Maroof shines in Pakistan's comprehensive win

ScorecardBismah Maroof’s all-round performance helped Pakistan Women secure a 38-run victory over Ireland Women in the one-off T20I in Dublin. Maroof scored a 30-ball 38 and took three wickets for 21 runs with her legspin as Ireland were dismissed for 110 in their pursuit of 149.Ireland began their chase slowly, losing opener Isobel Joyce in the second over with just 8 runs on the board, but they recovered well, as Clare Shillington and Eimear Richardson added 54 runs for the second wicket before Shillington was bowled for 33 by offspinner Nida Dar.Shillington’s dismissal triggered a dramatic collapse, as Ireland lost the remaining eight wickets for just 48 runs, with none of the other batters reaching double digits. The spinners proved effective for Pakistan, as Maroof, Dar and left-arm spinner Sadia Yousuf took seven wickets between them and conceded 57 runs in their 11 overs.Earlier, Pakistan got off to a shaky start after choosing to bat first, as opener Asmavia Iqbal was run out off the second ball of the innings. Javeria Rauf and Nain Abidi fought back with a 41-run second-wicket stand before Rauf was bowled by medium-pacer Louise McCarthy. Abidi added another 40 runs for the third wicket with Maroof but fell for 36, offering a return catch to medium-pacer Melissa Scott-Hayward, with the score at 81 for 3.Maroof struck four fours during her knock, as she paired with Nahida Khan to add 27 off just 19 balls for the fifth wicket, taking Pakistan to a score of 148 for 7 in their 20 overs.Medium-pacer Laura Delany was the most successful bowler for the hosts, ending with figures of 2-0-15-3.The two teams will play each other in the first of two ODIs in Dublin on Wednesday.

Campbelle ton in vain as Sri Lanka down West Indies

Shemaine Campbelle’s rear guard 105 could not save her team as the Sri Lankan women chased their target inside 46 overs

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Feb-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsDespite West Indies’ Shemaine Campbelle scoring 105 after an early collapse, Sri Lanka leveled the three-match series at 1-1, chasing down West Indies’ total of 180 in Dambulla. West Indies elected to bat, but had a horror start as Udeshika Prabodhani took three quick wickets to help reduce West Indies to 7 for 4 and then 23 for 5.From there Deandra Dottin and Shemaine Campbelle put together a 45-run stand to try and steady the ship, before Dottin was dismissed. A further 110 runs were added with Anisa Mohammed before Campbelle was finally out for 105. West Indies finished on 180, with Prabodhani and Sripali Weerakkody claiming three wickets each.Sri Lanka’s chase started in omnious fashion, as opener Chamari Polgampola was dismissed with no runs as yet scored. Chamari Atapattu and Deepika Rasangika then put on 40 runs, before two wickets fell in the same over to leave Sri Lanka at a precarious 40 for 3. A 60-run partnership between Shashikala Siriwardene and Dilani Manodara for the fifth wicket though helped Sri Lanka regain control of the match, and they completed the chase inside of 46 overs.

A Lusa e a Portuguesa Santista duelarão no Canindé.

– O Marítimo disputa a primeira divisão do Campeonato Português.

– A perspectiva é a melhor possível.

Syed Shahid Akbar dies at 54

Syed Shahid Akbar, a Hyderabad prodigy in the ’70s, has died of a multiple organ failure at the age of 54. Akbar’s is one of the more poignant stories of what could have been. His contemporaries all expected him to play for India, but Akbar couldn’t quite make it. He ended with just 31 first-class matches, and a highest score of 97.He was a dashing left-hand opening batsman, and an electric fielder in the days before Mohammad Azharuddin had arrived, “the best in Hyderabad in those days”. Harsha Bhogle, who played Universities cricket with Akbar, says observers in Hyderabad cricket circles used to imagine him opening with Sunil Gavaskar even before he had made his Ranji debut, at the age of 18, in 1976.Arshad Ayub, former India offspinner, was a dear friend and colleague. He played with Akbar in school, in university, and for Hyderabad. He regrets they didn’t do it together for India. He remembers Akbar as a nice person, whom he never saw “even raise his voice to anybody”. Ayub says, “He was probably the best talent around during the time. Unfortunate that he didn’t make the grade.”Akbar played his last first-class game in 1984, and faded away. He kept working at State Bank of India before taking voluntary retirement. Ayub says he wasn’t very social after his cricketing days, but didn’t look back with regret. He kept watching a lot of cricket, both on TV and in Hyderabad, and would discuss a lot with Ayub. He remained a voracious reader, and would share the books with Ayub after finishing. Ayub is left with a valuable gift: all the books Akbar shared with him.Akbar is survived by his wife, and a daughter who lives in Australia.

