Jonathan Trott has earned a one-day international recall as a replacement for the injured Kevin Pietersen while Graeme Swann has been rested, allowing James Tredwell to come into the squad for the three-match ODI series against Bangladesh that begins July 8.Trott was left out of England’s one-day squad after their tour to South Africa last year but has been in good limited-overs form for Warwickshire this season and scored a century in England Lions’ victory against West Indies A last month. His chance comes because Pietersen suffered a quad strain during the 42-run defeat to Australia in the final ODI at Lord’s and will now undergo a rehabilitation period. National selector Geoff Miller feels the though the injury of no great concern England are erring on the side of caution.”I think it is a minor injury,” said Miller. “But we are obviously wary, because there is a lot of cricket coming up over the rest of the summer and the winter as well. I am sure he will be all right [for the forthcoming npower Test series against Pakistan] but can’t say that categorically at this stage. I think it is a slight one as opposed to a major one. We are just being cautious. I think he will be all right in the very near future.”Though the injury provides a welcome return for Trott, who was once inked in in all formats for England, he is likely to start the series on the sidelines with Ian Bell slotting into Pietersen’s No. 3 spot.Tredwell’s inclusion comes because Swann, who has been an ever-present in all formats for England over the past 12 months, has been given a period out to rest. He will, however, be free to play Championship cricket for Nottinghamshire.”Graeme Swann has been involved in all forms of the game for some time now and this forthcoming period has been identified as the best opportunity to ensure Graeme has a suitable break ahead of a demanding schedule this summer and during the winter,” said Miller.Tredwell made his Test and ODI debut against Bangladesh in March but was leap-frogged by Michael Yardy into the side against Australia, with the view that he and Swann were too similar in styles.”James Tredwell and Jonathan Trott have previously been involved with the England One-Day set up and will be excellent additions to the full England squad from the England Lions. Both have been in good form for the Lions and will relish the opportunity to make their mark in limited overs at the top level.”The only other change from the squad selected for the series against Australia is Ajmal Shahzad’s inclusion ahead of Ryan Sidebottom. Shahzad impressed with pace and reverse-swing on Test debut against Bangladesh last month and has also been England Lions’ best fast bowler in the recent games against West Indies A and India A. The England selectors may view this as another opportunity to give him full international experience, having already established Sidebottom’s credentials.England squad Andrew Strauss (capt), Craig Kieswetter, Ian Bell, Paul Collingwood, Eoin Morgan, Michael Yardy, Luke Wright, Tim Bresnan, James Tredwell, Stuart Broad, James Anderson, Ajmal Shahzad, Jonathan Trott.

Everton: Two clubs battling for Cenk Tosun

Everton’s Cenk Tosun is the subject of a ‘transfer war’ between Super Lig outfit Besiktas and Saudi Arabian team Al-Hilal, according to Turkish news outlet Takvim.

The lowdown

It was Besiktas who sold the Turkey striker to Everton for £27m back in January 2018. He signed a four-and-a-half-year contract upon his arrival at Goodison Park, and that deal is due to expire this summer, leaving him free to negotiate pre-contract terms with foreign clubs.

Tosun, who was out until November after suffering a patella rupture, has played a mere 11 minutes of football for the Toffees this season. He did feature in the matchday squad last weekend against Leeds United, but Frank Lampard left him on the bench.

The latest

As per Takvim, Al-Hilal have reportedly offered Tosun a two-year contract worth €5m (£4.2m) per year, which comes to approximately £80,500 per week. That would be a healthy 25% increase on the £60,000-a- week he is currently earning at Everton.

However, Besitkas, are also determined to bring him back and will ‘use all their trump cards’ in a bid to do so.

Tosun is expected to make a decision on his next destination in June, although it seems that staying at Everton is out of the question.

The verdict

It’s hard to dress up the signing of Tosun as anything other than a comprehensive failure.

