In Focus: West Ham need more experience than Marko Grujic would offer them

According to ESPN FC, West Ham United have expressed an interest in signing Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic, who is rated at €5m (approximately £4.5m) according to Transfermarkt, on loan until the end of the season.

What’s the word, then?

Well, ESPN FC says that the Irons, along with Premier League rivals Huddersfield Town and Championship side Aston Villa are all keen on the Serbia international, with Reds boss Jurgen Klopp said to be open to him leaving on a temporary basis in order to play regularly.

ESPN FC says that the 21-year-old’s potential destination will be the one where he is guaranteed to play the most, meaning that he would need to be a regular fixture in the middle of the park for David Moyes’ men if they were to bring him to the London Stadium.

Grujic signed for the Merseyside in a £5.1m deal from Red Star Belgrade in 2015, the report adds that Klopp is still confident that he has a long-term future at Anfield despite his lack of game time this term.

How has he done this season?

As we just mentioned, even though Grujic is obviously highly-regarded by the club and his manager, he has only made six appearances in all competitions for Liverpool this term, with only one of those being starts and the other five coming as brief substitute outings.

The Serbian midfielder did play the full 90 minutes in the 2-0 defeat against Leicester City in the EFL Cup back in September, while his most recent appearance for the first-team came late on in the 5-1 win against Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League last month.

The 20-year-old has also made four appearances in the Premier League 2 for the U23 side, and he scored one and assisted another from a defensive midfield role in an impressive 3-1 win away against Manchester United in October.

Would he be a good signing for West Ham?

He certainly could be, yes.

Moyes is known to be looking to strengthen his midfield options this month, and adding a tall and strong player in the middle of the park seems to be a potential preference.

Standing at 6ft 3in and with good ability in the air, Grujic may well fit the ball of what the Scot is looking for and would add some steel in central areas.

However, given that the Irons are potentially facing a relegation battle this season, the east London outfit may look to add a more experienced player to their squad instead.

Leeds United fans are excited by potential deadline day deal for Roberts

As reported by The Express, Leeds United are pursuing a deadline day deal for West Bromwich Albion forward Tyler Roberts.

The paper say that the club are in advanced talks to bring him to Elland Road and that he could complete a medical and sign before tonight’s 11pm deadline.

The deal is reported to be worth around £2.5m, rising to £4m.

Thomas Christiansen’s side are still chasing a play-off place in the second-tier but could do with adding some attacking firepower to their squad, with most of the teams above them having scored more goals so far this season.

Roberts, who has only just turned 19, has spent the first half of this term on loan at League One side Walsall, scoring five goals and providing four assists in 19 appearances.

Given his age and potential, Leeds fans are excited by the signing, believing he’ll prove to be an excellent acquisition in the months and years to come.

Pundit calls for West Ham United’s Masuaku to be hit with 20-match ban

West Ham United full-back Arthur Masuaku added insult to injury on Saturday during the team’s FA Cup match against Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium.

David Moyes’s side had their dreams of progressing in the competition crushed by the League One club.

Will Grigg scored twice – once from the penalty spot – to stun the Premier League outfit.

During the game, the Hammers suffered a blow when Pedro Obiang was stretchered off with an injury.

The East London outfit also went down to 10 men when Masuaku was given a straight red card for appearing to spit at Wigan’s Nick Powell.

After the match, Moyes did not have any hesitation in criticising his player and insisted that he and the club will accept the punishment that comes Masuaku’s way.

According to The Express, the Scotsman told reporters:

“It was despicable. He will deserve everything he gets and he will get something he deserves from us. It’s unacceptable.”

The publication adds that former Tottenham Hotspur player Chris Waddle demanded that the Frenchman be given a “20-month ban”.