Vermeulen ton sets up big win for Rhinos

Round-up of the third round of the Logan Cup matches

ESPNcricinfo staff16-Nov-2012
ScorecardA century by Mark Vermeulen and an effective second-innings bowling performance led to Mid West Rhinos’ 323-run victory over Mashonaland Eagles in Harare. The contest was even after the first innings, with Rhinos gaining a slender lead of 20 runs. But Vermeulen, opener Vusi Sibanda – who scored 89 – and captain Brendon Taylor guided them to 433 for 7 before declaring the innings 25 overs into the final session on the third day. Eagles were derailed by six wickets from seamers Neville Madziva and Ed Rainsford, and folded after 46 overs on the final day. After being put in to bat, Rhinos were struggling after regular strikes from Eagles but half-centuries from Vermeulen and Simon Mugava, and a knock of 42 from middle-order batsman Malcolm Waller, guided them to 265. Eagles’ reply progressed similarly as No. 7 Prosper Utseya, who scored 77, No. 9 Kyle Jarvis, who had taken four wickets earlier, and opener Chamu Chibhabha led them to 245. Seamer Michael Chinouya claimed five wickets, following on from the ten-for he took against Rocks last week. The balance of the game shifted when a 144-run second-wicket stand between Sibanda and Vermeulen was followed by a 134-run stand between Vermeulen and Taylor. At 304 for 2, Rhinos were in a position to set a huge target for their opponents, which was ultimately 435. Eagles couldn’t bat to save the game or try for an improbable win, and ended up crashing to a big defeat.
ScorecardAn unbeaten 188 and five wickets by allrounder Glen Querl helped Matabeleland Tuskers to an easy ten-wicket victory in Bulawayo. A 228-run first-innings lead, helped by Querl’s ton and seamer Chris Mpofu’s six wickets, helped them gain the big win despite a strong second innings by Rocks.Mpofu ran through the top order and the lower order to help dismiss Rocks for 152 in their first innings. The last six wickets fell for 21 runs.Tuskers built on that performance to set a strong total. Querl, who came in to bat at No. 3, played an aggressive knock, making his first first-class century and led Tuskers to a massive lead. He scored at a strike-rate of 84.68 and ran out of partners, remaining unbeaten 12 short of his double-century. His two major partnerships, both worth more than a 100 runs, came with opener Terry Duffin, and with wicketkeeper Charles Coventry.Rocks were in danger of losing by an innings but that didn’t happen thanks to a much-improved batting performance in the second innings. Wicketkeeper Richmond Mutumbami and Prince Masvaure scored half-centuries, with Masvaure remaining unbeaten at the end of the innings. However, with no one going on to score a big century, the small target of 65 wasn’t going to challenge Tuskers, who eclipsed it without the loss of any wicket in the 16th over of their innings.

IPCC will not investigate Maynard death

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has confirmed that it has handed responsibility for investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Tom Maynard back to the Metropolitan police. The matter had been passed on to the IPCC has a matter of course, after Maynard was found dead on tube tracks near Wimbledon Park station on Monday, having been pulled over by police while driving in the early hours of the morning. Maynard, the 23-year-old Surrey batsman, subsequently abandoned his car and fled the scene. However, the police regulator will not investigate the case further, as Maynard eluded the chasing officers before his body was discovered almost an hour later.”The IPCC has assessed the referral from the Metropolitan Police Service regarding the death of a 23-year-old man,” an IPCC statement said. “The police evidence is that at 4.13am officers saw a car being driven erratically which they followed.”The driver then decamped and after a short chase on foot, officers lost sight of him and had no further contact. The man appears to have been hit by a train at 5.04am. In the circumstances the IPCC has referred this matter back to the MPS. British Transport Police will prepare a file for the coroner.”Maynard’s death was marked by a minute’s silence at The Oval, his home ground, before the start of the second ODI between England and West Indies. Tom, the son of former England and Glamorgan batsman Matthew Maynard, has been the subject of tributes and messages from former players and members of the cricketing community and his family issued a statement on Tuesday, expressing their thanks and asking for privacy. The statement, issued through the British Transport Police (BTP), said: “The Maynard family would like to thank everyone for the many messages of support following Tom’s tragic death in London yesterday morning.”As you can appreciate, the news has come as a devastating blow and although the family is grateful for all the kind messages of sympathy, we would ask that we can be left to grieve in private at this very difficult and sad time for us.”

