Barisal named fourth semi-finalist after much confusion

It was initially announced that Chittagong Kings would play Duronto Rajshahi in the first semi-final. After meetings late into the night, however, the BPL announced that Barisal Burners, and not Chittagong, were through

Start time 1400 local (0800 GMT)
Big PictureThe first semi-final of the BPL will have the team that finished first in the league playing the team that finished fourth. Duronto Rajshahi finished first, with 14 points, but until 2.00 am on the morning of the semi-final, it wasn’t clear who finished fourth.Initially, on Sunday, it was announced that Barisal Burners were through to the semis, after their victory against Chittagong Kings, on the basis of net run-rate. At that point, the other two spots were going to be contested between Chittagong, Khulna Royal Bengals and Dhaka Gladiators. On Monday, after Dhaka lost narrowly to Rajshahi and Khulna beat Sylhet Royals, Khulna went to second place with 12 points, leaving Dhaka, Barisal and Chittagong tied on 10 points at the end of the league phase. In the head-to-head results between the teams level on 10 points, Dhaka had beaten Barisal twice and Chittagong once and had a superior net-run rate and qualified for the semi-finals in third place. That now left Chittagong and Barisal in contention for the fourth spot.Chittagong had two wins, against Barisal and Dhaka, while Barisal had only one, against Chittagong. Barisal’s net run-rate, however, was better than that of Chittagong. It was initially announced that Chittagong were in the semi-finals, presumably on the basis of a better head-to-head record in the three-way tie on 10 points, which included Dhaka. At 2.45 am this morning, however, the BPL issued a release which said that Barisal was the fourth semi-finalist, presumably because their head-to-head record with Chittagong – not including Dhaka who had already qualified – was tied and they had a better net run-rate.The upshot of all this confusion was that Rajshahi had ample time to prepare mentally for their knockout clash, while their opponents were left in limbo until the wee hours of the morning. In the spotlightThe hard-hitting Jamaican, Marlon Samuels, will be eager to finish his stint with Rajshahi on a high note as he prepares for his maiden foray into the IPL in April.Barisal will rely heavily on their captain Brad Hodge, who came good in the crucial game against Chittagong with a scintillating 67. He called the tournament fun but will have to take it seriously in the semifinals. Form guide (most recent first)Barisal Burners WLWWL
Duronto Rajshahi WWLWW Head to headBarisal won the first game by 22 runs, while Rajshahi came back with a nine-wicket win in the return leg.Chatter”If we can play well tomorrow and win the semi-final, then I can take stock of how well we played. Our first target was to reach the semi-finals, and our second target now is playing the finals and winning the trophy.”

Nabi rearguard earns Afghanistan draw

ScorecardMohammad Nabi was resolute as Afghanistan drew with UAE•ICC

UAE were on course for their second win in the Intercontinental Cup when they had Afghanistan six down with more than 40 overs to get the remaining wickets at the Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium. But Mohammad Nabi played out 153 balls, and along with Asghar Stanikzai and Samiullah Shenwari took Afghanistan to a draw.It was always going to be a matter of survival for Afghanistan, as they were left chasing 363 in a little less than a day. Given the way Afghanistan’s lower order had collapsed earlier in the game, all odds were on a UAE win when they had the visitors 82 for 6 in 36.1 overs. Nabi had scored a century batting up the order in the first innings, but only came in at No. 7 in the second by which time Afghanistan were 71 for 5. He only got 35 runs but it was the time he spent at the wicket which mattered. For company, Nabi had first Stanikzai who used up 53 balls for his 10, and Shenwari who played a remarkably patient innings of 6 off 78. They ended up reaching 131 for 7 by the end of the day leaving them just behind UAE in the Intercontinental Cup table.UAE had started the day on 213 for 5 with their main dilemma being when to declare. Afghanistan, though, took the option away from them, running through the tail and bowling the hosts out for 228. They could not carry any momentum from that late fightback into their innings, and were reduced to 30 for 3. Javed Ahmadi followed up his 80 in the first innings with 49 in the second but he was only one of the top six to make a contribution. Afghanistan shuffled their batting order, with Mirwais Ashraf and Hamza Kotak moving up the order. Ashraf negotiated 70 balls for his 10, but Afghanistan still needed a rearguard from the lower order.