The 30-year-old ranks among Everton’s top 20 most expensive signings but he has only made 61 appearances in four years, contributing a mere 11 goals.

Sam Allardyce, the Blues’ manager at the time, confidently declared that Tosun was the ‘best in Europe’ in his price bracket. Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish also dubbed him an ‘excellent’ player after he sealed a loan move to Selhurst Park in 2020, but it simply hasn’t worked out for the striker in England.

Celtic: Noa Lang is one that got away

Celtic laid dormant like a small church mouse last season as the Hoops crumbled, fell and ultimately watched their stronghold over Scottish football evaporate into thin air.

It was a disastrous campaign for the Bhoys as they failed to win a single trophy and saw the back of their former manager at Parkhead in Neil Lennon.

Yet, enter Ange Postecoglou, an Australian-Greek coach who has overseen a quite colossal rebuilding project at Parkhead and put Celtic firmly back at the top of the Premiership.

He has overseen a Scottish League Cup triumph and few would now bet against Celtic winning the title as they sit six points ahead of fierce rivals, Rangers.

A number of his signings have been superb with the likes of Liel Abada, Kyogo Furuhashi, Giorgos Giakoumakis and Jota finding themselves involved in a mammoth 79 goals between them this term.

Yet, there is uncertainty over the future of Jota who Celtic could sign for £6.5m due to an agreement in his loan contract from Benfica.

Should they fail to agree a deal they may well have nightmares over a move that Lennon didn’t seal back in the summer of 2020.

That happens to be one for Noa Lang, a flying winger whose stock is now rising all the time.

Reports nearly two years ago now suggested the Hoops were fighting it out to bring the Netherlands international to Glasgow. Ultimately, a move didn’t happen and he eventually ended up joining Club Brugge from Dutch giants, Ajax, last summer.

His form since has been imperious with the attacker now dubbed a “phenomenon” by journalist Peter Vandenbempt, scoring nine goals and racking up 13 assists for the Belgian side.

That kind of form has seen his value rise exponentially, so much so that Arsenal are eyeing up a blockbuster £33m move for him.

Hindsight is a thing of beauty but it’s evident that Celtic missed the target when putting Lang in their crosshairs.

A failure to conclude a deal has not only seen them miss out on a wonderfully gifted footballer but also a pretty hefty payday too.

You can certainly file the 22-year-old under one who got away.

AND in other news, Sources: Deal now agreed for potential “£20m-plus” talent, it’s bad news for Celtic…

James Kirtley announces retirement

James Kirtley, the former England fast bowler and Sussex veteran, has announced that he will retire from first-class cricket at the end of the summer

