Harris hopes 'scary' Johnson returns

Ryan Harris believes Mitchell Johnson will unsettle England’s batsmen with his pace if, as anticipated, he is recalled for the first Ashes Test at the Gabba. Australia’s selectors will name the squad for the Brisbane Test on Tuesday and Johnson is likely to be in the group alongside Harris, Peter Siddle, James Faulkner and perhaps one of Ben Hilfenhaus and the uncapped Ben Cutting, as Australia keep their options open with Shane Watson’s fitness to bowl still unclear.Whatever the case, Johnson is expected to join Siddle and Harris in the XI for what would be his first Ashes Test since the end of the disastrous home campaign in 2010-11. Johnson, 32, has been in and out of the Test side since then; he played three of the six home Tests last summer but his only appearance since then was a highly unsuccessful performance against India in Delhi in March, at the tail-end of a woeful Australian tour. After being one of the four players who was suspended for a Test for failing to do his homework on that tour, Johnson took 0 for 60 in his only match, made a golden duck and gave away multiple boundary overthrows in the field. But the absence of James Pattinson, Mitchell Starc and Jackson Bird due to injury has brought Johnson firmly back into contention for the Ashes, and Harris said he was impressed with what he saw of Johnson during last month’s ODIs against India.”He’s right to go. I’ve watched him bowl in India and it’s been scary,” Harris said. “He’s bowled that fast. I saw comments the other day in the paper that he only rushed Yuvraj and … Raina. But Dhawan is a very good player, and Sharma, and he had them jumping. He’s bowling fast. I hope he’s back. He’s had a tough time.”He’s been out of the Test team for such a long time and I know, I’ve spoken to him, he wants to be back in the team. He’s done everything he can … I’d be very surprised if he’s not in the squad tomorrow. He’s bowling very fast, and if he’s bowling that pace, I know I wouldn’t want to be facing it and I know the Englishmen wouldn’t want to be facing it.”Johnson also had the South Australia batsmen jumping during last week’s Sheffield Shield match at the WACA, where he finished with five wickets for the match and had a number of catches put down off his bowling. The Test captain Michael Clarke said at the weekend he thought Johnson even had the potential to be the Player of the Series if everything clicked in this Ashes, but first the selectors need to work out how Johnson and the rest of the bowlers fit together in the attack. The main issue is the fitness of Watson and whether he will be able to bowl at the Gabba or will play as a batsman only. If his hamstring problem keeps him from bowling, the selectors could be tempted to opt for another allrounder to give Clarke a fifth bowling choice, but Harris said he would be comfortable being part of a four-man attack if that was the way the selectors went for the first Test.”I’m happy to go with four,” Harris said. “That’s my job, I’ve got to bowl. It’s probably good for the team if you have the fifth option. Shane Watson bowling and batting in our team is priceless. You need him batting and bowling, but you also [especially] need him batting. So whatever he needs to do and whatever has to be done for him to play, whether that’s not bowling, that’s fine, we need him in there. Either way, four or five, we’ve got to do the job, no matter what happens.”One potential dark horse is Cutting, who impressed for Australia A against England last week and may yet edge the more experienced Hilfenhaus for a place in the squad. Cutting, 26, has an outstanding first-class record at the Gabba, where he has taken 59 wickets at 19.83, and his Queensland team-mate Harris believes Cutting has improved his bowling significantly over the past few summers.”In the last couple of years he’s just improved so much,” Harris said. “He was always known to bowl probably a little bit too short. It’s something I’ve worked on with him a bit and he’s worked with the staff at the Queensland Bulls. But he’s bowling beautifully at the moment, he’s bowling good pace and he’s pitching the ball right up. And his batting – we all saw what he can do in the Ryobi Cup. He’s virtually a genuine allrounder. I’d love to see him in there around the squad.”

Buoyed Odisha look to upstage injury-hit Mumbai

Jharkhand’s performance against Mumbai in the last round has inspired a low-profile Odisha side that is looking to upstage the defending champions at the Wankhede Stadium

