Guptill ruled out for six weeks to strengthen hamstrings

Martin Guptill will miss the remainder of the New Zealand season and the start of the IPL to undergo strengthening work on his hamstrings in an attempt to ensure he is fully fit for the Champions Trophy in June.Guptill suffered injuries to both hamstrings in quick succession over the last few months and though he returned in extraordinary style, with his unbeaten 180 off 138 balls in the fourth ODI against South Africa, it has been decided that for his long-term prognosis he needs further rehabilitation. After his century in Hamilton, and a full fifty overs in the field, Guptill said the hamstrings felt “a little stiff” but that it was nothing unexpected after his period out of the game. He did not have any middle time before his return to the one-day side.He will travel to India for the IPL, where he was bought by Kings Punjab XI having been put back in for the second round of the auction, but won’t initially be available for selection and his recovery will be monitored by New Zealand physio Tommy Simsek, who will also be at the tournament.”At the moment Martin isn’t fit to play and the time we give him now to strengthen his hamstrings will play a big role in mitigating future risk too,” Simsek said. “We’ve put a programme in place to make sure that Martin can return to full strength and we’ll continue to monitor him closely.”Mike Hesson, the New Zealand coach, said: “Having Martin fully fit is critical, as we all know the positive influence he has on our side. Martin knows this is an important period to get back to 100% so that he can be fully confident when he is on the park. The Champions Trophy isn’t far away and we obviously want Martin firing on all cylinders for that tournament.”Guptill’s times back on the sidelines means his move into the middle order for Auckland, with a view to pushing for a Test recall in that position, will not happen until the next domestic season. It also means that he will not come into consideration if New Zealand need a replacement for Ross Taylor who retired hurt on the second day in Dunedin with a calf injury. Guptill was dropped from the Test side after the tour of India in October.

Bowlers put Gujarat on top after Gandhi's 169

Gujarat’s bowling unit broke the back of Rest of India’s batting to inflict a collapse of 7 for 56 after Chirag Gandhi’s 169 pushed them to 358 in the morning

