Let's talk about the beauty of R Ashwin's bowling

The near-identical dismissals of Pope in Ahmedabad highlight Ashwin’s mastery of flight, drift and dip

Gautam Gambhir: Amazes me that R Ashwin doesn’t play white-ball cricket for India

He’s taken his 400th wicket now, and he’s done it in fewer Tests than anyone other than Muttiah Muralitharan. It’s amply clear that R Ashwin belongs among the very best spin bowlers the game has seen, so there’s little need for anyone to build an elaborate case for his greatness. We know already. So let’s talk, instead, about the beauty of his bowling.Let’s talk about wickets No. 396 and 399. Ollie Pope is the batsman on both occasions, and both times he’s bowled after being beaten on the outside edge. Ashwin does this from around the wicket on day one of the Ahmedabad Test, and from over the wicket on day two.Put the two balls side-by-side, and it’s mesmerising.

There’s a lot to look at, but keep your eyes on Pope for the moment. From his low backlift and his crouched forward press, it’s clear he has the skiddiness of the pink ball on this Motera pitch, and the threat of lbw, in the back of his mind. Then Ashwin delivers, and Pope’s front foot begins to dance. First it strides forward and outwards, and then it changes direction abruptly, sliding backwards towards leg stump. This happens on February 24, and again on February 25.It’s unclear if Pope himself can explain why he does this, twice, but this is what Ashwin’s flight can do to batsmen. They think they know where the ball will land, until it changes direction in midair, upsetting all their calculations.Related

R Ashwin hits back at pitch critics: 'Who defines what a good surface is?'

Ashwin: 'It's been a dreamy ride. It's been a fairy tale'

This puppetry of drift and dip leaves Pope in a severely compromised position. His weight isn’t going towards the ball, and the diagonal drag-back of his front foot opens his body up, causing his bat to slice across the line of the ball in order to block it. And he isn’t close enough to the pitch of the ball to be able to cover for any vagaries in turn. From where he is, Pope can only guess as to which way the ball will go. He plays for turn both times, and it may even be the wise thing to do – assuming there’s any conscious thought involved – because he’s likelier to be bowled or lbw if he’s beaten on the inside edge. But the ball goes on straight, beats the outside edge, beats Pope’s back leg – which slides across to the off side, partly to restore his balance and partly in a desperate attempt to keep him from getting bowled – and hits off stump anyway.ESPNcricinfo LtdThis happens on February 24, from around the wicket, and again on February 25, from over. Even Rishabh Pant’s hands and feet are caught up in this uncanny choreography. It’s an echo of all the other times that Ashwin has gotten the same batsman out in similar fashion on multiple occasions: Kumar Sangakkkara – four times in four innings in his last Test series, three times caught at slip; Kane Williamson – four times in four innings during New Zealand’s 2016 tour of India, bowled or lbw each time; Alastair Cook – bowled in each innings of the 2018 Edgbaston Test, pitching leg and hitting off both times. It’s an illustration of Ashwin’s ability to spot holes in batting technique and his skill in delivering the perfect ball to exploit them. But equally, it’s an illustration of his mastery of spin bowling’s first principles: the ability to give the ball an almighty rip, land it exactly where he wants it to, and to do both those things again and again while cycling through all his variations of pace and trajectory and grip and release.Sometimes there’s a grand plan when you get two balls that look so alike. Sometimes there isn’t. Either way, it’s something to savour, and to talk about for years.

Jaiswal, Rohit, Kohli lead India to 2-1 series win

KL Rahul resorted to spinning the coin with his left hand and finally won India a toss for the first time in their last 21 ODIs. They followed it up with a nine-wicket win to show what a challenge it had been for them to stay competitive and force a decider against South Africa, despite losing both the earlier tosses in this series. The beleaguered Prasidh Krishna began India’s turnaround, bowling Quinton de Kock after a sensational century. Kuldeep Yadav – playing with the dry ball for the first time in the series – then ran through the lower middle order to restrict South Africa to 270, after they would have entertained thoughts of 350 at various points in the innings.

