Committee to oversee IPL affairs likely

The BCCI is likely to propose a special committee, to be led by interim president Jagmohan Dalmiya, to review the daily affairs of the IPL

Nagraj Gollapudi27-Jul-2013With no one currently heading the IPL, an influential section of the BCCI is likely to propose a special committee, to be led by interim president Jagmohan Dalmiya, to look into and review the daily affairs of the league. After Rajiv Shukla resigned as chairman of the IPL, no replacement was appointed as the BCCI was busy sorting out the mess created by the alleged corruption scandals. The proposal is likely to come up for discussion at the BCCI working committee meeting to be held in Kolkata on Sunday.Although the IPL governing council, a BCCI sub-committee, still remains the body to look after the league, some board members feel there is room to accommodate a separate committee that could review the IPL. It is understood that Dalmiya has consulted Arun Jaitley, one of the the BCCI vice-presidents, on the matter and has got the nod. It is also learned that Dalmiya has spoken to a few former Indian cricketers, seeking their opinion about how best to run the IPL.Immediately after he took over as the interim BCCI president, Dalmiya had initiated “operation clean up” for the IPL, wherein he announced proposals to enforce a “stricter code of conduct” for players and match officials, as well as putting an end to the “sleaze” element in the form of entertainment and after-hours parties.Dalmiya took charge on June 2 after N Srinivasan “temporarily” stepped aside pending inquiry into allegations of corruption and spot-fixing during the sixth season of the IPL. Dalmiya recently attended the ICC annual conference as the Indian representative, even though Srinivasan participated in influential meetings such finance and commercial affairs via video conference. It is understood that Srinivasan will not attend Sunday’s meeting, which is also likely to discuss the tour itineraries for India’s tour of South Africa, and their scheduled visit to New Zealand early next year.It is also learned that the working committee will not discuss the findings of the two probe panels investigating the corruption scandals of IPL 2013. Ravi Sawani, the BCCI’s anti-corruption head, has not yet concluded his probe into the alleged spot-fixing by three Rajasthan Royals players. Although Sawani has finished speaking to Sreesanth and Ankeet Chavan, he has yet to meet Ajit Chandila, who is still in judicial custody. The inquiry commission appointed by the BCCI, made up of two retired judges, has not yet finished its work. The commission was appointed to investigate charges against Gurunath Meiyappan and Raj Kundra, respectively part of Chennai Super Kings and Royals, who according to Mumbai and Delhi Police, had admitted to betting during IPL matches.

We're not here to make up the numbers – Gibson

On the eve of their match against India at The Oval, West Indies coach Ottis Gibson hoped his side will be known for more than just their flair

On that famous Colombo night, after Marlon Samuels had launched a staggering counterattack with the bat, he came to the bowling crease and made his presence felt there too. When Samuels took a wicket in his final over, he stood mid-pitch, face lit up in jubilation, and began to shudder while dusting himself off. Incoming team-mates committed to the caper. Each one picked a spot on Samuels’ body and brushed him down ecstatically. It is a moment few who were in the ground will ever forget, and an emphatic expression of uniquely Caribbean cricketing fun. On the eve of their second Champions Trophy group match, against India at The Oval though, West Indies coach Ottis Gibson hoped his side will be known for more than just their colour.”That’s the one thing you will get when you come to the stadium to watch West Indies play, you will be entertained,” Gibson said. “There was a time not long ago where we entertained you and ended up on the wrong side of the result, and we’re hoping to change that. We saw against Pakistan a very close, entertaining match – low scoring but very entertaining – and we actually got the right result. We’re looking to do the same again.”Samuels and company had helped deliver West Indies’ first major world title since 1979 (although they won the Champions Trophy in 2004). In the intervening years – particularly since the mid-1990s – West Indies had slid drastically from their perch atop the cricket world, and Gibson hoped the triumph in Colombo would become the beginning of West Indies’ road to regaining credibility.”When you look at the style of play that we have as a nation, Twenty20 lends itself to the way we play, the way we like to play. Having said that, Twenty20 to me is always about entertainment. The 50‑over format and, more importantly for me, the Test format, is where the real skills of cricket need to be applied.”In the past, we’ve had this group of players together, and we’ve gone to major tournaments with high expectations, and we didn’t do as well as we could have done or should have done. Winning the tournament in Sri Lanka gave us huge belief that yes, we can win. We know we have the superstars, we know we have the players, the talent, but we never really got the job done. Sri Lanka gave us a huge belief that we can, and you’ll see a sort of renewed attitude within the team, that when we come to major tournaments we’re not just here to make the numbers up anymore.”The rankings say that we are now eighth in the world. We know that on our day we’re capable of beating the No. 1 team. We’re capable of beating any team in a format like this where it’s so short and every game matters.”Having won one match and secured – if fortuitously- top spot with a strong net run rate, they are not far from earning a semi-finals berth. India have been one of the form sides in England so far, however, and shape as West Indies’ biggest hurdle in the group. West Indies players have been among the most abundant overseas stars in the IPL, and Gibson hoped that experience would sharpen his side’s strategy on Tuesday.”Dwayne Bravo, Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard and especially Sunil Narine have been starring in the IPL, so hopefully they’ve got a lot of information to share when we get back this evening. We’ll have a really good discussion about the Indian players and stuff like that, and those guys will form part of the main part of that discussion.”Gibson said their strategy is unlikely to prey on India batsmen’s perceived weakness against the short ball and would instead seek to maximise West Indies’ strengths. India exited the World Twenty20 in England in 2009, after several batsmen had their techniques exposed, and the same deficiency also contributed to their downfall in England in 2011, when they lost the Test series 4-0 and the ODI series 3-0.”The last time we used short-pitched bowling, it was Joel Garner, Colin Croft, Michael Holding and people like that,” Gibson said. “We don’t have those tall guys anymore, so as we saw against Pakistan, we pitched it up, we swung it a little bit and we put it in the right areas. I suppose that will be the strategy going forward.”