The report by Arun Venugopal in Mumbai21-Jan-2017
Scorecard
File photo – Cheteshwar Pujara helped form a solid platform but the rest of his team collapsed around him on the second day•AFPGujarat’s unrelenting discipline with the ball was only matched by Rest of India’s flaccid batting, as they slumped to 206 for 9 on a largely good batting surface at the Brabourne Stadium. Except for a typically sturdy 86 from captain Cheteshwar Pujara, there were few contributions of substance from a powerful batting line-up, as Rest of India fell from 136 for 2 to 192 for 9.On the other hand, Gujarat’s seamers – strongly backed up by left-arm spinner Hardik Patel, who bowled 25 overs on the trot – deprived the batsmen of run-scoring opportunities and ultimately garroted them. The bowlers, marshalled by Chirag Gandhi (169), did their bit with the bat as well. Even as they pushed the team’s total past 350 in over an hour of batting during the first session, they were helped in no small measure by Rest of India’s ordinary fielding on the second day as well.Gujarat’s fielding, in contrast, played a starring role, especially in the dismissals of openers Abhinav Mukund and Akhil Herwadkar. In the ninth over, Abhinav saw there was only a wide slip and a gully, and attempted to steer the ball between them. But, Samit Gohel, at slip, dived to his left to pluck a fine one-handed catch. Herwadkar began a touch nervously and hit a few drives uppishly, but with Pujara batting confidently, he settled down and played a few eye-catching cover drives, often opening the face late to find the gaps. However, he was out against the run of play. Herwadkar went back to Hardik and worked him through the leg side, but Rawal at short leg, with eyes on the ball and low hands, made a tough catch look effortless. For most of the second session, seamers Chintan Gaja, Ishwar Chaudhary and debutant Mohit Thadani bowled with two point fiedlers to Pujara, and tried to provoke him into playing a loose stroke outside off. Pujara, though, was happy leaving deliveries.Karun Nair, though, looked scratchy for the major part of his 45-ball innings. Chaudhary troubled Karun early on with a sequence of in-dippers. Karun’s first few runs came off inside-edges to the leg side; he briefly looked comfortable when he struck two cover drives for fours off successive deliveries from Hardik. Gaja, though, reaped the rewards of Chaudhary’s probing spell (4-0-10-0) and removed Karun in the penultimate over before tea. Karun played away from his body, but the ball shaped in slightly and caught the inside edge, to be snared by Parthiv. Since his unbeaten triple hundred in Chennai, Karun has now only managed scores of 14, 12 and 28 in first-class cricket. From overs 20 to 36 in the post-lunch session, Rest of India, thanks mainly to Pujara’s enterprise, scored 70 runs. Pujara steered, dabbed and late cut the bowlers when they kept it outside off, and tucked it around for singles when they veered straighter. Parthiv spotted this and asked his seamers to bowl to the stumps with the cushion of a four-man leg-side field, especially loaded in front of square.Thadani, whose third spell read 7-3-12-2, was the biggest beneficiary, as he pinged Manoj Tiwary (12) and Wriddhiman Saha (0) in front in the space of four overs. Rest of India managed only 40 runs from the 36th to the 50th overs. Soon, Hardik trapped Kuldeep Yadav lbw after the batsman, initially shaping for the sweep before changing his mind, failed to get his bat down in time. In the next over, Pujara’s resistance came to an end when he was caught down the leg side attempting a pull. Shahbaz Nadeem and Siddarth Kaul didn’t last long, but Pankaj Singh and Mohammed Siraj ensured Gujarat wouldn’t bat again until tomorrow at least.Thadani, 25, said there was some swing on offer throughout the day. “I was bowling around the stumps and was hoping for the ball to move in or out off the seam, but only a few balls came back in,” he said.”Parthiv was my inspiration. During my third spell, the plan was different, but he saw that I was bowling at the stumps and changed the field accordingly for a stump-line.”In the morning, Gandhi realised grafting wasn’t a sustainable strategy with only two wickets left and took his chances with some adventurous strokes. He charged at Pankaj and took two fours off him. Pujara switched from seamers to spinners at both ends, but Gandhi continued to collect boundaries in clusters. When he smashed Kuldeep for a straight six, he had scored exactly 50 percent of Gujarat’s total at that point – 328.After Pujara brought the field in to deny him the single off the last ball, Gandhi jumped out of the crease again and lofted Kuldeep’s flighted delivery over extra cover for four. Three overs later, though, Kaul removed Gandhi to claim his ninth five-for in first-class cricket. Seeing Gandhi walk out of the crease, Kaul pitched it short, and the batsman, trying to work it off his hips, top-edged it back to Kaul. His partnership with a resolute Hardik yielded 72 runs. Thanks to some poor catching from Rest of India, the last-wicket stand lasted for longer than it should have. First, Abhinav dropped Ishwar Chaudhary at third slip, and in the next over, Nadeem put down an even simpler chance at gully offered by Hardik. Chaudhary swung his bat around for a few raspy hits before a Rest of India fielder – Manoj Tiwary – finally held on to a catch.

Misbah has 'no explanation' for Pakistan implosion

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq struggled to explain how his side ended up losing by an innings in a Test which they had begun by declaring on 443

