Scott Parker must consider giving Tyrese Francois a chance in his first-team

Scoring goals has been a problem for Fulham so far this season, with the Cottagers having managed just seven goals in their opening eight Premier League fixtures.

This suggests that Scott Parker’s side are really lacking some creativity in midfield, as well as someone who can take the strain off Aleksandar Mitrovic, with the Serbian having contributed two of those seven goals in the top-flight.

Fortunately for the West London club, they have an academy talent in Tyrese Francois, whose performances for the U23s in recent seasons suggest that he is more than ready to make his mark in the Fulham first-team.

The 20-year-old midfielder has grabbed two goals and one assist in just two appearances for the U23 side so far this season and is clearly pushing for a promotion to the first-team, having made his second appearance for the club – a 19-minute cameo after a 10-minute one in the same competition last term – earlier this season in the 2-0 win against Sheffield Wednesday in the Carabao Cup.

Francois’ debut came in a 1-0 defeat against Southampton in the same competition early last season, suggesting that he has been pushing for a first-team spot for some time now, and Parker must be well aware of his talent.

Following the win against Sheffield Wednesday, the Fulham manager was full of praise for Francois and fellow youngster Fabio Carvalho, saying:

“I thought they were brilliant. They did really well, to be fair.

“They’ve trained really well with us over the last few weeks. I thought they were positive when they came on and they created a few chances as well, so I was really pleased for those boys.

“Tyrese and Fabio, two very good football players who I’m sure will have a bright future here.” (per FTBL)

Therefore, Francois is clearly knocking on the door for Parker’s side and considering their lack of creativity this season, it might be worth giving him a chance in the first-team.

His Fulham profile suggests that he is “not the most physical, however, [he] makes up for it with excellent technical ability and skill. He has a lot of pace on and off the ball and is very alert in and out of possession” which sounds exactly like the sort of player the Cottagers might need right now.

Exclusive: Carlton Palmer says West Bromwich Albion starlet Grady Diangana is a "fantastic talent"

Carlton Palmer has hailed West Bromwich Albion winger Grady Diangana as a “fantastic talent” who is “one for the future” in an exclusive with Football FanCast.Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast correspondent Tom Ward, the former England international is backing Diangana to cope with the pressures and demands of life at the Hawthorns.Diangana burst onto the scene at West Brom as the Baggies battled their way to Premier League promotion last term, before he left his boyhood club West Ham for the final time for a fee that has risen to £18m in the summer.Last season, the 22-year-old scored eight goals and supplied six assists in 30 games in the Championship, whilst he averaged 1.6 shots, 1.4 key passes and 2.4 dribbles per game, via WhoScored. After struggling to break into West Ham’s first team with Andriy Yarmolenko, Robert Snodgrass, Jarrod Bowen, Manuel Lanzini and Pablo Fornals for competition, he moved to the West Midlands in the end instead, which didn’t go down well with his former teammates, with Mark Noble tweeting:

He is highly-rated by Baggies chiefs – and Hal Robson-Kanu has insisted the excitement is shared by the rest of the squad.

However, Palmer believes Diangana needs to be protected from overzealous Baggies fans, as he told FFC:

“He is a fantastic talent, I think it’s a great acquisition for West Brom.

“You can’t put huge pressure on a 22-year-old who has never played in the Premier League.”

“But he’s definitely one for the future, he’s a talented, talented boy.”

Diangana has given fans a glimpse of things to come as he scored his first goal in the top flight in the 5-2 defeat at home to Everton in September.

Since he first arrived at the Hawthorns, the 1-cap England U21 international has scored nine goals and supplied seven assists in 40 games in all competitions for the Baggies, which is a pretty impressive return by any player’s standards, especially when you consider the fact that at one stage he seemed destined to become a fringe player at West Ham.

However, he seems to have run out of steam in recent weeks, with only one goal in his last nine outings so far this season.

But, given his young age, the youngster cannot be expected to shoulder the burden of responsibility alone.

Whilst there is obviously still room for improvement, age is on his side.

Leeds cashed in on Ross McCormack at the perfect time

Earlier this week we spoke about one of Leeds’ worst sales in history in the shape of Kasper Schmeichel, but now it’s time to look at one of the smartest sales the club ever made.