India penalised for slow over-rate

India’s players have been fined 10% of their match fees for their slow over-rate against South Africa in the second ODI in Raipur on December 3.

KL Rahul’s team was ruled to be two overs behind the target in match referee Richie Richardson’s estimation, and the team was penalised in accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC’s code of conduct for players.

The charge against India was levelled by on-field umpires Rod Tucker and Rohan Pandit, third umpire Sam Nogajski, and fourth umpire Jayaraman Madanagopal.

The low target allowed Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal to be measured in the initial overs, as the ball moved for longer and the dew appeared later than in the first two matches. Rohit shepherded Jaiswal in the early parts of his innings as the youngster found his tempo in a new format. However, Rohit didn’t stay long enough to watch him cruise to a maiden ODI hundred. In the end, the match wasn’t as simplistic as “win the toss, win the match” – it ebbed and flowed with a variety of conditions presenting themselves.Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana used the early moisture – perhaps a touch extra, to stop the pitch from drying out in the first innings – beautifully to tie South Africa down. Ryan Rickleton was opening, with Aiden Markram pushed down the order – to No. 5 – in Tony de Zorzi’s absence. Arshdeep took Rickleton’s edge in the first over. Rana followed it up with a maiden. India bowled three maidens in the first eight overs and only two edged boundaries from de Kock’s bat took South Africa to 25 for 1.Quinton de Kock brought up his seventh ODI ton against India•BCCI

The introduction of Prasidh, already under fire in this series, brought South Africa an opportunity to break free. De Kock took a special liking to him, pulling him for two sixes in his first two overs and playing the two shots of the day: an aerial extra-cover drive on the up for a six and one along the ground for four. Prasidh went for 27 in his first two, and runs started to flow in a 113-run stand between de Kock and Bavuma. The latter scored only 48 of those in 67 balls, which was more indicative of the conditions and the quality of bowling. De Kock, on the other hand, was already 63 off 55 at this point. The pitch had settled by now, and Matthew Breetzke took down the part-time spin of Tilak Varma, playing in place of Washington Sundar. By the end of the 26th over, the fifth-bowler combination of Prasidh and Tilak had leaked 56 runs from their five overs. De Kock was well on his way to a seventh century against India in just 23 innings. No one has scored more against India. Nor has any visiting batter scored more than his seven centuries in India.Related

This is when, at 158 for 2, Prasidh started his second spell. His first over went for just two. Rana came on at the other end, with India desperate for a wicket. De Kock hit a four to take South Africa past a run a ball for the first time. In Prasidh’s next, Breetzke tried to get back to dominating him and made an error in judging length. He was out plumb lbw playing back and across the line to a ball hitting top of off. In the same over, Markram ended up chipping one to Virat Kohli, fielding close at short cover.Given the depth in their batting and the need to capitalise on the overs before the extra fielder went out for the last 10 overs, South Africa kept going. The run rate stayed up, but de Kock ended up playing all around a long half-volley from Prasidh, dismissed for 106 off 89 out of a score of 199 for 5 in 32.5 overs.Dewald Brevis and Marco Jansen kept attacking, but the return of Kuldeep brought new challenges. India needed to bowl five overs of spin in the last 14, which could have been tricky. However, Kuldeep was cherishing the dry ball for the first time this series as well as the older ball for the first time in his career, since the bowling side is now allowed to bowl with only one of the two balls after the 34th over.Brevis and Jansen were bullish in their response. They were not willing to play out Kuldeep, the leading wicket-taker in the series despite a predominantly wet ball in hand. When Kuldeep started the second over of this new spell, there had been 19 balls without a boundary. The extra fielder would go out in two overs as well. Aware of a big shot around the corner, Kuldeep kept tossing the ball wide and taking it away. Both of the batters holed out in the same over.Rohit Sharma celebrates with Kuldeep Yadav, who took four wickets•Associated Press

