service to Leicestershire over the last 31 years,” the club’s chairman, Paul Haywood, said. Phil has been a loyal servant of the Club and worked tirelessly for us over the years at Grace Road. We wish him every success in the future.”
