Whatever your persuasion when it comes to one-day cricket the Champions Trophy looks set to offer something for everyone. After the high-scoring opening match in Cardiff, there was a low-scoring nail-biter at The Oval with West Indies surviving major problems against Pakistan’s pace and spin combination to secure a priceless two-wicket victory.Amid a passionate, excitable crowd dominated by Pakistan support – this is arguably the closest they will get to a home crowd given their current situation – West Indies, who themselves used to have a vast following at The Oval in the 1970s and 1980s, threatened to throw away their outstanding work in the field with a nervous batting display. They eventually limped over the line with Denesh Ramdin and Kemar Roach at the crease: a wicketkeeper and a pace bowler, as it was in the darkness for the triumph in 2004.Perhaps aware that pushing and prodding was dangerous, Ramdin and Sunil Narine did not try to eke their way to the target after Dwayne Bravo, in his first match as captain, was lbw to Saeed Ajmal with 28 still required. The bold, and occasionally reckless, approach quickly sunk the requirement down to six only for Narine to edge Mohammad Irfan behind. A few tense deliveries followed until Roach, in the spirit of Ian Bradshaw, scythed a boundary over the off side.Pakistan’s bowlers, as they have regularly in the past, so nearly rescued their batsmen. Irfan’s bounce was intimidating, Wahab Riaz’s pace unsettling and Saeed Ajmal’s variations beguiling. But, after just two of their batsmen reached double figures – Misbah-ul-Haq ended unbeaten on a career-best 96 – they were just short of runs.Despite losing two early wickets against the towering Irfan, a partnership of 63 between Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels had made significant inroads into the chase and brought the requirement down below 100. Then a well-flighted doosra from Ajmal flummoxed Gayle as he tried to launch it over the leg side and Pakistan sensed their opening.Wahab, on the ground where he took a five-wicket haul on his Test debut in 2010, bowled with pace and controlled aggression throughout – occasionally nudging 90mph – and produced a lifting delivery which brushed Ramnaresh Sarwan’s edge.Samuels had unfurled a couple of the sparkling off-drives which lit up the previous English season, but when he charged at Mohammad Hafeez and was beaten by the drift the game had edged back in Pakistan’s favour.Kieron Pollard, shelving almost all his natural instincts apart from one straight blow for six, produced probably his most cautious one-day innings – taking 18 balls to get off the mark – alongside Bravo which changed the balance of power again. But Pollard was another batsman undone by pace and bounce as Kamran Akmal completed the fourth of his five dismissals and West Indies’ lower-order depth was severely tested.It was a fantastic match for those who enjoy their cricket with the ball holding sway. Roach knocked over the top of Pakistan’s batting with three wickets in his first four overs, leaving them 15 for 3, and Narine sparked another collapse in the middle order with six wickets falling for 33.Either side of those wobbles, Nasir Jamshed and Misbah repaired a lot of the early damage with a fourth-wicket stand of 90, only for it to be wastefully given away amid rash shots and run outs from the lower order. Only Irfan, at No. 11, showed the common sense to try and stay with his captain but could not quite help him to a maiden one-day hundred.During the tense finish, the 32 runs added for the last wicket were shaping as vital, as was the let-off Misbah received before he had scored which did not cast Ramdin in a glowing light. It was not just a simple dropped chance; Ramdin initially gathered the inside edge which would have given Roach his fourth wicket but in falling to his left the ball escaped his gloves.Although it was clearly grounded, Ramdin then rolled the ball to the square-leg umpire and claimed the catch. Perhaps he was unaware of the Law that the fielder has to also be in control of the release – and not just the catch – but it did not look good for Ramdin on replays.If the chance had been cleanly taken, Pakistan would have been 17 for 4. Roach roughed up their top order with an outstanding six-over spell which had begun by removing Imran Farhat in the opening over. Hafeez was bowled by a full, straight delivery which he played around and then Asad Shafiq, suckered in by some extra bounce, cut to third man. By now, Bravo was responding with the “attacking” brand of cricket he promised by setting fields that included three slips, a short leg and a leg gully.Mishab took 14 balls to score – not that he gets flustered by such issues – and when he burst out of his shell with a straight six off Pollard, Pakistan were beginning to prosper for the first time. But it all began to unravel again when Jamshed, two balls after reaching a grafting fifty, picked out long-off. Three deliveries later Shoaib Malik – surrounded by close fielders – chipped to short midwicket and Akmal became Narine’s third when he edged a cut. Despite Misbah’s resilience, and the skills of his bowlers, it was a costly collapse.

