Shafiq, Misbah give Pakistan control

Pakistan retained the advantage in the Hamilton Test with their batsmen edging out a testing battle against the New Zealand bowlers on a placid surface more deserving of a one-sided contest. Middle-order batsmen Asad Shafiq and Misbah-ul-Haq batted patiently to rebuild Pakistan’s reply to 275, which had lost track in the session before tea against a determined spell from the seamers. The pair provided stability to the innings and set the platform for a lead with an unbeaten 128-run stand that has eased the burden on the inexperienced line-up to follow. The bowling was unthreatening, the conditions even more so with the virtual absence of swing and movement. Such a situation lent itself to a waiting game, one that New Zealand appeared to have an upper hand in after Taufeeq Umar and Younis Khan brought about their own downfall post lunch. Misbah and Shafiq played their own waiting game, assured that the pitch would have little role to play in their dismissals and aware that a bad ball wasn’t too far away with New Zealand rotating their bowlers. Both were opportunistic, Shafiq more so than Misbah, helping offset any extended period of quiet with the occasional boundary and taking their team closer to the first-innings target.Shafiq found the boundaries with ease on a quick outfield, clipping and driving the seamers through midwicket and fine leg and using his feet well against spin. He charged out to Daniel Vettori to loft him over mid-on, rocked on the back foot to punch Kane Williamson through the covers and stepped out to part-timer Martin Guptill to smote him over midwicket. Too often did the seamers bowl on his pads – his fifty was brought up with a tickle to fine leg – but he also scored through off, driving through point and cover.Misbah’s intention was to occupy the crease and he did that well with his solidity in defence and not feeling compelled to force the pace with a fluent partner at the other end. He’s been Pakistan’s in-form batsman in Tests with three half-centuries in four innings against South Africa, and a century in the warm-up match prior to this. His first major expansive shot, quite inexplicably, came towards the end of the day; a slog-sweep for six off Williamson. He then went a notch higher, reverse-sweeping the same bowler successive boundaries to reach his half-century just two overs before stumps. For the bulk, Misbah ceded floor to Shafiq and secured one end for Pakistan. The pair built on the efforts of the Pakistan seamers, who brought about an early conclusion to New Zealand’s innings on the second morning, and Taufeeq. Tim Southee and Williamson had set up frustrated Pakistan with a fighting stand to save New Zealand the embarrassment of being bowled out for under 200 on a track full of runs. But their resistance ended this morning when Pakistan’s seamers made up for the lack of purchase from the pitch by ruffling the batsmen up with short deliveries. When the time came to defend 275, New Zealand’s bowlers were guilty of doling out freebies on the pads, Chris Martin particularly, and Taufeeq duly dispatched them. Martin was struck for three boundaries in an over, through midwicket, square leg and mid-on, while Brent Arnel paid for dropping too short, slashed and pulled to the ropes.Post lunch, however, New Zealand bowled better. Lengths were rethought and both Martin and Arnel targeted the good-length area, and angled the ball in by bowling round the wicket to the left-hander. Taufeeq, who had dealt in boundaries, became more restrained and didn’t help himself when he struggled to middle the ball when opportunities came his way. He lost a solid partner in Azhar Ali not too long after lunch, and that gave New Zealand an opening.Taufeeq fought through his frustration by reaching his first half-century since 2003 by guiding Arnel to the third-man boundary, while at the other end Younis injected some urgency to the innings. Like Taufeeq had done before lunch, Younis went after Martin, opening the face to square-drive him thrice for fours and flicking him to the fine-leg boundary. But just when it seemed Pakistan were emerging out of a difficult phase, they put themselves back into one. Taufeeq played a loose flick straight to midwicket, and Younis closed the face too early to spoon a catch back to the bowler. It was Arnel who dismissed the pair, leaving it to the captain Misbah and Shafiq to rebuild.

Haaland out for Dortmund vs Rangers

Andrew Dickson has now given his reaction to the news that Erling Haaland has not travelled with Borussia Dortmund for their game at Glasgow Rangers.

The Lowdown: Still missing

Haaland has been missing for Dortmund for just over a month now with muscular problems, and so missed the first leg of their match against the Ibrox faithful, to which the latter won 4-2 (Transfermarkt).

It is clear how key he is to the Bundesliga team, having averaged more than a goal a game in all competitions so far this season, and with a two-goal deficit, Dortmund could have done with his firepower in the second leg on Thursday night.

The Latest: Dickson reacts

Taking to Twitter, journalist Dickson has since reacted to the fact that Haaland is not with the Dortmund squad once more as they prepare to face the Teddy Bears:

“Good news for Rangers fans, Erling Haaland has not travelled to Glasgow with Borussia Dortmund for tomorrow’s Europa League tie at Ibrox…”

The Verdict: Another boost

After Leon Balogun revealed in the pre-game press conference earlier this afternoon that he is back fit and available for the match, having him back and not having to face Haaland will come as a welcome boost.