Osman Samiuddin at the MCG30-Dec-2016Edgbaston, Dubai, Sharjah, Christchurch, Hamilton, and now Melbourne: Pakistan’s rise to the No. 1 Test spot and subsequent fall has been punctuated by a series of spectacular batting collapses. On the final day at the MCG, on a still-pristine pitch on which Australia had added 159 runs in the morning in under 30 overs, Pakistan lost their last eight wickets for 100 runs. That sealed their 11th successive Test defeat in Australia and, with it, a chance to go to Sydney with the series still alive.Misbah-ul-Haq, the Pakistan captain, had his own future on his mind, but he struggled to explain how his side ended up losing a Test which they had begun by declaring on 443 by an innings and 18 runs.Pakistan had to bat out a minimum of 67 overs when they began their second innings in a Test in which three days were almost half lost to rain.”There is no explanation,” he said. “Once you are under pressure, from a position when you score [443] in the first innings and are dominating the game, then on the last day you are saving the Test, that pressure sometimes does things like that. And it was sheer pressure. Full credit to Australia, the way they batted and put us under pressure.”Though he acknowledged his side’s batting in pressure situations “is not what it should be”, he did also point towards the limitations of a bowling attack that twice wilted under pressure from Australia’s batsmen. The first time was on the third day when, after a tight opening spell, David Warner and Usman Khawaja rattled along at such speed that they punctured whatever momentum Pakistan had built from Brisbane and their first innings here. Then, on a final day which began with Australia 22 ahead and six wickets down, Pakistan allowed the lead to balloon to 181 half an hour before lunch.”Those two sessions took the game away from us almost,” he said. “From a winning position, you are on the back foot. We just gave the momentum back to Australia. They were a bit lucky they played well, took their chances, and after that we were in no position to attack.”Even today, in the morning session, we could’ve taken a couple of wickets. [Mitchell] Starc played well and that was a big blow for us. If we had taken one more wicket, wrapped the tail up, maybe 50-60 runs deficit, it could have been easy for us to handle the situation.”The taking of wickets has been a particular problem. When Steven Smith declared today, it was the sixth time in the last five Tests Pakistan have played in Australia that the hosts have had the luxury of declaring.Yasir Shah conceded over 200 runs in an innings for the second time this year, continuing a tour in which he has bowled mostly to fields set for run-saving, rather than wicket-taking.”I think as a bowling unit, we couldn’t put pressure,” Misbah said. “When the opposition is playing well and you’re not bowling well, then it is difficult to implement any sort of plan, any sort of strategy. That has been happening to us.”Yasir is a bit low on confidence at the moment. That sometimes doesn’t give you control as a captain. When you have no control, you struggle with your strategies. And it looks to those sitting outside, watching, what’s going on? That’s where I think everything went wrong for us in this Test.”

Man United Eye Move For "Cold" £26m-rated Titan

Manchester United are reportedly showing an interest in Bayern Munich midfielder, Leon Goretzka, according to reports coming out of Germany.

What's the latest on Goretzka to Man United?

As per Sky Sports Germany reporter, Florian Plettenberg, the Red Devils are said to be keeping tabs on the 6 foot 2 sensation ahead of the summer window, with the 28-year-old potentially set to be up for grabs as the Bundesliga giants target a move for West Ham United skipper, Declan Rice.

Writing on Twitter, the transfer insider stated: "X News #Goretzka: ManUtd is monitoring his situation! #MUFC is aware of the fact that his future his uncertain because of #Rice. But no concrete talks or negotiations yet. Goretzka is staying calm and his position is clear: He definitely wants to stay as he identifies 100 % with FC Bayern! And: Rummenigge supports him."

The former Schalke ace – who made the move to the Allianz Arena back in 2018 – was previously a reported target for United back in the summer of 2021, during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's stint in charge.

Should Man United sign Goretzka?

The addition of the towering titan could well prove a real upgrade as far as Erik ten Hag is concerned, with the German giant potentially set to be an ideal replacement for Scott McTominay in the centre of the park.

The latter man – who has been linked with a move to Newcastle United in recent times – was restricted to something of a bit-part role in the 2022/23 campaign after making just ten Premier League starts in total, having previously been branded "not good enough" for the Old Trafford outfit by club legend, Roy Keane.

As such, the 26-year-old could well be shunted down the pecking order even further if Goretzka is to sign on the dotted line, with the Bayern brute seemingly offering greater quality both defensively and in an attacking sense.

Man United's Scott McTominay

That superiority is shown by the fact that the Bochum native – who has been described as being as "cold as ice" by teammate Manuel Neuer – scored three goals and provided two assists in 27 Bundesliga games this season, while also creating seven big chances as a marker of his creative prowess.

