Arsenal had the next Eden Hazard but now he’s leaving for pennies

Arsenal's Hale End academy has been the source of great pride for the Gunners in recent years.

It was an illustrious academy anyway, one that brought through Jack Wilshere and helped nurture the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Hector Bellerin.

Yet, more recently, it has produced superstar talent Bukayo Saka, now a two-time England player of the year winner and a Ballon d'Or nominee for the first time.

Emile Smith Rowe, although out of the picture at the moment, is another to have graced Mikel Arteta's first team expertly. Eddie Nketiah is now making a name for himself too, among Gareth Southgate's England set-up for the very first time.

There's even the likes of Folarin Balogun, who has just netted the club a cool £35m after trading north London for the glamour of Monaco.

Arsenal striker Folarin Balogun.

But for those who don't make it, where do they end up? Well, a certain Marcelo Flores, an unknown name to some, is also about to make a move away. Unlike Balogun, however, the club won't be raking in a tremendous fee for the Mexican's services.

Who is Marcelo Flores?

Flores is a 19-year-old attacking midfielder or winger who has been with Arsenal since 2019 after moving from Ipswich Town's youth academy.

Standing at 5 foot 7, the Canadian-born Mexico international is a lively figure but has never quite been able to make the grade since moving to the club.

Hopes were high for a talent who was looking to follow in the footsteps of fellow Mexican Carlos Vela by making a first-team appearance. That, however, never came for the teenager who now sees his future away from the English capital.

Capped three times at international level, there is still plenty of potential waiting to be unlocked in the youngster but with such a strong attacking pecking order at Arteta's disposal, an opportunity to play looked extremely unlikely.

How many goals has Marcelo Flores scored for Arsenal?

Flores' time with Arsenal's youth team saw him produce terrific moments of creativity and goal-scoring, with the attacker finding the net 15 times in 48 outings across U18 and U21 level, also chipping in with six assists.

That isn't prolific by any means but his ability to produce ingenious moments out of nothing made him stand above many of his peers in the academy.

A loan move at Real Oviedo hoped to give him some much-needed experience at first team level last season, but his spell with the Spanish second division side didn't go according to plan.

Flores returned to England this summer having failed to score across 15 appearances, with just one assist being registered.

Such form was disappointing for a young individual who was raved about when he was in the infancy of his Arsenal career.

Indeed, Flores was named among the Guardian's best 60 young talents in the world in 2020, with journalist Tom Marshall waxing lyrical.

"A versatile attacking midfielder, Flores compares his game to Philippe Coutinho and Eden Hazard," the writer noted in the player's profile.

Also among that list three years ago was Jamal Musiala of Bayern Munich fame, Leeds United's Wilfried Gnonto and PSG's Xavi Simons. Fine company indeed.

Where is Marcelo Flores now?

Reports on Thursday morning indicate that the Mexican is now permanently on his way out of Arsenal after four years in the academy.

Indeed, Marca reports via other sources that he is set to join Tigres in Mexico, a move that has been described as one that will cost a 'very low price'.

Edu and co could never have expected to rake in a huge fee to the tune of Balogun's, but either way, it's likely they have made a profit.

After all, the Gunners would have signed the forward on a free transfer from Ipswich all those years ago. It marks smart business, therefore, even if his current deal wasn't expected to conclude until 2025.

Flores will likely live without regret but there must be something in him that wishes he lived up to the billing he previously received. Indeed, it's likely the Hazard and Coutinho inside him will never be truly unlocked.

Appointment of Dr Phil Jauncey on a short-term basis comes following a recommendation from head coach Chandika Hathurusingha

Andrew Fidel Fernando04-Jan-2018Sri Lanka Cricket have hired the services of performance psychologist Dr. Phil Jauncey on a short-term basis, at the behest of new head coach Chandika Hathurusingha. Crystal Palace In Running For £1.5m Gem To Soften Zaha Blow

Crystal Palace have officially lost Wilfried Zaha to Galatasaray and are now sweating over the future of Chelsea-linked winger Michael Olise.

However, Brazilian outlet O Globo reports that Palace may be about to bring in a new signing of their own in highly-rated young full-back Mateo Ponte.

What is the latest Crystal Palace transfer news?

Jefferson Lerma is the only new face through the Selhurst Park door this summer to date, while Zaha, James McArthur, Luka Milivojevic and Jack Butland are among those to have departed.

Losing Zaha is undoubtedly a major blow, with the Ivory Coast international opting to put pen to paper with Galatasaray rather than prolong his stay in South London – where he has spent 13 seasons across two spells – by signing a new deal.

