Liverpool "following" elite new winger amid Luis Diaz links to Barcelona

Liverpool have been linked with a number of new wide players amid doubts around the futures of Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz, and they've now turned their interest to one who ranked ahead of Jude Bellingham in the Ballon d'or voting.

Liverpool targeting new wingers

The Reds have been linked with a move for numerous wide players in recent weeks, although it may be tricky to acquire certain individuals before Jurgen Klopp's replacement as manager is sorted.

Wolves winger Pedro Neto could decide that he wants a new challenge in the summer, having come as far as he can at Molineux, and Liverpool have reportedly sent scouts to watch him in action. Granted, injuries have affected the Portuguese sensation, but he has the technical brilliance and end product – he has nine assists in the Premier League this season – to be a fantastic signing.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich ace Jamal Musiala is believed to have turned down a new deal worth £150,000 per week, instead potentially preferring a move to the Premier League. Both the Reds and Manchester City are interested in snapping him up.

A statement signing of some kind could be ideal for Liverpool at the end of the season, in terms of showing that there is still plenty of life after Klopp, especially if they lose one or both of Diaz and Salah – the former is known to dream of playing for Barca while the Egypt superstar will once again draw plenty of interest from the Middle East.

Liverpool eyeing superstar who bested Bellingham

According to journalist Ciro Venerato [via Sport Witness], Liverpool are one of the clubs who are keen on signing Napoli winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia this summer.

Kvaratskhelia is arguably one of the most exciting attacking players in Europe currently, becoming a true superstar at Napoli afterf helping them win the Serie A title last season. He is so special that he has even been compared to both Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona, which says all you need to know about his magic as a footballer.

The 23-year-old may not have lit things up this season as much as last time around, but he still has nine goals and four assists in Serie A in 2023/24 to date, and he finished ahead of Jude Bellingham in the Ballon d'Or list, finishing in 17th place last year.

Kvaratskhelia's dribbling quality, unpredictability and eye for goal could make him an incredible signing by Liverpool, and he could even be considered an upgrade on Diaz. The Colombian is a brilliant player, but his end product has been questioned at times, not always proving to be a killer when it really matters, certainly in comparison to Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez this season.

Wayne Rooney aims brutal dig at Gary Neville and reveals how he convinced wife Coleen to move to Plymouth

Wayne Rooney aimed a brutal dig at his former Manchester United teammate Gary Neville during his first media interaction as Plymouth Argyle manager.

Rooney set to take charge at PlymouthUnleashed a scathing banter on NevilleHe has also influenced his wife Coleen to move to DevonWHAT HAPPENED?

Rooney, known for his sharp wit and candid remarks, was in high spirits following his return from Euro 2024 punditry duties for the BBC in Germany during his first press conference as Plymouth boss. He targeted his long-time friend and colleague, Neville, on his brief and tumultuous managerial career at Valencia where he could win only three of 16 La Liga matches before being dismissed in March 2016.

In contrast to Neville's brief managerial career, Rooney has accumulated significant experience over the past four years. He started his managerial journey with a commendable tenure at Derby County, followed by a 15-month period with MLS side DC United. His latest position before joining Plymouth was a challenging three-month spell at Birmingham City.

WHAT ROONEY SAID

Reflecting on his decision to return to management, Rooney quipped, "Because I don't want to be the next Gary Neville!"

Neville has been open about his struggles in management. Recently, on the podcast, Neville recounted how Ernesto Valverde, the Athletic Bilbao manager, had made him feel "massively inferior" with his tactical acumen.

Rooney also shared a light-hearted story about convincing his wife, Coleen, to relocate to Devon from their Cheshire mansion for his new role at Plymouth. Known for his quick wit, Rooney humorously described how he sold the idea to Coleen by telling her Devon was the "Monaco of England."

Despite the jest, Rooney expressed genuine appreciation for the warm welcome he received in Devon and Cornwall. He praised the beauty of the countryside and coastal areas, noting how every person he encountered had been friendly and welcoming. He added: "Every person I've met has been really welcoming. I've had a chat with quite a few people. This is my home now, this is where I'm working and living."

"It’s an honour" – 44 year-old has now "heard" that Liverpool want him

It's all change this summer at Liverpool, starting with the emotional exit of Jurgen Klopp alongside his backroom staff, which includes assistant manager Pep Lijnders. Meanwhile, the Reds will also be forced to search for a new sporting director once again, having been forced to do so last summer, following Jorg Schmadtke's departure.