Kuldeep’s wizardry picked up two more wickets – only Adam Zampa has taken more hauls of four or more since Kuldeep’s debut – and Prasidh wiped off the last man.If South Africa had to compete in this defence, they needed early wickets. The ball moved around for Jansen and Lungi Ngidi, but seven wides in the first two overs and the occasional calculated strike from Rohit kept India in touch with the asking rate.Even as Jaiswal struggled, Rohit took the game on, charging and pulling Ngidi for a six and chipping Keshav Maharaj for a four against the turn. His trademark imperious pull made an appearance soon enough. While Jaiswal’s strike rate hovered around 50, Rohit got to his 94th score of 50 or more at a run a ball, buying Jaiswal time.It hasn’t been an ideal scenario for Jaiswal, filling in for the injured captain Shubman Gill. He was obligated to hit out in the first two ODIs as India strived for above-par scored to counter the toss disadvantage, but here, he could use the extra time and post a big score before Gill takes over again. The innings flowed smoothly after he reached 50 off 75 balls. He reached his hundred in just 36 more balls, becoming the sixth batter to be a centurion for India in all three formats. He batted with the two others in this chase. After Rohit fell 25 short of what would have been a 34th ODI hundred, Kohli displayed yet another upgrade to his game: he took his sixes tally to 12 – more than he has ever hit in a series before. He finished unbeaten on 65 off 45, as India won with more than 10 overs to spare.

Man Utd "confident" they'll sign Anderson for £40m less than Forest's asking price

Manchester United believe they can sign Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson for a cut-price fee in 2026.

Man Utd linked with Anderson amid Tuchel praise

Since making the move to the City Ground from Newcastle in 2024, Anderson has gone from strength to strength and is now viewed as one of the best players in the Premier League.

He’s also now a regular on the international stage under Thomas Tuchel, and it looks as if Anderson and Declan Rice will be the Three Lions’ starting midfield duo at the 2026 World Cup.

Tuchel has recently praised Anderson, calling him an elite player. “Anderson is a key player for us at the moment. He is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League, that’s why he is with us and starting for us. He is an elite player with the right attitude and a lot of talent.”

Anderson’s displays have caught the eye of Man Utd, who have been heavily linked with a move for the midfielder, however, they aren’t the only Premier League side who are keen.

Former club Newcastle are thought to have an interest in bringing Anderson back to St James’ Park, whereas Chelsea have also been linked. Now, a new update has emerged over a transfer to Old Trafford and the potential fee involved.

Man Utd “confident” of signing Anderson for £60m

According to CaughtOffside, Man Utd think they can sign Anderson for a bargain fee of just £60m, which is £40m less than Forest’s initial £100m valuation that has been mooted in the media.

Anderson being under contract at the City Ground for another three-and-a-half years could complicate matters, so if Man Utd do snap him up for £60m as they feel they can, it may prove to be a shrewd deal.

The 23-year-old also shares the same agency as United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, who has actually been linked with the Old Trafford exit.

Chelsea's preferred price to sign Ter Stegen with Barcelona braced for imminent bid

The details of the proposal Chelsea are willing to offer for FC Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen have now been revealed.

Robert Sanchez has received his fair share of criticism this season, with the goalkeeper being brandished an early red card in the 2-1 defeat against Manchester United, but he has since returned to form, keeping a clean sheet in the 1-0 victory against Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend.

Speaking after the match, Sanchez said: “I feel confident, I am fit and at my best. I have always felt settled because the club always told me I am No. 1.

“But on a personal level and my performance I have to say yes (this is the most settled he has been at Chelsea).”

However, the Blues continue to be linked with new goalkeepers, with it being revealed they were offered the opportunity to sign Barcelona’s Ter Stegen at the end of October, and there has now been a new update on their pursuit of the German.

Chelsea willing to submit proposal for Ter Stegen

According to a report from Spain, Chelsea are now willing to offer to pay 75% of the Barca shot-stopper’s salary to secure his signature in the coming days, although the loan move would have to wait until the January transfer window opens.

