Sheikh Jassim makes second Manchester United offer

Sheikh Jassim has made a second offer to take control at Manchester United, Sky Sports report.

The Lowdown: Slight delay

Jassim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe have been the front runners when it comes to a complete takeover from the Glazers, with both holding Old Trafford talks earlier this month.

However, both missed the deadline to make a second offer for the club on Wednesday in an incredible development, asking for an extension from the Raine Group in New York. That was granted, with Ratcliffe needing less than 24 hours to place his revised bid for United. It went relatively quiet when it came to Jassim’s second bid, but there has now been a development.

The Latest: Second offer

Sky Sports provided an update regarding Jassim and United in the last 24 hours. They said that a new offer has now been submitted, describing it as ‘news that Manchester United fans have been waiting for’.

‘Now the news that Manchester United fans we know have been waiting for and that is that Sheikh Jassim, the Qatari bid, a new bid has now been submitted to buy Manchester United.

‘It went in overnight, the deadline for the second bid was 9pm on Wednesday, an extension was granted. We knew that Sir Jim Ratcliffe had submitted a second bid on Thursday – now we know that Jassim has followed suit.’

The Verdict: Now we wait

It looks as if it is now down to the Glazers to provide feedback to Jassim, Ratcliffe and other parties who have made Old Trafford bids, so it could be an interesting few months.

Fabrizio Romano has stated that Jassim and his group remain confident as they believe their bid is the best one for the club, fans and local community. He also seemingly has a marquee transfer on his radar, should he take over, with Jassim thought to be a huge fan of Jude Bellingham.

That might come as music to Erik ten Hag’s ears, with the manager after a midfielder and a forward this summer, but in regards to a takeover, Jassim may have to remain patient for now.

Man City interested in Chelsea man Chilwell

Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell is the subject of ‘genuine interest’ from Manchester City ahead of a potential move during the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Chilwell not always a regular

The 26-year-old has suffered a frustrating season for the Blues overall, not always managing to make himself an important part of Graham Potter’s plans and dealing with injury issues.

Chilwell has only actually started eight Premier League matches in 2022/23 to date, with another seven appearances coming his way as a substitute, with a serious hamstring injury earlier in the campaign also not helping matters.

Marc Cucurella has often been preferred on the left-hand side, starting 18 times in the league, and the Englishman has a battle on his hands moving forward. It could even be that an exit from Stamford Bridge materialises this summer, with a new update suggesting that that could end up being the case. The Latest: Man City interested

According to The Athletic’s Simon Johnson, there is ‘genuine interest’ from City regarding a move for Chilwell at the end of the season, as Pep Guardiola looks to bring in a new left-back to replace Joao Cancelo.

It is stated that the reigning Premier League champions were keen on signing him back in 2020, prior to him eventually joining Chelsea instead.

The Verdict: A worry for Blues

While Chilwell hasn’t been a regular starter for the Blues this season, losing him would still be a blow this summer, given the overall quality he possesses.

Thomas Tuchel described the England international as ‘very important’ during his time as Chelsea manager and he possesses defensive nous and attacking quality that few other left-backs in the country do.

Chilwell is now a 17-cap England international, and having only turned 26 years of age back in December, his peak years may well still be ahead of him.

Cucurella hasn’t exactly enjoyed a standout first season at Chelsea and it could even be argued that Chilwell has the higher ceiling moving forward – they both have two league assists this season, despite the latter playing far less, for example –  further showing why the club would be wise to keep hold of him this summer.

The lure of City can be great for any player, however, given Guardiola’s reputation as arguably the world’s greatest manager and the team’s constant likelihood of silverware, so it would be hard to begrudge Chilwell a move there, especially if he isn’t playing enough in west London.

Liverpool: Mount deal ‘being discussed’

Liverpool are in talks with Premier League rivals Chelsea over a deal for Mason Mount, according to BBC pundit Stan Collymore.

The Lowdown: Mount keen to join

The Blues playmaker has entered the final 18 months of his contract at Stamford Bridge and it’s likely that he’ll be on his way out this summer after rejecting an offer to extend his stay.

The Reds have been heavily linked with an interest in the 24-year-old, with reports suggesting that they are confident that an agreement can be reached.

Football Insider have since claimed that the England international is a huge admirer of Jurgen Klopp and would be keen to make the switch to Anfield.

The Latest: Collymore’s comments

Speaking exclusively to CaughtOffside, Collymore revealed that Liverpool and Chelsea are now in direct contact regarding a deal for Mount. He said:

“I’ve been told by two very reliable people, one of which being a person who knows Mason Mount personally, that his rumoured move to Liverpool this summer is very much on.

“It’s already being discussed within both clubs. There is a lot still to decide though, particularly at Chelsea. There will be a lot of outgoings and probably some more incomings so a lot will depend on what the club decides to do but the fact they’re already talking about the possibility of letting Mount go says a lot.”