If learning quickly is the secret to success, it should be no surprise that Kevin Pietersen has enjoyed such a fine career. Pietersen has not played on too many surfaces like this in recent years. This New Road pitch is slow, low and offering seam assistance to the bowlers and his second innings here was only his seventh in championship cricket since he became a Test player in 2005.But, having fallen in Surrey’s first innings when he was drawn into a loose drive against one that left him – the sort of shot that may well have brought four on the flat tracks of Delhi – Pietersen learned the lessons and demonstrated his fine form with a much-improved second innings performance. Coming in with his side in some peril, against a ball just 37 deliveries old and with his team two down and 161 behind, he took the game by the scruff of the neck and may well have played its defining innings. Playing straight, advancing down the pitch to negate the seam movement, leaving anything away from his body and showing the confidence to hit the ball over the top when the opportunity arose, was his highest first-class score for Surrey and his highest championship score since 2008. It was a performance that bodes well for England. He will face sterner tests. In the absence of Alan Richardson, who was forced off the pitch with a shoulder injury in just the third over of Surrey’s second innings, the lack of depth in Worcestershire’s bowling was harshly exposed. With David Lucas and Richard Jones resting, Worcestershire were obliged to rely upon James Cameron’s medium pace and Moeen Ali’s off-spin. At one stage Pietersen plundered them for 31 in 11 deliveries, with five fours and a six coming in a ten-ball spell. It was like watching a lion wrestle a lamb.Pietersen played a key part in much improved Surrey second innings performance. Having been obliged to follow-on 172 runs behind, combative contributions from Pietersen, Tom Maynard and Rory Hamilton-Brown raised the prospect that Surrey may yet achieve only their second win having been forced to follow-on since 1868; the previous occasion came when they defeated Gloucestershire in 1995. No side has achieved that in the championship since Kent beat Essex in 2009. The loss of Richardson, whose 73 wickets last season played such an enormous part in Worcestershire avoiding relegation, is quite colossal. A scan showed fluid on the shoulder and a decision will be made in the morning whether to risk him. It seems most unlikely he will bowl again in this game. The trio of Pietersen, Hamilton-Brown and Maynard summed up the Surrey method of tackling adversity: if in doubt, give it a clout. Pietersen reached his half-century in 49 balls, Maynard, who treated a tired attack with disdain, made his a ball quicker and Hamilton-Brown, who thumped four of his first five balls for four, took 67. With the sun out, the ball softer and Worcestershire tiring, it was hard to avoid the conclusion that the game had turned by stumps.”KP is clearly in a very good place at the moment,” Chris Adams, Surrey’s team director said afterwards. “He is very confident, very happy with his game and is striking the ball very well. He went out with one view in mind – to play a positive innings – and it gave us the momentum. We are one session away from being in the stronger position.”Who knows where this game will end up but the thought did cross my mind that the best way of winning was to follow-on. We have all been in a situation where you have to chase down 140-150 in a couple of sessions on a wearing pitch that is getting a little bit more inconsistent in bounce, and if we can find ourselves in that position I will back us rather than Worcester.”Surrey’s first innings – a sorry affair characterised by a lack of technique or application from their batsmen – was worth only 113. Even that flattered them, though. Had Daryl Mitchell, at second slip, held on to chances offered by Rudolph on one and seven – Lucas was the unfortunate bowler on each occasion – Surrey would surely have failed to reach 100. As it was, from the depths of 43 for 8, a ninth-wicket stand of 60 saved at least a few blushes. Rudolph was last man out.Worcestershire’s bowlers deserve credit, too. Lucas and Jones, in particular, bowled beautifully, with the former swinging the ball with excellent control and the latter finding seam and swing movement at a sharpish pace. Lucas tired noticeably as the day wore on but Jones, who claimed eight wickets of the 14 to fall, demonstrated impressive stamina and continued to trouble batsmen throughout the day. This was an especially difficult day for Mark Ramprakash. Suffering a heavy cold, he was dismissed for a pair – only the third in a magnificent 26-year first-class career and the second in the championship (the other way came when Mark Ilott trapped him lbw twice for Essex in 1996) – in a miserable four hour period. Some will look at his average for this season – just 7.75 – check his age – now 42 – and draw conclusions about his fading powers. The sun is, no doubt, setting on a remarkable career but it would be wrong to write off Ramprakash just yet. In the first innings here he received a very fine ball that swung in sharply and beat his perfectly respectable forward defensive. In the second he walked after gloving one down the leg side. As Steve Rhodes put it “He’s had some very good balls and very bad luck.” The story of Ramprakash’s career isn’t over just yet; nor is this match.