While the relatively unknown Ponte is not exactly a like-for-like replacement for wide forward Zaha, the 20-year-old is well thought of in South America and would help lift the mood of supporters.

It is claimed that Brazilian outfit Botafogo are close to signing Ponte from Uruguayan side Danubio for around £1.5m, but that could ultimately pave the way for a move to Palace.

That is due to the Eagles, as well as Ligue 1 side Lyon, being part-owned by John Textor, who also has a stake in Botafogo. Ponte is said to be open to using Botafogo as a temporary stepping stone in his quest to play in Europe.

Is Mateo Ponte a good player?

Ponte has made 22 league appearances for Danubio, but it was with his country at the recent U20 World Cup finals that he caught the eye of those outside of South America.

The youngster started five times, and helped his side keep four clean sheets in the process, as Uruguay beat Italy in the final to win the tournament for the first time.

Described by World Football Index writer Tom Robinson as "one of Uruguay's most consistent performers" at the tournament, right-back Ponte now appears ready to make the next step up.

Crystal Palace'sWilfriedZaha

Ponte has scored one goal in his seven Uruguayan Primera Division appearances this season.

While it is incredibly difficult to compare the two divisions, Tyrick Mitchell and Joel Ward – Palace's two most used full-backs in the Premier League last term – scored a combined one goal between them in 2022-23.

The Uruguayan talent has also assisted one goal, showing that he is happy to get forward when required. As per Transfermarkt, Ponte is also capable of playing on the right-hand side of midfield, providing Roy Hodgson with some welcome versatility should he indeed join.

In terms of other qualities, World Football Index points out that Ponte is a strong tackler and has an impressive long throw – something Odsonne Edouard and Jean-Philippe Mateta will hope to take full advantage of.

Palace will surely sign bigger names between now and the end of the transfer window on September 1st, but bringing in Ponte will go a long way to showing that they have a long-term plan in a summer that has seen them lose one of their all-time best players.

Sriram, Robin Singh to coach SA T20 franchises

S Sriram and Robin Singh are set to coach Jo’burg Giants and Bloem City Blazers respectively in the inaugural edition of South Africa’s T20 Global League in November.Sriram, who played eight ODIs for India between 2000 and 2004, is currently the spin consultant with the Australian team on their tour of Bangladesh. It is a role he performed during their tours of India and Sri Lanka last season, as well as the World T20 in 2016. Giants, incidentally, is owned by GMR, the parent group that owns Delhi Daredevils, where Sriram has worked as an assistant coach.Robin Singh, who played 136 ODIs and one Test for India, has coached T20 sides across the globe in the past. He was the head coach of Deccan Chargers in 2008 before assuming duties with Mumbai Indians, with whom he has been associated since, first as head coach and later as batting coach. West Ham Could Sign Big Scamacca Upgrade In £8.5m Gem

West Ham United have rightly prioritised signing a holding midfielder to replace Declan Rice this summer, but the need for a new striker is surely very high on David Moyes' list of targets.

Who are West Ham interested in signing?

Denis Zakaria appears to be on his way to the London Stadium from Juventus – offsetting the £105m departure of Rice to Arsenal – as does Real Betis centre-back Luiz Felipe.

In terms of attacking players, though, options appear to be few and far between as far as West Ham are concerned. United appear to have missed out to Newcastle United over the signing of Harvey Barnes from Leicester City, whilst links with the likes of Callum Hudson-Odoi and Matheus Franca have gone quiet.

However, according to Football Insider, Moyes is pushing hard for West Ham to sign Strasbourg striker Habib Diallo.

The report suggests that Brentford are also showing a strong interest, with Thomas Frank's side on the lookout for a striker to fill in – and possibly then play alongside – Ivan Toney during his spell in the stands for breaching the FA's betting rules.

Who is Strasbourg striker Habib Diallo?

Diallo is a man in demand after scoring 20 goals in 37 Ligue 1 appearances last season, making him the sixth-highest scoring player in the French top flight, with Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe (29) leading the way.

The 28-year-old was responsible for 39% of all of Strasbourg's Ligue 1 goals last season, as per WhoScored – only Alexandre Lacazette (42%) and Folarin Balogun (47%), for Lyon and Reims respectively, were more relied upon by their teams.

According to FBref's player comparison tool, Diallo's statistical profile is very similar to that of Fulham's Aleksandar Mitrovic – a player West Ham would no doubt love to have up top next season.

Indeed, the pair scored at the exact same rate of 0.63 league goals per 90 minutes last season – Diallo in Ligue 1 and Mitrovic in the Premier League – while both chipped in with one assist each.