McTominay, by contrast, scored just one goal and failed to provide a single assist in his 24 top-flight appearances, while also creating just two big chances as a clear illustration of the Scotland international's lack of attacking threat.

Equally, Goretzka also showed his ball-winning quality after averaging 1.6 tackles and 1.1 interceptions per game in the league, while McTominay averaged just 1.3 and 0.6 for those same two metrics, respectively, under Ten Hag.

The £26m-rated colossus is also seemingly a more dominant and imposing presence in the centre of the park as he also won 67% of his aerial duels in that time, with the current United dud winning just 60% of his aerial duels.

With Goretzka also possessing the benefit of having now won five straight league titles as well as the Champions League, the 50-cap machine would certainly represent a sizeable upgrade for the Carabao Cup winners next season.

Warwickshire sign Olly Stone, aiming for Keaton Jennings

Warwickshire have won the race to sign highly-rated Northamptonshire seamer Olly Stone

Warwickshire have won the race to sign highly-rated Northamptonshire seamer Olly Stone.Stone, a former England U-19 captain, is currently sidelined by injury but is regarded as one of the most exciting fast bowling prospects in the county game and was known to be of interest to at least eight counties. In the end, the prospect of Division One cricket and assurances that he would not be over-bowled sealed the deal for Warwickshire.Stone will not bowl again this season having suffered a freak injury to his anterior cruciate ligament while celebrating a wicket but, aged 22, has gained attention with his pace and control. Warwickshire see his signing as a major coup and regard him as the outstanding fast bowling prospect in the English game. The club also hope to sign a top-order batsman with Keaton Jennings, from Durham, understood to be their No. 1 target. Jennings, the leading run-scorer in the top division of the County Championship this season with five centuries, is aged 24, and seen by Warwickshire as a player with leadership potential. The addition of Stone and Jennings would go some way to re-balance what has become a Warwickshire side top-heavy with players in their mid-30s. It would be interpreted at Edgbaston as quite a coup for a club that has, over recent years, struggled to attract players to Birmingham. In recent times they have missed out on the likes of James Taylor, David Willey, David Sales, Steve Kirby, Alex Gidman and many more.Durham, whose financial issues compromise their ability to offer competitive salaries, have already lost Mark Stoneman to Surrey while several clubs have made approaches to sign Scott Borthwick. It is understood he has held talks with Surrey in the last few days.Warwickshire are set to lose a couple of players, too. Richard Jones has departed for Leicestershire on a two-year deal, while Varun Chopra is talking to several clubs about his options for next year. The club have confirmed that Chopra will not be offered a new contract at the end of this year. A return to Essex appears the most likely option. And while Ian Bell may well return to the club’s wage bill after many years of being covered by a central contract, it seems those costs could be off-set by Chris Woakes going the other way. There is also some uncertainty around the future of Laurie Evans. ESPNcricinfo understands that Evans has asked to be released from his Warwickshire contract due to his frustration at a lack of first team appearances in the County Championship. The 28-year-old is highly rated but, with a middle-order spot at the club blocked by the emergence of Sam Hain and the return of Bell and Jonathan Trott, his opportunities have been limited to a single Championship appearance this season. The club insist they want Evans, who remains an important part of their white ball side, to stay.

West Ham: £61k-p/w Signing Would Be An Ings Upgrade

West Ham United have been linked to a forward ahead of the summer transfer window, with a busy summer expected at the London Stadium.

The primary focus until the break is on the Europa Conference League final, which takes place on June 7th as David Moyes’ side face Fiorentina in the bid to win the club’s first European silverware since 1965.

Despite the hype surrounding the historic final, the Irons have a lot to improve on ahead of next season, having only mathematically survived relegation from the Premier League last weekend.

Most of the focus on West Ham’s transfer news has revolved around the future of midfielder Declan Rice, who is expected to be snatched by Arsenal this summer, however, it’s not just outgoings expected in east London.

