Promoted Lancs already looking forwards

Lancashire may not have achieved promotion in the style they would have liked, but the hour-long wait to confirm their success completes a remarkable turnaround of fortunes. Relegated as reigning champions just a year ago, their return to Division One was confirmed after third-placed Essex were unable to secure victory against Kent at Canterbury.By the time news filtered through, there were precious few people left at Old Trafford to mark the event, after Lancashire’s final home match meandered to a draw on the final day. The players, of course, enjoyed their own celebration in the dressing room but the rest of the refurbished ground was empty other than a few members of the media writing up in the press box and the odd construction worker disassembling the temporary stands used for the Ashes Test and recent one-day international.Resuming the final morning trailing by 393 runs on 60 for 3, Leicestershire comfortably batted out the day and avoided a seventh successive defeat mainly thanks to a 69-run seventh-wicket stand between Ben Raine, who was celebrating his 22nd birthday, and Tom Wells. Raine top-scored with a career-best 72, while Wells also made his best first-class score of 43, and both sides shook hands on a draw after Leicestershire were dismissed for 329.It was a low-key end to Lancashire’s season at Old Trafford and, although they may finish the summer with silverware – Lancashire need only 12 points from their final two matches to secure the Division Two title – thoughts will inevitably turn to next year and whether the team can adapt to Division One cricket better than 12 months ago? They certainly have a bigger playing pool, with youngsters like Luis Reece and Andrea Agathangelou breaking through this summer to keep Steven Croft and Karl Brown, the two players at the crease when Lancashire claimed the championship at Taunton in 2011, out of the Championship side. They will also be able to call upon the experience of Ashwell Prince, the former South Africa Test batsman, who fulfils the final year of his two-year deal as a Kolpak player next summer.Reece’s emergence as an opening partner for Paul Horton has provided the foundation for much of Lancashire’s success this summer. In six innings opening together, they have recorded three century partnerships – in stark contrast to last summer when Lancashire had to wait until the final game of the summer for their first century opening stand – and should provide greater stability going into next season.Lancashire would also like to add Simon Katich, the 38-year-old former Australia batsman, to their squad for next season as an overseas player, after he contributed 1,097 Championship runs to their promotion push, including four hundreds and six half-centuries, at an average of 73.13. He will play no further part in their season as he is due to fly out to India this weekend to captain Perth Scorchers in the Champions League and discussions about next summer are expected to begin after the end of that tournament.Should Katich decide against another gruelling six months in county cricket, Lancashire have confirmed they would look to recruit another quality overseas batsman having already made the exciting signing of Kyle Jarvis, the 24-year-old former Zimbabwe Test bowler, on a three-year contract as a Kolpak player to strengthen their bowling resources. Jarvis claimed 30 wickets in eight Tests and has certainly looked the part during lunch-time bowling sessions at Old Trafford, bowling at a good pace and accuracy, but has yet to be tested in a first-team fixture.Jarvis’ pace will certainly add something to Lancashire’s attack, which has lacked a quick bowler for some years, and will ease the workload on Glen Chapple, their 39-year-old captain. They are well stocked in the spin department, with Simon Kerrigan having already proven himself in Division One. Stephen Parry, another left-arm spinner, should strengthen that department, having missed most of this season with a broken arm, while Arron Lilley, a 22-year-old offspinner, also made his Championship debut this summer.Do Lancashire have enough strength in depth to challenge for the title, as Yorkshire have done, in the season after going up? Much will depend on Lancashire’s recruitment policies during the winter. Their Roses rivals secures Liam Plunkett and Jack Brooks a year ago, which has helped them mount a title challenge.Certainly Katich is confident. “Having played Yorkshire last year [with Hampshire], they’ve brought in Plunkett and Brooks and, apart from that, their team is pretty similar,” he said. “The batting line-up is almost the same, apart from one or two young kids. They played some good cricket last year, Jason Gillespie is a good coach and they’ve probably built on that confidence and had another good year, so there’s no reason why that couldn’t also happen here.”

