Jaik Mickleburgh holds up defending champions

Durham’s first day in pursuit of a third successive County Championship title did not go precisely to plan as Jaik Mickleburgh’s courageous maiden first-class century built a commanding position for Essex at the Riverside

Durham’s first day in pursuit of a third successive County Championship title did not go precisely to plan as Jaik Mickleburgh’s courageous maiden first-class century built a commanding position for Essex at the Riverside.Shorn of their quickest bowler Steve Harmison due to a back injury, Durham’s steadier seamers acquitted themselves well in reducing Essex to 102 for 4 in ideal bowling conditions, claiming the prize scalp of Alastair Cook in the process. But the champions lost their way alarmingly from mid-afternoon, as 20-year-old Mickleburgh (103 not out) and James Foster (66no) joined in an unbroken 161-run stand in 54 overs.Durham captain Will Smith won the toss and unsurprisingly asked the visitors to bat in gloomy conditions that could scarcely have been further removed from their pink-ball trial in Abu Dhabi earlier this month. The traditional red Dukes certainly provided a stern challenge for Cook, who was only granted ECB permission to play in this match yesterday due to a shortage of available Essex batsmen. In his first innings since leading England to a series whitewash in Bangladesh, the left-hander was forced to withstand a probing 11-over opening spell of subtle in-swing from Callum Thorp. Cook’s opening partner Billy Godleman was the first to succumb 10 balls into the day, struck on his front pad by a Thorp delivery going across him.The runs dried up, and the second-wicket pair could not find a boundary for the next 12 overs, until John Maunders broke the shackles with a clipped four off his hips in the 16th. But the stocky left-hander survived only three more deliveries before going lbw to Thorp in almost identical fashion to Godleman.Mickleburgh almost followed him back in swift order, but he narrowly escaped being run out when sent back to the non-striker’s end by Cook. Cook battled through consecutive near misses by Mark Davies, playing loosely away from his body before edging fractionally short of Michael Di Venuto at first slip. The arrival of Durham’s change bowlers briefly allowed Cook to free his arms, producing two sweet drives off Liam Plunkett to take his score to 37 at lunch. Just as Mickleburgh began to contribute to a burgeoning partnership of 60, Cook nicked a Claydon outswinger to second slip Di Venuto, who held an excellent catch low down.Mark Pettini lasted only 20 balls before handing Thorp a third wicket by edging a loose drive to Di Venuto. With Cook gone, Essex could conceivably have folded, but they were aided by a distinctly off-colour display from Plunkett midway through the afternoon.Plunkett strayed to leg far too often, allowing Foster to whip him for an emphatic six into the members’ stand. Mickleburgh visually grew in confidence in Foster’s company, and moved to a battling fifty from 131 balls just prior to tea, which Essex took at a healthier 167 for 4.Foster returned after the resumption with a typically bold approach, playing two sumptuous straight drives off Thorp and several authoritative lofted strokes off Ian Blackwell’s left-arm spin. Plunkett just fell short in his attempt to pull off a stunning catch in the gully, and salt was rubbed into Durham’s wounds when Foster flashed through a vacant slip to bring up the century partnership. But the former England wicketkeeper’s half-century, which arrived soon after, was richly deserved in the circumstances. Mickleburgh required attention from the physio in the 85th over, but he picked himself up to see off the second new ball and gradually work his way to his deserved hundred, which spanned 222 balls.Foster had no intention of slowing down, hooking a Ben Stokes half-tracker for six three overs before stumps. His innings lasted 174 balls, featuring seven fours and a six.

Ismael outlines WBA transfer plans

West Bromwich Albion manager Valerien Ismael has outlined his plans for the remainder of the transfer window, admitting that the priority is now outgoing whilst not ruling out the possibility of new faces coming in.

What’s the story?

When speaking to the media, the Albion manager said: “Everything is on outgoings.

“It could be the typical case, that it’s a last-minute transfer, that it’s in the last few minutes that something happens. We will see. I think maybe next week things will take more speed.

