LPL terminates contract with Dambulla Thunders following owner's arrest

The Lanka Premier League (LPL) has terminated its contract with Dambulla Thunders, one of the five participating teams, with immediate effect following the arrest of team owner Tamim Rahman in Colombo on Wednesday. He was arrested under the 2019 Prevention of Offences Relating to Sports Act, which relates to corruption.Sri Lanka police told ESPNcricinfo that Rahman is a British national of Bangladeshi origin and was arrested prior to boarding a flight in Colombo. The law under which Rahman was arrested was worked on, in part, by the ICC’s anti-corruption unit.”While the specifics of the charges against Mr. Rahman remain unclear, the integrity and smooth functioning of the Lanka Premier League are of utmost importance,” Sri Lanka Cricket said in a statement. “This termination aims to uphold the values and reputation of the LPL, ensuring that all participants adhere to the highest standards of conduct and sportsmanship.”The LPL management is working diligently to address the consequences of this termination and to ensure minimal disruption to the upcoming season.”Related

For now, this means that one of the tournament’s teams – Thunders – is without an owner. It was one of the two new franchises at the Sri Lankan franchise league under new ownership this year, the other being Galle Marvels. Thunders were understood to be owned by Imperial Sports Group, believed to be founded by Rahman. The other ownership change was at the Galle franchise, which switched from being called Gladiators to Marvels. At the LPL 2024 auction held just the day before – where ICC anti-corruption unit officials were present – Thunders retained many of the players who had been a part of Dambulla Aura, their earlier avatar, and added the Afghanistan duo of Karim Janat and Hazratullah Zazai to the ranks. Janat, in fact, earned the highest bid among the fresh overseas signings, going for US$80,000.The franchise also has in its rolls prominent overseas cricketers like Mustafizur Rahman, Ibrahim Zadran and Iftikhar Ahmed, as well as Sri Lanka internationals Dilshan Madushanka, Nuwan Thushara, Akila Dananjaya, Danushka Gunathilaka, Nuwan Pradeep and others. What will happen to the franchise, and the league in general, remains unclear now. For starters, new ownership has to come in to bankroll the Dambulla team, who have had three changes in ownership since the league began in 2020. The Dambulla team came second in last year’s LPL, when they were called Dambulla Aura, but those owners have also since faced financial fraud charges.Sri Lanka became the first South Asian nation to criminalise several offences related to match-fixing, after its parliament passed all three readings of the Prevention of Offences Related to Sports bill in November 2019.

Salman Butt, Kamran Akmal and Rao Iftikhar to assist chief selector Wahab Riaz

While Akmal and Anjum have held selection roles before, this is Butt’s first appointment with PCB since returning from a ban after the spot-fixing scandal of 2010

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Dec-2023The PCB has appointed former international cricketers Kamran Akmal, Rao Iftikhar Anjum and Salman Butt as consultant members to chief selector Wahab Riaz. The trio will take up their role in the selection panel with immediate effect. Their first assignment as consultant members begins with Pakistan’s five-match T20I series against New Zealand that gets underway from January 12 after the conclusion of their Test tour to Australia. The PCB said that when the trio are not engaged in selection duties, they might be given additional tasks such as conducting skill camps. Both Akmal and Anjum have had selection responsibilities before. Akmal, who represented Pakistan in 53 Tests, 157 ODIs and 58 T20Is in a career spanning 15 years before retiring from all forms of cricket this February, was named chair of PCB’s Junior Selection committee earlier this year. He was also appointed chair of an eight-member selection committee, which would conduct Under-13, Under-16 and Under-19 trials for the selection of regional and district teams.Related