The Verdict: Splash the cash

Mount has got all of the creative qualities that Klopp looks for in his attacking midfielders so Liverpool should splash the cash to secure his services this summer.

The Portsmouth-born talent has clocked up 70 goal contributions in 192 appearances at the Bridge (prior to today’s game vs Leeds), ranking in the 92nd percentile for progressive passes.

The Nike-sponsored star has also operated in five different positions this season so would be a versatile option for the German boss to have in the building.

Naby Keita, James Milner, Arthur Melo and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will all be out of contract at the end of the season so Mount would be the perfect midfield reinforcement.

Aston Villa eyeing Nico Williams move

Aston Villa appear to be preparing a big summer move for Athletic Bilbao forward Nico Williams.

The Lowdown: Quiet January

NSWE promised Unai Emery a ‘huge’ winter window budget after he took over from Steven Gerrard, but it was a relatively quiet January window in the Midlands.

Full-back Alex Moreno and teenage forward Jhon Duran arrived at the club relatively early in the month, with no late drama in the final days of the window.

A move for Williams was mooted, and it looks as if he is still a player of serious interest to Emery and Co after reports on February 1 said they could re-enter the chase in the summer.

The Latest: Williams move?

A major Spanish outlet has now shared a story in the last 48 hours regarding Villa and Williams.

They claim that the club decided to postpone a move for Williams until the summer, where Villa, and therefore owners NSWE, ‘will once again have a good handful of millions to finalise’ a transfer.

The Verdict: One to watch

Williams, described as ‘incredible’ by his brother, Inaki Williams, is primarily a right winger and is still just 20 years of age. He appears to be a star in the making, though, with his Transfermarkt valuation doubling to €25m since June, so he could be a player to keep an eye on over the coming months.

The Spain international has contributed to 12 goals in 25 appearances for Bilbao this season and as been their fourth-best performer, as per WhoScored, so could be a real shrewd signing by Villa, who appear to be preparing the funds to secure his services.

Liverpool given boost in Bellingham pursuit

Liverpool have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Jude Bellingham, as the midfielder has no plans of extending his contract with Borussia Dortmund.

The Lowdown: Liverpool targeting Bellingham

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has recently claimed that the England international is Jurgen Klopp’s ‘top priority’ to bolster his midfield, although he added that the race is ‘very much open’ due to the interest of Real Madrid and Manchester City.

The 19-year-old’s contract with Dortmund is set to expire in June 2025, so the Bundesliga giants have no pressing need to sell him in January, but there will soon come a point when they need to begin thinking about cashing in.

The Latest: Bellingham preparing to leave?

According to Football Insider, the midfielder has no intention of signing a new contract to remain at Signal Iduna Park, despite his club being set to offer him a new contract.

It is claimed that this is a huge ‘boost’ for his potential suitors across the continent, with both Liverpool and Man City pushing hard to secure his signature.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/liverpool-transfer-news-and-rumours/” title=”Liverpool Transfer News and Rumours” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/cropped-2021-03-07T155652Z_1459311687_UP1EH3718ASBK_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LIV-FUL-REPORT.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Get it done

Liverpool are in dire need of a new option in midfield, considering that Jamie Carragher expressed concern about Fabinho’s form earlier this season, and that captain Jordan Henderson – while a fantastic servant to the club – is now 32.

That’s not to mention that the trio of Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will all be out of contract at the end of June as things stand.

There is perhaps no better midfielder that Klopp could bring in than Bellingham, given just how impressive he has been for Dortmund at such a young age. The 2021 Kopa Trophy runner-up has weighed in with ten goals and four assists in 23 games so far this season, an unbelievable return from central midfield.

Hailed as ‘sensational’ by Gary Lineker, the starlet has also captained Dortmund, becoming the youngest player ever to do so, an indicator that he has the leadership qualities to be a long-term successor for Henderson to go alongside his evident ability on the ball.

It will be difficult to win the race for the Englishman’s signature given the firm level of interest in him and the unlikelihood of the Reds achieving Champions League football for 2023/24. However, Klopp will now be hoping for a much-improved second half of the season so that Liverpool will remain an attractive proposition in the summer.

Manchester United have scouted Goncalo Ramos

Manchester United scouts have been watching Benfica forward Goncalo Ramos ahead of a potential move in 2023, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Lowdown: Ramos’ season so far

Ramos, labelled as an ‘incredible talent’ by football content creator Jacob Schneider, has enjoyed a free-scoring season so far for club and country.

The 21-year-old, who can play as a centre-forward, second striker or attacking midfielder, has scored 18 goals and registered seven assists in 27 club appearances.

He also featured at the World Cup, scoring a remarkable hat-trick and registering an assist in a 6-1 Round of 16 victory over Switzerland.

