    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The trademark 'siu' celebration sees the Portuguese superstar performing a mid-air pirouette before exclaiming "si!" (sometimes spelled "siu") – which is Spanish for "yes!" – upon landing. It is an expression of delight at scoring. Over the years, the Al-Nassr star has performed several celebrations but the 'siu' remains one of his most iconic.

Wolves: Nuno could’ve signed £90m "monster" for just £9m in 2020

Wolverhampton Wanderers have had the pleasure of welcoming an abundance of talent to the pitch of Molineux over the years, with some of their most prolific talents of the Premier League era coming through Nuno Espirito Santo’s reign.

The Portuguese manager, along with renowned player agent Jorge Mendes, welcomed a host of flourishing talent from their home nation during his era to great effect as the Old Gold secured promotion to the Premier League in 2018.

From Ruben Neves to Joao Moutinho, and Ruben Vinagre to Diogo Jota, many Portuguese talents have found sanctuary at Molineux in recent years, and some not so much.

Former Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves.

Goncalo Guedes, Pedro Goncalves and Vitinha are some examples of elite talent not able to adapt to life in England but showcase their quality elsewhere, with not every transfer resulting in a happy ending for club and player.

Wolves have had to kiss many frogs to sieve the gold from the sand in their Portuguese revolution, with Nuno testing the fortune of trial and error during his time at the club, however there was one top talent that the current Al-Ittihad boss could have struck gold by securing.

Back in 2020, the Old Gold were in good stead to capture the signature of a current Premier League star, as prior to his move to Fulham in 2022, midfielder Joao Palhinha was linked with a low-cost move to Wolves.

Did Wolves nearly sign Joao Palhinha?

As reported by Portuguese outlet O Jogo at the time, Wolves had a potential deal put on ‘pause’ for Palhinha, as CSKA Moscow announced their interest in the midfielder that was valued by Sporting CP at €15m (£13m).

O Jogo told the story of the Midlands side’s desire to purchase the defensive player, who had just succeeded in a loan spell at SC Braga at the point of the report.

joao-palhinha-fulham-liverpool-transfer-premier-league

It was believed that Nuno’s side were hoping to make ‘significant sales’ in order to add additional reinforcements to the fold at Molineux, with the presented proposal of the clubs interested said to be in the region of just €10m (£9m).

O Jogo went as far as to say that a deal with the Old Gold was ‘very close’, suggesting just how narrow the distance was between Wolves sealing a deal for the now in-demand star.

How much was Joao Palhinha worth at the time?

In the summer of 2020 when Wolves were circling the midfielder, Football Transfers logged his expected transfer value at around €6.4m (£5.5m), a price lower than anticipated as the Sacavenense academy product began to solidify his status in Portugal.

Prior to the 2020/21 campaign, the Lisbon-born whiz had secured 105 Primeira Liga appearances, with the majority of his experience coming from his consecutive loan spells at Braga.

With the likes of Neves and Moutinho already in his ranks, Nuno was more aware than most of the calibre of player he could lure from his homeland, making his missing out on Palhinha even more agonising with reference to how things have turned out for the 28-year-old.

What happened to Joao Palhinha?

At the point of his return to Sporting CP following his second spell with Braga, the Lions recognised the talent they had on their hands, and Palhinha became a firm member of the squad in the 2020/21 and 2021/22 campaigns.

It wasn’t long before the Portuguese controller secured his move to the Premier League, but to Wolves’ disappointment, it was to a more southern destination, as he penned a five-year deal with Fulham worth £20m last summer.

Following his arrival, journalist Pedro Sepulveda informed Sky Sports of the calibre of player that the Cottagers had obtained, describing him as one of Sporting’s “main players” during their title-winning campaign of 2020/21.

It didn’t take long for Marco Silva to realise just how fundamental spending £20m on Palhinha was, as the midfielder took centre stage in the Premier League and revealed himself as one of the best-performing talents in his position in England’s top flight.

Lauded as a “defensive monster” by analyst Marcus Bring, the 28-year-old ranked as the best player among Europe’s top five leagues over the past year with reference to his rate of tackles per 90, averaging a massive 4.23 per 90 for Fulham, via FBref.

In the Premier League last season, no player won more tackles per 90 than the former Wolves target, as he won an average of 2.40 per 90 to reinforce just how much of a presence he had asserted himself as at Craven Cottage.

How much is Joao Palhinha worth now?