“But [we] are working behind the scenes to make sure first we can get some outgoings before we can get some incoming.”The Baggies managed to make their priority signing on the first day of the window as striker Daryl Dike joined from MLS outfit Orlando City on a permanent basis, having been on loan at Barnsley under the Frenchman for the second half of last season. With just over a week left until the transfer window closes, the Championship promotion chasers will be looking to offload some players, with the early termination of striker Jordan Hugill’s loan deal from Norwich City a priority. However, with game time set to also be limited back at Carrow Road, it is understood that the Canaries want to find the 29-year-old a new club to join on loan before recalling with Hull City and Millwall interested.Should the next week go smoothly, there may also be enough time to bring in another new player.West Brom fans will be relievedWith aspirations of an instant return to the Premier League taking a hit in recent weeks, West Brom need to get their season back on track by offloading dead wood and potentially adding another player or two to their ranks who can make an impact. Consequently, fans should be relieved with Ismael’s plans to do exactly that.Prior to Saturday’s 3-0 home win over Peterborough United, the West Midlands club had gone on a run of just two wins in ten Championship outings which saw them slip out of the automatic promotion places.Sat in fifth and four points off of second place Bournemouth, promotion is still very much a realistic target for this campaign, however, the coming weeks will make a major impact, hence why tinkering within the squad will be vital.Albion have been excellent defensively this term, in fact, they remain the second tier’s best defenders having conceded a league-low of 20 goals; it’s at the other end where they’ve struggled.Ismael’s side have only managed 34 goals in 27 games, with only one other side in the top eight (Middlesbrough) having scored fewer. To put it into perspective, top of the league Fulham have scored over double the Baggies’ tally with 73.It is unknown how West Brom’s squad will look on 1 February but what is for sure is that if a new face is to come through the door at The Hawthorns, one will have to leave beforehand to make it possible. In other news: Sky Sports pundit drops worrying WBA January claim, it would be a “huge blow” for Ismael

Sunderland loan Tottenham ace Clarke

Many Sunderland fans have been left gushing over transfer news involving Jack Clarke.

As per the club’s official website, the winger has now joined from Tottenham Hotspur on loan for the rest of the season.

At 21 years of age, Clarke has already shown so much promise throughout his career, starting off at Leeds United, where he won the club’s Young Player of the Year award after bagging two goals and two assists in their 2018/19 Championship season.

He has also played on loan for Stoke City and QPR as well as parent club Spurs, and he racked up six caps for England at under-20 level (Transfermarkt), further showing his credentials at a young age.

Nonetheless, he is a signing which has prompted glee among many of the Stadium of Light faithful.

Sunderland fans on Clarke transfer news

These Sunderland supporters were ecstatic as the transfer news was dropped on Twitter, with a couple claiming that they were ‘buzzing’, while another went as far as to call it an ‘unreal’ signing:

“Another top quality attacking signing. Career has stagnated, but this is chance to remind everyone of his ability and kickstart his career and prove a point in a league lower than his level. A striker, LB and physical CM and that is the perfect window for me.”

– A expectativa é a melhor possível. Ano passado fiz a transição do juniores, subi no meio do ano.

Tê-los do meu lado aumenta minha motivação. Tento sempre fazer o que eles me dizem, sei que são os melhores conselhos. São extraordinários dentro de campo e têm trajetórias que eu admiro e respeito muito – comentou o jovem.

Trott ton overcomes depleted Durham

David Payne served up the best-ever figures by a Gloucestershire bowler inLimited-overs cricket but still finished on the losing side in their CB40 match with Essex at Chelmsford