Wheater forces move to Hampshire

Adam Wheater, the highly-rated wicketkeeper batsman, has bought himself out of the final year of his contract with Essex and will move to Hampshire with immediate effect on a two-year deal.Wheater, 23, has been looking for other opportunities for some time. ESPNcricinfo revealed in September that he was in talks with Hampshire, among other clubs, but Essex were refusing to let him leave before the end of the 2013 season. He was expected to start the season in Essex’s side as a batsman but had become the county’s third choice wicketkeeper behind long-standing James Foster and England Lions’ keeper Ben Foakes.Wheater feels he will have a much greater opportunity to take the gloves at Hampshire and is expected to displace Michael Bates. If that is the case, Bates, 22, may consider himself unfortunate. While the 22-year-old is a batsman of modest ability – first-class average of 19.66 – he is an exceptional wicketkeeper. He played a pivotal part in Hampshire’s CB40 success last season, taking the final ball stood up to the stumps against the pace of Kabir Ali. He has taken 102 catches in 33 first-class games. But Hampshire manager Giles White insisted Wheater would have to earn his place: “No assurances or promises have been made to Adam but we are delighted that he has chosen to pursue his career at Hampshire.”He will add competition with the gloves and comes with an impressive first-class batting average. We have experienced, first-hand, that he is a young player with great ability and we hope that he is able to fulfil his potential and build on what has been a bright start to his career.”Wheater, who attended Millfield School in Somerset, scored 462 first-class runs from the middle order at 35.35 in 2012.”Over the winter months, Adam made it very clear that he would like to progress his wicketkeeping,” Essex head coach, Paul Grayson, said. “It is always sad to lose a player you have nurtured from a young age but we understand that to progress his career in his preferred role in the team he will need to change club.”

Suryakumar, Sai Sudharsan, Gill take top three spots on IPL 2025 Orange Cap table

On the Purple Cap leaderboard, Gujarat Titans’ Prasidh Krishna has become the first to get to the 20-wicket mark in IPL 2025

ESPNcricinfo staff07-May-20252:06

How crucial was Gill’s 43 from 46 balls?

Orange Cap table

Virat Kohli, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batting frontman, led the Orange Cap table after Monday, and his closest competitors, GT’s B Sai Sudharsan and MI’s Suryakumar Yadav, were both in action on Tuesday. Changes were expected, and change there was.Suryakumar went first after GT opted to bowl, and his 35 in 24 balls took his tally for the season to 510. Ahead of Kohli’s 505 and to No. 1. Sai Sudharsan needed two runs to cross Kohli and seven to get past Suryakumar and to the top. As it turned out, he had his second failure of the season, his 5 taking him past Kohli, but keeping him in second place, one run behind the table-topper.But Kohli isn’t even No. 3 right now. That spot belongs to Sai Sudharsan’s captain Shubman Gill, who continued his steady rise on the ladder, his 43 off 46 balls lifting him to the third spot with 508 runs.Kohli is at fourth, with another GT batter, Jos Buttler, completing the top five and also the club of 500-run men in the tournament. Buttler scored 30 in 27 balls against MI to get to 500 runs.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Purple Cap table

There’s more joy for GT on the wicket-takers’ table, with Prasidh Krishna becoming the first man to pick up 20 wickets this IPL. Prasidh, the leader on the table coming into the game, took 1 for 37 and got to 20 wickets, with RCB’s Josh Hazlewood in second spot with 18, the same as MI’s Trent Boult, who took 2 for 22 in GT’s chase.Below them are two bowlers with 16 wickets – Arshdeep Singh of Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Noor Ahmad of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) – followed by two bowlers on 15 and six bowlers on 14 wickets, who are really just one good spell away from closing in on the top spots. The ESPNcricinfo MVP table will give you a good idea of who the most consistent and impactful performers in IPL 2025 have been. And here are some other IPL 2025 tables.