Anjum played one Test, 62 ODIs and two T20Is for Pakistan, and was part of a three-man committee when Shahid Afridi was named interim chief selector of the Pakistan men’s national team alongside Abdul Razzaq later last year. However, this is the first time former captain Butt will be assuming an official role with the PCB since his return from a long ban for his role in the spot-fixing scandal of 2010. He played 33 Tests, 78 ODIs and 24 T20Is, and was the captain when he was handed the ban. Butt never returned to Pakistan colours after that, though he did play first-class cricket and was also offered a commentator’s job by the PCB in 2020.The appointments will raise some eyebrows. Butt was banned and has served time for his role in the 2010 scandal, but both Wahab and Akmal were questioned in and around that same episode. Akmal was sent a notice by the ICC after the T20 World Cup in 2010 – much before the spot-fixing incident broke out that year – though he was later cleared to be selected by Pakistan. Akmal did not play another Test after the episode at Lord’s, though he did feature in Pakistan’s white-ball sides.Wahab was also questioned by Scotland Yard in the immediate aftermath of the Lord’s Test that year, but was never charged with any offence. He was appointed the new chief selector of the senior men’s team two weeks back after Inzamam-ul-Haq stepped down from his position in the wake of conflict-of-interest allegations.Much later in the day, the PCB put out a statement to say that the consultants would not have any independent decision-making powers. “Consultant members assist the chief selector by providing recommendations, collecting feedback and identifying top-performing talent in domestic cricket,” it said. “Their role is to present this information to the chief selector and the selection committee for consideration in their decision-making process. The Consultant Members do not have any independent decision-making powers.”Amid the raft of changes, Mohammad Hafeez was also appointed as team director, and will also serve as Pakistan’s head coach in Australia and New Zealand. The squad for the three-match Test series in Australia was picked on November 20. The series will be Shan Masood’s first as Pakistan captain after Babar Azam stepped down from the position in all formats last month.

ILT20: Shaheen Afridi signs with Desert Vipers for three seasons

Afridi will become the first big-name Pakistan star to be part of the league

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Aug-2023Shaheen Shah Afridi has signed with Desert Vipers for the second season of the UAE’s ILT20, and will become the first Pakistan player to play in the league when it takes place in January next year. He has joined on a three-year contract.”I am excited to join the Desert Vipers. I know there are many Pakistan cricket fans in the UAE and I hope they will support our team in the upcoming ILT20,” Afridi said in a statement. With the season scheduled to begin on January 13, Afridi will join the group after returning from Australia after the New Year’s Test in Sydney.Last year, Vipers had signed Azam Khan, which would have made him the first Pakistan player in the ILT20, but the PCB eventually did not grant him the no-objection certificate to play in the league.Related

The PCB, under current chairman Zaka Ashraf, has softened its stance on allowing players to participate in various T20 leagues, after the players had expressed displeasure last year on the restrictive terms imposed under the administration at the time, led by Ramiz Raja. The PCB administration under Najam Sethi, Ashraf’s predecessor, was also understood to have been negotiating with ILT20 about making Pakistan players available.”Shaheen is a player of world-class calibre who has had a significant impact not only for Pakistan but for every team he’s played for in recent times,” Vipers director of cricket Tom Moody said on their new signing. “He offers a huge amount as an impact pace bowler that has destroyed many, many top-orders and he also boasts terrific leadership skills that will add a huge amount of value to the Desert Vipers moving forward.”Afridi will join a bowling attack that already has Wanindu Hasaranga, Matheesha Pathirana, Tom Curran and Sheldon Cottrell among others.Vipers retained many of their players after finishing runners-up in the inaugural season. The list includes captain Colin Munro and opener Alex Hales, who finished as the highest run-scorer of the tournament.

Arsenal ahead of Liverpool in race to sign £71m striker who Wenger loves

Arsenal have now moved ahead of Liverpool in the race to sign an “unbelievable” striker who Arsene Wenger rates very highly, according to a report.

Mikel Merino bags winning goal in Chelsea triumph

The Gunners proved they have what it takes to grind out results without an out-and-out striker yesterday afternoon, with Mikel Merino scoring the only goal of the game in the 1-0 victory over Chelsea in the Premier League.

However, it is clear that Mikel Arteta is keen to bring in a top striker in the summer transfer window, and the Spaniard is said to be personally driving a move for Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez, amid the Uruguayan’s uncertain future at Anfield.

Alexander Isak also remains on the north Londoners’ list of targets, alongside Benjamin Sesko, with the RB Leipzig striker being touted as a potential replacement for Kai Havertz, who has received heavy criticism at times this season.

Earlier this month, it was revealed Arsenal are also battling Liverpool for the signature of Inter Milan striker Marcus Thuram, and there has now been a positive update on their pursuit of the striker.