The La Liga club are willing to sanction a departure this winter, with the 33-year-old potentially set to join the Blues on an initial loan deal, before making a permanent move to Stamford Bridge for a fee of €10m (£9m) in the summer.

The veteran goalkeeper would welcome a move to a new club, given that he is keen to receive more game time ahead of the World Cup next summer, with the lack of opportunities at Barcelona jeopardising his chances of being Germany’s starting goalkeeper.

The 44-time Germany international has fallen down the pecking order at the Camp Nou and is yet to make an appearance this season, so it would be understandable if he decides to move on in January, ahead of what could be his final World Cup.

Having established himself at the top level, the £281k-a-week Barcelona man could also be an upgrade on Sanchez, with journalist Graeme Bailey saying: “Ter Stegen is world-class, and if there is a chance to bolster your ranks with a player of this calibre for the second half of the season, I think he is a fascinating option for a number of sides in January.”

The former Borussia Monchengladbach star is vastly experienced in Europe, having made 85 Champions League appearances, while he also knows what it takes to win major trophies, lifting 19 major honours with Barcelona.

As such, Ter Stegen could be a fantastic signing for Chelsea, who arguably need to bring in older players with experience of winning trophies if they are going to become title contenders.

They made one change to the XI from their last league game, bringing in fast bowler Lockie Ferguson for Mark Chapman. Super Kings, meanwhile, went in unchanged. However, just minutes before the scheduled start of play, the stadium was placed under a lightning advisory, and the pitch was covered. After the storm passed, heavy rain followed, leading to the eventual abandonment of the match due to persistent wet weather.Super Kings will now face the winner of the Eliminator – between MI New York and San Francisco Unicorns on Tuesday – in the Qualifier 2.

49ers now convincing coach to drop his wages and join Rangers, they're confident

Rangers could finally be closing in on a new manager and the 49ers have now reportedly set a new timeline in their pursuit of Shanghai Port boss Kevin Muscat.

Rohl drops out of Rangers manager race

It’s been a chaotic international break for those at Ibrox. They’ve watched on as the likes of Kevin Thelwell and the rest of the board have attempted to replace Russell Martin, who they made the shortest-serving manager in the club’s history after sacking him just 123 days in.

It looked as though it could be Steven Gerrard – he was certainly their leading candidate – before the Liverpool legend handed them the most frustrating rejection. And he’s not been the only one to withdraw from contention. As reported by Ben Jacobs, former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has also dropped out of the race to become the next Rangers manager.

It’s the second time that the 36-year-old has been up for the Ibrox job and the second time that the 49ers will be looking elsewhere. Whether they’ll regret not pushing for his signature will be the big question in the coming weeks.

Rohl’s decision has very much left the door wide open for other candidates. The likes of Graham Potter and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have been mentioned in the last week, for example, and may yet receive their chance.

That said, the current favourite to take the job remains Muscat and with the Gers set to return to action this weekend, the Gers have reportedly taken a key step towards his arrival.

Rangers set Muscat timeline

According to Football Insider, the 49ers now want to strike an agreement with Muscat in the next 48 hours. There is reportedly growing confidence at Rangers that the 52-year-old will be the next man to take the reins and talks are advancing, even though it will mean convincing him to take a pay cut.

However, it remains to be seen just when Muscat will take charge. As things stand, he’s still got four Chinese Super League games to play at Shanghai Port, who sit top of the tree and two points clear.

"Brilliant" former assistant to Hansi Flick wants to be Rangers manager – report

He’s eager to get going…

ByTom Cunningham Oct 15, 2025

On course to win silverware and end an era in style, the Rangers manager candidate may not be keen to take the reins until the current Chinese season ends in mid-November.

If that does prove to be the case, then Rangers will have to appoint an interim until Muscat is available next month, with Neil McCann thought to be the likely option. Given where they find themselves in the Scottish Premiership – 11 points behind shock leaders Hearts – more disruption is the last thing that the Gers need.

