Well done, Dwayne

The West Indies record that nearly was, the man who makes Ambrose look like Martin Snedden, and more

In the first Test in Trinidad, which followed to 100% accuracy an unofficial ICC computer-generated ball-by-ball prediction of what would happen, Chris Gayle’s West Indies came within one Dwayne Bravo delivery of history. Until Bravo dismissed Boucher to conclude South Africa’s first innings – a grave tactical error, as it transpired, which served only to unleash Steyn and Morkel onto a poor, defenceless batting line-up – all nine wickets had been taken by spinners.Benn, Shillingford and Gayle himself had tweaked themselves to the brink of obscure statistical immortality. One more wicket would have resulted in them becoming just the third West Indian spin attack to dismiss an entire team, and the first to do so without containing both Sonny Ramadhin and Alf Valentine (the former must be close to a recall, at the age of 81, as the West Indies seek greater penetration in their bowling; even the latter, some years after his death, might be worth a squad place). They would also have become the first spin team to take all 10 wickets in a Test innings outside Asia since Warne and May thoroughly bammed England’s collective boozle at Edgbaston in 1993, and, by my and Statsguru’s reckoning, the first all-fingerspin attack to bowl out an entire side since 1968. Sleep well, Bravo. You have denied Shane Shillingford his slice of immortality. As it was, it was the most profitable return by West Indies slow bowlers for nearly 40 years. How times have changed. West Indian spinners took more wickets in this single hypothetically five-day Test than the combined might of Caribbean tweakery managed in five years between March 1979 and March 1984. This statistic comes from no less a source that the all-knowing, all-seeing Statsguru herself (although, the great goddess who knows all does classify Viv Richards as “mixture/unknown” rather than “spin bowler”) (but the point basically stands) (and it completely stands if you chuck the word “specialist” in as the third word of the second sentence of this paragraph, before the word “spinner”).This was also the second time in little over a year that the West Indies opening bowlers took no wickets in a Test match. The previous occasion, last February in North Sound, Antigua, was more excusable, as the match lasted just 10 balls, due to the minor inconvenience of the entire playing area having been constructed entirely out of sand.Dale Steyn became the 57th bowler to pass 200 wickets in Tests. He sits 11th in the averages on that list, just ahead of Shaun Pollock, Waqar, Wasim, Holding and Lillee, so he is doing quite well for a someone who took 14 wickets at 60 in his maiden stint in English county cricket, outbowled in the Essex attack by, amongst others, Ravi Bopara and James Middlebrook. To this day he still cannot get back into the Essex team – some selectors have long memories − but his Test match strike rate of 38.9 is way out in front of Waqar, and makes legendary spearheads such as Jeff Thomson and Curtly Ambrose look like Derek Pringle and Martin Snedden. Here is a stat for you that illustrates the state of world bowling. Chew it carefully, and then draw a picture that expresses what you think about it. Of all the bowlers who have made their debuts since 1999, only two – Steyn and Mitchell Johnson – have taken more than 100 wickets at an average of under 30. Of those who launched themselves into Test cricket between 1992 and 1998, 16 achieved that feat, beginning with Warne and ending with Ntini. In an imminent future blog, I will speculate wildly on the various causes of the Great Great Bowler Drought. It is certainly a shame that Warne has not presaged a deluge of champion legspinners as was hoped. That is because being the greatest legspinner the universe has ever seen is not easy. Believe me, I tried. Briefly. I was, without question, the greatest legspinner in the Zaltzman family for a couple of heady years in the early 1990s, but when my googly started landing with unerring regularity half-way to third man, I decided to focus on becoming the greatest pogo-stick rider of all time. But I didn’t own a pogo stick, so I gave up and started reading books about 1950s Ashes series. There are now no known legspinners in my family, although my 18-month-old son does occasionally stick his belly out, throw his hands into the air and bark something that sounds a little like “Howzat”, so there is hope.Copying Warne has proved impossible – similarly, when people visit the Sistine Chapel to have a look at Michelangelo’s pretty pictures on the ceiling, they do not, generally, whip out an easel and start painting feverishly whilst muttering: “I could do better than that, no problem.” They tend to take a photo, or buy a postcard, and say to themselves: “Fair play to the lad, he’s done me on painting. One-nil to him. But I’ll get him back at table tennis, the dead-for-446-years little rascal.”