Cameron White was worn out and relieved at the end of his first Test. There had been no embarrassing two-bounce deliveries or savage treatment from the India batsmen, and he had proved to the team he would be of use during the remaining three matches.Despite the one wicket, White’s legspin exceeded Ricky Ponting’s expectations in Bangalore. He had zip, overspin and his control was surprisingly tight. However, White is an option for Australia rather than a long-term answer, as Ponting showed, using him as the sixth bowler in the second innings after Michael Clarke had a couple of spells with his part-time offerings. At the end of the match Ponting said Australia had missed a quality spinner on the final day. He was not downgrading White’s contribution, but being realistic. White is a batsman who bowls a bit. In his early days his characteristics – a blond, Victorian legspinner – earned him heavy comparisons with Shane Warne, but nobody believes he will develop into a world-class bowler. The team will be satisfied if he becomes a solid contributor.White will be happy if he can find a way to relax in the game’s most exacting arena. “I’m happy to get it out of the road and relieved the game is finished,” he said. “I felt under pressure the whole time and was pretty nervous the whole way through.”He said he was yet to feel that he belonged in the side and was appeared diffident over another opportunity in the second Test in Mohali from Friday. Tall, strong and multi-skilled, White is unsure when he speaks. He showed some belligerence with the bat in making 18 not out from 14 balls in the second innings and was composed with the ball, but before the match he was worried. What if his first ball bounced twice?”I guess they’re the things that make you nervous, thinking about the bad things, which is probably what you shouldn’t do,” he said. By the end of the game he had less reason to be fearful.White’s first wicket was the most fabulous batsman in the modern game. The worsening light was a distraction, but White tempted Sachin Tendulkar to drive and Clarke took the catch at cover.”I was happy with the way I bowled,” he said. “It could have been better, could have been worse. We’ll see how it goes.” The figures of 1 for 88 were an improvement on Warne’s opening effort of 1 for 150 against India 16 years ago, but White realises his career figures will be worse.I’m happy to get it out of the road and relieved the game is finished. I felt under pressure the whole time and was pretty nervous the whole way throughOver the past week he has learned to bowl fuller to the Indian batsmen, who are so strong off the back foot, and wants to increase his pace to cut down the time they have to play him. “I was trying to bowl a bit faster,” he said. “I looked at my speeds and they were in the high 80s, that’s probably as slow as I want to bowl on these pitches. I want to keep my pace around the 90 kph mark.”He expects India will go after him and will spend time with Ponting this week working out some more detailed plans to cope with the treatment. “I’m pretty sure they will probably do that the whole series, if I’m lucky enough to play,” he said. “They’re always going to try to be attacking – I’m the new spinner, and they’re trying to put pressure on me.”One area White is less concerned about is his batting. Australia’s untried middle order of Shane Watson, Brad Haddin and White chipped in during the opening Test and will need more useful stands over the remainder of the series.”I’ve always felt not as nervous, and a lot more comfortable and confident, in my batting,” he said. “I’ve never really had any dramas there.”I would have liked more runs in the first innings – the situation just got the better of me. I felt better in the second innings and it was nice to play with freedom. There was no second guessing, just going out and try to score at a run a ball.”

'Have never seen Dhawan bat like this before'

Two men who have watched Shikhar Dhawan closely over the years say that his positive frame of mind has translated into his prolific streak