The Norway international’s numbers speak for themselves, and the fact that Dortmund only managed a mere three shots on target from 13 in the reverse fixture implies that they are not as clinical without him.

Nonetheless, Giovanni van Bronckhorst should now be more confident than ever that his side can get through the second leg and make further progress in the UEFA Europa League.

Rangers can save millions with Ciubotaru

Rangers boss Gio van Bronckhorst could be on his way to having a very busy summer at Ibrox if he fails to win the title.

Failure to secure the league title would suggest that the squad is not in the right place to dominate Scottish football, and this could lead to off-season surgery being performed by the Dutch head coach and Ross Wilson.

We published an article explaining why Borna Barisic is one player who should be sold in the summer. The Croatia international has attracted interest from the Premier League and is said to be worth £5m, which suggests that Wilson may be able to rake in a respectable amount of money for him at the end of the season.

This would add £5m to the club coffers and save £18k-per-week in wages, but it would leave Van Bronckhorst without any left-back competition for Calvin Bassey.

However, instead of forcing Wilson to enter the transfer market to sign a defender to bolster the squad, the Dutchman can save millions by unleashing one of the players in the academy – Kevin Ciubotaru.

The 18-year-old Romanian joined the club earlier this year and has already played for his country at multiple youth levels.

Speaking about himself, Ciubotaru said: “I think my qualities are speed, dribbling and stamina. I style myself like Theo Hernandez from Milan, although I have a lot of work to do with my right foot. I still have a lot to learn of course.”

This is some comparison from the youngster, as Hernandez has been in phenomenal form in Serie A this season for the Rossoneri. He has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.22 and produced 10 goal contributions in 25 appearances, which shows that he has been consistently delivering top-class performances.

If Ciubotaru can get even close to that level, he will be a fantastic player for Rangers in the future, whilst he will also be exciting to watch for the supporters as he attempts to burst forward in attack to create goals.

The full-back previously described himself as a “robot” in the way he focuses solely on football to improve himself as a player. This suggests that he has the mentality required to make it at the top level, as he is not allowing himself to be distracted by anything else and is driven to achieve his goals.

Therefore, Van Bronckhorst must offer him a chance to show that he can make the step up to the senior team. If the 18-year-old can make that leap, he will save Wilson millions in the transfer market with any money they can make from the sale of Barisic.

Michael Yardy helps Sussex start with victory

Sussex made a successful start to their defence of the Twenty20 Cup with a convincing 52-run win over Somerset in front of a near full-house 7,000 crowd at Hove

Sussex made a successful start to their defence of the Twenty20 Cup with a convincing 52-run win over Somerset in front of a near full-house 7,000 crowd at Hove. Somerset, pre-season favourites to win the tournament, appeared to be in control when they restricted Sussex to 155 for 7, but the home side bowled and fielded superbly to dismiss Somerset for 103 in 17.1 overs.Craig Kieswetter and Marcus Trescothick gave them a decent platform with a stand of 39 but after Trescothick failed to pick James Kirtley’s slower ball and was caught at mid off, Somerset lost four top-order wickets for 14 runs in four overs.Sussex skipper Mike Yardy, reprising the role he played so effectively in England’s World Cup triumph, picked up Nick Compton and James Hildreth as both missed attempted sweeps while Ed Joyce pulled off an excellent catch on the third man boundary to intercept Zander de Bruyn’s sliced drive.Opener Kieswetter and Jos Buttler revived Somerset with a fifth-wicket stand of 33 in four overs but when Buttler was brilliantly run out from backward point by Joyce the Somerset reply went into a steep decline with their last six wickets falling for just 13 runs in 29 balls.Kirtley picked up three for three in seven balls including Kieswetter, whose innings of 47 from 41 balls was ended by a superb running catch on the cover boundary by substitute fielder Ragheb Aga.Earlier, Luke Wright and Murray Goodwin had given Sussex’s innings the perfect platform with a stand of 58 in six overs for the first wicket. Wright hit 36 of his 39 runs from 19 balls in boundaries but Sussex lost wickets regularly after he sliced a drive to backward point.Goodwin hit a run-a-ball 30 but accurate bowling from left-arm spinner Murali Kartik and De Bruyn stifled Sussex’s momentum. Dwayne Smith, who scored 338 runs in last season’s competition, was leg before on the walk first ball to Kartik and none of the Sussex middle order seemed to get to grips with a two-paced pitch. But they were given some vital momentum at the end by Yasir Arafat, who later picked up two for nine from three overs, and wicketkeeper Andy Hodd who added 35 in the last three overs to give them something to defend.