Based on his consistent level of performance in the middle of the park, the Fulham hero was dubbed “the best” central midfielder that teammate Tom Cairney had “ever seen”, rightful praise for a player that made such an impact in his first taste of Premier League action.

At the start of his journey with the Cottagers just last summer, Football Transfers valued Palhinha at just €11.4m (£9.8m), a figure similar to the supposed offer that Wolves had put on the table for the midfielder two years prior.

This summer, it became clear that in signing the towering asser, Silva had uncovered a gold mine, as interest came swarming in from elsewhere, forcing the Cottagers to slap an eye-watering £90m price tag on their star player.

On deadline day, everything looked set for the west London side to bid farewell to their hero after just one season, as Bayern Munich were reported to have agreed a fee in the region of £58m to sign him.

In the dying embers, the deal collapsed as the German champions ran out of time to secure his signature, leaving the Portuguese gem feeling dejected as he travelled back to England to rejoin his teammates at Craven Cottage after being denied the big move.

From an expected market value of £9.8m to sporting a price tag of ten times the amount a year later, Palhinha exceeded expectations during his first term in the Premier League, giving Wolves a feeling of what once could have been.

What could Joao Palhinha have offered to Wolves?

Aside from his innate ability to battle and orchestrate in the midfield, Nuno could have struck gold by signing the talent for just £9m back in 2020.

Taking into consideration Wolves’ financial issues of late, and the offloading of quality this summer to generate profit, having a player as valuable as Palhinha in their ranks could have avoided the crisis they’re currently in.

nuno-espirito-santo-wolves

The signs were there that the former Sporting CP destroyer could be a top addition to Nuno’s midfield, however not many could have predicted the success he would achieve in the Premier League after playing in only Portugal for the entirety of his career prior to the move.

Now valued by Fulham at £90m with plenty of potential suitors eyeing his progression from the summer’s drama, Wolves truly missed out on one of the best by failing to sign Palhinha.

R Ashwin lined up for Worcestershire return

R Ashwin is expected to return as an overseas player for the latter stages of Worcestershire’s County Championship campaign.Ashwin, who enjoyed a successful spell at the club in 2017, is expected to replace Travis Head as the club’s overseas player for the final two Championship matches of the 2018 season: Essex away and Yorkshire at home.He played four Championship games for the club in 2017, claiming 20 wickets at an average of 29.15 as well as averaging 42.50 with the bat. Worcestershire won all four games to ensure both the Division Two title and promotion. A similar spell this year could be enough to steer Worcestershire, who have lost three of their first four games in Division One, away from relegation. While it is understood no contract has yet been signed and any deal is dependent upon BCCI clearance, it seems the Indian board’s attitude to allowing their players to appear in foreign domestic competitions has relaxed substantially in recent times. Ishant Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara and Varun Aaron have appeared during the opening weeks of the county season while Virat Kohli will join Surrey in June.

England belief growing as Malan ton ticks another box

Dawid Malan scored his first hundred in an England shirt and though Moeen Ali and Craig Overton missed out on the chance to find form late wickets left victory in sight