Liverpool fans believe there’s no-one better in England right now than Mohamed Salah

Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur played out a dramatic English Premier League classic on Sunday, drawing 2-2 at Anfield. It was billed as the biggest match-up in the top flight this weekend and it didn’t disappoint, with both sides giving it their all to secure all three points in the race to finish in the top four.It appeared to be Liverpool’s day when Mohamed Salah scored his second of the afternoon in injury time, but a Harry Kane penalty moments later was enough to secure a point for the Reds’ visitors, after Victor Wanyama had banged in goal of the season contender to equalise initially.Salah’s second was every bit as beautiful, but for different reasons, jinking through the Spurs defence to chip the ball over Hugo Lloris from close range. The Egyptian international has now scored an unbelievable 28 goals in all competitions for Liverpool this season, also creating nine assists. It’s a contribution that has many supporters believing he is the best player in the Premier League right now and it’s hard to disagree despite the way Manchester City are tearing things up as a collective unit.Fans took to Twitter to pay tribute to his ability in the wake of another supreme performance…

Casemiro the missing piece in Jose Mourinho’s Man United jigsaw

It’s no coincidence that Alexis Sanchez and Paul Pogba are both yet to play well when fielded in the same Manchester United starting XI. While the main focus has been on the latter’s struggles upon being moved into a deeper midfield role alongside Nemanja Matic, the real problem for Jose Mourinho has been fitting all of United’s attacking talents into the same side without compromising the shape and functionality he implores from his teams.

But in some ways, the response to Pogba’s last two performances has been something of an overreaction. Fitting Sanchez into the team in a way that gets the best out of not only him but also United’s other key players was always going to be a working progress, and with the title race already over Mourinho can afford to experiment in the Premier League.

[ad_pod ]

That being said, it’s clear Pogba lacks the discipline to sit alongside Matic and in truth, that’s a waste of what he offers the Red Devils going forward – namely, goals, creativity and penetrative dynamism from midfield. There’s been plenty of talk of United switching to a 4-3-3 to put Pogba in his preferred left central midfield slot, however it would likely sit easier with Mourinho to bring in another holding player to partner Matic and allow Pogba to roam just in front of them.

And in that regard, United’s first port of call should be Real Madrid’s Casemiro. Some argue the Brazilian enforcer is little more than a decent player doing a simple job in an incredibly good team, but the statistics speak for themselves and Casemiro’s ball-winning ability is fantastic – something which was particularly evident last night as Real Madrid recorded a thrilling 3-1 win over PSG in the Champions League.

Indeed, the 20-cap Brazilian recorded an incredible seven tackles and six interceptions last night, winning the ball back 13 times, but he was economical on the ball as well – completing two dribbles and 90% of his passes.

And bringing in a player like Casemiro might well arrest the biggest criticism of Mourinho; with such a sturdy presence in midfield, especially alongside another in Matic, he can afford United’s creative talents the freedom they’ve often lacked during the Portuguese’s first 18 months at Old Trafford.

Would Real Madrid allow their unsung hero to leave this summer? That remains to be seen but it’s clear Real Madrid need something of a revamp after a disappointing domestic season, and club president Florentino Perez has a knack of favouring style over substance in the transfer market. It certainly wouldn’t be a shock if Perez cashed in on Casemiro – who Transfermarkt value at £36million – to fund a move for another attacking player.

So, United fans, would you back a summer swoop for the 25-year-old? Let us know by voting below…

Everton fans slam Allardyce over comments about job speculation

Not long after Sam Allardyce took over as Everton manager in November, fans began to warm to the experienced coach.

The 63-year-old helped steer the Merseyside outfit away from the relegation zone, but in recent weeks, results have been unwanted.

The Toffees have picked up just two wins in their last 10 Premier League matches, leaving them ninth in the table, seven points above the relegation zone.

The tide has now turned and many supporters are keen for the club to part ways with Allardyce.

During his press conference ahead of Everton’s trip to Burnley on Saturday, the former Sunderland boss was asked about his future.

In rather bullish fashion, Allardyce admitted that he was surprised by the rumours surrounding his position at the club.

