McCarthy targets Hammers revival

South African striker Benni McCarthy is determined to prove his worth at West Ham United, having struggled during his first few months at Upton Park.

The 32-year-old made just five appearances for the Hammers following his arrival from Blackburn Rovers in January, being hampered by injury and a lack of match fitness.

McCarthy is already back in training and eager to improve, telling the Epping Forest Guardian:"I am very determined and that is why I decided to come back earlier.

"I wanted to make a fresh start. What I couldn't do then, I want to be able to do now. I still have loads to prove to the West Ham fans.

"For me, I am like a new player coming in, because last season I am writing off.

"The injury is completely fine and the weight is back to normal. I have been following my programme since the end of the season.

Clearly no shame as he invites Tottenham move

Luis Fabiano has come out today and told the world that he would like nothing more than to join Tottenham this summer (despite previously dismissing a move a few weeks back) claiming that the North London outfit are a smaller team than Sevilla…does he have no shame?

The Brazilian has attracted many top clubs this summer after producing good performances in the World Cup finals in South Africa earlier this month.

Manchester United, Milan and of course Spurs all expressed their interest in acquiring the striker’s services, after he made it clear that he will be leaving Spain during the summer window. However, with his favoured moves to both Milan and United now looking remote as the days go by, the Brazilian has made a dramatic u-turn and opted for a move to Whit Hart Lane instead. Speaking to ESPN today, the striker stated:

“I must admit it’s only in the last few weeks I have understood just how big Spurs’ ambition is.”

You can’t help but burst out with laughter after reading the striker comments, especially after dismissing the move to Spurs altogether. A few months ago he slated Spurs and their ambitions, now the 29-year-old is praising them because other interests have cooled down. Harry Redknapp will not mind this of course, all the Englishman is concerned about is bringing in the right faces for the club this summer and Fabiano is possibly one of them. Redknapp pinpointed the striker as a possible target this summer which could help the club in their European adventures and of course domestic competitions.

In regards to Fabiano’s latest comments, it’s clear to see that players in today’s modern game have no shame. Footballers love to tout themselves from club to club even if they have already slated or belittled an interested club one week, and want to join them the next. Javier Mascherano is a fine example of a player that does this on a weekly basis. The midfielder is constantly yapping on about how he would love to play for Barcelona or Inter Milan this upcoming season but struggles to remember that he is in fact a Liverpool player. Arsenal’s Andrey Arshavin is another example of a player that clearly wants a move away from the North London outfit, and the only way he’s going to get it is by praising other clubs in the process. Emmanuel Adebayor was also tipped to make a move to A.C Milan before he signed for money-bags Manchester City last season.

Luis Fabiano isn’t the only shameful footballer that has ever readjusted his appraisal of a club in order for a move; in fact it has become somewhat of a trend these days, as shown by the examples above. Fabiano couldn’t obtain his preferred move to either United or Milan this season, so is now settling for second best, which in this case is Spurs. The simple truth is footballers will do anything and everything in order to get what they want, even if it means looking like a complete idiot which Fabiano looks right now.

What do you guys think of players touting for moves?

Adebayor up to his old tricks

Emmanuel Adebayor is one of the most gifted strikers in the Premier League, but he also possesses one of the most difficult personalities in the top flight. The Togolese front man is capable of brilliance and can be unplayable at times; one just has to look at his performance in Manchester City’s 4-2 win over Arsenal at Eastlands last season. In the match Adebayor scored a goal and dominated the Gunner’s defence, but also clashed with Robin van Persie’s head and rushed over to the away end to celebrate in front of the Arsenal fans, almost prompting a full blown riot in the process. Manchester City would have known they were getting this when they signed him, a match winner but also someone that can be a disruptive influence at the club. It has only taken one year at Eastlands before Adebayor is up to his old tricks, and Man City fans will probably not be best pleased with the striker’s recent comments.

Concerned at what he believes will be a lack of first team opportunities at Man City, Adebayor has spoken to Italian newspaper Tuttosport.

He stated “I know there will not be many chances for me and so I am considering the many offers I have received. I will be sorry to leave the Premier League, but in Europe there are other top leagues. Juventus are a great club in which I would like to play for.”

This is not the sort of thing Man City fans or Roberto Mancini will want to hear. If Emmanuel Adebayor is worried about his lack of first team chances, he should be trying 100 per cent and performing to the best of his ability to make sure he is one of the first names on the team sheet. The galling fact for Man City fans is that Adebayor is more than capable of doing this if the inclination is there, but it appears as if it is not.

It is also questionable whether there is justification for Adebayor to be so worried about his place in the team. In fact Man City have already released a statement on Twitter regarding their plans for Adebayor this season.

“Take it from us everyone, despite reports, MCFC has no plans to sell Emmanuel Adebayor; our new no 9 for this season – and thats official.”

If Adebayor needed further encouragement there are other factors as well. As of yet Mancini has not signed a new striker this summer; the move for Inter’s Mario Balotelli now seems to have run out of steam. In the current squad Carlos Tevez is probably the first choice striker, but after that it would most likely be Emmanuel Adebayor. City played with two strikers last season and this duo was the preferred partnership, there is no real reason to think it will be massively different this season. Robinho is unlikely to stay at Man City, whilst Craig Bellamy and Roque Santa Cruz are also in the transfer frame.

