forma a obter as autorizações necessárias.

Australia hit back for five-run win

Brilliant for much of this summer, Australia settled for simply being the lucky country on their national day, as a fortuitous moment at the pointy end of the final ODI effectively handed the hosts a fourth limited-overs victory out of five

‘Familiar story with England on Australia Day thriller’

Brilliant for much of this summer, Australia settled for simply being the lucky country on their national day, as a fortuitous moment at the pointy end of the final ODI effectively handed the hosts a fourth limited-overs victory out of five over England and a ninth from 10 encounters including the Ashes clean sweep. In a scrappy contest dictated largely by the sluggishness of Adelaide Oval’s drop-in pitch, Australia posted a mediocre total but defended it grandly against an England team who threatened to take control at several stages of the chase but could never quite manage to wrest command of the evening.Alastair Cook, Joe Root and Eoin Morgan all contributed useful scores to take England close, but it was left to Ravi Bopara to try to take his team to a second win in a row. He seemed likely to carry them there, until falling victim to a most unfortunate end, as Matthew Wade’s fumble behind the stumps bounced back onto the leg bail with the batsman’s foot barely raised. The Australians celebrated their win raucously and fittingly – it was one more moment of joy in a summer brimful of them, while England rued the swings of outrageous fortune that inevitably seem to go against the side to fall behind. The hosts owed much to Nathan Coulter-Nile, who delivered perhaps his best and most disciplined spell for Australia, before Clint McKay gave nothing away in the closing overs.James Faulkner also bowled well despite complaining of knee soreness earlier in the day, while Shaun Marsh may be under his own fitness cloud having left the field midway through England’s chase. Aaron Finch was the beneficiary of two dropped chances in the afternoon but was beaten for pace by a revved up Stuart Broad, before Shane Watson, Michael Clarke and Shaun Marsh all perished to loose strokes as they tried to raise the hosts’ run rate. The remainder of the innings was a struggle despite the best efforts of George Bailey, the only batsman to pass 50 in the face of a diligent England bowling line-up. Broad’s pace and direction showed the way for his colleagues, while Ben Stokes, Tim Bresnan, Chris Jordan and James Tredwell also delivered sturdy spells.Ian Bell and Cook began smartly, until the difficulties posed for shot-making on a decidedly slow surface began to rear. Bell tried to drive on the up and was taken at mid-off. Stokes’ attempted pull shot was not middled and settled in the hands of midwicket. Then after a partnership with Root that hinted at success, Cook himself mistimed to short cover.Root showed admirable composure on his return to the team, unhurried and unflustered while building another stand with Morgan. At 3 for 154 they were close to breaking the back of the chase, only for Morgan to follow his predecessors in perishing to a lofted stroke, this time finding Shane Watson at mid-off from the bowling of James Faulkner.James Faulkner’s late wickets helped turn the match on its head•Getty Images

Three runs later and Root was trudging off too, his attempted paddle only succeeding in picking out short fine leg. A previously restive Australia Day crowd found its voice as the Australian huddle grew more enthusiastic. Jos Buttler enhanced their anticipation when he picked out deep midwicket with a pull shot, and Bresnan’s one mowed six over wide long-on was cancelled out when he was thrown out by Glenn Maxwell, running in from cover. Those who had witnessed the final day of the Adelaide Test against South Africa were made nervous by the sight of Wade stationing himself up to the stumps for McKay, but the bowler averted any problems by bringing one between bat and pad to bowl Broad. That left Bopara with just Jordan and Tredwell for company, and the fourth ball of the penultimate over brought unexpected reward for Wade’s decision to stay up.Beaten outside off stump by McKay, Bopara very briefly lifted his back foot, and at the same moment Wade’s failure to glove the ball cleanly had it ricochet back onto the stumps. It was an exceptionally tight call, but the third umpire Kumar Dharmasena went the way of Australia. Bopara walked off in a daze, and Watson bowled a suitably tight final over to make the match safe.Jordan and Broad had almost as much reason to curse their ill-fortune early in the afternoon, when Cook and Bopara both dropped chances they should have taken from Finch. Jordan’s new ball swing posed problems at one end while Broad’s pace was notable at the other, eventually rewarded when Finch was far too late on a ball that uprooted off stump.Watson made a fairly ugly duck, narrowly avoiding an lbw appeal and DRS referral by Broad then swishing at a wide delivery and offering a catch to Buttler. Clarke spent 26 balls over 8 before trying to smear Bresnan across the line and also being bowled, and Marsh’s start was wasted when he clipped Stokes to midwicket where this time Cook held on.For a time Bailey and Maxwell stemmed the bleeding, manoeuvring the ball around a somewhat spongy outfield with the occasional muscular blow to the boundary. However Maxwell’s patience is far from infinite, and a dabble too many outside off stump brought an edge behind the wicket.Bailey’s innings was nothing spectacular but he came closest to finding the right balance between aversion and aggression to score at a reasonable rate. Even so, his last 23 balls were devoid of a boundary, creating pressure that resulted in an attempted punch down the ground that skewed instead to mid-on.Wade did his best with a busy 31, then Faulkner and Coulter-Nile tried to hit out at the finish, but the final tally looked meagre. Jordan was rewarded for his unrewarded earlier efforts with two wickets in as many balls during an excellent final over, but was to be left crestfallen at the finish as the chase fell maddeningly yet somehow fittingly short.