George Dobell in Townsville17-Nov-2017
ScorecardMaybe it’s the sea air or maybe they have been lulled into a false sense of security by the modesty of the opposition, but there appears to be a growing sense of optimism within the England squad. The announcement of Australia’s squad for the first Ashes Test confirmed a couple of long-held suspicions. Notably that Australia have holes and weaknesses, too. They can be beaten. It’s the Australian bowling attack that has England interested. It’s not that it’s weak – far from it – but it might well be thin. For however good Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc are – and they look very good indeed – they can’t bowl forever. And with only one other specialist seamer in their side – Josh Hazlewood – England will know that if they can force them into fourth and fifth spells, if they can force them to pull on their boots for a fourth or fifth session in the field, the cracks will begin to show. That’s easier said than done, of course. On the last Ashes tour in 2013-14, England might have felt similarly about Mitchell Johnson. But they never could push him into those extra spells as he struck almost every time he was unleashed. There’s a key difference this time, though. Australia do not have an allrounder like Shane Watson (or even Mitchell Marsh) on whom they can rely to bowl tight overs with an old ball to maintain the pressure and allow the faster bowlers to recover. Instead they will need Nathan Lyon and Hazlewood to bowl long spells and allow Cummins and Starc, both of whom have suffered significant injury setbacks in recent times, to operate in short bursts. If England can bat long, they might be able to exploit that selection. There’s no lack of respect for the Australian squad. But it does appear they will have a man at No. 7 – Tim Paine – with one first-class century to his name, who has averaged under 20 with the bat in the last four Shield seasons and who wasn’t been guaranteed a place in his state side in recent weeks. England, by contrast, will have a man at No. 8 – Chris Woakes – with nine first-class centuries to his name.So it was encouraging that England should bat for 142.5 overs and score more than 500 here. Yes, conditions were comfortable and the opposition soft. But an England side which has, at times batted fast rather than long took the opportunity to attune to the mentality required to win the Ashes. If they keep Cummins and Starc out in the field for 142 overs…It seems churlish to find fault in a total in excess of 500, but England may be just a little concerned by another batting collapse in mid-innings. They lost five wickets for 38 runs at one stage, subsiding from 419 for 4 to 457 for 9 before a tenth-wicket stand of 58 put things right. While such collapses occur too frequently to be brushed aside, there was an element of freakishness about most of the wickets. Joe Root, for example, was caught – brilliantly caught – down the leg side, Jonny Bairstow hit a full toss to mid-on and Dawid Malan was run-out by a direct hit from midwicket. None betrayed a particular weakness about which England should be overly concerned, though Root was frustrated at himself for failing to convert to a century once again. The two who missed out in a more meaningful way were Moeen Ali and Craig Overton. Moeen, playing his first innings of the tour, simply allowed a straight one from the offspinner Matthew Short who, before this game had taken one first-class wicket at a cost of 91 runs, to pass through the gap between bat and pad, before Overton suffered his third duck of the tour when he turned his first delivery into the hands of short leg.Overton continues to bowl nicely – England experimented with him bowling something approaching leg-theory in the final session – but he could have done with a few runs to shore-up his position in the first Test team. Jake Ball was fit enough to field in the CA XI’s second innings (Alastair Cook was off the field with an upset stomach; it is not thought to be serious) and remains a bit of a threat to Overton’s chances of making a debut in Brisbane. The most pleasing aspect of the day was Malan’s conversion of his overnight half-century into his first century in an England shirt. He has batted – and fielded – faultlessly on this tour to date and looks far more comfortable in this environment than he was during the English summer. He feels that getting to know his team-mates, learning to cope with the media scrutiny and relaxing into his rhythm of batting has left him far better equipped for the challenges ahead. He also feels he had just lost a bit of form when he was first selected for the Test side and was forced to battle for his runs. Now, relaxed in mind and with a slightly more open technique, he is looking elegant and sound at the crease.”When I was picked it coincided with a loss of form,” he said. “It just came at the wrong time in terms of where I was hitting the ball. There were a couple of times against the West Indies where I got to 60 where I felt if I was playing well I probably could have pushed on.”People haven’t seen me at my best yet for England. Apart from in T20. In the Test matches I haven’t played as well as I can. The little habits I got into restricted me in some areas where I’m quite strong. I nicked a few balls I probably wouldn’t nick if I was playing well.”I have opened my stance a bit. I think with the pressures that came last year it closed a little bit. I knew I had gone side on but I didn’t know how much impact that was making on my scoring areas I had. I thought it would make it easier for me and take out a few different modes of dismissal and access the ball in certain areas.”There are scoring areas that feel quite natural to me and I lost those during the summer, whether that be off the hip or a drive, a cut or whatever it was at the time. The shots that come naturally weren’t at the time, which made it quite a battle.”Later Mason Crane again demonstrated his improvement with the bat in helping Woakes extend England’s lead to 265. While the 20-over partnership was not entirely welcome from all the locals – one group, without any irony, sang ‘Boring, Boring’ throughout the day – it gave Woakes an opportunity to spend some time at the crease and provided further evidence of Crane’s improvement in all departments. While the CA XI started their second innings well – they reached 80 without loss – the introduction of spin brought three wickets for seven runs. Moeen found the edge of left-handed Jake Carder’s bat with a sharply turning off-break, before Ryan Gibson let his opportunity for a half-century slip when he missed a sweep. When Crane induced a loose drive from Will Pucovski, it left England eying a half-day on Saturday. For perhaps the first time since the Ben Stokes news broke, you can feel the optimism within the England ranks.