Sehwag's total dominance

Virender Sehwag was utterly ruthless in his demolition of West Indies in Indore

S Rajesh08-Dec-2011 Virender Sehwag finished with 219 from 149 balls, at a strike rate of 146.97. Only five times has a 150-plus score been made at a better rate. The innings included 25 fours and seven sixes, which means 142 runs came in boundaries. Only once has a batsman scored more runs in fours and sixes in an ODI: Shane Watson struck 15 fours and as many sixes in his unbeaten 185 against Bangladesh earlier in 2011, which means 150 of his runs came in boundaries. (Click here for the full list of most boundary runs in an innings.) Sachin Tendulkar struck exactly 25 fours too in his unbeaten 200 in Gwalior. No batsman has hit more fours in an ODI innings. A break-up of his innings shows that he never dropped below fourth gear. His first 50 came at the end of the 15th over, but that’s also partially because he didn’t get much strike during that period. He reached his fifty with a six, to go from 49 to 55, and thereafter he needed only 28 deliveries to move from 56 to 101. He reached his century in the 23rd over, his 150 in the 36th, and his 200 in the 44th. His last 68 runs came off a mere 37 balls, and included nine fours, two sixes, and seven dot balls.

He relished Kieron Pollard and Andre Russell more than the rest, but a measure of his dominance can be gleaned from the fact that the most economical bowler against him was Ravi Rampaul, and even he went for 30 from 25 balls.

Pat Cummins rises to the occasion to seal two-wicket Edgbaston epic

Gripping finale has echoes of 2005 as Australia draw first blood in 2023 Ashes

Matt Roller20-Jun-2023Australia won an epic first Test by two wickets, to take a 1-0 lead over England at Edgbaston, an hour and six minutes after they seemed to have lost it.Pat Cummins, their captain, squeezed Ollie Robinson’s short ball down towards the boundary directly in front of the travelling Australian supporters in their canary caps in Block 31 of Edgbaston’s South Stand. Harry Brook sprawled to his right in a bid to cut it off at deep third, but the ball squirmed out of his grasp and into the boundary to clinch a two-wicket victory. When Joe Root held an outrageous caught-and-bowled off Alex Carey, Australia still needed 54 more runs to win with Nathan Lyon – described by Robinson as the first of their “three No. 11s” – walking out to join Cummins. England were two wickets away from victory, and had a second new ball available. But 12 overs later, Cummins and Lyon were still there. Cummins flogged Root for two sixes in the first over of the final hour to make a dent in the target and after surviving a spectacular effort by Ben Stokes at square leg when miscuing a hook, Lyon chipped Stuart Broad over mid-on to take the target down to single figures. The Eric Hollies Stand roared England’s depleted attack on. Cummins dug out a yorker from Robinson and both batters wore short balls on the body. With three to win and 28 balls left, Cummins guided Robinson away to the rope, tossed his bat and helmet away, punched the air and lifted Lyon off his feet. It had echoes of the 2005 Test here – but this time, it was Australia who won by two.In the dressing room, Usman Khawaja was “absolutely s***ing myself for the last five minutes” – and Australia’s win would not have been possible without his contribution. He faced 518 balls in the match and batted on each of the five days, top-scoring in both innings with 141 and then 65.After rain wiped out the first session, he batted through an afternoon in which Australia added 76 runs for the loss of only two wickets – one of them nightwatcher Scott Boland, who edged Broad through to Jonny Bairstow. Travis Head poked Moeen Ali to slip as England kept a lid on the scoring rate, but with 98 to win after tea, Australia were clear favourites.Khawaja added 49 with Cameron Green in a sixth-wicket stand that spanned the interval, but when Green inside-edged Robinson’s in-ducker on to his stumps, Stokes sensed an opportunity. He brought himself on for his only spell of the second innings, battling his chronic left-knee injury, and smiled wryly when Khawaja chopped his short, slow legcutter on to off stump. The Edgbaston crowd paused for a moment, deceived by Stokes’ non-celebration, before erupting into life. England had the most important wicket, and needed only three more.Root, bowling an extended spell from the Birmingham End with Moeen’s blistered spinning finger rendering him unable to grip the ball, dropped two difficult half-chances off his own bowling, giving Carey and Cummins a life each. Stokes opted not to take the new ball when it became available; three deliveries later, Root held a stunning reaction catch. With Carey gone, Cummins became the protagonist. He has been criticised throughout these five days for a perceived negativity in his tactics, but took control of the game in its decisive passage. Root went full, so he cleared his front leg and swung him down the ground for six – then repeated the trick two balls later.Broad returned, still with the old ball, and Lyon hooked the second ball of his spell out to Stokes at square leg, 25 yards in from the boundary. He flung himself back, sticking his right hand over his shoulder; the ball looped towards him but escaped his grasp, then squirmed away from his desperate second attempt. When Cummins slapped a cut for four two balls later, the target was down to 30. Stokes opted to take the new ball, but it offered little for Broad and Robinson. They charged in with spread fields but had almost nothing left in the tank; as if to mark the changing of a guard, James Anderson ambled stiffly around the outfield.Despite the jibes, Lyon batted more like a No. 3, lacing an off drive for four down the ground to the rope – and beating Robinson at mid-off to his right. After Cummins’ off-side push slap under Crawley at the cover boundary, Lyon flogged Broad over the top towards the Australian supporters. They had been barracked relentlessly by the neighbouring Hollies Stand over the course of the Test match but jumped to their feet to celebrate an imminent Australian victory. Three overs later, they did so once more to mark the clinching moment of an enthralling run chase.England were “devastated”, in Stokes’ words, but without their enterprising tactics this game would have been written off as a rain-ruined draw. Instead, it bubbled up to a conclusion that had Australians gripped to their television screens until well past 4am – with the promise of four more Tests to come.