Nonetheless, Muscat remains the favourite and most likely to take the job now that Rohl has removed himself from contention. After failing to get the job ahead of Philippe Clement in 2023, the former Rangers player could now finally get his chance to step into the Ibrox dugout.

Chelsea are producing a "future Ballon d'Or winner" to rival Yamal

This season feels like a hugely important one for Chelsea.

Enzo Maresca did an excellent job winning the Conference League and securing Champions League football last year, but his side need to take another step forward over the next ten months.

At the very least, the Blues should be looking to win another trophy and stay in the Premier League title race for longer than they did in 24/25.

Fortunately, the team is stronger today and has an array of incredibly talented youngsters coming through, including one who could rival Lamine Yamal in the not-too-distant future.

Lamine Yamal for Barcelona

Chelsea's hotbed of young talents

Their transfer strategy has come in for plenty of criticism over the last few years, but Chelsea now have an abundance of incredible young talent in their squad.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

For example, just this summer, Maresca has been handed one of the most promising defenders in Europe, Jorrel Hato.

The Dutchman is still just 19 years old but made an astounding 111 senior appearances for Ajax before his move last month.

Moreover, he captained the Amsterdam outfit on several occasions and has even won six senior caps for the Netherlands national team.

Likewise, despite turning 21 just last month, Jamie Gittens had already made 107 appearances for Borussia Dortmund before his move to Stamford Bridge.

In those games, the “explosive” Reading-born winger, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, was able to score 16 goals and provide 13 assists, and was described as “England’s best left winger in 2024/25” by Sky Sports’ Dougie Critchley.

Last but by no means least, the West Londoners also got their hands on Alejandro Garnacho.

The former Manchester United ace might be something of a controversial player, but his talent is undeniable, and even though he played in a historically poor Red Devils side last season, he was still able to rack up 21 goal involvements.

Yet, while all three of these youngsters could be superstars for Chelsea, there is another prospect on the club’s books who feels like he could rival Yamal for the Ballon d’Or in the future.

Chelsea's Yamal rival

It’s hardly a controversial opinion to consider Yamal as already being one of the very best players in world football.

After all, the young Spaniard has won the European Championships with his country and La Liga titles with Barcelona, all before even turning 18.

So, if Chelsea have a player who could one day rival him for the very top honours, the youngster in question has to be something really quite special.

Fortunately, from what we have seen so far, and his performances back in Brazil, Estevao looks like the real deal.

The Blues signed the incredibly gifted 18-year-old from Palmeiras in the summer of 2024, but due to his age, he had to wait another year to officially join up with Maresca’s squad.

That extra year in his homeland might have been good for the Franca-born gem, as in just a few appearances for the Blues, he is already looking like the “future Ballon d’Or winner” that respected analyst Ben Mattinson claimed him to be.

For example, he came off the bench and added some much-needed dynamism to proceedings against Crystal Palace, and then when he was tasked with starting again against West Ham United in place of Cole Palmer, he was near unstoppable.

The Hammers seemingly had no way of stopping him, leading to panic every time he decided to take a defender on, which is also how he registered his first official assist for the club.

The dynamic winger is also now a regular face in Brazil squads and scored his first international goal in just his second start against Chile during this international break.

Ultimately, it might take him a season or two to really get up to speed, but Estevao looks like the potentially world-class talent so many expected him to be, and therefore, he could soon be challenging the likes of Yamal for future Ballon d’Ors.

"This fella" – Keown blown away by Arsenal star who outshone Martinelli

Arsenal legend Martin Keown has lavished praise on another player after the Gunners’ dramatic late win away to Athletic Bilbao.

Mikel Arteta’s side opened their Champions League account for the season with a 2-0 victory in Spain on Tuesday evening, courtesy of goals from super subs Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard — emphasising the importance of strength in depth.

The attacking duo have been linked with Arsenal departures regularly even after the summer window closed on September 1, but their presence in the squad was vital as Arsenal kickstarted their European campaign by beating an in-form Bilbao side.