According to a report from Football Insider, the Gunners have now moved ahead of their Premier League rivals in the race for Thuram, alongside Chelsea, who have also seemingly stepped up their interest.

Inter Milan'sMarcusThuramcelebrates scoring their first goal

The striker has a £71m release clause included in his contract with the Italian club, with Inter currently trying to negotiate a new deal to extend his stay at the San Siro, and deter any interested clubs from launching a move.

The Frenchman is viewed as a key player by Inter, given the contribution he has made this season, with the Serie A side in a strong position to win the league title.

"Unbelievable" Thuram leading Inter's title charge

The Italy-born striker has been one of the first names on the teamsheet for Inter this season, picking up 16 goals and four assists in all competitions, including one goal in each leg of his side’s round of 16 Champions League clash against Feyenoord.

The 27-year-old was lauded as “unbelievable” by Statman Dave earlier in the campaign, while he also impressed Wenger during his time in Germany, with the former Arsenal boss singling his compatriot out for high praise.

“Technically, he (Henry) could do everything, however there is one player in the Bundesliga who reminds me of him — Marcus Thuram at Borussia Moenchengladbach.”

The only potential concern over the signing of Thuram will be the fact he has struggled in front of goal since the turn of the year, failing to score in 11 of his last 12 Serie A outings, but he is still on course to record his most prolific campaign of his career to date.

Titans look to seal top-two finish; Mumbai boosted by Tilak Varma's availability

The battle between Titans’ bowlers and Mumbai’s batters could play a decisive role at the Wankhede

Abhimanyu Bose11-May-20237:46

Do Mumbai have the bowling attack to take down Titans?

Big picture: Mumbai’s batting vs Titans’ bowlingOn one side, there are Mumbai Indians who have mowed down targets of 200 or more in the last three games where they were chasing. On the other are Gujarat Titans, who have restricted their last three opponents to 130, 118, and then 171 after they themselves scored 227.So this is essentially a battle between Mumbai’s powerful batters and Titans’ wily bowlers.Mumbai, who chased down 200 inside 17 overs in their previous game, against Royal Challengers Bangalore, have been buoyed by Suryakumar Yadav’s return to form, the emergence of Nehal Wadhera that has helped them cover for Tilak Varma’s injury, and Ishan Kishan once again providing explosive starts. With the big-hitting Tim David and Cameron Green also chipping in with high-impact cameos, Mumbai have been a batting force to reckon with.Related

Table-toppers Gujarat Titans possess a lethal bowling attack, spearheaded by Mohammed Shami and Rashid Khan who, along with Chennai Super Kings’ Tushar Deshpande, jointly sit atop the wicket-takers’ chart this season with 19 scalps each.Shami has consistently troubled batters with the new ball, with captain Hardik Pandya giving him good support from the other end. Rashid, meanwhile, gets his support from fellow Afghan wristspinner Noor Ahmad, as the two chip away in the middle overs. With this blueprint, they had restricted Mumbai to 152 for 9, in a chase of 208, when these two teams met earlier in the season.A win on Friday will secure Titans a top-two finish in the league stage, while Mumbai Indians – who moved from No. 8 into the top four with their win against RCB – can ill afford a slip-up in a congested table.Recent resultsMumbai Indians WLWWL

Stokes hails England's new legacy under Buttler: 'We've lived up to all challenges thrown at us'

“We’ve got better and better and peaked at the right time to be deserved champions,” says Buttler

Stokes is ‘a big presence, a big personality, a big winner’

Ben Stokes has hailed a new legacy under Jos Buttler as England added the T20 World Cup to their 50-over title, becoming the first team in men’s cricket history to hold both trophies simultaneously.Stokes took England over the line with an unbeaten half-century for a five-wicket victory in the final at the MCG after Sam Curran, the Player of the Match and the tournament, took 3 for 12 from his four overs to restrict Pakistan to 137 for 8.Related