A recent report in the Daily Star claimed that Everton’s majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri is considering potential replacements for Allardyce this summer.

Southampton fans react to Hughes’s first training session as manager

There has been a quick turnaround at Southampton, with Mark Hughes being appointed manager until the end of the season.

The Welshman, who played for the Saints during a spell in his career, has taken over from Mauricio Pellegrino.

The coastal club made the decision on Monday night to part company with the Argentine after he had guided the team to just five wins in 30 Premier League matches.

Hughes had been out of work since January when he was sacked by Stoke City after the club fell into the relegation zone.

Now, the experienced coach is in another battle for survival as Southampton reside just one point above the dreaded drop with eight games left to play.

Before Hughes was hired, a large majority of supporters were not welcome to the idea of the appointment.

On Thursday, the new manager put the players through their paces in his first training session, and judging by the photos snapped, he was thoroughly enjoying it.

Southampton fans have since been posting their reactions to the tweet.

Tottenham Hotspur fans confident Kane will still win Golden Boot

Tottenham Hotspur are expected to be without Harry Kane until April due to an ankle injury.

The club’s star player suffered ligament damage during last weekend’s 4-1 victory over Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.

Kane has been in stellar form this season having scored 35 goals in all competitions and reached a landmark 100th Premier League strike earlier in the campaign.

The North London outfit expect the striker to be back on the training pitch by April, but they will have to cope without him until then.

Erik Lamela could end up joining the attack against Swansea City in this weekend’s FA Cup quarter-final in place of Kane.

Given that the England international will be on the sidelines for a handful of weeks, his quest for the Premier League Golden Boot could hit a snag.

As it stands, Kane is level on 24 goals with Liverpool star Mohamed Salah, which means that the 24-year-old could be overtaken.

It sounds as though the forward will return before the end of the season, so there is still a chance that he will earn his third Golden Boot in a row, and fans think that it is possible.

Some Rangers fans not convinced they should sign Russell Martin on a permanent basis

After another damaging defeat in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday, Rangers fans are again looking ahead to a new transfer window and thinking about what sort of team they want to see on the pitch next season.

It could be another summer of transition for the Ibrox side with Graeme Murty’s interim management of the club due to come to an end when the season ends and there’s no word whether he’ll be appointed permanently.

With a number of current first team players currently on loan deals, there’ll also be decisions to be made on who they should sign permanently and who should be sent back to their parent clubs.

One player in that boat is defender Russell Martin, on loan from Norwich City, who this week spoke about his desire to stay at Ibrox beyond his short-term spell.

While some fans are eager to see that happen, others are less convinced, believing he is below the standard required if they are to compete for major honours next season.

Leeds United fans take aim at O’Kane following defeat to Fulham

Leeds United’s hopes of reaching the playoffs look to be a distant dream after they suffered a fourth defeat in six Championship games.

Paul Heckingbottom’s side were beaten 2-0 by Fulham on Tuesday night, with Kevin McDonald and Aleksandar Mitrovic getting on the scoresheet at Craven Cottage.

As it stands, the Whites sit 13th in the standings, 10 points adrift of the playoff places with six games to play.

On Tuesday night, the visiting side struggled to impose a serious threat on the goal, creating just two shots on target, according to BBC Sport.

In total, the team had nine attempts to score, but failed to convert any of them, and Heckingbottom’s men were also unable to dominate on the ball as they had just 40% possession overall.

Eunan O’Kane struggled to make an impression as he got through 23 minutes before being hauled off the pitch with a groin strain that hampered him earlier in the season.

The Republic of Ireland international has not been a favourite of the supporters for some time now, and the criticism continued following his brief appearance against Fulham

After the match, Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Phil Hay mentioned the 27-year-old while tweeting updates from Heckingbottom’s post-match press conference.

In response, the fans were not hugely complimentary about O’Kane.