Gleeson's five gives Northants the edge

Craig Meschede and Andrew Salter led a Glamorgan fightback after Richard Gleeson had threatened to make short shrift of their first innings

ECB Reporters Network12-Sep-2017Glamorgan, playing their first Championship match in Cardiff since June, bounced back from a poor start to make 207 before claiming two wickets in reply against a Northants side still holding promotion ambitions after their defeat of Sussex took them third-equal in the Division Two tableA partnership of 97 between Andrew Salter (59) and Craig Meschede (49) enabled Glamorgan to recover from 102 for 6.It looked to be a good toss for Northamptonshire to lose early doors and it took just 1.5 overs for Richard Gleeson to strike, bowling Jacques Rudolph without scoring as he shouldered arms. That left the young pairing of Nick Selman and Jack Murphy to begin the Glamorgan recovery against the opening pace attack of Gleeson and Rory Kleinveldt. Selman had looked to be doing just that before the young Australian-born opener edged to skipper Alex Wakely at slip off Muhammad Azharullah for 22. It wasn’t long before Murphy followed him back to the pavilion, as he was trapped lbw by the same bowler for 12 with the home side soon in trouble again at 36 for 3.Colin Ingram and Welsh youngster Kiran Carlson had added 39 before a light rain shower brought about an early lunch. However, Ingram lasted just one ball after the interval, clumsily caught by keeper David Murphy off Rory Kleinveldt off second slip. Carlson went in the next over, lbw to Gleeson for 10.Chris Cooke was removed by Gleeson, caught behind and Glamorgan were 102 for 6 as the rain delayed play for the second time. The wicket brought Salter and Meschede together and, having waited 20 minutes to get off the mark, Meschede was almost caught at second slip before the ball trickled to the boundary. After the scare, the batsmen piled on the pressure, although Northants had other chances. Salter had to kick the ball away from the stumps off Kleinveldt before Richard Levi dropped Meschede off Kerrigan at second slip.Salter brought up his half-century from 100 balls before left-arm spinner Simon Kerrigan claimed two wickets in an over. Meschede fell one run short of his fifty when he was stumped to end a 97 partnership, before Marchant de Lange was bowled. Lukas Carey was bowled by Gleeson without scoring before he picked up his fifth wicket when Salter was caught at mid-on by Kleinveldt and Glamorgan were all out for 207.Northamptonshire, in reply, started strongly racing to 24 in just 4.2 overs before Ben Duckett was caught by Jack Murphy at mid-wicket off Carey for 11. They had reached 49 when a Murphy off-drive found Carlson off Michael Hogan’s bowling for nine.Rob Newton (31 not out) and Richard Levi had added 10 runs when the players were taken off for bad light. Subsequently rain set in and Northamptonshire ended the day on 59 for 2.

Man Utd Ace Lucky To Avoid Red Card In 2-0 Win Over Arsenal

There’s a collective understanding in pre-season about certain types of challenges. The main two goals are to gain match sharpness ahead of the forthcoming season and to avoid injury. Some players just don’t get the memo, however. There are certain footballers who aren’t quite sure what a friendly is. Those types of players simply see an opponent, the chance of victory, and the opportunity to win in any way possible. And this can usually result in some fairly reckless challenges.Unfortunately for Arsenal, too, Lisandro Martinez is one of those types of players. The Manchester United defender did not hold back in the Red Devils’ pre-season friendly against the Gunners, making a challenge arguably worthy of a red card – as you can see in the footage below.

Did Lisandro Martinez deserve a red card vs Arsenal?

It says a lot about a challenge when it warrants a red card in a friendly, such is the rarity that a referee reaches for his back pocket in such games. But Martinez’s tackle could have quite easily led to his dismissal against Arsenal.

Of course, it’s little surprise that a game between the two Premier League giants ignored all the premises of what a friendly usually is. Yet, this didn’t stop Arsenal players from showing their discontent when Martinez slammed into Bukayo Saka, with his boot particularly high.

Whilst his nickname around Old Trafford is the butcher, we’re not quite sure those in North London will appreciate the World Cup winner’s attempt to slice their star man in half.

Club captain Martin Odegaard was quick to defend Saka, too, squaring up to Martinez to start collective pushing and shoving between the two sides. The fact is, this pre-season affair was anything but friendly, as you can see in this alternative replay shared on YouTube.

What is the market value of Lisandro Martinez?

Signing the defender for a reported £57m last summer, Martinez has been a permanent fixture of Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United side ever since, proving plenty of doubters wrong along the way.