Collingwood gets England World Cup coaching role

Paul Collingwood’s reputation as one of the coming men in England’s coaching ranks has grown with the announcement that he will join England’s coaching staff in the Caribbean and the ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh

Paul Collingwood has won a temporary coaching role with England after guiding Scotland to the World Cup•International Cricket Council

Paul Collingwood’s reputation as one of the coming men in England’s coaching ranks has grown with the announcement that he will join England’s coaching staff for the forthcoming tour to the Caribbean and the ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh.Collingwood’s energy and ability to draw the maximum potential from players has been suggested twice in recent months. Firstly, he led Durham to the Championship as captain during a traumatic time in which their director of cricket Geoff Cook was recovering from a heart attack. Then he made a success of a short-term coaching assignment with Scotland by guiding them to the World Cup finals. If Collingwood might not be so much of a coming man that he is regarded quite yet as an irresistible contender for the role of England team director, vacated by Andy Flower at the end of the Ashes series, his appointment identifies him as a potential England coach of the future.Collingwood will effectively replace Richard Halsall as the assistant coach with a specific responsibility for fielding. The decision follows England’s shoddy fielding performances in Australia which failed to retain the early excellence shown during Halsall’s tenure. This is also is likely to be a highly popular appointment as England seek to regain equilibrium after a disastrous Ashes tour and the controversial hatchet job on Kevin Pietersen. Collingwood is increasingly seen as an excellent dressing room man manager, optimistic, able to work with all types and a shrewd judge of character, which are precisely the sort of qualities England need after their implosion in Australia.Collingwood will join England on a short-term secondment from Durham, where he remains captain and where he is fully expected to fulfil his playing role this season. His decision to continue his first-class career after retiring from international cricket, which was by no means a given, was an immediate boost for the county game. Increasingly, it is beginning to look like a great career move. It has provided him with a chance to underline his leadership skills.Ashley Giles, the England Limited Overs Coach, added: “Colly will add great energy and a winning T20 pedigree to the tour party. We are really looking forward to his involvement.”Paul Downton, Managing Director England cricket, said: “I am delighted that Paul has agreed to join the England coaching staff for the trips to the West Indies and Bangladesh. He was an outstanding performer for England and proved himself to be a successful captain in Twenty20 cricket and the county game. We are looking forward to the enthusiastic approach Paul brings to all the teams that he has been involved with over the years.”More recently he has also demonstrated his growing coaching potential by helping mastermind Scotland’s victory in the ICC World Cup qualifier in New Zealand – a result which guaranteed Scotland a place in the ICC World Cup finals for the first time since 2007.”The ECB has managed to arrest a fortnight in which it has been widely pilloried by making two popular appointments in a single day. In both Collingwood and Angus Fraser, who has been named as a selector, they have identified roles for two of the most popular and grounded figures in the English game.

Consistency, momentum achievable in T20s – Bailey

George Bailey thinks both consistency and momentum are achievable in T20s, although doing so is difficult, and also needs some fortune

Abhishek Purohit in Mirpur22-Mar-2014Consistency. Momentum. Such words are spoken about a lot, but how much do they really matter in the context of the shortest format? Is it possible for a team to display consistency for any period in T20s, where even a single over, or a few deliveries even, could turn a game around? Similarly, is it possible for a side to build momentum in T20s, especially in a tournament such as the World T20, where so much is riding on probably every game? George Bailey, the Australia captain, thinks both consistency and momentum are achievable, although doing so is difficult, and also needs some fortune.”Whoever wins it (the World T20) will be consistent, I can guarantee you that, and that’s probably the key,” Bailey said ahead of Australia’s opener against Pakistan. “I guess the shorter the format, the closer it brings two teams, the more it comes down to one incident – it can be one catch, might be one over, might be one wicket that’s taken. There’s a whole different range of ways that a game can be won and lost in T20s and it can happen quickly.’I didn’t see many short third-mans before T20′ – Bailey•BCCI

“I guess every team when they play their best is probably going to win their game. Every team that plays at their worst is going to lose. The challenge is to make sure that the gap is not too big. It is going to be very hard to play your best game every game but the team that’s most consistent is going to win more often than not and that’s what we are after, is just that consistency.”Bailey pointed to West Indies in the previous edition of the tournament in Sri Lanka in 2012 when queried about momentum. “I think the team that wins it will have it. Going back to the last World Cup (T20), West Indies had momentum. It really comes down to two stages. I think you have got to play some good, consistent cricket to get to the knockout stages, and then you hope that you have carried some momentum there, that you are playing some good cricket and then that little bit of luck.”The Australia captain did not think T20 was the slam-bang format it appeared to be for many watchers, and said that the skills it had brought into the game were starting to make an impact in other formats as well, especially on fielding standards and innovations. “There is a fair bit of skill involved. We are seeing some pretty amazing cricket. You are always going to have traditionalists who prefer other formats and to be honest, they tend to be quite old people, and that’s fine, there’s no issues with that.”But I have no doubt that T20 will improve the standard of every format of the game because you are just seeing such different arrays of skills. You are seeing guys make fast decisions, you are seeing guys field unbelievably well. Everything is at a high intensity, a high pace. I think we are seeing an improvement in one-dayers. T20 has been around for a handful of years and we are seeing a change in one-day cricket already. It’s a pretty exciting format of the game, I reckon.”I didn’t see many short third-mans before T20. I think that’s becoming really common. You are starting to see deep midwicket becoming really common. I’ve seen a bloke field behind the bowler, I have seen two catchers at midwicket, spinners bowling with no one out behind square leg. You see right-handers (bowlers) coming round the wicket to right-handers, you see plenty of innovation. I think you see guys field where the balls are generally hit.”One aspect of the game that was believed would be of little use in T20s was spin, but slow bowlers have taken onto the format as well, and Bailey said especially in conditions such as those in Bangladesh, they had an important role to perform. “I think spin plays a huge role in T20, wherever it’s played in the world. It tends to go one of two ways but certainly in these conditions, it tends to be match-winning.”It’s a challenge. We know we are going to face lots of spin, we know we are probably going to bowl a lot of spin. You approach is to play as well as you can.”