Aleksandar Mitrovic

Diallo found the target from more of his shots (40% compared to 31.8% for Mitrovic), though there was very little between them in terms of aerial duels won (46.1% for Diallo, 48.8% for Mitrovic).

Indeed, FBref ranks Diallo in the top 11% of all forwards across Europe's top five leagues for aerial duels won last season (4.22 per 90 minutes), while he is in the top 17% in terms of non-penalty goals scored (0.53 per 90).

To put that in some perspective, Gianluca Scamacca – the flop striker that Diallo would effectively be signed to replace at West Ham – ranked in the bottom 41% in both metrics with 1.65 and 0.29 respectively.

Thought to be available for around £20m this summer, West Ham could bring in a player who boasts similar qualities to Mitrovic – and is therefore a huge upgrade on what they have.

Recently described as a "reliable" striker by Strasbourg head coach Frederic Antonetti, moving for Diallo seems a no-brainer as far as the Irons are concerned.

Fabrizio Romano Drops Key Liverpool Midfield Transfer Update

Liverpool are "working on" more midfield signings during the summer transfer window regardless of who leaves the club, and Romeo Lavia is definitely a target, according to renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Which players are leaving Liverpool?

The Reds are going through a tumultuous time of things at the moment, with a huge amount of drama seemingly happening in their midfield.

Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have all departed Anfield after their contracts expires last month, while Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai have joined from Brighton and RB Leipzig respectively, which certainly seem like positive moves.

All of a sudden however, a fresh twist has seen both Jordan Henderson and Fabinho strongly linked with moves to Saudi Arabia, while Thiago has been backed to make a return to Barcelona before the 2023/24 season gets underway.

Liverpool clearly struggled greatly in the middle of the park last season, with the lack of legs and quality in that area playing a key role in the Reds finishing fifth in the Premier League, but such drastic changes as this still could leave a mark.

Now, a new update has emerged regarding Liverpool's midfield situation – one that suggests the Merseysiders' incoming transfer business is far from over this summer.

romeo-lavia-premier-league-transfers-man-united

What's the latest on Liverpool's midfield signings?

Writing on Twitter, Romano said that the Reds are still eyeing a move for highly-rated Southampton youngster Lavia, and that he is unlikely to be the only other addition to the midfield:

"Liverpool are actively working to sign a new midfielder – this has always been the plan even before Al Ettifaq bid for Henderson. Romeo Lavia on the list since two weeks ago but still no official bid. Liverpool are also working on other options."

This is good to hear, with the idea of Liverpool moving on so many midfielders and not plugging the gap something that would be negligent from owners FSG. If such a high amount of outgoings occurs, there simply have to be a similar number of incomings, or the Reds could again find themselves short of options in the middle of the park despite improving the average quality.

Lavia seemingly remains the top target currently, and he has the ability to be Fabinho's long-term successor in the No.6, having performed so well there for Southampton last season despite their relegation to the Championship, averaging 2.1 tackles per match in the league.

There is an element of sense in selling Henderson, Fabinho and Thiago, should the right offers come along, but equally, moving on all three feels like too big a change, having a negative impact on the experience within the squad, especially with Milner, Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain all not around, too.

Selling one and keeping two feels like the most sensible option, with the remaining pair staying on as a squad options rather than regular starters, with Mac Allister and Szoboszlai going straight into the first-choice starting lineup alongside hopefully one other new face.

It is going to be massive period in Liverpool's summer coming up, and with the new Premier League season not too far away now, these issues have to be resolved sooner rather than later, in order for Jurgen Klopp's men to be primed for an assault on the title.

McClenaghan, Milne and Anderson return for Champions Trophy

Fast bowlers Mitchell McClenaghan and Adam Milne, and allrounder Corey Anderson have been recalled to New Zealand’s ODI squad for the 2017 Champions Trophy, after proving their fitness in the ongoing Indian Premier League.Milne has played two matches for Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2017 so far, bowling his full quota of overs with returns of three wickets at an economy rate of 8.75. McClenaghan, who impressed with Mumbai Indians last season, has turned in another good performance, bowling 28 overs and taking 12 wickets at an economy rate of 8.67. Anderson, playing for Delhi Daredevils, has continued to take on bowling responsibilities – he has bowled a total of four overs across two innings so far, continuing his short bowling stints with Northern Districts in Plunket Shield matches this season.New Zealand’s squad comprises five specialist batsmen, four pace bowlers, three seam-bowling allrounders, two spinners and one specialist wicketkeeper in Luke Ronchi, with Tom Latham as a back-up option behind the stumps.New Zealand coach Mike Hesson said the three players returning from injury had done everything possible in a bid to be fit for selection.”It’s been good to see all three back on the park and bowling; together they add a lot of experience to our squad,” Hesson said. “Mitch and Adam have been running in well, and Corey has shown he’ll be capable of providing an option with the ball.”We believe it’s an exciting squad; an experienced squad, and one that has the batting power and the bowling variations to prevail in a potentially high-scoring tournament.”Having four all-rounders (including Mitchell Santner) certainly helps with balance, and the return of Mitch and Adam will offer options with the new ball, through the middle of the innings, and in the death overs.”Mitchell McClenaghan has proved his fitness with steady performances for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2017•BCCI