Ahead of some vital decisions, the Reds have now heards the thoughts of one of their potential replacements in the roles away from the pitch.

Liverpool's next sporting director

When you think of Liverpool sporting directors, the name Michael Edwards instantly springs to mind. Edwards was a central part of the rebuild that took place at Anfield, producing genius transfers which helped shaped Klopp's historic run. The responsibility then fell the way of Julian Ward, who always had an impossible task when attempting to replicate the work of Edwards.

Following Ward, Schmadtke was handed the role on a short-term basis last summer, overseeing Liverpool's midfield evolution, welcoming Wataru Endo, Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch. The German can consider his short spell a great success, with the Reds back at the summit of English football after a disastrous campaign last time out. But now, the search for another sporting director is on once again.

One name linked so far has been West Ham United's Tim Steidten, who has since publicly reacted to the rumours, via Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg. Steidten has been West Ham's technical director since last summer and previously had experience in the Bundesliga with both Bayer Leverkusen and Werder Bremen, perhaps making him an ideal candidate for those at Anfield.

Steidten's West Ham success

The 44-year-old was instantly thrown into the deep end at the London Stadium, with Declan Rice's big-money departure creating pressure to get deals done and the right ones, at that. Now months later, it looks as though Steidten and all involved got things fairly spot on, given the names that they welcomed in the summer window.

€38m (£32m)

James Ward-Prowse

€35m (£30m)

Konstantinos Mavropanos

€2m (£2m)

Kudus has been particularly successful and with Salah's current Liverpool contract set to expire in the summer of 2025, Steidten's West Ham link could provide the Reds with a major boost should they look towards Kudus to replace the Egyptian. Kudus' stats – 13 goals and three assists in all competitions – certainly show promise.

Whoever does come in to replace Schmadtke this summer has been left in a solid position, rather than being handed a complicated task. Klopp, Schmadtke and others already began the formation of Liverpool 2.0 last year, meaning that Steidten or potentially another option would just have to pick up where they left off.

West Ham could have unleashed 17 y/o sensation instead of signing Phillips

After winning the Europa Conference League last season, West Ham United were expected to be challenging for Europa League spots by the end of the current campaign.

At the moment, the London-based club currently find themselves residing in seventh-place, just two points behind Manchester United.

This is a massive upheaval in form as, last season, despite winning a European trophy, The Hammers only survived relegation to the Championship by six points.

In order to try and cement their Premier League status during the 2023/24 season, David Moyes sanctioned a massive overhaul of his squad, which included selling academy graduate, Declan Rice to Arsenal for a fee worth around £105m.

This massive injection of money allowed West Ham to spend around £117m to bolster their team. The summer transfer window included the likes of Mohamed Kudus and James Ward-Prowse joining the club for fees worth over £30m.

However, after the season got started following the end of the summer transfer window, it felt as if something was missing from Moyes' squad.

That is despite Ward-Prowse proving that his transfer fee of £30m was an absolute steal. The former Southampton man has managed to contribute to a total of 15 goals across all competitions thus far.

West Ham midfielder James Ward-Prowse

Despite the midfielder exceeding what was expected of him following last season's 16 goal contributions for Southampton, the centre of West Ham's team seemed to lack stability and needed somebody to come in and help Edson Alvarez with the defensive-midfield duties.

So, in the January transfer window, Moyes struck a deal with Manchester City and gained the services of Kalvin Phillips on loan until the end of the season.

How Kalvin Phillips has performed at his new club

Despite Phillips' addition being a statement signing for the Hammers, his move to the London-based club has left a lot to be desired so far.

During his debut for the club, he was taken off in the 68th minute after making an error which allowed Bournemouth to capitalise and score their only goal of the game.

His second game for West Ham came against Manchester United, where he was only brought on in the 72nd minute. Despite coming on late into the second half, Phillips was once again at fault when he lost the ball in the centre of the park as Alejandro Garnacho eventually scored.

These errors that the defensive-midfielder has made could've potentially been avoided if Moyes had decided to entrust academy graduate, Lewis Orford.

The youngster signed his first professional deal with West Ham last February and has been in stellar form for the U21s this season but hasn't been seen in the first-team picture. Instead, a move for Phillips in January was preferred. He may well come good but those valuable minutes could have been handed to Orford.

