Wolves target Botman wanted by Tottenham

Wolves transfer target Sven Botman is wanted by Tottenham in the summer transfer window, according to a fresh update which emerged on Thursday evening.

The Lowdown: Wolves linked with Botman move

Wanderers ended up not making any defensive additions in January but one player they were linked with signing was Lille centre-back Botman, as journalist Luke Hatfield claimed Scott Sellars and co ‘will still be keen’ after their summer interest.

That comes following intense interest in summer 2021, so much so the player himself even commented on the links to Molineux.

The 22-year-old ended up staying put at Lille in both windows, however, and he has continued to shine for the reigning Ligue 1 champions, making 15 league starts this season.

Botman isn’t without other suitors though – newly rich Newcastle were heavily linked too – and now another club has jumped in the mix for the summer.

The Latest: Spurs want summer transfer

According to The Telegraph, Spurs are eyeing up a summer transfer for the Dutchman, whose current Lille deal expires at the end of the 2024/25 season.

Antonio Conte sees him as someone who could strengthen his side’s defence moving forward and will pursue a move for him.

The Verdict: Potential blow for Wanderers

The idea of Botman joining Spurs over them is undoubtedly a blow for Bruno Lage, even though he isn’t short of defensive quality currently, with Max Kilman, Conor Coady and Romain Saiss so impressive this season.

The young centre-back has been a colossal presence for Lille in recent times, averaging 3.2 aerial duel wins per game in the league last season and a whopping 4.9 clearances per match this time around. He has been hailed as ‘amazing‘ by AC Milan director Frederic Massara.

At 22, he could be a long-term signing for Wolves, too, which is an added bonus, especially with Coady approaching 30 and Saiss already reaching that milestone.

Tottenham don’t have much more to offer on the pitch than Wolves at the moment, but their willingness to spend big on the right players – their transfer record is over £50m and they have splashed over £20m on 15 other occasions – may prove a thorn in Wolves’ side.

Cricket Australia officials are still lobbying to gain enough support to install John Howard as the ICC’s vice-president in Singapore over the next two days. The appointment of Howard, the former Australia prime minister, is supposed to be a formality but it has become increasingly uncertain following complaints raised by Zimbabwe and South Africa.Howard’s vice-presidency will be a key issue at the ICC’s executive board meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday, which occurs before the elevation of India’s Sharad Pawar to the top job. James Sutherland, Cricket Australia’s chief executive, and the chairman Jack Clarke are in Singapore for various talks this week and are attempting to secure the seven votes required for Howard to get the deputy’s role. “There are still discussions taking place,” a Cricket Australia spokesman said on Monday. In an effort to improve relations with Zimbabwe, Howard, who as prime minister was critical of Robert Mugabe’s regime, met with senior cricket officials there last week. A similar approach to speak with South African administrators was rejected while Howard was in the country for the football World Cup.Despite the claims of Zimbabwe Cricket’s managing director Ozias Bvute that reports of its influence were “maliciously incorrect”, its senior officials raised the initial protest through its South African counterparts outside ICC meetings in Dubai in April. The issue has continued to simmer and there are concerns India will side with the African countries in the executive meeting to block the appointment.David Morgan, the out-going ICC president, supports the Howard nomination, which was proposed by Australia and New Zealand following a drawn-out selection process. Under the ICC’s guidelines Howard should become president in 2012, replacing Pawar, the Indian politician.

Rangers have pulled masterstroke with gem

Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst has enjoy a largely successful return to Ibrox since arriving as manager after playing for the club earlier in his career.

He has only lost one match in all competitions since taking over from Steven Gerrard and has guided the Gers into the knockout stages of the Europa League, where they will face Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund later this month.

The head coach made a few additions to the squad in the January transfer window to stamp his own mark on the team, but a decision he made in his first game may be the best one he has taken so far.

Masterstroke

Van Bronckhorst opted to select Calvin Bassey at centre-back in his first match – against Sparta Prague at Ibrox – and he has pulled off a masterstroke with the former Leicester enforcer in recent months.

At the time of the Dutchman’s arrival as Gers boss, Bassey was valued at £360k by Transfermarkt. This was down from the £450k at which he was rated in January 2021 under Steven Gerrard, suggesting that the ex-Feyenoord coach picked him up at a low point in his Gers career.

He was behind Borna Barisic at left-back and also watching on as Leon Balogun and Connor Goldson started in the middle, but Van Bronckhorst pulled off a masterstroke by opting to go with him as a central defender after a knock for Balogun opened up a spot at the back.

Instead of going with natural centre-back Jack Simpson or looking to recall Nikola Katic in January, the head coach placed his faith in Bassey.

Shortly after joining the club, Van Bronckhorst heaped praise on the way the Nigerian adapted to his new position, saying: “I’ve been really impressed with Calvin [Bassey] as he does not have a lot of experience in the central positions. He has a lot of physical strength and we will help him to develop and grow. He is very open to learning and is full of energy.