Beset by injuries, both McClenaghan and Milne have not played international cricket since the World T20 in India last year. Hamstring, side and elbow injuries meant that Milne played only one more match in 2016 – an IPL game for Royal Challengers – after the World T20, before making a return to competitive cricket in the Plunket Shield first-class tournament in March.McClenaghan’s last ODI appearance came against Pakistan in January 2016, before an eye injury ruled him out of the subsequent one-day series against Australia. McClenaghan returned to play in the World T20, and impressed in IPL 2016 with 17 wickets in 14 matches. A pelvis injury, picked up during a county stint, ruled him out of the India tour in October last year, and an ankle niggle kept him out of New Zealand’s international assignments this year.McClenaghan later reacted to the news on Twitter with a Terminator-like response writing “nice to be back”.In Anderson’s case, the New Zealand selectors and Hesson were happy with his return to bowling duties. The recurrence of a back injury during the World T20 had kept Anderson out of tours of Zimbabwe and South Africa last year and he was picked for the ODIs against India as a specialist batsman. He played four of the five matches in India and also bowled four overs in the fifth ODI in Visakhapatnam. However, with the selectors considering him a specialist batsman in view of his long-term injury issues, Anderson missed New Zealand’s subsequent ODI series against Australia, Bangladesh and South Africa. He was considered for T20 internationals, playing the home series against Bangladesh and South Africa. The three players have replaced Dean Brownlie, Lockie Ferguson and Matt Henry from the squad for the home series against South Africa earlier this year. The only other change was the inclusion of offspinner Jeetan Patel in place of legspinner Ish Sodhi.New Zealand are in Group A of the Champions Trophy and will play their first match, against Australia, on June 2, with matches against England and Bangladesh on June 6 and 9 respectively. Prior to the tournament, they are scheduled to play two warm-up matches – against India on May 28 and Sri Lanka on May 30.New Zealand will play an ODI tri-series in Ireland ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy and Hesson confirmed a small group of players from that squad were likely to remain in England as cover during the tournament.

Man United Interested In Signing 19 y/o "Hurricane"

Manchester United are interested in signing teenage forward Adama Bojang, according to Fabrizio Romano.

What’s the latest transfer news on Man United and Bojang?

The Red Devils and Erik ten Hag have made a new forward one of their transfer priorities this summer, with Wout Wegorst’s loan spell coming to an end.

Anthony Martial’s future is also up in the air, which could leave Ten Hag with no senior striker on the books ahead of the 2023/24 season.

A number of marquee names have been linked with a move to Old Trafford, including Harry Kane. Reports have suggested that Man United could be tempted back into a move for the Tottenham star if they lower their £100m asking price to £80m.

Meanwhile, there has been speculation that Man United are in the lead to sign Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos, and alongside a proven high-profile attacking addition, it looks as if a lesser-known final third name is also on the agenda.

Romano took to Twitter in the last 48 hours to share an update he’s heard on Bojang. He revealed that those at Old Trafford are “now showing interest” in signing the “huge talent”, however, German sides Eintracht Frankfurt and RB Leipzig are also keen alongside French outfit Strasbourg.

“Manchester United are among clubs now showing interest in Gambia 2004 born talent Adama Bojang.

“Understand Eintracht Frankfurt and RB Leipzig are pushing to close deal for Bojang, considered a huge talent. Strasbourg are also monitoring the situation.”

Erik ten Hag

Who is Adama Bojang?

Bojang is just 19 years of age and is an out-and-out centre-forward who plies his trade for Steve Bicko FC in The Gambia.

Standing at 6ft 3, he has been nicknamed “The Gambian Hurricane” and an absolute physical specimen in the media, blessed with both speed and strength. Bojang has also been praised for his good anticipation skills and composure when presented with chances in the box, drawing slight comparisons to Manchester City’s Erling Haaland.

He appears to be catching the eye all across Europe, so a move to Manchester could be a shrewd one by Old Trafford officials, and by the looks of things, it could be another to monitor over the coming months.