Tamil Nadu players need to be more receptive to criticism – Kanitkar

Injuries, slipshod fielding and players being sensitive to criticism contributed to the side’s downfall this season

Deivarayan Muthu12-Feb-2018Once domestic giants, Tamil Nadu are in shambles now. A season that began with a stutter against Andhra in the Ranji Trophy opener came to a screeching halt against the same opposition in the 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy on Sunday. This after Tamil Nadu had ransacked Karnataka to make the Ranji Trophy semi-finals and clinched the Vijay Hazare and Deodhar Trophy titles in 2016-17. A certain Murphy S. Law took a special liking to the Tamil Nadu side this season, and everything that could go wrong went wrong.”It [the season] has taught me what all can go wrong and what all might not fall in place,” coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar said after Tamil Nadu were knocked out of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. “Definitely we haven’t played to our capabilities. We have been lacking in everything.” ESPNcricinfo dissects Tamil Nadu’s cataclysmic fall.Injuries, unavailability of key players
In their must-win fixture against Andhra in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Tamil Nadu were missing five key players – M Vijay (shoulder strain), R Ashwin (personal leave), Abhinav Mukund (shoulder injury), B Indrajith (shoulder injury), Vijay Shankar (back spasm) – and were left scrambling for a captain. In fact, vice-captain B Indrajith wasn’t fit for the entire limited-overs leg of the season while Ranji Trophy captain Abhinav hasn’t played since the league phase of the 20-over Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Dinesh Karthik, who was the flag bearer of Tamil Nadu’s rise in 2016-17, played only six matches this season because of national commitments and rehabilitation at the NCA.Nonetheless, Tamil Nadu had the services of Vijay and Ashwin for the first half of the Ranji season and large parts of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Did the presence – or absence – of the two stars shake up the team combination?”It [team combination] doesn’t get affected much but the players admire these two very much,” Kanitkar said. “So because of that if they change their way on how they play unknowingly or knowingly then it can make a difference. Maybe they would want to impress these guys and they may not be their natural self. If such a thing is affecting players then they have to talk about it and sort it out.”Letting the opposition off the hook
You may have read about this on these pages before, and the trend seeped into the Vijay Hazare Trophy. One area where Tamil Nadu were totally exposed compared to the other top teams was in the fielding. In the match against Madhya Pradesh, they reprieved Rajat Patidar on 39 and 112 and watched him score an unbeaten 158 to secure MP in a chase of 303. Then against Andhra, Tamil Nadu repeated the same mistake: they dropped Srikar Bharat on 5 and 13 and watched him land the knockout blow with 82.”I felt fielding is something that you do for the team,” Kanitkar summed up the fielding woes. “Bowling or batting you might do for yourself, but fielding you always do it for the team, it’s never for yourself. I think that’s where we have lacked.”Players sensitive to criticism
A critical part of any team’s set-up is communication. Kanitkar has indirectly hinted that some of Tamil Nadu’s players were unwilling to take the blame. Kanitkar, who had played for Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan in a 146-match first-class career, said Tamil Nadu’s players “need to be more receptive to criticism”.”In Maharashtra and other places, nobody is beyond reproach from anybody,” Kanitkar said. “It doesn’t matter if I’m an international player, if I’m not playing to my potential and if my efforts are not good there will always be somebody to tell you. I think that needs to develop a little more here. Here cricket is run brilliantly. But the boys need to know how lucky they are for what all they are getting from the association. They need to be more receptive to criticism and be less sensitive.”Trouble in paradise?
After Vijay “failed to report” to the SSN College ground for the clash against Mumbai on February 8, citing “shoulder pain”, Kanitkar said he was aware of the injury. A TNCA release, however, stated that the selection committee and the physio weren’t aware of it. The “communication gap” didn’t go down well with the TNCA and left the team management shortchanged.Kanitkar’s two-year contract expires at the end of this season and though he is keen to continue in the job, it remains to be seen if the TNCA still wants him.