09-May-2010Warwickshire 201 for 3 beat Durham 200 for 9 by seven wickets
ScorecardA clinical century by Jonathan Trott maintained Warwickshire’s 100% CB40 record as they inflicted Durham’s first defeat of the season by sevenwickets at Edgbaston.Opener Phil Mustard propped up Durham’s total of 200 for 9 but theirinjury-hit attack – even with Steve Harmison back in the line-up – did not have the firepower to make it a true contest.Trott’s 103 from 98 balls – his highest score since his Test debut centuryagainst Australia last August – set up a Warwickshire victory with five overs to spare after a partnership of 117 with Jim Troughton. With seven bowlers unavailable and Liam Plunkett playing only as a batsman,Durham recalled Harmison for the first time since he took four wickets in 20 overs in the champion county’s fixture with the MCC in Abu Dhabi in March.A trapped nerve in his back forced him to miss the first month of the season and in a low-key comeback he bowled six overs, split into three spells, for 27 runs.England batsman Ian Bell pulled a short ball from Ben Harmison straight to deep square leg as the home side lost two wickets in reaching 59 by the 11th over. But Trott, with 13 fours, headed off any further difficulties and Warwickshire were only 25 short of their target when he was run out by Chris Rushworth’s direct throw from mid-off. Troughton remained unbeaten with 66 from 76 balls. That Durham even reached 200 was largely due to Mustard. For the second time in three completed matches in the competition, the 27-year-old wicketkeeper was his county’s top scorer.Having made 74 in the opening victory over Hampshire at the Riverside, hebatted through to the 28th over here, racking up 61 from 73 balls until he was fifth out at 141.A low-key Durham innings included only 12 fours – five of these to Mustard – and two sixes, the first by Ian Blackwell in the second over and the other from Steve Harmison from the fourth ball he faced.Harmison’s towering straight drive marginally dented Darren Maddy’s figures, but the former Leicestershire allrounder, now approaching his 36th birthday, still finished with 3 for 25, his best one-day return for Warwickshire.Maddy gave little away as his nagging wicket-to-wicket line pressured thebatsmen into mistakes. Mustard was leg-before, whipping across the line, and the medium-pacer was in a second spell when he bowled Gareth Breese and Plunkett in successive overs.Boyd Rankin, back from World Twenty20 action with Ireland, and Keith Barkerboth took two wickets in their first county appearances of the season and wrist spinner Imran Tahir dismissed Will Smith and Ben Stokes in his first 10 deliveries.

Michael Yardy helps Sussex start with victory

Sussex made a successful start to their defence of the Twenty20 Cup with a convincing 52-run win over Somerset in front of a near full-house 7,000 crowd at Hove

Sussex made a successful start to their defence of the Twenty20 Cup with a convincing 52-run win over Somerset in front of a near full-house 7,000 crowd at Hove. Somerset, pre-season favourites to win the tournament, appeared to be in control when they restricted Sussex to 155 for 7, but the home side bowled and fielded superbly to dismiss Somerset for 103 in 17.1 overs.Craig Kieswetter and Marcus Trescothick gave them a decent platform with a stand of 39 but after Trescothick failed to pick James Kirtley’s slower ball and was caught at mid off, Somerset lost four top-order wickets for 14 runs in four overs.Sussex skipper Mike Yardy, reprising the role he played so effectively in England’s World Cup triumph, picked up Nick Compton and James Hildreth as both missed attempted sweeps while Ed Joyce pulled off an excellent catch on the third man boundary to intercept Zander de Bruyn’s sliced drive.Opener Kieswetter and Jos Buttler revived Somerset with a fifth-wicket stand of 33 in four overs but when Buttler was brilliantly run out from backward point by Joyce the Somerset reply went into a steep decline with their last six wickets falling for just 13 runs in 29 balls.Kirtley picked up three for three in seven balls including Kieswetter, whose innings of 47 from 41 balls was ended by a superb running catch on the cover boundary by substitute fielder Ragheb Aga.Earlier, Luke Wright and Murray Goodwin had given Sussex’s innings the perfect platform with a stand of 58 in six overs for the first wicket. Wright hit 36 of his 39 runs from 19 balls in boundaries but Sussex lost wickets regularly after he sliced a drive to backward point.Goodwin hit a run-a-ball 30 but accurate bowling from left-arm spinner Murali Kartik and De Bruyn stifled Sussex’s momentum. Dwayne Smith, who scored 338 runs in last season’s competition, was leg before on the walk first ball to Kartik and none of the Sussex middle order seemed to get to grips with a two-paced pitch. But they were given some vital momentum at the end by Yasir Arafat, who later picked up two for nine from three overs, and wicketkeeper Andy Hodd who added 35 in the last three overs to give them something to defend.