Despite his height, the 25-year-old has comfortably slotted in against some of the Premier League’s best forwards, forming a particularly impressive partnership with Rafael Varane, as the Red Devils conceded the third-fewest goals in England’s top-flight last season.

Despite enjoying an impressive debut campaign, though, Martinez’s value has decreased. According to Transfermarkt, the central defender is currently worth €50m (£43.11m), which is £14m less than United paid for him last summer.

We’re sure that Ten Hag won’t have to worry about the Argentine’s price anytime soon, however, with Martinez set to play a part under the Dutchman for years to come.

Next season will be even more important than the last for the defender, too. Having helped United regain a Champions League place, the Premier League giants must turn their attention to taking things up another level. And that could finally see them challenge for the title once again.

It will be difficult against the likes of treble-winners Manchester City, and an always-improving Arsenal side, but Manchester United may well pull off some shocks in the upcoming campaign to seal their first league title since 2013 under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Rain a worry as Ireland, Bangladesh chase first wins

Ireland have slid considerably over the last year or so, while Bangladesh have just one win from their last five ODIs, leaving both teams desperate for a win

Big pictureA win percentage of 31.5 in completed ODIs since the start of last year pretty much encapsulates how far Ireland have slid in recent times. In two series preceding the ongoing tri-nation tournament, they lost 2-3 to Afghanistan in Greater Noida, before being swept 2-0 by England in England.Conditions played a part in their toils against Afghanistan as Ireland couldn’t quite cope with the slow surfaces in Greater Noida and succumbed to a team that clearly had superior spin stocks. The familiarity of the cold, harsh climes of Malahide, however, hasn’t bred success for them either: they came up short against a weakened New Zealand team, led by Tom Latham. An ageing team has also played a part – the average age of their XI against New Zealand was 29. Veterans like William Porterfield, Niall O’Brien, Kevin O’Brien and Gary Wilson – all of whom played significant roles in Ireland becoming the top Associate nation – are well into their 30s now.Bangladesh’s graph has moved in the opposite direction. Since making the 2015 World Cup quarterfinal, series wins over Pakistan, India and South Africa have made them a force to be reckoned with in home conditions. They came into the tri-series fresh off levelling Test, ODI and T20I series on the tour of Sri Lanka. However, their recent record outside the subcontinent hasn’t been too encouraging. They returned from their tour of New Zealand without a single win in eight international games across formats and have also had mixed results in Ireland overall, with four wins from eight international matches.Form guideIreland LLLLW (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Bangladesh LLWLLIn the spotlightPeter Chase, the 23-year old right-arm pacer, has had a mixed start to his ODI career. Chase has 23 wickets from 16 matches, but also averages 38.95 and has an economy rate of 6.83. His performances in this series have typified that. In the opener, he rocked Bangladesh with early strikes before rain intervened, and finished with 3 for 33 in six overs. In his next match, he was slapped for 74 runs in ten overs by New Zealand. Chase can generate pace and bounce and, in conditions amiable for pace-bowling, this series is an opportunity to bring some consistency in his game and step up in the absence of senior bowler Boyd Rankin.Tamim Iqbal has one fifty and a century from his last five outings with the bat. His good form augurs well given Bangladesh’s tendency to lose wickets in a cluster, often from good positions. Tamim’s experience is also welcome in what are likely to be tough batting conditions.Team newsIreland gave Simi Singh an ODI debut in place of Stuart Thompson against New Zealand, and Simi had a forgettable match scoring 9 off 14 balls in a chase of 290. Thompson himself had replaced Ed Joyce in the series opener against Bangladesh. If Joyce has recovered from his back injury, it is fairly certain neither Simi nor Thompson will find a place in the XI.Ireland (probable) 1 William Porterfield (capt), 2 Paul Stirling, 3 Niall O’Brien (wk), 4 Andy Balbirnie, 5 Kevin O’Brien, 6 Gary Wilson, 7 Stuart Thompson/Ed Joyce, 8 George Dockrell, 9 Barry McCarthy, 10 Tim Murtagh, 11 Peter ChaseIn Bangladesh’s previous match, against New Zealand, Taskin Ahmed made way for the returning Mashrafe Mortaza, who had missed the first match due to an over-rate suspension. Spinners from both sides also did well, with Mitchell Santner claiming a five-for. While it is expected to be partly sunny around start time, rain is forecast at noon and there is cloud cover expected right through the afternoon.Stats and trivia Mahmudullah needs 28 more to complete 3000 runs in ODI cricket.