When Samuels took a wicket in his final over, he stood mid-pitch, face lit up in jubilation, and began to shudder while dusting himself off. Incoming team-mates committed to the caper. Each one picked a spot on Samuels’ body and brushed him down ecstatically. It is a moment few who were in the ground will ever forget, and an emphatic expression of uniquely Caribbean cricketing fun. On the eve of their second Champions Trophy group match, against India at The Oval though, West Indies coach Ottis Gibson hoped his side will be known for more than just their colour.”That’s the one thing you will get when you come to the stadium to watch West Indies play, you will be entertained,” Gibson said. “There was a time not long ago where we entertained you and ended up on the wrong side of the result, and we’re hoping to change that. We saw against Pakistan a very close, entertaining match – low scoring but very entertaining – and we actually got the right result. We’re looking to do the same again.”Samuels and company had helped deliver West Indies’ first major world title since 1979 (although they won the Champions Trophy in 2004). In the intervening years – particularly since the mid-1990s – West Indies had slid drastically from their perch atop the cricket world, and Gibson hoped the triumph in Colombo would become the beginning of West Indies’ road to regaining credibility.”When you look at the style of play that we have as a nation, Twenty20 lends itself to the way we play, the way we like to play. Having said that, Twenty20 to me is always about entertainment. The 50‑over format and, more importantly for me, the Test format, is where the real skills of cricket need to be applied.”In the past, we’ve had this group of players together, and we’ve gone to major tournaments with high expectations, and we didn’t do as well as we could have done or should have done. We’ll have a really good discussion about the Indian players and stuff like that, and those guys will form part of the main part of that discussion.”Gibson said their strategy is unlikely to prey on India batsmen’s perceived weakness against the short ball and would instead seek to maximise West Indies’ strengths. India exited the World Twenty20 in England in 2009, after several batsmen had their techniques exposed, and the same deficiency also contributed to their downfall in England in 2011, when they lost the Test series 4-0 and the ODI series 3-0.”The last time we used short-pitched bowling, it was Joel Garner, Colin Croft, Michael Holding and people like that,” Gibson said. “We don’t have those tall guys anymore, so as we saw against Pakistan, we pitched it up, we swung it a little bit and we put it in the right areas. Hoje, quando se pensa na onda de vitórias alvinegras, o que logo se vem à mente é a ótima fase de Erik. Com o contrato renovado com o Botafogo, o atacante assumiu de vez o papel de protagonista e desandou a fazer gols. Todos os seis tentos do jogador em 2019 foram marcados em fevereiro.

Erik tem iniciado as partidas como ponta-direita, invertido o lado com Rodrigo Pimpão com uma certafrequência, ao longo dos jogos, e, esporadicamente, feito a função de um falso 9. A confiança é tão elevada que o camisa 11 tem assumido a bronca nas cobranças depênalti. A fase está iluminada.

DEFESA SÓLIDA

Certamente a considerável invencibilidade não seria possível no caso de um time desequilibrado, ou seja, bem no ataque e vulnerável na defesa. Inicialmente, Zé Ricardo vibrou quando Carli retornou de lesão, no jogo contra o Boavista, justamente o primeiro da talsequência. Ao lado de Gabriel, o argentino trouxe segurança ao setor e, com a sua nova lesão, viu Marcelo Benevenuto reassumir a titularidade na temporada e manter o alto nível de atuação do setor – que passa também pela ótima fase do garoto Jonathan.

– Tudo é fruto do trabalho do Zé, da comissão e dos jogadores. Estamos executando o que o Zé vem pedindo. Estamos muitos felizes pelo momento. O sistema defensivo não são apenas os quatro de trás e os goleiros. Começa com o Kieza e temos que valorizar todos. A perda do Carli foi enorme, mas sabíamos do potencial do Marcelo e ficamos felizes com a confiança que o grupo passou para ele – comentou Gabriel, em entrevista coletiva na última quinta.

ATUAÇÕES CIRÚRGICAS

Até pelo elenco enxuto, Zé já esperava uma enorme dificuldade nomês, com quatro jogos de mata-matas no calendário – três se fosse eliminado para o Campinense na fase inicial da Copa do Brasil. O fato é que, quando não deu parapôr a bola no chão e dominar as ações de partidas encardidas, a equipe alvinegra foi cirúrgica quando adotou uma postura mais reativa.

Ocorreu a última situação emtrês dos seis jogos de fevereiro. Primeiro, contra o Campinense, que precisava vencer para sair com a vaga. O Botafogo não esteve em noite inspirada, mas, bem postado, chegou a dois gols cruciais – sendo um através de um lindo chute de Alex Santana, de fora. E também do meio da rua, Alex voltara a marcar contra o Defensa y Justicia, no jogo da volta, quando o Botafogo não sucumbiuà enorme pressão dos argentinos em Buenos Aires e saiu com um 3 a 0 com três finalizações na meta adversária. Diante do organizado Cuiabá-MT, esta semana, o cenário foi bem parecido.

REDENÇÃO DE PIMPÃO

E Rodrigo Pimpão foi outra peça essencial para que os lances esporádicos fossem parar no fundo das redes. Sem brilho e na reserva em 2018, o atacante ressurgiu e se tornouimprescindível no atual momento do Botafogo.