O'Brien targets New Zealand comeback

Iain O’Brien wants to return to international cricket and could start his comeback by playing for Wellington in the 2011-12 domestic season

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Jun-2011Iain O’Brien, the former New Zealand fast bowler, wants to return to international cricket and could start his comeback by playing for Wellington in the 2011-12 domestic season.”I’m not done yet,” O’Brien told the . “I know what the goal is, it’s not just coming back to play for Wellington, but also I want to do it properly and play for New Zealand.”O’Brien had retired unexpectedly in December 2009 and moved to England to be with his wife, hoping to qualify as a domestic player for Middlesex. His contract with the county had a clause stipulating he would be retained only if he was classified as a local player, but the ECB refused to recognise him as one in November 2010.Amid increasing uncertainty over his county future, O’Brien’s season was also hampered by a hamstring injury. He has since had surgery and contemplated a return to New Zealand from his base in Derbyshire.”It hasn’t quite worked out for him over there and Iain floated the idea of coming back to me,” Robbie Kerr, Wellington’s high-performance manager, said. “I’d be delighted to see him back. He has been a fantastic servant for Wellington cricket and you never get less than 100% from Obber.”He believes he can get some county play in before the end of the season, so it sounds pretty promising. If he is coming back with international cricket on his mind then he must be pretty confident about his level of fitness.”O’Brien, who turns 35 next month, is working on his rehab but admitted it would be difficult to revive a career in which he took 73 wickets in 22 Tests, especially after not playing since July 2010. “That’s the scary bit for me. I finished on a real high; I walked away and people said `why are you going?’ I don’t want to walk back and people to say `you’re not that good’. I want to do everything I can to get back to the level I was at in that Pakistan series.”I’m a better player now, mentally, than I ever was. It’s going to take quite a few overs to find it again but I wouldn’t be doing it if I didn’t think I could succeed.””I really wanted to play at home. It might not all come together but I’m pretty sure I’ll be back at the Basin. I know Grant Elliott (the Wellington captain) wants me running into the wind again. He’s pretty keen to have me back.”

High Court postpones IPL player retention deadline

The Bombay High Court has ruled that the BCCI must extend the deadline for IPL teams to nominate the players they wish to retain for the 2011 tournament from December 6 to December 8. The ruling came after Kings XI Punjab, one of the two franchises that were expelled from the league, accused the board of “deliberately” delaying the arbitration hearings over their expulsion so the original deadline could expire. The decision was confirmed to ESPNcricinfo by Sundar Raman, the IPL’s chief executive. The High Court’s decision is another blow for the BCCI as it seeks to keep the two franchises, the other being Rajasthan Royals, out of the IPL. Both teams were expelled on Oct 10, for what the board asserted were transgressions of shareholding and ownership norms that threatened to “shake the very foundation of the tender process”. The two franchises have since taken the BCCI to court and their cases are now in arbitration. The Punjab hearings were due to begin on Thursday, but the arbitrator, Justice BN Srikrishna, decided to stand down after the BCCI objected to him on the grounds that he represented the Wadia group, which is a part owner of the franchise, in many of their cases in the past. Srikrishna was the board’s original choice for arbitrator.”BCCI kept silent deliberately… They strung us along for one week as the deadline for negotiating with ‘marquee players’ is to expire on December 6,” the PTI news agency quoted Punjab’s lawyer Darius Khambata as saying.Srikrishna is also the arbitrator in the hearings involving Rajasthan. On Tuesday, he issued an interim order staying the team’s expulsion. The stay restored their rights as a franchise for a period of six weeks after he issues his final ruling. These included the right to participate in the upcoming player auction in January. In his interim order, the judge said the BCCI’s argument for expelling the team was “too facile to cut ice”.According to the recently remodelled rules for IPL 4, teams can retain up to four players, only three of whom can be Indians before the new auction. The retained players must have been part of the franchise’s registered squads for the 2010 season, and will not be part of January’s auction, which is meant to begin the countdown to the 2011 season, and a new three-year contract period for the players.

