Bull backs Wolves to sign Dwight McNeil

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Steve Bull, who made 561 appearances for Wolves, has encouraged Wolves to go all out and sign Dwight McNeil from Burnley, claiming he’s gone under the radar.

Wolves have struggled in front of goal this season after finding the net just 28 times, and Bull believes McNeil, who Wolves reportedly targeted last summer, would add goals and creativity to the Midlands side.

The 21-year old has just been called up to the latest England U21 squad and boasts seven goals and 14 assists in 98 games for Burnley.

McNeil often seems to go under the radar but showed a big glimpse of his quality with his fantastic goal in the win against Everton at Goodison Park last weekend.

McNeil featuring for the Clarets certainly hasn’t put off Bull who thinks he could be a great signing for Wolves.

Speaking on the young Premier League winger, Bull told FFC:

“It’s very rare that talented players like that go under the radar, Leicester found one in James Maddison. So, yeah all day long I’d take him.

“Put him in a good side full of talented and skilful players like we’ve got and it might bring him on leaps and bounds.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/exclusive-andreas-sondergaard-wolves-premier-league” title=”Exclusive! Andreas Sondergaard talks all things Wolves”]

“So, you never know what might happen but, any new kids on the block will be good for the club.”

Wolves sold Diogo Jota to Liverpool in the summer and lost Raul Jimenez to a fractured skull last year so it’s been a tough season for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side to find goals in the final third.

McNeil is currently Burnley’s joint 10th top scorer of all time in the Premier League at just 21-years old it could be a good player for Wolves to target this summer.

Charlton must wave goodbye to Oztumer

Charlton Athletic boss Nigel Adkins will have plenty of decisions to make this summer.

The Addicks may not know which division they’ll be competing in, given they could still sneak into the League One playoffs, but that shouldn’t stop Steve Gallen and co. from planning ahead.

No fewer than eight first-team players are out of contract, whilst six loan deals are also set to expire, as per Transfermarkt.

This includes a player currently playing his football away from The Valley in Erhun Oztumer, who joined division rivals Bristol Rovers back in October.

The versatile 29-year-old midfielder has struggled to make an impression with the Gas languishing in the relegation zone. In fact, he’s been one of their worst performers (6.3), as per WhoScored ratings.

Only one other player to feature in ten or more matches has managed worse.

If you’re failing at a club facing the drop, then surely there is no place for him back at a team vying for promotion, especially if they do go up to the Championship.

In 27 appearances in all competitions, the playmaker who is lauded for his creativity has only provided two goals and two assists, playing in a variety of roles ranging from no.10 to right-winger.

Three other players are actually recording more key passes per outing than Oztumer (0.9), too. Whilst seven players to feature for the Addicks this term would rank above him back in southeast London, only adding to the fact that he likely has no future under Adkins.

Once dubbed the non-league Messi at Dulwich Hamlet, it was no surprise to see the former Sivasspor prospect rise up through the leagues.

“It was such a privilege to watch Erhun at Dulwich and he’s honestly one of the most exciting players I’ve ever seen in the flesh,” said Hugo Greenhalgh, one half of the Forward The Hamlet podcast.

Oztumer quickly earned the praise of former Rovers boss Ben Garner too, after excelling in their FA Cup win at his former club, Walsall. “He was the brightest player on the pitch today,” Garner said. “Some of his quality, his link-up play was absolutely fantastic.”

However, matches like that have been few and far between, especially in an Addicks shirt, where he has only ever scored and assisted once in 19 appearances.

It’s time to wave goodbye to the 29-year-old this summer, with his contract up, it’s an easy decision for Adkins and Gallen to make.