James Kirtley, the former England fast bowler and Sussex veteran, has announced that he will retire from first-class cricket at the end of the summer, bringing to an end a 15-year career in which he claimed 614 first-class wickets at 27.04, 19 of them for England in a four-match stint in 2003.With a wholehearted charge to the crease and an enviable ability to swing the ball late and at pace, Kirtley rarely gave less than his best in any form of the game, and in 2007 his abilities in Twenty20 cricket were recognised when England came calling for one final time for the inaugural World Twenty20 in South Africa that September. However, throughout his career, Kirtley was forced to contend with whispers about the legality of an undeniably jerky bowling action. Despite being cleared by an eight-man ECB panel prior to his ODI debut in Harare in October 2001, the doubts were once again raised by the ICC match referee for that series, Colonel Naushad Ali, and in 2005 he was twice reported mid-match, and sent for remedial work at the end of the season. That Kirtley overcame the doubters and thrived regardless was a tribute to the spirit with which he played his cricket. He first shot to prominence in the winter of 1996-97 when, as a young overseas professional for the Zimbabwe province, Mashonaland, he claimed seven wickets in the match, including first-innings figures of 5 for 53 to set Mike Atherton’s England up for an embarrassing eight-wicket defeat, the starting point for one of the most memorably ignominious tours of the decade. His Test debut, when it finally came in the summer of 2003, was no less eye-catching. Facing South Africa on a broken wicket at Trent Bridge, he squared the series for England with his Test-best figures of 6 for 34, his waspish accuracy proving too much for South Africa as they were bundled out for 131 chasing 202 for victory.Kirtley let no-one down on the subsequent tour of Sri Lanka in December 2003, which he joined as an injury replacement for James Anderson and in which he played the final two Tests at the expense of Matthew Hoggard. Hoggard, however, returned for the subsequent tour of West Indies, and thrived as the team’s “shop-floor steward”, keeping things tight for the more venomous trio of Steve Harmison, Simon Jones and Andrew Flintoff, and so forming the quartet that would go on to win the 2005 Ashes. But as Hoggard himself admitted in his subsequent autobiography, that fourth-seamer role could so easily have gone to Kirtley instead.Instead, Kirtley returned to Hove where he helped Sussex win back-to-back Championship titles in 2006 and 2007, while also chipping in with his personal highlight, a Man-of-the-Match performance in the 2006 C&G final at Lord’s, when his 5 for 27 secured a gripping 15-run win over Lancashire in a low-scoring final.”The dedication and sacrifices James Kirtley has made for his career have been a constant source of inspiration and an example to any player who has been fortunate enough to have played alongside him,” said Sussex’s cricket manager, Mark Robinson. “For many years he has led both our one-day and four-day attack and will go down as one of the all-time greats of Sussex cricket.””Playing for Sussex CCC has been an amazing 16 years of my life and to be a part of such a successful team has been an absolute privilege,” said Kirtley. “Whilst calling it a day has been very difficult I will look back on this chapter with many happy memories and I look forward to the challenges ahead.”I’d like to thank all the supporters, sponsors, the club and all the players for their help and support throughout my career. Sussex CCC is truly a very special place. I hope it continues to be successful both on and off the pitch for many more years.”

Patel keeps Nottinghamshire in the hunt

Champions-elect Nottinghamshire will face an intriguing final day at Chester-le-Street, where Durham lead by 308 with five wickets standing

02-Sep-2010
Scorecard
Champions-elect Nottinghamshire will face an intriguing final day at Chester-le-Street, where Durham lead by 308 with five wickets standing. The leaders were wilting badly in the afternoon sunshine, when Gordon Muchall and Dale Benkenstein were putting on 144 in 30 overs. But Samit Patel halted the spree by taking three wickets and Durham closed on 279 for 5 in their second innings. Unless they are bowled out they will face a tricky decision over when to declare on a pitch still full of runs.Following his unbeaten 140 at Basingstoke four weeks ago, Muchall made his second century since being recalled to the side in mid-season. He throttled back after racing to 50 off 52 balls, helped by an injury to Darren Pattinson – who came into the match as the replacement for RyanSidebottom, who had to link up with the England Twenty20 squad.Pattinson limped off after his first ball 10 minutes before lunch. His ankle appeared to give way in his delivery stride and when he tried to bowl in mid-afternoon he conceded 26 runs in two overs and retired again. Muchall pulled and cut three fours in Pattinson’s first four balls then cutPaul Franks for his eighth boundary to reach 50.His century came off 129 balls but he fell for 111 when thrusting his pad well forward in attempting to sweep Samit Patel. The left-arm spinner also had Benknestein stumped for 58 and forced Ben Harmison to play on for 11, while Andre Adams had both left-handed openers -Michael Di Venuto and Mark Stoneman – lbw. Adams now has 58 championshipvictims, five ahead of the field in County Championship Division One.As Sidebottom had gone in as nightwatchman yesterday and was unbeaten on five, he had to be marked down as retired not out. Pattinson replaced him at the crease and made 19 before he was last out with the total on 343, but his injury meant both sides are a bowler light. The fact that Mark Davies will take no further part because of a sciatic nerve problem could influence Durham’s declaration. Ian Blackwell will resume on 50 and Phil Mustard on 13, looking to set a target of at least 350.