News reported this week has revealed the club’s potential plans to bring a forward from the Bundesliga to the club, in a bid to add depth to the squad ahead of the next campaign.

What’s the latest on Alassane Plea to West Ham United?

As reported by Foot Mercato earlier this week, West Ham are reportedly one of the clubs interested in signing Borussia Monchengladbach forward Alassane Plea this summer.

The 30-year-old is wanted by former club Olympique Lyon, however, the report states that the French outfit should expect some rivalry to sign the attacker from the Premier League.

West Ham, along with Crystal Palace and Fulham have “already made some contact” with the player’s representatives, with his value believed to be in the region of €10m – €12m (£8m – £10m).

What could Alassane Plea bring to West Ham United?

Hailed as being “versatile, quick and clever” by Monchengladbach’s former director of sport Max Eberl, the forward could offer a lot to West Ham.

While the Hammers already have a kitted-out left-wing department, which is Plea’s dominant position, the forward has been used through the middle before as a striker, which could make him an attractive player in Moyes’ system.

Current strike options at the club are Michail Antonio and Danny Ings, one being the club’s top goalscorer this season but the other in Ings finding the net just twice in the Premier League since arriving in January.

When comparing the form of both Ings and Plea over the past year, it’s clear to see why the Frenchman is reportedly on West Ham’s radar.

The £61k-per-week ace offers a lot more to an attack than goals, securing nine assists in 20 Bundesliga starts this season, showing his eye for a pass and instinctual nature in the final third.

Having Antonio firing when leading the line could allow Moyes to use the Frenchman as a decoy or as a rotating striker to add competition to the 33-year-old.

The 30-year-old has a lot more in his locker creatively than Ings, as shown through FBref, with the Borussia star averaging 4.67 progressive passes to the Englishman’s 1.26 per 90.

The Lille-born forward also averages two progressive carries per 90 to Ings’ 1.38, showing his ability to float around the attack rather than remain as a stationary striker.

One of the most prominent areas of his game is his playmaking, with him ranking in the top 3% of players in Europe’s top five leagues for his rate of assists, averaging a huge 0.46 assists per 90 – as per FBref.

Moyes could utilise the forwards’ strengths in a way more useful to West Ham than those that Ings portrays, and as such would be a greater signing.

Sheikh Jassim makes second Manchester United offer

Sheikh Jassim has made a second offer to take control at Manchester United, Sky Sports report.

The Lowdown: Slight delay

Jassim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe have been the front runners when it comes to a complete takeover from the Glazers, with both holding Old Trafford talks earlier this month.

However, both missed the deadline to make a second offer for the club on Wednesday in an incredible development, asking for an extension from the Raine Group in New York. That was granted, with Ratcliffe needing less than 24 hours to place his revised bid for United. It went relatively quiet when it came to Jassim’s second bid, but there has now been a development.

The Latest: Second offer

Sky Sports provided an update regarding Jassim and United in the last 24 hours. They said that a new offer has now been submitted, describing it as ‘news that Manchester United fans have been waiting for’.

‘Now the news that Manchester United fans we know have been waiting for and that is that Sheikh Jassim, the Qatari bid, a new bid has now been submitted to buy Manchester United.

‘It went in overnight, the deadline for the second bid was 9pm on Wednesday, an extension was granted. We knew that Sir Jim Ratcliffe had submitted a second bid on Thursday – now we know that Jassim has followed suit.’

The Verdict: Now we wait

It looks as if it is now down to the Glazers to provide feedback to Jassim, Ratcliffe and other parties who have made Old Trafford bids, so it could be an interesting few months.

Fabrizio Romano has stated that Jassim and his group remain confident as they believe their bid is the best one for the club, fans and local community. He also seemingly has a marquee transfer on his radar, should he take over, with Jassim thought to be a huge fan of Jude Bellingham.

That might come as music to Erik ten Hag’s ears, with the manager after a midfielder and a forward this summer, but in regards to a takeover, Jassim may have to remain patient for now.