AND in other news, THIS emerging prospect could save Charlton a lot of money this summer…

    WHAT SARGENT SAID

Confidence is flowing through the 23-year-old frontman, with Sargent telling reporters of the simple explanation for his return to form: “It definitely helps when you are playing in your natural position. I've played it my whole life growing up, and I was talking about it with my agents the other day; this is the first season since I became a pro, where I started at the nine and played the whole season there. What do you know – I'm actually doing pretty well. I hope I can continue to score goals and help the team as much as possible. I'm doing the best I can – I have to give a lot of props to the guys. They are helping me out because you can't score goals alone. Hopefully, we continue to play the best possible football and put me in the best possible situations to score goals.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Sargent added on finding his shooting boots, with only three more efforts required in order to match his personal-best goal return from 2022-23: “I could have had four if I was sharp but I'm obviously feeling very confident at the moment and very good. I'm very happy with all the goals but even happier that the team is firing on all cylinders. Everyone is getting the best out of each other right now, and you can tell in the performances. Everyone is playing really good football, and I'm not sure you can really criticise anyone at the moment, so we have to keep it up.”

  • Arsenal take on Porto on Wednesday
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

A week ago, the Manchester United legend and pundit claimed that he does not consider Arsenal star Saka to be a world-class player as he is yet to prove his worth in the Champions League.

On Tuesday, Ferdinand boarded a flight to Portugal as he was on his way to cover Arsenal's Champions League round of 16 fixture against FC Porto for TNT Sports. A group of Arsenal fans were on the same flight and upon spotting the former defender on board, they started mocking him with chants of: “Saka’s world-class.”

  • HOW RIO FERDINAND REACTED TO THE CHANTS

The former England international received the chants quite sportingly as he responded to the fans via the flight interphone system. He cheekily replied: "I just wanna say, it's an absolute pleasure to travel with you Arsenal fans. I must say Saka is a fantastic player, just not world-class yet. He will be one day but just not yet."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The 22-year-old Gunners winger is in red-hot form having recorded six goals in his last four Premier League games, including braces in comprehensive wins over West Ham and Burnley in the last two game weeks. Overall, Saka has netted 15 times in 32 matches across all competitions this season and has provided 13 assists.

Wolves interested in Goncalo Guedes

Wolves have joined the race to sign Valencia star Goncalo Guedes, according to reports.

Mendes the key

The 24-year-old has recently been linked with a move to West Ham United after the La Liga club’s owner Peter Lim withdrew his funding from the financially deprived Los Murciélagos.

Guedes, who takes home a comfortable pay packet of £101k-per-week at the Mestalla Stadium, has only scored two goals and provided one assist from 19 appearances this season, picking up two man-of-the-match awards in the process (Whoscored).

Football Insider revealed that Wolves have the attacking midfielder securely in their sightings as part of Nuno Espirito Santo’s list of potential signings this summer.

The report added that Guedes is on the books of superagent Jorge Mendes and his Gestifute agency, which could play a key role in the move to the West Midlands being completed.

Transfer Tavern Verdict

On paper, this appears to be a signing that they can compete at a bargain rate considering the current goings-on at Valencia.

The problem that Wolves may have is convincing the player to join at a decreased salary. On his current wage, Guedes would automatically be Wolves’ highest earner which may disgruntle some current first-team figures.

Time will tell whether Mendes can flex his negotiating muscles and influence the Portuguese attacker to make the move to England.

Wednesday: Fans react to Urhoghide update

Many Sheffield Wednesday fans are reacting to the latest news provided by Dom Howson on Osaze Urhoghide, whose future has looked uncertain.

The 20-year-old defender started to emerge from the academy at the end of last season and has featured 12 times for the club since making his debut in January 2020 (Transfermarkt). Ten of these appearances have been in the Championship.

According to Howson, Wednesday have offered a new contract to Urhoghide, tweeting that he understands ‘talks are ongoing’. Meanwhile, the arrival of Darren Moore as manager is expected to accelerate things over the coming weeks.

This is very exciting news for fans of the club, especially since they are losing fellow academy star Liam Shaw, with the young striker heading to Scottish giants Celtic at the end of the campaign. One Owls fan even called it a “cracking” update about Urhoghide.

With the arrival of a new manager and a young player looking likely to commit his future to the club, it looks like things are starting to turn around at Hillsborough.

Here is how fans reacted to the news:

    WHAT HAPPENED?