Who is Lewis Orford?

Orford is a defensive midfielder who has been with West Ham since the age of five. The youngster's talents have been likened to that of Rice by The Guardian with his range of passing also being 'beyond his years.'

In a feature, writer John Brewin said: 'His height reminds of Rice and Carrick though he exhibits a greater turn of pace than either, with a range of passing beyond his years that has made him the Hammers’ U18 playmaker.'

The talented midfielder was also included in West Ham's first-team when they played against FCSB in the group stage of the Europa Conference League and has already been in the matchday squad on three occasions this term.

As the transfer of Phillips is yet to make a noticeable difference to West Ham's results, it could've been worthwhile for the club to have given the playing time to an academy player such as Orford instead.

As per Transfermarkt, Orford has played a total of 19 games this season for West Ham's youth setup and has contributed to eight goals. Perhaps not as defensive-minded as Phillips, it's clear he can play a pivotal part, notably in the final third.

Indeed, an extended run in the first team could've been highly beneficial for the youngsters' development and would've allowed Moyes to mould Orford into the player he desires.

Man Utd plotting off-field deal to bring rival’s key man to Old Trafford

As Sir Jim Ratcliffe's arrival at Manchester United edges ever closer, those at Old Trafford will be anticipating several changes, whether that be the structure of the club or the players involved, with the potential for some ruthless decisions to be made. The Red Devils will hope that this is finally a turning point in their history after a disastrous era since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson.

On the pitch, Erik ten Hag's side have struggled at times this season, with their results in the Champions League likely resulting in an early exit. Meanwhile, in the Premier League, they sit sixth and three points adrift of the top four following their latest defeat at home to Bournemouth. Ratcliffe will aim to turn United's fortunes around – and one potential appointment would go a long way in achieving that.

Man Utd transfer news

United have suffered without much of a transfer structure over the years, with Old Trafford witnessing some failures to forget under a number of different managers. The latest of those flops has been Jadon Sancho, who is currently frozen out at the club after a falling-out with Ten Hag. Antony's stats show that he hasn't been much better either, with just eight goals in 59 appearances. It's clear that the Red Devils need a sporting director, and Ratcliffe could get one of the most impressive in the Premier League.

Reliable reporter says Man Utd are making move to sign "outstanding" star

Erik ten Hag may have found a solution to his goalscoring problem…

ByTom Cunningham Dec 8, 2023

According to 90min, Manchester United are interested in Newcastle United sporting director Dan Ashworth. Ashworth has a long-standing friendship with Sir Dave Brailsford, who is reportedly playing a significant part in the process of Ratcliffe's arrival and is leading an inquiry into the club's operations to identify various improvements. Ashworth initially earned plaudits for his work at Brighton & Hove Albion, before taking up his current role at Newcastle, where he has continued to impress in the Premier League.

"Highly qualified" Ashworth would transform Man Utd

In desperate need of a sporting director, United would arguably be getting one of the best options in the Premier League with Ashworth, though it remains to be seen whether he would swap St James' Park for Old Trafford. Ashworth recently played down suggestions that he could make a move, saying (via 90min): "I'm really happy, [Newcastle] is a brilliant city, club and project. I'm thoroughly engaged in throwing myself into all of those things and really enjoying the challenge."

One man who has been impressed with the sporting director's work is Gary Neville, who posted on X in early November (formerly Twitter): "On my way up to the gantry last night, I bumped into Dan Ashworth. He transformed the FA’s structure, set Brighton up for this incredible period of success and has now built a strong foundation for the new owners at Newcastle. He’s competent, highly qualified and knows what he’s doing. Will work with his coach, recruitment team and other departments coherently and calmly.

"In the last two matches, Manchester United have played two clubs [Newcastle and Man City] that have installed proper football departments to support the team on the pitch and off it. The complete opposite of United. We haven’t got a sporting director! I used to travel up to Newcastle and feel sorry for their great fans when the energy and enthusiasm had been sapped from them under Mike Ashley.

"It was painful to see. Last night we saw the Theatre of Dreams turn into the Theatre of Nothing. Every single United fan bored and flat. On the pitch, the players in shock, the performances woeful and a manager struggling in front of our eyes. We’ve seen it before, we know how it ends and we’ve had enough."