Back in 2014, Ross McCormack was the hottest property outside of the Premier League, he’d just won the Championship Golden Boot and was scoring all types of goals including long-range screamers and picture-perfect free-kicks.

All in all, McCormack scored 58 times for Leeds, and that made him a highly-coveted player at that level.

Unfortunately, Leeds weren’t the force they are today, and the Scot was ripe for the picking for any club with bigger ambitions, and eventually, newly-relegated Fulham signed him for £11m as they tried to navigate their way out of the Championship at the first time of asking.

Unfortunately, it didn’t quite go that way for Fulham or McCormack. The Scot was the London club’s top scorer, netting 17 in the league, but the team was too reliant on him, finishing 17th at the end of the season.

It was more of the same next season, McCormack bagged 21 times as Fulham finished 20th, and his good goal return earned him another big-money move, joining Aston Villa for £12m.

Meanwhile, Leeds were busy unearthing a striker better than McCormack with Chris Wood winning a Championship Golden Boot of his own before getting a Premier League move.

McCormack’s move to Aston Villa signalled the start of a huge decline. He would only score three goals for the Villans before being slammed for his fitness and becoming a forgotten man at Villa Park.

What followed was a litany of unprofessional behaviour, he missed training because his gate at his house wouldn’t open and was pictured looking out of shape asleep on a sofa in Magaluf just weeks after his Villa contract was terminated.

Nowadays he turns out for National League outfit Aldershot Town, and while transfermarkt value him at £1.08m, it’s hard to imagine that any club will pay a fee for him ever again.

Leeds got out at the perfect time, they cashed in and unearthed a better striker just a couple of years before his career went off the rails.

McCormack is undoubtedly one of the most talented players to have turned out at Elland Road in the 2010s, but Leeds can be happy with the fact that they didn’t hold onto him for any longer than they needed to.

Wolves fans rip into Ruben Vinagre after West Ham showing

It was a disappointing day at the office to say the least for Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday.

The Midlands outfit struggled to get into their stride as they were humiliated by West Ham United at the London Stadium.

A couple of goals from Jarrod Bowen and a pair of headers from Tomas Soucek and Sebastien Haller were enough to settle things on Sunday evening, and for some supporters, there was no doubting who was at fault.

Indeed, Ruben Vinagre was something of a scapegoat for supporters during and after the game as the fanbase pelted him for his performance.

Supporters didn’t hold back when discussing the Portuguese youngster on Twitter.

Others were a little more constructive with their criticism, stating that while Vinagre’s performance was disappointing, he may need to refine his game elsewhere if he is to become a star at Molineux.

There were plenty of supporters calling for the left-footer to be sent out on loan.

Inevitably, others didn’t have such a kind view of things, with a more reactionary section of the fanbase calling for him to immediately be sold, while others posted comments such as ‘leave my club’.

Others were a bit more tactical in their analysis of why Vinagre had such a poor showing, with one consensus being that it’s due to the fact that Romain Saiss was playing at left-centre-back, and the pair’s combined defensive frailties were seemingly a recipe for disaster.

Tottenham Hotspur: Erik Lamela may leave Spurs in the summer

Tottenham ace Erik Lamela could be on his way out the door before the start of next season.

According to Football Insider, Lamela’s long-term future at Spurs remains uncertain ahead of the Premier League’s return in June. Football writer Wayne Veysey reports that the Argentine only has nine games to convince Jose Mourinho he deserves to stay in north London.

Mourinho faces an exodus of players in the summer, as Jan Vertonghen and Juan Foyth are seemingly set to leave. A source told Football Insider that the Lilywhites are likely to listen to offers for Lamela between now and the end of the season.

It is fair to say that the Argentina international is still a divisive figure among many Tottenham supporters, despite the fact he moved to White Hart Lane more than six years ago. Unfortunately, he has been plagued by injuries throughout his career so far, including a hamstring injury last year which saw him spend 63 days on the sidelines.

Nevertheless, Lamela was a favourite of former boss Mauricio Pochettino, as he became the club’s first-choice right winger during his tenure, scoring 31 goals and creating 40 assists in 183 appearances before his compatriot was promptly sacked after a poor run of form back in November.