“I think he has the physical ability to play there and we’re helping him a lot in that position when he has to pass when he has to dribble, the position he has to take when the other defenders got the ball.”

Leicester City’s under-23 manager Steven Beaglehole previously dubbed Bassey “phenomenal” and that is what the defender has been for the most part since the Dutchman came in. Rangers kept seven clean sheets in nine games after Van Bronckhorst picked Bassey at centre-back alongside Goldson, with the 22-year-old achieving a SofaScore rating of 7.0 or higher in seven of those matches.

At the time of writing (11/02/22), Transfermarkt value him at £900k. This is a whopping 150% increase within the space of around six months, showing that he has turned his Gers career around and is now on an upwards trajectory since his switch to centre-back. Therefore, his development has been a masterstroke from his manager, and hopefully he will continue to blossom.

Hutton on Aaron Ramsey’s Rangers future

Rangers will attempt to pull off an ‘incredible deal’ for Aaron Ramsey this summer, Alan Hutton has claimed.

The former Gers and Scotland left-back was speaking to Football Insider.

The lowdown

Ramsey is on loan from Juventus until the end of the 2021/22 season, although the loan agreement between Rangers and the Bianconeri is not believed to include an option to buy.

However, transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has said that Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side will have ‘priority’ over other suitors when it comes to the end of the season.

Ramsey has made two substitute appearances in the Premiership so far and started for the first time against Annan Athletic in the Scottish Cup on Saturday.

The latest

BBC Radio 5 Live pundit Hutton thinks that Rangers will be harbouring ambitions of landing Ramsey long-term but stressed that the possibility of a permanent deal will come down to wage demands and the player’s ambitions.

The ex-Gers defender told Football Insider: “If he sets the league alight and has an incredible rest of the season, then maybe he’ll look to move on somewhere else. Rangers will be looking for an incredible deal, but it’s all going to come down to figures.

“What he’s on now is way outside the ballpark, so unless there’s a deal to be done – you really can’t see it happening in the summer. We’ll have to wait and see.”

The verdict

Hutton is right to be sceptical. According to David Ornstein, Ramsey earns a whopping £400,000 per week at Juventus, and a loan move was only viable because the Serie A club agreed to foot a portion of that salary.

Given that Rangers’ top earner at present (Alfredo Morelos) earns only £33,000 per week, you’d think that Ramsey would need to agree a massive pay cut before any permanent move becomes realistic.

Also, as Danny Mills has suggested, it’s possible that the 31-year-old views his move to Ibrox as a means of building up his fitness before looking to secure a Premier League return in the summer.

In other news, Fabrizio Romano also rated Rangers’ chances of a permanent deal for Amad Diallo

Andrew's onslaught gives Worcestershire victory

Gareth Andrew smashed 27 off 11 balls to give Worcestershire their first away win in the Friends Provident t20 and send Leicestershire crashing to their sixth consecutive home defeat

07-Jul-2010
ScorecardGareth Andrew smashed 27 off 11 balls to give Worcestershire Royals their first away win in the Friends Provident t20 and send Leicestershire Foxes crashing to their sixth consecutive home defeat at Grace Road.Chasing a victory target of 143, the Royals looked to have blown their chances when they lost quick wickets and slipped to 112 for 7 with three overs to go. But Andrew struck four boundaries plus a huge six off Leicestershire captain Matthew Hoggard to turn things round and the Royals won by three wickets with six balls to spare.Victory lifted them off the bottom of the North group table and dealt a major blow to the Foxes’ hopes of reaching the quarter-finals. Worcestershire had made a solid start to their chase with opener Phil Jaques and Sanath Jayasuriya putting on 41 in six overs with little trouble.Jayasuriya struck the first six of the match with a fine shot off Hoggard but Jaques holed out to deep midwicket having hit five boundaries in his 27-ball innings. But the Royals’ reply began to stutter as spinners Brad Hodge and Claude Henderson suddenly curtailed the run rate.Henderson claimed the wicket of Jayasuriya and Hodge put the Foxes in control with a three-wicket spell in his four overs that cost 26 runs -14 of them coming off his final six deliveries. But Andrew strode in to snatch the game from the home side in dramatic fashion to give the Royals a well deserved success.Top scorer for the Foxes was Wayne White with 26 off 22 balls and but for 21 extras the home side’s total would have been considerably lower. Hodge and Jacques du Toit put on 48 in the first six overs but the departure of Hodge triggered a collapse that saw five wickets tumble for 32 runs in five overs.Du Toit was dismissed with a brilliant piece of work on the square leg boundary by Alexei Kervezee who knocked the ball up to prevent a six and then skilfully flicked it into the hands of Jaques to complete the catch. Offspinner Moeen Ali picked up the wickets of James Benning, Josh Cobb and White to finish with three for 19 and the Foxes’ total of 142 for 8 always looked short of being a competitive target.During the game Leicestershire’s members were asked to sign a petition for a special general meeting following the shock resignation last week of chief executive David Smith.