Rodrigo Pimpão voltou a iniciar entre os 11 contra o Boavista e, desde então, participou diretamente de seis gols em cinco jogos, já que foi poupado contra o Vasco: foram doispênaltis sofridos, duas assistências e dois gols marcados.

No último treino no Rio, os titulares do Flamengo venceram os reservas por 4 a 0 no Estádio da Gávea. O atacante Bruno Henrique, com três gols, foi o destaque da atividade realizada na manhã de domingo. Arrascaeta também fez o dele. O trabalho, outra vez, pôde ser acompanhado pelos sócios do clube.

The openers Matthew Short and Damien Mortimer started positively, scoring at five an over before the left-arm seamer Chama Milind took the first wicket, getting Short caught by Hooda low at short midwicket. Milind struck again in his following over, when Ben McDermott flicked one straight to square leg. Hooda took the first of his three wickets when Mortimer spooned one to the captain Vijay Zol at mid-on.Hooda struck again four overs later, getting Jake Doran to edge to slip, leaving Australia at 4 for 58. Another wicket went down the following over when Sean Willis punched one straight to short cover. A brilliant catch at leg slip by Sarfaraz Khan gave Hooda his third wicket. India polished off the tail even before Australia could bat out half their overs. And he keeps doing stuff that keeps making him a hotter topic. Man of the Series in the Champions Trophy. Another hundred in Zimbabwe. Now, a 248 in a one-dayer in South Africa. How is he doing what he is doing? How is it different from what he was doing all those years in domestic cricket? How is it different from what he did when he first played for India in 2010? Two men who have watched him closely over the years say that mostly, it is all in the head. Call it what you want – frame of mind, confidence, temperament, mental strength, self-belief; Dhawan’s positivity, along with improved shot selection, has translated into this extraordinary comeback, feel Vijay Dahiya and Lalchand Rajput.Dahiya, the former India and Delhi wicketkeeper, knows Dhawan from his days in junior cricket. He has played with him and later coached him. Was Dhawan always special and just ignored or has something critical fallen into place? Dahiya says he has never come across this avatar of Dhawan before.”I have not seen him batting before the way he is now, even in the nets,” Dahiya told ESPNcricinfo. “That kind of batting display is just phenomenal. There is no comparison. Last year, he had a pretty mediocre Ranji season, if you go by the standards he is setting right now. [Dhawan made 461 runs in 11 innings] which I think is alright for an opener in Indian first-class cricket when you end up playing seven-eight games. He had a fantastic Challenger Trophy [a domestic one-day tournament]. But what he is doing right now is something really special.”After a short, unsuccessful stint with the Indian one-day team, Dhawan was out for a couple of years before the sensational Test debut against Australia. Lalchand Rajput, the former India batsman and now India A coach, says that one knock has generated so much confidence, it continues to feed itself and extend Dhawan’s streak.”One good innings against Australia in the Test match … ” Rajput said. “Cricket is a game of confidence. If you are confident, you bat like a dream. Plus, playing the way he did in England in the Champions Trophy … He has gone from strength to strength and is batting at his peak now.”Dahiya concurs, saying not much has changed in terms of ability. “I think it is more mental,” Dahiya said. “I’ll say that skill-wise, he was the same. What I see now is that mentally he has become very strong. He is backing himself. He is extremely confident, which plays such an important role in any sport. He is playing all the shots against all bowlers in any conditions. That shows how confident he is.”Every time you see him batting, it looks like a display of cricket intelligence. A lot of players who make runs sometimes end up playing shots as if they are millionaires and don’t care about the value of their wickets. If you look at him, though, he is beautifully stretching his purple patch and making it count.”Also, I don’t think he is carrying any baggage. That is something you can’t see from the outside yet – the baggage of expectations. Every time he goes out there, he starts beautifully, understands what is required, and goes on from there. He takes his time to build and then flourishes.”Rajput had witnessed a very different Dhawan from close quarters just a year ago, when he was coach on the A side’s tour of the West Indies, where the opener averaged 7.50 in the unofficial Tests. Rajput believes Dhawan has used the time away from the national side to tighten his game.”It is not only mental, it is about selecting the right balls [to go after] as well,” Rajput said. “He has matured now and is never satisfied. He wants to do well every game. Look at his conversion rate. If he passes 50 or 60, he gets a hundred, in Champions Trophy, in Zimbabwe, now as well, big hundreds.”In the West Indies [in 2012], he used to play too many shots too early, and as an opener, that is taking too much risk. He always had the shots but not the selection, but now he knows what shot to play and what to not play. He has really developed control over his off-side game.”Dhawan’s form has lasted half a year now. How long before international bowlers find a chink somewhere? Dahiya does not think that moment, although inevitable, has arrived yet. “Everyone will always have shortcomings,” Dahiya said. “It is for the opposition to figure them out. Right now, he has played against almost all the top sides and it does not look like people have sorted something out. We saw in Zimbabwe in one of the games he got out to a short ball but in the next game he was scoring off them. Again, I will say his frame of mind is brilliant right now.”