Abhishek Purohit13-Aug-2013Ever since he cracked 187 off 174 against Australia on Test debut in March, Shikhar Dhawan has been the hot topic for the year 2013. And he keeps doing stuff that keeps making him a hotter topic. Man of the Series in the Champions Trophy. Another hundred in Zimbabwe. Now, a 248 in a one-dayer in South Africa. How is he doing what he is doing? How is it different from what he was doing all those years in domestic cricket? How is it different from what he did when he first played for India in 2010? Two men who have watched him closely over the years say that mostly, it is all in the head. Call it what you want – frame of mind, confidence, temperament, mental strength, self-belief; Dhawan’s positivity, along with improved shot selection, has translated into this extraordinary comeback, feel Vijay Dahiya and Lalchand Rajput.Dahiya, the former India and Delhi wicketkeeper, knows Dhawan from his days in junior cricket. He has played with him and later coached him. Was Dhawan always special and just ignored or has something critical fallen into place? Dahiya says he has never come across this avatar of Dhawan before.”I have not seen him batting before the way he is now, even in the nets,” Dahiya told ESPNcricinfo. “That kind of batting display is just phenomenal. There is no comparison. Last year, he had a pretty mediocre Ranji season, if you go by the standards he is setting right now. [Dhawan made 461 runs in 11 innings] which I think is alright for an opener in Indian first-class cricket when you end up playing seven-eight games. He had a fantastic Challenger Trophy [a domestic one-day tournament]. But what he is doing right now is something really special.”After a short, unsuccessful stint with the Indian one-day team, Dhawan was out for a couple of years before the sensational Test debut against Australia. Lalchand Rajput, the former India batsman and now India A coach, says that one knock has generated so much confidence, it continues to feed itself and extend Dhawan’s streak.”One good innings against Australia in the Test match … ” Rajput said. “Cricket is a game of confidence. If you are confident, you bat like a dream. Plus, playing the way he did in England in the Champions Trophy … He has gone from strength to strength and is batting at his peak now.”Dahiya concurs, saying not much has changed in terms of ability. “I think it is more mental,” Dahiya said. “I’ll say that skill-wise, he was the same. What I see now is that mentally he has become very strong. He is backing himself. He is extremely confident, which plays such an important role in any sport. He is playing all the shots against all bowlers in any conditions. That shows how confident he is.”Every time you see him batting, it looks like a display of cricket intelligence. A lot of players who make runs sometimes end up playing shots as if they are millionaires and don’t care about the value of their wickets. If you look at him, though, he is beautifully stretching his purple patch and making it count.”Also, I don’t think he is carrying any baggage. That is something you can’t see from the outside yet – the baggage of expectations. Every time he goes out there, he starts beautifully, understands what is required, and goes on from there. He takes his time to build and then flourishes.”Rajput had witnessed a very different Dhawan from close quarters just a year ago, when he was coach on the A side’s tour of the West Indies, where the opener averaged 7.50 in the unofficial Tests. Rajput believes Dhawan has used the time away from the national side to tighten his game.”It is not only mental, it is about selecting the right balls [to go after] as well,” Rajput said. “He has matured now and is never satisfied. He wants to do well every game. Look at his conversion rate. If he passes 50 or 60, he gets a hundred, in Champions Trophy, in Zimbabwe, now as well, big hundreds.”In the West Indies [in 2012], he used to play too many shots too early, and as an opener, that is taking too much risk. He always had the shots but not the selection, but now he knows what shot to play and what to not play. He has really developed control over his off-side game.”Dhawan’s form has lasted half a year now. How long before international bowlers find a chink somewhere? Dahiya does not think that moment, although inevitable, has arrived yet. “Everyone will always have shortcomings,” Dahiya said. “It is for the opposition to figure them out. Right now, he has played against almost all the top sides and it does not look like people have sorted something out. We saw in Zimbabwe in one of the games he got out to a short ball but in the next game he was scoring off them. Again, I will say his frame of mind is brilliant right now.”

India thrash Australia to take Under-19 title

India Under-19 crowned their unbeaten run in the Top End Series in Darwin by drubbing Australia Under-19 by eight wickets in a final that lasted just over 40 overs in total

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Jul-2013
ScorecardIndia Under-19 crowned their unbeaten run in the Top End Series in Darwin by drubbing Australia Under-19 by eight wickets in the final that lasted just over 40 overs in total. A combined bowling performance, led by Deepak Hooda, sent the hosts capitulating to 75 in just under 25 overs, before India chased it down with ease. That the Australia openers added 36, before losing all ten wickets for the addition of just 39 runs, only highlighted the batting meltdown. The openers Matthew Short and Damien Mortimer started positively, scoring at five an over before the left-arm seamer Chama Milind took the first wicket, getting Short caught by Hooda low at short midwicket. Milind struck again in his following over, when Ben McDermott flicked one straight to square leg. Hooda took the first of his three wickets when Mortimer spooned one to the captain Vijay Zol at mid-on.Hooda struck again four overs later, getting Jake Doran to edge to slip, leaving Australia at 4 for 58. Another wicket went down the following over when Sean Willis punched one straight to short cover. A brilliant catch at leg slip by Sarfaraz Khan gave Hooda his third wicket. India polished off the tail even before Australia could bat out half their overs. All five bowlers contributed, with Hooda the only bowler to bowl his full quota, finishing with 3 for 22.India lost an early wicket when Akhil Herwadkar was caught at fine leg in the second over. Zol scored 9 before he was caught at mid-on but Australia had nothing to celebrate after his dismissal as Ankush Bains and Sanju Samson guided India to the target with 207 balls to spare.