Man City eyeing move for Stefan de Vrij

Manchester City are reportedly interested in a move for Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij, according to reports in Italy.

What’s the word?

As per CMIT TV (via Sports Witness), the reigning Premier League champions are ‘willing to spend’ an ‘important figure’ to prize the Dutchman from the San Siro, with a bid in the region of €40m (£33.5m) potentially on the cards.

The 30-year-old – who joined the Serie A outfit from Lazio in 2018 – has just a year remaining on his existing deal, with the ‘right offer’ potentially set to tempt both him and Simone Inzaghi’s side into a sale this summer.

As the report also alludes to, however, there has been speculation in recent weeks linking the £31.5m-rated man to Tottenham Hotspur in the upcoming transfer window, with the player having previously worked under Spurs boss Antonio Conte in Milan for two seasons – notably winning the Scudetto last term for the first time in 11 years.

Stones in trouble

Despite being currently well-stocked in their centre-back ranks – with Aymeric Laporte, John Stones, Ruben Dias and Nathan Ake all at the club – this latest news suggests that Pep Guardiola’s side appear keen to further bolster their backline, with one of their current stars potentially set to be a notable casualty.

The man that could well give way to any new defensive addition is England international, Stones, with the 27-year-old having lost his place to teammate Laporte as the first-choice partner to last season’s Premier League player of the year’, Dias.

Having been a £40m arrival from Bournemouth just two seasons ago, it would also appear unlikely that the club would cash in on Ake just yet, particularly with the former Chelsea man offering that much-needed balance as a left-footed option.

For Stones, it has proven to be a fairly frustrating campaign thus far, with the £250k-per-week star having made just 11 top-flight starts to date, while he was also recently forced off with an injury in the recent thrilling 4-3 victory over Real Madrid on Tuesday night.

That enthralling clash had seen the former Everton man line up in an unconventional right-back position in the absence of compatriot Kyle Walker – a role he has utilised on five occasions this season – a fact that further emphasises his diminishing status at the heart of the backline.

The £25.2m-rated man has also registered some fairly meagre statistics so far this term, averaging o.4 tackles and 0.8 interceptions in the Premier League, while he also ranks in just the top 97% for blocks made per 90 and the top 77% for clearances made, compared to players in his position across Europe’s top five leagues.

While that partly has something to do with City’s usual dominance in possession and limited need to defend, such a record also points to lingering concerns over his defensive ability, having once been criticised by Alan Shearer for making “mistake after mistake” in his early days at the Etihad.

By contrast, potential new arrival de Vrij has been in stunning form for the Serie A title challengers, with former Lazio defender Mauricio dubbing him a “monster” with “excellent technique” following his eye-catching displays for the Nerazzurri.

The 55-cap international has performed favourably in comparison to the aforementioned City man so far this season, registering 1.2 tackles, 1.8 clearances and one interception per game in the league thus far in his 26 outings.

There would no doubt need to be a period of adjustment as he has frequently lined up at the centre of a back three for Inzaghi’s charges, although his arrival in England could help to strengthen an already stubborn and seemingly impenetrable backline.

Stones – who has been linked with a move to Newcastle United of late – would be wise to be at least a little concerned for his future.

AND in other news, Imagine him & Rice: West Ham could have signed “magic” £45m-rated star for just £5m…

CJ de Villiers drafted into South Africa A squad

Titans fast bowler CJ de Villiers has been drafted into the South Africa A squad in Sri Lanka as a replacement for Cobras seamer Francois Plaatjies.Plaatjies had undergone groin surgery during the off season but was unable to continue bowling in a warm-up game against Sri Lanka Development XI.”It is hard luck on Plaatjies who is an outstanding talent but has been badly hit by injuries recently,” CSA selection convener Andrew Hudson said. “At the same time we have every confidence in de Villiers who did well on the successful Emerging Tour of Australia earlier this month.”South Africa A take on Pakistan A in a tri-series game in Colombo on Tuesday.