While Villa have publicly denied any intention of parting ways with their star striker, recent history suggests the door might not be entirely closed. Back in January, the Midlands club offered Watkins to Arsenal, only to retract that stance after offloading Jhon Duran instead. At the time, Villa’s asking price was £60 million ($81m), but sources now suggest a fee in the region of £40m to £45m could be enough to tempt the club into negotiating. For United, this could represent a more financially feasible route compared to other high-profile alternatives like Sesko.

Zimbabwe in danger of missing T20 World Cup as Uganda make history

A five-wicket defeat to Uganda, their second loss in three games at the Africa Region Qualifier, has dealt a serious blow to Zimbabwe’s hopes of reaching the 2024 men’s T20 World Cup. Zimbabwe came into this game having lost their tournament-opener to hosts Namibia – a result their coach Dave Houghton had called “embarrassingly bad” – and won their second game against Tanzania by nine wickets. As things stand, Zimbabwe are fourth on the seven-team table with three games left to play. Namibia and Kenya top the table with perfect records, having won all three of their respective games so far. Zimbabwe’s remaining games pit them against Rwanda, Nigeria – both of whom are currently below them on the standings – and Kenya.Related

Houghton slams 'embarrassingly bad' Zimbabwe loss to Namibia

Uganda are in third place, having beaten Tanzania and lost to Namibia before Sunday’s result. This was Uganda’s first game against a Full Member team in a T20I, and they celebrated the occasion in style. The top two teams from the Africa Region Qualifier will qualify for the 20-team T20 World Cup, which will be hosted by the West Indies and the USA in June 2024.Uganda’s win was set up by a three-wicket haul from the left-arm seamer Dinesh Nakrani, who played a central role in restricting Zimbabwe to 136 for 7 after they were sent in. Apart from captain Sikandar Raza, who scored 48 off 39 balls, no Zimbabwe batter really got going, with Innocent Kaia (23 off 23) and Sean Williams (21 off 24) failing to kick on from slow starts.Uganda’s chase got off to a rocky start as they slipped to 12 for 2, before Roger Mukasa and Alpesh Ramjani joined forces to steady their innings. Ramjani was by far the dominant partner, contributing 40 off 26 balls to the third-wicket stand of 49. When he fell, Uganda needed 76 off 56 balls, and Riazat Ali Shah kept them on track with a 28-ball 42. Nakrani, the hero with the ball, was present at the finish too, contributing an unbeaten 14 to the historic win. The winning moment came with four byes off Raza’s bowling, from the first ball of the final over.

Rashford double sends Villa to FA Cup semi-finals

Two second-half goals from Marcus Rashford helped secure Villa’s place in the last four of the FA Cup this weekend, as the Midlands side eased past Preston North End. It was Rashford’s first and second goals for Villa since joining on loan from Manchester United, and manager Unai Emery believes Rashford has now made “one step forward”.

The Villans do have the option of making Rashford’s deal at Villa Park a permanent switch, and after the game against Preston, the boss was asked about the situation, but Emery didn’t want to waste time talking about that.

“We can’t waste time speaking about that,” he told the BBC. “If next year we are in the Champions League, in the Europa, or the Conference League or not. Or we don’t win a trophy – it is completely different.”

Monchi wants Aston Villa to sign Real Madrid star Güler

As the Midlands side continue their focus on what remains of this season, according to a report from Spain, Monchi has confirmed Aston Villa’s interest in signing Arda Güler from Real Madrid this summer.

The report states that despite injuries affecting his game time this season, when he’s played for Real Madrid, he has impressed with his enormous attacking quality. Villa have now taken notice of his performances, and Monchi sees Guler as the ideal player to reinforce their attack as the Villans look for young players who can continue their growth in the Premier League.

However, any deal Villa wishes to do for Güler will be considered difficult to complete, as Real Madrid consider the Turkey international an important player for their future. The report does state however that Madrid will have to make a decision about what they want to do with Güler soon – the player himself will also have to decide what he thinks is best for him and his career amid such limiting playing time this season.