It’s not often that a low-profile Ranji team like Odisha walks into the Wankhede Stadium and suggests that an upset is a likely possibility. Mumbai – an intimidating team on the domestic circuit, specially when they play at home – are used to grinding their opponents out, but the absence of their top players due to national commitments and a long list of injuries have left them in a vulnerable position. Last week, Jharkhand stung Mumbai at Wankhede, first through Saurabh Tiwary’s double-century, then through Varun Aaron’s spell, and the visitors left satisfied having stolen two points more than the home side.”The last game was a good wake-up call,” Wasim Jaffer, the Mumbai captain for this round, said. “This side is very young and we are missing a lot of senior players. Apart from me, there is hardly anybody who has played a lot. But there is a lot of talent and we need to look to win this game.”Odisha have played Mumbai five times before this and the best result they managed was a draw in a match where rain washed away two days. In the remaining games, a loss by 315 runs in 2008-09 was the only time Odisha didn’t lose by an innings. Jharkhand’s fight, however, has spurred their southern neighbours.”There is a chance of an upset here, especially, after their last match,” Biplab Samantray, the Odisha captain, said. “If Jharkhand can take an innings lead against Mumbai, then why can’t we? We also defeated Jharkhand earlier and we have that confidence.”Mumbai have been further hit by Abhishek Nayar’s unavailability for this match, due to hip and ankle injuries, and that has hurt their team balance. The batting line-up has Jaffer, Aditya Tare, Kaustubh Pawar and Suryakumar Yadav, but their bowling appears raw.On Friday, the 42-year-old Pravin Tambe was still bowling a mix of googlies and legspinners in the centre, long after his team-mates had left. Asked if Tambe was in line for his first-class debut, Jaffer said: “We might look to play him probably because he is an experienced guy. His spin brings in a lot of variety and he can bat as well. That would give us a lot of cushion. We still haven’t decided on the final XI, but I think he is a very strong contender to play.”However, on a pitch that is likely to be batting friendly, Odisha were brimming with confidence, especially after giving Delhi a strong fight in their last match. “It was the match against Delhi that boosted our confidence,” Samantray said. “It proves that anything can happen in cricket. On a particular day, any team can beat a better side.”And Odisha were keen on not leaving anything to chance. They had two days of extended nets at the Wankhede, each lasting more than four hours. Samantray said their only plan ahead of the game was that once the batsmen were set, they would have to make sure they batted on. On Friday, Samantray, setting an example, had to be asked to cut short his batting session because the ground staff wanted to pull the nets down.

Johnson happy to be the intimidator

Mitchell Johnson is pleased to be considered Australia’s enforcer ahead of the Test series against South Africa, but he is conscious of the way his career nosedived after he was in a similar situation in South Africa five years ago

Mitchell Johnson is pleased to be considered Australia’s enforcer ahead of the Test series against South Africa, but he is conscious of the way his career nosedived after he was in a similar situation in South Africa five years ago. This time around, Johnson has landed in South Africa as the reigning Allan Border Medallist and having just been Man of the Series in Australia’s remarkable Ashes clean-sweep.In 2009, he flew to South Africa having just broken Graeme Smith’s left hand with a vicious, spitting delivery in the final Test in Sydney. Johnson responded with another outstanding display against the South Africans and was Player of the Series in the return contest in South Africa, and remarkably managed to break Smith’s other hand during the Durban Test with another fast, rising ball. However, the Ashes tour of England that followed later that year began a slump for Johnson, who struggled to replicate his exploits against South Africa. Now, more mature at 32, he hopes that he will again be able to cash in on his confidence and form against a team that has brought him some of his best memories in Test cricket.”I’m happy to be the intimidator and to be talked of like that,” Johnson told reporters in South Africa on Monday. “I’m coming over here after a great series being the intimidator against England. They’ve obviously seen all that, and I think they [South African spectators] are excited about seeing that as well”I had a lot of English [supporters] come up to me after the series, and even through the series, and they were just saying how good it was and how it brought Test cricket back to life. It’s great to hear those words. But I know I’ve been in this situation before. In ’09, everything was going really well [and then declined], but I’ve learned from that. I’m not going to underestimate anything – I’m just going to keep doing what I’m doing.”Johnson said his past success against Smith – as well as hitting him a number of times he has also dismissed him five times from eight Tests – should hold him in good stead on this tour.”That stuff can be in the back of their minds, definitely. You hope so,” Johnson said. “I’ve played against Graeme Smith a few times now and I’ve hit him a couple of times. I’m hoping that’s still in the back of his mind. That hopefully gives you a bit of an advantage.”But it is a new series and they are a tough opposition. They’re very strong mentally and they’re the No.1 side for a good reason. Once that Test series starts, we’ve got to start from scratch. We’ve got to keep improving as a cricket team. Our goal is to take them over, so it’s a really important series for us.”Johnson’s Ashes series has rocketed him up to No.8 on the ICC’s Test bowling rankings, which means that the upcoming three Tests will feature the five best fast bowlers in the world based on those rankings. Vernon Philander and Dale Steyn are ranked Nos. 1 and 2 and Ryan Harris is third. Peter Siddle sits sixth on the ICC list but all the rest of the bowlers in the top eight are spinners. However, the Australians will have to enter the series without match practice in the South African conditions after their four-day warm-up match in Potchefstroom, which was due to start on Wednesday, was cancelled due to persistent wet weather. Instead, they will have to train in Centurion and hope for some outdoor practice in the lead-up to the first Test.