  • Highest batting strike rates
  • Best bowling economy rates
  • Most sixes
  • Best bowling figures in a match

Confiamos no trabalho dele.

L!: Além disto, Ceni trouxe mudanças estruturais do Fortaleza.

Gloucestershire eye victory after Payne haul

David Payne completed career-best first-class figures of 6 for 26 asGloucestershire strengthened their grip on the County Championship matchwith Leicestershire at Bristol

09-Sep-2011
ScorecardDavid Payne completed career-best first-class figures of 6 for 26 asGloucestershire strengthened their grip on the County Championship matchwith Leicestershire at Bristol. The visitors resumed the third day on 131 for 6 in the first innings, butcould add only four runs as Payne claimed three of the wickets. Will Gidmanfinished with two for 24. Following on 259 behind, Leicestershire were then looking slightly rattled on 122 for three before a century stand between James Taylor (70) and Ned Eckersley(52 not out) steadied things. They closed on 255 for 4, still four runs adrift and with Will Jeffersonhaving retired hurt because of an injured hand. Leicestershire could manage only one scoring stroke, a boundary by Eckersley, in losing their last four wickets at the start of the day.Three of the tail registered ducks, including overnight batsman Rob Taylor, whohad his off-stump uprooted by Payne. Eckersley had moved to 39 when he became the eighth man out, caught behind off Ian Saxelby, and Payne quickly wrapped up the innings by finding the edge of Jigar Naik’s bat before clean bowling Matthew Hoggard second ball. The last four wickets fell without addition to the total and Payne bettered hisprevious best first-class figures of 5 for 76 in the opening game of thisseason against Derbyshire at Bristol. When Leicestershire followed on they soon suffered another blow as Jeffersonwas forced to retire on two, having been struck on his hand. He was taken tohospital for X-rays, which showed no broken bones. Greg Smith (40) and Matt Boyce (44) took the score to 100 before falling in quick succession. Smith was caught at gully trying to force a ball from Payne off the back-foot, and at the start of the following over Boyce called for aquick single as James Taylor played a ball to backward point and was run out byGidman’s direct hit. When Josh Cobb gave another gully catch to Kane Williamson off bat and pad tomake it 122 for three, another Leicestershire collapse looked likely. But the diminutive Taylor is big on talent and together with Eckersley began to make a fight of it.It was 145 for three at tea and the England Lions player went on to reach ahalf-century off 88 balls, with six fours, looking particularly strong off hislegs. It took the wily Jon Lewis to dismiss him with a short ball, which Taylortop-edged to fine-leg where Payne took a safe catch.Eckersley stood firm and moved to fifty off 116 balls, with four fours. The22-year-old wicketkeeper was unbeaten at the close alongside Wayne White(12no).

Yuvraj sets up Pakistan showdown

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsRick Ponting’s terrific century went in vain as Australia could not defend 260•Associated Press