Emmanuel Adebayor’s words are childish and they betray a distinct lack of team spirit in the player. Adebayor will have plenty of chances to play this season, but it is not up to the manager to guarantee him a place in the first eleven. Adebayor will need to perform and exert himself if he wants to play this season, but this should be taken as standard and not an optional extra as it appears Adebayor perceives it. The fact is that many Arsenal fans were not too sad to see Adebayor go to Man City last summer, as although he had doubtless ability, he also had a bad attitude that City fans are now bearing witness to.

The kick-start to Tottenham’s spending spree?

With the tie delicately hanging in the balance, tonight sees Tottenham take on Young Boys for the right to play in this season’s Champions League group stages. A 3-2 defeat in Berne leaves Harry Redknapp’s men with a difficult but ultimately manageable task this evening at White Hart Lane to overcome their Swiss challengers. But if Tottenham do manage to qualify tonight, will it spark a spending spree which so far has failed to materialise?

Harry Redknapp has been uncharacteristically quiet this transfer window, only bringing in young Brazilian midfielder Sandro from Internacional and former Arsenal and Chelsea defender William Gallas to White Hart Lane. Despite the lack of transfer activity, Tottenham have been linked with a whole host of players and confirmation of Champions League football by beating Young Boys would prove a huge draw to some of Tottenham’s potential transfer targets. In recent months, Tottenham have been linked to some Europe and the Premier League’s top players including Steven Pienaar, Ashley Young, Scott Parker, Loic Remy, Lassana Diarra and Luis Fabiano but have failed to make a move on any of these players.

This is because if Redknapp does choose to open the Tottenham chequebook, he has to be sure that the player or players that he does potentially buy will add value to the team and I’m not sure that many of the players linked with Tottenham do. For example, do Tottenham really need another winger in Ashley Young when Aaron Lennon and Gareth Bale are arguably the two most exciting wingers in the Premier League? Similarly, is Lassana Diarra really such an upgrade on the existing midfield corps at Tottenham? I have my doubts.

One player who I believe would be worthy of spending money on to bring to White Hart Lane is Sevilla and Brazil striker Luis Fabiano. Since moving to Seville in 2005, Fabiano has established himself as one of the world’s most deadly strikers. He has scored 95 goals in 191 appearances for the Spanish club, along with an impressive haul of 28 goals in 43 appearances for the Brazilian national team. A move for Luis Fabiano would provide Tottenham with a proven goalscorer at club and international level and would add some much needed firepower to a stuttering attack.

Tottenham’s strikers have been misfiring so far this season; Jermain Defoe has been struggling for form, Peter Crouch hasn’t scored enough goals and Robbie Keane is low on confidence and being linked with a move away. Due to these concerns, signing Fabiano would be a wise move for Tottenham should they qualify for the group stages of the Champions League.

However, Tottenham must be cautious in their approach to spending their guaranteed windfall should they qualify. There is no guarantee that the players they bring into the team will ensure that Tottenham will qualify for next season’s Champions League so Spurs must be careful in spending big and promising too much to the players in case they don’t make it next year.

Do you think Harry will spend big if Tottenham qualify or do Spurs already have a good enough squad to play Champions League football?

Sol Campbell retains England hopes

Veteran defender Sol Campbell still believes that he can force his way back into contention for an England spot by impressing for Newcastle United.

The 34-year-old has not featured for his country since November 2007, but insists that he could still do a job for Fabio Capello's side.

He told The Journal:"I haven't come to Newcastle as a last hurrah and I still believe I have what it takes to play for England.

"I still have the passion, the fire in my belly. I want to win. But you just can't do anything about it anymore, so I am not going to fight.

"I am going to fight on the pitch for Newcastle and if it comes to the stage where someone says 'can you fight for England' then I'll fight for England.

"I am not going to go on about it. It is just not worth it.

"If people don't like you, people don't like you. It's as simple as that. I think it all comes down to who is at the helm and the people behind the associations.

"They are going to make all the decisions and also the mentality of the nation. You go to Italy and defenders and goalkeepers can go on and on and on really.

"You can roll the names off of the guys who have played well into their late 30s at international level, so I think it sometimes goes down to mentality.

Caption Competition: Van der Vaart faces up to an old foe

When Rafael van der Vaart signed for Tottenham on transfer deadline day there was one man he might not have been looking forward to coming up against in the Premier League. Howard Webb was in charge of the 2010 World Cup final in South Africa and in the heated game the Dutch were unhappy with the English referee’s performance, although The Netherlands can count themselves lucky that Nigel de Jong wasn’t sent off – incidentally the player that van der Vaart came on for. Webb was officiating in his first Premier League match since the World Cup at The Hawthorns as Spurs drew with West Brom and largely kept his cards in his pocket on this occasion. Here are Webb and van der Vaart shaking hands at the start of the game, but what pleasantries are they sharing?

Fergie content despite another away draw

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson declared himself content with the point gained up from a 'hard-fought' goalless draw with Sunderland.