The Latest: Romano’s claim

Romano touched on United’s search for a new marquee attacker in his daily briefing for Caught Offside on Wednesday. The reliable reporter said that Red Devils ‘are monitoring many strikers’, although nothing is expected to happen in the final days of the January window.

One of those forwards is thought to be Ramos, with United scouts watching the Portugal international in action during the Champions League.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-man-utd-news-10/” title=”Latest Man Utd news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Summer target?

Tottenham’s Harry Kane and Napoli’s Victor Osimhen are also named in Romano’s briefing, however, Ramos could be a shrewd alternative, assuming Kane and Osimhen are above the Benfica man in the Old Trafford wish-list.

The Nike-sponsored forward has gone from strength to strength in recent months and now holds a career-high €30m Transfermarkt valuation, so is likely to cost less than the aforementioned pair despite being at the peak of his powers.

You’d expect he still has further room for improvement on his already impressive game before hitting his prime, so in the long run, you could make an argument for Ramos being a smart signing due to the fact he is already finding the back of the net with ease and is younger than Kane and Osimhen.

Rangers eyeing Keanu Baccus transfer

Rangers are reportedly weighing up a potential January transfer move for St Mirren midfielder Keanu Baccus.

The Lowdown: Baccus’ season so far

Having joined the Saints during the previous summer transfer window from Western Sydney, the 24-year-old has gone on to make 17 appearances for the club across the SPFL and the Scottish League Cup.

The midfielder also appeared in all four of Australia’s World Cup games during the recent tournament in Qatar.

Now that the January transfer window is set to open on Sunday, Baccus has found himself already being linked with a move away from St Mirren.

The Latest: Rangers eyeing Baccus

According to a recent report from The Scottish Sun, Rangers have been scouting Baccus and see him as a potential target for the January transfer window.

The report also adds that St Mirren are not likely to stand in Baccus’ way to leave the club if a suitable transfer offer comes in for him.

The Verdict: A useful signing for Rangers

With 16 league appearances under his belt this season, the Australian has shown how much of a capable midfield figure he is on and off the ball.

For example, as well as scoring two goals and having the third-highest number of shots at goal (23) at St Mirren, Baccus also has the second-highest number of successful tackles (20) and third-highest number of interceptions (21).

His overall performances have earned the midfielder, who has been described as being “all-action” on the pitch by journalist Joel Sked, a season rating of 6.67/10 from WhoScored, making him the fourth-highest rated player in the Saints squad.

Taking all of this into account, Baccus could certainly be a useful addition to Michael Beale’s squad given the talent he as and the experience he has of playing in the SPFL.

Moving forward, if the Saints are open to selling their summer recruit in January, the Gers should definitely see what it would take financially to secure his signature.

Liverpool still want Jude Bellingham

Liverpool remain interested in signing the man who every elite club seems to be after…

What’s the latest?

That’s according to transfer insider Dean Jones, who claims that the Reds will have full faith in their ability to tempt Jude Bellingham to Anfield after Dharmesh Sheth had claimed he was their “number one target”.

Despite the riches of Manchester City likely to put them ahead in the race, Jones told GIVEMESPORT:

“Man City might consider themselves with the greatest chance of signing him right now in their eyes, but Liverpool believe that they should have a great chance, too, and that they just have to go all out and put in front of him why they think he should join Liverpool.”

Following his fine performances in Qatar, his price tag has since risen to a reported €150m (£130m).

Thiago upgrade

Although he has quickly captured the imagination of fans from the Merseyside club, Spanish maestro Thiago is not getting any younger.

Having only joined in 2020 at the age of 29, it was clear this deal was one to bring instant success rather than pin down their midfield for years.

That could not be more contrasted to a potential deal to sign Bellingham, with the 19-year-old sure to dominate in the engine room for at least the next decade.

Whilst the Spaniard offers a more calming presence in midfield, outlined in his tackles ranking in the top 9% as well as his pass completion rate in the top 7%, the England international has shown he is far more all-action.

Despite this, he can still occupy nearly any role needed of him, which is outlined in his varied skillset.

Whilst ranking in the top 6% for dribbles completed, he also records 2.39 tackles per game. In the same vein, whilst he ranks in the top 4% for non-penalty goals, his pass completion rate averaged out at 90% at the World Cup.

There is truly nothing he cannot do, and he has more than earned the title of “a generational talent” bestowed upon him by Rafael Honigstein.

What marks him as an upgrade on Thiago is not just his input, of which his 7.38 Sofascore rating from their domestic leagues dwarfs that of the 31-year-old’s 7.15, but due to his goalscoring nature, he can actually take games by the scruff of the neck and drag his team through.

This was no greater exemplified than in his four goals in consecutive Champions League games this season, as he has stepped up in the absence of Erling Haaland.

For all his talents, the former Bayern Munich midfielder simply cannot change a game as Bellingham can.

As such, this transfer could mark a huge improvement that could lock down their midfield for years to come.