It was in the aftermath of Chelsea's 6-0 win over Aston Villa back in November that the club announced that Hayes would depart at the end of the season to pursue a new opportunity, with that revealed a few days later to be the USWNT head coach role. The Blues' long-serving manager has now revealed that she told her players in the dressing room after that victory that she would be leaving and has described what the response was like.

  • WHAT HAYES SAID

"It was a silent dressing room. It was very reflective," Hayes told . "There was shock. But for me, too, it wasn’t just them. The players were happy for me, because they knew how much [my son] Harry meant, and how much I’ve sacrificed [time with him for the team]. And at the same time it was sad, because change was coming and that familiarity was about to end.

"But that feeling passed. The team have adapted, and they’re all excited for their future with a new coach. It’s important to keep mentioning that. They’ve had one voice for 11 years, not all of them, but it’s time, too, for them to have a different type of leader and a different type of learning, and vice-versa for me."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Since the news of Hayes departure was announced, Chelsea have continued to be a winning machine and look set to help her end her time with the club on a high. The Blues are top of the Women's Super League table, into the semi-finals of the Continental Cup and have reached the last eight in both the FA Cup and the Champions League.

"The players deserve all the credit, because they’re continuing to perform at such a high level, no matter the changes," Hayes added. "It’s a testament to their character and abilities. They know me and I know them and we both know we will fight to the end, no matter where I’ll be next year. I’ll give everything until the end and I’m massively optimistic for the remainder of the season."

Arsenal fans slam Bellerin vs Newcastle

Many Arsenal fans have been criticising the performance of Hector Bellerin the first half of their Premier League game at Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon.

The Spain international struggled defensively to try and contain the dangerous Allan Saint-Maximin, who he was up against on his flank, and aside from a tidy cross in the opening minutes which eventually fell to the feet of Mohamed Elneny to slot home, he did not offer too much going forward.

Some Gunners fans did not hold back when he missed a good chance midway through the first half either, spewing his shot well wide in the end.

The 26-year-old will be hoping to impress Mikel Arteta enough in the second half to earn himself a starting berth at right-back in their Europa League second leg at home to Villarreal on Thursday night.

Claim dropped on potential NUFC takeover

Kieran Maguire has dropped a big claim on Mike Ashley after he made some comments on the handling of the potential takeover of Newcastle United.

The Lowdown: Ashley makes takeover statement

In a statement released after the case HMRC held over the St. James’ Park faithful was discontinued, Ashley claimed that ‘dark forces’ were stopping them from becoming ‘the powerhouse the fans deserve.’

This is in reference to the proposed deal that he had with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) group, which was ultimately failed by the Premier League and one that he is desperately looking to get back onto the table.

The Latest: Maguire on Ashley comments

Maguire, who is an expert in football finance, has since given his thoughts to Football Insider on the comments that were made by Ashley:

“Mike Ashley’s comments were certainly very colourful.

“I think he was trying to ingratiate himself with the fans. But it’s the equivalent of the bloke who’s been having an affair with your wife asking you out for a pizza.

“Things have gone too far. I think he must hold Newcastle fans in complete contempt if he thinks that by coming out with comments like this he can get into their good books after more than a decade of not delivering.”

The Verdict: Ashley hypocritical

It seemed very hypocritical of Ashley to suggest that he wants to give to the fans what they deserve when the relationship between him and the Toon Army has not been the best due to the fact that he himself has failed to do exactly what he is speaking of.

As much as the takeover would bring riches to the North East, a lot of supporters would likely just be relieved that Ashley would be leaving the Tyneside club.

The potential deal between him and the consortium is at a delicate stage at the moment, with an arbitration case poised to take place between the Magpies and the top flight over the failed Owners and Directors Test.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-updates-2/” title=”Newcastle updates! (2)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

A positive result for NUFC could be a huge step in getting the takeover back on track, which would bring a lot of joy not just because of the possibility of climbing up to the top of the football food chain, but it would also mean an end to Ashley’s reign.