United found themselves under the cosh in the first half at the Stadium of Light and had to rely on goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar to keep the Black Cats at bay in the closing moments of a difficult afternoon in the north-east.

The Red Devils have drawn all four of their league games away from Old Trafford this season, but afterwards Ferguson suggested it was a point gained rather than two lost for his side.

"Sunderland had the most chances in the game and I have to say we were fantastic defensively," he declared.

"That's the area in which we have been leaking goals and throwing games away this season, so I am pleased with that.

"It was a very determined Sunderland team, their home record this season has been very, very good, so I am not pleased but I am satisfied."

Meanwhile, Ferguson admitted he was becoming concerned with United's failure to win away from home following draws with Fulham, Everton, Bolton and now Sunderland.

He added:"It's a concern, the first three.

"I can't class today's as a disappointment because we had to battle to get the point today. But we have thrown the other three away.

"We had no attacking purpose in the first 25 minutes of the match. It wasn't until towards the end of the first half that we got any semblance of keeping possession of the ball.

"In the second half we did a lot better, there was more threat by us, but they had chances from set-pieces."Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email

Mark Noble faces four-week lay-off

Rock-bottom West Ham United have been rocked by the news that influential midfielder Mark Noble could be sidelined for a month after undergoing surgery for appendicitis.

The 23-year-old was advised to have the operation after complaining of abdominal pains and was taken to hospital to have his appendix removed during an hour-long procedure on Monday evening.

Noble has started all ten of the Hammers' Premier League matches so far this season, finding the net with penalties against Bolton Wanderers and Wolves.

Meanwhile, boss Avram Grant is convinced that his team's recent improved form will soon start to be converted into victories.

He told the club's official website:"No-one is happy with our position but, at this stage of the season, one win can make the picture look so much different.

"We are only in November and we know we can do it with the matches we have coming up. Many things were very positive at Arsenal. The fighting spirit was good and the players can be proud of the way they played against a very good team.

"We have a long way to go. We will pick out the many positives from that, work hard in training this week and I know we will take points. We had a tough game in midweek but we deserved to win and even though some played extra time and some were just coming back from injury, they kept going.

"I am pleased with their effort. It was just unfortunate there was no time to respond. We tried but from their point of view they scored in the perfect moment. Arsenal are a very good team but we did a very good job tactically."Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email

What to do with Owen Hargreaves?

Trudging off down the Old Trafford tunnel after completing less than 5 minutes against Wolves on Saturday, it was hard not to feel sorry for Owen Hargreaves. Making only his second appearance since September 2008 for Manchester United, his other being a 93rd minute introduction against Sunderland towards the tail-end of last season, Hargreaves pulled up, having just crossed from the right, holding his hamstring. Having made only 39 appearances in all competitions over four seasons for Manchester United, and with his contract up for renewal next summer, is it time for Hargreaves to call it a day, or can the 29 year-old force his way back, not necessarily into United’s team, but into football in general?

The forlorn figure, clutching his hamstring, framed by the Old Trafford tunnel, can be placed in stark contrast to the man who was a star performer for England at the 2006 World Cup. His performances that summer in Germany secured his £17m transfer from Bayern Munich to Manchester United in July 2007, and all seemed to be going well, with Hargreaves regularly starting in a team that went on to win both the Champions League and Premier League in his first season at the club. Problems began to occur, however, when, at the start of the 2008-09 season, the England midfielder decided to get a recurring knee problem operated on, and has barely been seen on a football pitch since.

With Sir Alex Ferguson coming out and stating that he thinks Hargreaves’ problem may, in fact, be more mental than physical, this is a worrying sign. It is one thing coming back from a long term injury in terms of being physically fit, but it is an entirely different entity coming back and being psychologically ready. Perhaps Hargreaves should take a leaf out of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s book.

The Manchester United legend was also blighted by injury, and, like Hargreaves, Sir Alex Ferguson stood by him throughout his recuperation. But eventually the Norwegian succumbed to his fragile physical state, and is now employed elsewhere at the club, as the reserve team manager. Having signed his last contract as a player with the club in 2006, Solskjaer, knowing his days as a player were numbered, stipulated in it that he wanted to develop his coaching awards with the club and made his move into reserve team management in the summer of 2008. So with his 30th birthday fast approaching and his contract at United running out in the summer, should Hargreaves follow Solskjaer into coaching?

It is highly unlikely that Ferguson will offer Hargreaves a renewed contract unless he can prove his fitness, and fast. So if he was that way inclined, and wanted to remain at Old Trafford, signing a short-term contract with a view to complete coaching badges would be a deal that should satisfy both parties. The dilemma for Hargreaves is perhaps a similar one that Kieron Dyer faces at West Ham; if their parent clubs aren’t going to offer them a new contract, will they pass a medical at another side?

Although Hargreaves may wish to continue playing football, he has to think realistically about his options and critically assess his own ability to continue playing, both mentally and physically. Despite having not featured over the last two seasons, he will be a great loss to both Manchester United and England, and with his experience, he could yet serve both club and country very well by taking the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer route into coaching.