Pakistan made a 'massive mistake' in the death overs

With the now-retired Eoin Morgan – who captained England to victory at Lord’s in 2019 – standing beside him as a commentator, Stokes told Sky Sports that Buttler had put his own stamp on the team as skipper.”When the great man stepped down and Jos took over, you look how quickly he managed to take control of the team and progress it from the legacy that Morgan’s left,” Stokes said. “Jos has now created his own legacy.”He’s a guy who everyone follows on the field and it shouldn’t be taken for granted how hard it can be making tactical decisions under pressure in this format.”Adil Rashid’s wicket-maiden, with a brilliant caught-and-bowled to remove Babar Azam in the 12th over of Pakistan’s innings, was also an important turning point as he claimed 2 for 22.”Adil Rashid, Sam Curran, that’s what won us the game,” Stokes said. “That was a tricky wicket, it was never one that you felt you were ever in on.”When you chase totals in games like this you so often forget the hard work that’s gone in before. The way that Sam and Rash and all the bowlers bowled to restrict them… I think on that was a huge reason as to why we didn’t feel under too much pressure with the run chase.”I never felt like it was out of our hands at all and [I was] just trying to make sure I stayed there a long as I possibly could at the end.”Both Stokes and Buttler pinpointed England’s loss to Ireland in their rain-affected group game as another turning point, in the context of the tournament.”With that being so early on in the competition we obviously had to address it, say what we said, and then let it go because in tournaments you can’t carry baggage with you,” Stokes said.”That was a little blip on the way. Credit to Ireland for turning up and beating us but the best teams learn from their mistakes, they take it on the chin but they never let it affect them and they just let it go, move onto the next challenge. I feel as if we’ve lived up to all the challenges that we’ve had thrown at us throughout the tournament.”Buttler was pleased with his team’s improvement since that match and thrilled with being able to ice the 50-over World Cup triumph with this latest title.”The Ireland game was really tough for the team to take but since then we’ve improved, we’ve got better and better, peaked at the right time, and now to be, I think, deserved champions,” Buttler said.”To be able to win the T20 World Cup now as well, just immensely proud of everyone here. It’s been a long journey and a few changes over the last few years about how we played but we are reaping the rewards of that.”This felt a long way away after the Ireland match here but the character we showed from that point on in must-win games every time has been amazing.”England were again forced to manage without Mark Wood and Dawid Malan, who both also missed the semi-final through injury, and showed off their depth.”It certainly wasn’t easy at all and we managed to get away with a decent start, which controlled the run rate,” Buttler said. “We bat deep as well, which gives us a lot of options. And that man again, Ben Stokes, was just there at the end.”He is the ultimate competitor in anything he does. He has got a hell of a lot of experience to bank on as well.”Alex Hales, Ben Stokes, Adil Rashid and Chris Jordan were heroes of England’s campaign at various points•Getty Images

Matthew Mott, who took over as England’s white-ball coach in May and has now taken Australia Women and the England men’s team to two World Cups in a year and three in the space of two years, praised Stokes’ performance.”If there’s one you wanted out there I think it’d be him and I think he copped a bit of flack coming into this tournament about T20, but he’s a match winner in every format and we have complete faith in the way he would go about things and he steadied the ship nicely tonight,” Mott said.Mott also paid tribute to Morgan, who quit international cricket in June, having struggled for runs during England’s tour of the Netherlands earlier that month.”I pay credit towards Morgs a bit as well,” Mott added. “That first tour to Holland, we’d caught up before then, he let me know how the group operated and how he thought it could operate going forward.”He set it up and I knew that he wanted Jos to do well and it was a real seamless transition I think for Jos to be over there, he captained the last game over there. I think that really helped set things up.”Since then, England failed to win a white-ball series at home before beating Pakistan 4-3 and Australia 2-0 in T20I series before this tournament. Buttler was injured for the Pakistan tour, where Moeen Ali stood in as captain.”I knew that there’d be some teething problems,” Mott said. “When you lose a strong leader like Morgs who has been around for a long time, it was going to take time to build a team, but I always had faith about great depth in our playing group.”We had some adaptable players and even when we weren’t winning there, I could see a real love for each other in that group… I always knew that the results would turn around if we we stayed the course and didn’t panic.”I think he’s learning all the time, like I am as a coach,” Mott added of Buttler. “And learning about our players. He’s just going from strength to strength. He’s learning more about himself and our relationship’s great. Obviously Morgs’s legacy is pretty strong, he set the team up beautifully and I think Jos is putting his own mark on it now as well.”