Martinelli’s burst of pace and excellent close control allowed him to get a yard on Bilbao’s defence, after bringing down a clever flick-on from Viktor Gyokeres, before driving through and slotting the ball home from close range.

The Brazilian then set up fellow substitute Trossard for Arsenal’s deflected second after a great run down the left, wrapping up what turned out to be a hard-fought victory at the San Mames.

It was a match-winning performance by the 24-year-old amid the constant criticism and uncertain future hanging over his head, with Arteta reserving special praise after the 90.

While Martinelli’s performance has understandably grabbed most of the headlines, Keown expressed how impressed he is with summer signing Cristhian Mosquera too.

Martin Keown praises Cristhian Mosquera after Arsenal win against Bilbao

The young Spaniard has deputised for the injured William Saliba to great effect, and is currently making the initial £13 million paid for his signature look like an absolute bargain.

Mosquera played at right-back against Leeds, but in the absence of Saliba, the 21-year-old has looked assured and composed at such a young age. His value has reportedly tripled already, with Keown praising Mosquera after Arsenal’s win in Bilbao.

Amid the noise surrounding Noni Madueke’s electric start at Arsenal, the impressive showings of Martin Zubimendi and Gyokeres’ goal return, Mosquera has perhaps gone under the radar.

Cristhian Mosquera to star for Arsenal

According to some reports, Arsenal believe Mosquera could be one of the best in the world in a few years, and if he carries on like this, the centre-back could hit that landmark sooner than anticipated.

The 21-year-old is good with the ball at his feet, able to play out of defence without panicking and is comfortable in multiple positions — whether that be in the middle or as a full-back.

Last season, Mosquera had the highest true tackle success rate out of any La Liga centre-back last season with over 76.7 per cent — which shows just how strong he is in one-on-one duels (Opta).

Still very young, the ex-Valencia sensation will only get better, and from what we’ve seen so far, the sky really is the limit.

Real Madrid the last club standing in European Super League as Barcelona back out of campaign to challenge UEFA and the Champions League

Barcelona have abandoned the European Super League project, leaving Real Madrid isolated in their push to challenge UEFA. The Catalan giants believe UEFA’s Champions League reforms now meet their demands, ending their pursuit of a breakaway competition. The move marks a dramatic shift in stance that leaves Florentino Perez as the last pillar keeping the project alive.

  • Barcelona drop Super League stance after UEFA reforms

According to , Barcelona have decided to distance themselves from the European Super League, believing that the Champions League’s new format addresses many of the concerns that originally pushed them towards the breakaway idea. The Blaugrana are said to be satisfied with increased revenues and structural changes promised by UEFA, and no longer see the need for a rival competition.

Real Madrid left alone in battle against UEFA

The Super League, first unveiled in 2021 by clubs including Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea, collapsed under intense fan backlash and regulatory threats. While English sides swiftly pulled out, Madrid and Barca were among the last to cling to the concept. With Joan Laporta’s club now publicly satisfied with UEFA, Florentino Perez is left as the lone figure still pushing for the controversial tournament.

  • Improved relations with UEFA boost Barcelona’s confidence

Relations between UEFA and Barcelona have warmed in recent months, with Laporta’s administration believing they are being listened to more seriously. Aleksander Ceferin’s appearance in the Montjuic stadium during Barca’s clash with Paris Saint-Germain symbolised that improved relationship. Even though a legal ruling could favour the Super League’s promoters soon, Barcelona are set to let the project fade quietly, using the decision only as leverage to keep UEFA on their toes.

What lies ahead for Barca and Madrid

Barcelona will now shift focus fully back to the pitch, preparing for a difficult away clash against Sevilla following their 2-1 Champions League defeat to PSG. Real Madrid, meanwhile, head into a La Liga clash against Villarreal after thrashing Kairat Almaty 5-0 in Europe. With Barca stepping away, the Super League looks increasingly like a fading dream but Perez’s persistence means the debate over UEFA’s dominance may not disappear anytime soon.