An awe-inspiring Ricky Ponting dazzled and Sachin Tendulkar hit a delightful fifty but it was the imperious Yuvraj Singh who stole the show to lead India to an exciting semi-final encounter against Pakistan. On a dry pitch, aiding turn, India couldn’t remove a wonderfully solid Ponting, but found a way around him to hold Australia to a competitive 260. Tendulkar set the base and the middle order threatened to choke, but Yuvraj played a blinder to charge India to a famous win.Sometimes, they say, one four can change things around. That cliché came alive today, in the final ball of the 39th over, with India needing 72 from 67 deliveries, when Yuvraj spanked Shaun Tait for a stunning four over backward point. It oozed of skill, impishness and dare under fire. Until then, in the preceding few overs, India choked and spluttered badly to almost hand the game to Australia. That Yuvraj hit over point sensationally turned the game on its head. The next over proved to be the game-breaker as Brett Lee was looted for 14 runs: Suresh Raina played the most assured pull of his life to crash the first delivery to the boundary and Yuvraj carved the final delivery over point, but it was a shot in between that really reflected the enthralling contest. It was a screaming yorker from Lee, from around the stumps, and Yuvraj crouched, opened the bat-face and stabbed it through to the third man boundary. Lee looked stunned, and you felt that was the moment when India affected the jail break.Until Yuvraj took ownership of the chase, the pressure-cooker situation had got to India and they were beginning to choke. In five mad overs between the 32nd and 37th, just after Virat Kohli had swiped a full toss from David Hussey straight to midwicket in the 29th over, it was absolute pandemonium as India looked hell bent on self-destruction. Gautam Gambhir tried to run himself out three times and was successful on the final attempt. In the 33rd over, he ran for a non-existent run after Yuvraj had played the ball towards midwicket but Ponting missed the sticks. In the next over, he got into a yes-and-no situation with Yuvraj and would have been run out had Brad Haddin, who dashed to the short mid-on region, thrown it at the non-striker’s end. Gambhir was run out next ball, again running mindlessly after Yuvraj stabbed David Hussey wide of the first slip.India required 93 runs from 101 balls at that stage, but they slipped further into the abyss as MS Dhoni got out after looking edgy. He nearly got involved in a run out, had a big swing and a miss against Lee and perished next delivery, cutting to point to leave India needing 74 from 75 balls. It was then that Yuvraj decided to play the World Cup innings of his life. The batting Powerplay was the final hurdle, but Raina, who gave admirable support to Yuvraj after Dhoni’s exit, walloped the first ball from Lee over long-on and Australia’s fight evaporated with that shot. Before Yuvraj, India’s chase revolved almost entirely around Sachin Tendulkar. It was a slow pitch, but Tendulkar played some shots that defied the nature of the track. Tait v Tendulkar in particular lived up to the billing. Tendulkar punched the first delivery he faced, and the first from Tait, through cover point and, upper cut the next legal delivery to the third man boundary. Tait sledged, Tendulkar stared, and the chase was soaked with intensity from then on. Tait was soon out off the attack but returned to silence the crowd. He gave away six runs in his first over on return, which included two wides and also saw Tendulkar getting to his fifty. He struck with the first delivery of his next over, the 19th of the innings, with a delivery released from a slightly round-armish action that held its line outside off stump. Tendulkar tried to steer it to point but edged it to Brad Haddin.Spare a thought for the Australian captain, probably playing his last World Cup match and to Australia, who were last eliminated before the finals of a World Cup way back in 1992. Whenever Zaheer Khan threatened to push India in front, Ponting shoved Australia ahead. The knock was a microcosm of Ponting the man. It had skill, grit, bloody-mindedness, and dare; it Ponting. It will probably be the only knock from him that won’t be remembered for many scintillating shots and it will be cherished for how responsibly he curbed his natural strokeplay. There was tremendous poise in how he dealt with the slow nature of the pitch and a great amount of skill in the way he handled spin. Ponting showed sheer grit in the way he held the Australian innings together, and admirable character to do it when he wasn’t in great form, on such a big stage. When he was fresh, he had to face Harbhajan Singh, his nemesis, bowling from around the stumps.Ponting countered him by shuffling to his right and working the ball with the turn. When he was tired, he had to face the reverse-swing from Zaheer. In the middle, he picked Ashwin’s ball, and mixed caution and aggression against Yuvraj Singh.Australia’s slide and India’s resurgence in the middle overs began with an awful shot from Michael Clarke, who top-edged a slog-sweep against Yuvraj to long-on in the 31st over. Zaheer dismissed Michael Hussey with knuckled slower one to leave Australia wobbling at 140 for 4 in the 34th over. Ponting and David Hussey took the batting Powerplay in the 44th over and added 44 vital runs without losing a wicket. Ponting must have thought he had done all he could to ensure Australia remained in the competition but he was outdone by Yuvraj.

Hampshire secure Afridi for second time

Hampshire will try for a second time to have Shahid Afridi as an overseas player for the Friends Provident t20 after the deal fell through last season due to him captaining Pakistan.Afridi is expected to be available for the full t20 campaign which begins on June 1 when Hampshire, the defending champions, take on Somerset. He was due to be part of the 2010 tournament but captained against Australia before resigning following the first Test at Lord’s.”I was disappointed not to join Hampshire last season. It would have been fantastic to have been a part of the team that made history by winning the t20 trophy on home soil,” Afridi said. “Having played at The Rose Bowl for Pakistan last year I know that it is fast becoming one of the best places in the country to watch cricket of all levels. I hope very much to play a big part in the club’s success in 2011.”Afridi has a Twenty20 strike-rate of 159.84 and his bowling is also a highly valuable asset in the shortest format bringing him 98 wickets at 19.03 alongside an economy rate of 6.35″Shahid is a wonderful all-round cricketer and will be a real asset to our club over what should be an incredibly exciting summer at The Rose Bowl,” Giles White, the Hampshire manager, said. “This year we’ll see Test match cricket come to the county for the first time, more improvements made to our ground and, of course, Hampshire will be hoping to defend our t20 crown.”