Yasir Hameed shines in rain-ravaged game

A round-up of the third day of the fourth round of Pentangular Cup matches

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Feb-2012The contest between Baluchistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Province (KPP) finally began after two rained-out days at the Arbab Niaz Stadium in Peshawar. After KPP were inserted, Yasir Hameed scored a fluent 150, while Adnan Raees hit an unbeaten fifty to help KPP along to 265 for 4 at stumps, with one day to play. Baluchistan’s Ahmed Raza did most of the damage, picking up three wickets with his left-arm spin.At the Sind v Federal Areas match at the Rawalpindi Stadium, it was another wet day with no play possible.

Anjum's six-for gives ZTBL victory

Iftikhar Anjum picked up six wickets to lead Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited to an innings-and-28-run win over State Bank of Pakistan at the Diamond Club Ground in Islamabad. Opener Mohtashim Ali was the only batsman to offer any resistance, battling his way to 51 as wickets tumbled around him. The next highest score was 18, as Anjum struck regularly to deny SBP any momentum. He ended proceedings by bowling No.11 Saad Altaf first ball to finish with figures of 6 for 37 as SBP folded for 123 in their second innings. The victory takes ZTBL to joint-first in the points table with 57, tied with Pakistan International Airlines.A confident half-century from Nadeem Akhtar led Abbottabad to a six-wicket victory over Rawalpindi at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. The day began brightly for Rawalpindi, as the overnight pair of Jamal Anwar and Yasim Murtaza took their side past 200 with some aggressive batting, both scoring half-centuries at quicker than a run-a-ball. Their dismissals, within a run of each other, sucked the belief out of Rawalpindi and the last five wickets fell for just 45 runs. Ikramullah Khan made the vital breakthroughs, snapping up Anwar for 51 and then Murtaza for 57. Abbottabad made a horror start to their chase, losing three of their top four batsmen for just 15, but Akhtar and Wajad Ali counterattacked. By the time Ali fell lbw for 48, his side were in sight of victory and Akhtar took his side home. They needed just 22.5 overs to make 158, with Akhtar unbeaten on 83 from just 66 balls, having struck 12 fours and two sixes.Hasan Raza and Fahad Masood combined to lead Habib Bank to a surprise victory over table-toppers Pakistan International Airlines by 243 runs at the Lahore City Cricket Association Ground. Captain Hasan Raza’s unbeaten 141 lifted HBL to 361 in their second-innings, leaving PIA to chase 306 for victory. They never got close as Masood ripped through their top order to leave them gasping at 39 for 6. The final four wickets offered little resistance as PIA disintegrated for 62 and crashed to their first loss of the season. Masood finished with 6 for 28 from 11 overs.Faisalabad‘s bowlers fought back on the third day at the Jinnah Stadium but the massive first-innings deficit meant they still ended the day with 380 runs required to beat Sialkot and eight wickets in hand. Sialkot made a strange decision not to enforce the follow-on, despite securing a 279-run first innings lead and the fact that their bowlers had just bowled 6.5 overs in the morning. They batted for 45.3 overs instead and Faisalabad restricted them to 147 for 7 on which score they declared. Mohammad Ayub was aggressive and scored 84 off 116 balls but medium-pacer Naseer Akram and left-arm spinner Shoaib Shah struck regularly, and ensured the run-rate was just 3.23. The big first-innings lead, though, meant Faisalabad were left chasing a huge total, and they lost their openers to medium-pacer Mohammad Imran in the 13 overs they had to bat at the end of the day.Contributions from Mohammad Kashif and Mohammad Ijaz, and regular strikes from the bowlers helped Islamabad extend their advantage over Karachi Blues at the National Stadium. Karachi finished the day still five runs behind with six wickets in hand in their second innings. Kashif and Ijaz took Islamabad’s score from 301 for 6 overnight to 398. Kashif scored 51 off 92 balls while Ijaz took 121 balls to score 45. Azam Hussain dismissed Ijaz and completed a five-wicket haul. Karachi’s second innings was hampered by wickets falling at regular intervals. Asad Baig scored 50 but none of the other batsmen could kick on from starts and Karachi ended the day on 129 for 4.Khurram Manzoor made his third hundred of the season as National Bank of Pakistan extended their advantage over Water and Power Development Authority to 303 runs with four wickets in hand at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. WAPDA started the day in a strong position at 186 for 3, but lost two early wickets to slip to 196 for 5. A sixth-wicket partnership of 51 between Ali Azmat (34) and Bilal Khilji (22) temporarily right the ship, before the last five wickets tumbled for 25 runs, giving NBP a first-innings lead of 88. After Umar Amin retired hurt without facing a ball, Manzoor took control, lashing a dozen fours as he raced to 101 from 119 balls before being bowled by Ali Azmat. NBP ended the day on 215 for 6 with one day to go.