The 28-year-old has struggled for consistency this season, as he has only scored two goals and provided just one assist in 17 games in the Premier League, taking 1.4 shots per game, averaging one key pass and attempting at least one dribble on average (via WhoScored).

Earlier this year, Football Insider revealed that Spurs are willing to let him leave, and it seems that the situation remains unchanged.

While Lamela could be given one last chance to prove himself to Mourinho, Football Insider claims that he could quit north London if the right offer arrives. Although footage has recently emerged of his sensational strike in a training match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Friday, this is merely papering over the cracks.

His output this season has simply not been good enough, especially as the Spurs head coach has made it clear he wants to win trophies in the future.

Mourinho is well aware that he will be strapped for cash in the transfer market and the club could sell the £14.4m-valued midfielder to raise funds for a squad overhaul.

Tottenham fans, should Daniel Levy sell Erik Lamela in the summer? Let us know in the comments below!

Celtic: Fans discuss Cristiano Ronaldo playing at Celtic Park

Celtic recently tweeted out an article talking about Cristiano Ronaldo and revisiting the time he played against the Hoops at Celtic Park.

The Portuguese star played against the Hoops for Manchester United in the Champions League group stages on Tuesday, November 21, 2006, via Celtic FC.

It was an entertaining game, and the Scottish side came away with a 1-0 victory thanks to a wonderful Shunsuke Nakamura free kick, whilst goalkeeper Artur Boruc also saved a penalty in the dying minutes.

Ronaldo is one of the best players in world football, and it is proven by both his trophy cabinet and his goalscoring record. The attacker has made 836 appearances for Juventus, Manchester United, Sporting Lisbon and Real Madrid, picking up 219 assists whilst scoring 626 goals, per Transfermarkt.

He has won 32 trophies for both club and country, including the Premier League, La Liga, the Champions League and the European Championship, whilst winning the Ballon d’or five times.

However for a man who has made history on numerous occasions, he had to stand by and watch as Celtic made it a memorable European night at Paradise. The game meant the Celts qualified for the knockout stages of the competition for the first time in the club’s history, via Celtic FC.

Spurs star Alli needs to be given pivotal role against Man United

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Manchester United host Tottenham Hotspur this week in one of the standout fixtures in the Premier League tonight.

On the chalkboard

Jose Mourinho will take his Spurs team to Old Trafford looking to get one over on his former employers, with whom he won the Europa League and the League Cup.

It is also a game that Spurs need to win. They are currently fifth in the table and manager Mourinho has emphasised the importance of keeping pace with Chelsea, who are fourth.

It is instructive, then, to take a look at United’s weaknesses and see where Spurs could get some joy at Old Trafford.

At a base level, United have been struggling this season. They have won just four games and have lost four while drawing six, including a 3-3 stalemate with Sheffield United and a 2-2 draw with Norwich City. They have scored 21 goals and conceded 17, though the latter number is actually lower than Spurs, who have let in 21 but scored 24.

Their struggles, per WhoScored, have mainly come through the middle. Indeed, 67% of the shots United face have come from the centre of the pitch, with 20% from the left and 13% from the right.

In terms of shot zones, only 8% have come from inside the six-yard box but 49% have come from inside the area, suggesting that there is a way to breach this defence and work a close-range shooting opportunity. Amazingly, that number actually increases to 54% when only home games – such as Wednesday’s fixture – are taken into account.

United are also pretty switched on when it comes to defending counter-attacks, conceding just once on the break, but they have let in five goals from set-pieces and 11 from open play; Spurs will likely have to break them down to score instead of relying on dead ball situations.

Alli is key

Dele Alli could be key to the way Spurs set up against United.

He has been in excellent form since the appointment of Mourinho and has scored three goals in his last three games in all competitions.

He is likely to be deployed in the No.10 role again and given the licence to move in behind Harry Kane while linking up with him.

Watch Man United v Tottenham Live and Free with Amazon Prime

Knowing that United struggle to stop shots from the centre of the pitch, Spurs have to move the ball to Alli as quickly as possible, however that may come about.

Indeed, his goals against Bournemouth both came from raking balls forward from Toby Alderweireld, while he is also capable of finding a pocket of space and cracking off a shot in a tight area.

The stats suggest that he could be the decisive element on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Spurs fans have been left buzzing by some official contract news.