Travel concerns ease for World Twenty20

Teams travelling to the World Twenty20 in West Indies have been able to revert to their original plans following the lifting of airspace restrictions over the UK and most of Europe. The ICC Board had endorsed a set of contingency plans to ensure that all players, team management, match officials, support staff and television crews and equipment can reach the Caribbean in time for the World Twenty20 in case the disruption had continued throughout this week. The most relieved team will be England who could have faced a journey over land and sea to Dubai in order to catch a charter flight to West Indies, but will now be able to depart London on Sunday.Ireland, Zimbabwe and the host team West Indies are in the Caribbean already, but the board heard arrangements were made so that seven of the remaining eight affected men’s teams – New Zealand are travelling via the United States – could be airlifted direct to the West Indies from Dubai with the aid of ICC partners, Emirates.”I’m delighted to say that the teams will now fly to the West Indies as originally scheduled,” said Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief executive. “I want to thank both Emirates and the ICC executive for working so hard to ensure that we had a back-up plan to transport teams to the Caribbean. One of those teams is Afghanistan, whose World Twenty20 squad has been grounded in Dubai because of the closure of airports across Europe have missed their warm-up matches in Trinidad and Tobago but are now expected to arrive in the next couple of days.An ash cloud from a volcanic eruption in Iceland had forced the closure of airspace over the UK and much of Europe since Thursday, resulting in the cancellation of thousands of flights and leaving hundreds of thousands of people stranded. Afghanistan are pooled with India and South Africa in Group C of the ICC World Twenty20, which begins on April 30.

Modi in Delhi, consults legal experts

Lalit Modi has made his first public appearance since the IPL final on Sunday, surfacing in Delhi where, it is learnt, he held discussions with two of India’s most respected legal brains, Ram Jethmalani and Harish Salve

Cricinfo staff28-Apr-2010Lalit Modi has made his first public appearance since the IPL final on Sunday, surfacing in Delhi where, it is learnt, he held discussions with two of India’s most respected legal brains, Ram Jethmalani and Harish Salve. The development added to speculation that he would challenge in court the Indian board’s decision to suspend him from all BCCI positions, including that of IPL chairman.Salve, though, refused to divulge any details, citing the client confidentiality. Modi had been incommunicado, barring a few Twitter updates, since Sunday night, when he brought the curtain down on the IPL with a dramatic, emotional speech at the awards ceremony. His tweets, too, have been uncharacteristically low-key, barring a couple that spoke about the IPL’s popularity. However, his brief appearance prompted some angry scenes as he snapped at the media scrum at the airport and the hotel. “Why aren’t you letting me reach my car? Why are you blocking me? Can’t you be gentlemen?” he asked. The media was gathered at the Taj Mansingh Hotel in New Delhi, which houses Salve’s offices, where Modi spent close to three hours. He then went to the Akbar Road residence of Jethmalani, a member of the upper house of Parliament. Modi spent an hour here before moving to the ITC Maurya Sheraton, hotel where his staying. His immediate course of action will be to respond to the charge-sheet and show-cause notice filed against him by the BCCI and the IPL governing council, which, after its meeting on Monday, gave Modi 15 days’ time to reply. His response will be studied by the board’s three-man disciplinary committee – comprising president Shashank Manohar, Arun Jaitley and Chirayu Amin, the interim IPL chairman – and its findings will be tabled before the BCCI’s working committee.Modi essentially needs to react to the five charges pressed against him – and detailed on Monday by Manohar – after what the board felt were serious allegations of wrongdoing by Modi and his team. The charges are the initial franchise bids for Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab, the rigging of franchise bids in 2010, the sale of broadcasting and internet rights and his “behavioral pattern”.

Tottenham transfer news on Eriksen

A Tottenham insider has claimed that Christian Eriksen could now return to Hotspur Way to train, with a potential view of signing a contract.

The Lowdown: Eriksen return?

The 29-year-old captured the attention of the whole world when he collapsed on the pitch against Finland while playing for Denmark at Euro 2020 after a cardiac arrest, and there have been question marks since over whether he will have to retire for his own health and safety.

He has not played at all since then, and Inter Milan announced that they had terminated his contract at the San Siro earlier this month.

However, The Athletic have reported that Eriksen’s agent Martin Schoots has said he has already had offers from as many as four clubs around Europe, suggesting that the playmaker’s footballing career may not be over yet.

The Latest: Insider on Eriksen

Speaking to Football Insider, Spurs insider John Wenham – who regularly breaks news about the north London club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels – has claimed that Eriksen could now come back to his former club in order to train with them, before potentially being offered a contract. The insider explained:

“We don’t know the ins and outs of his medical situation.

“If he’s not allowed to play in Serie A I don’t know why the Premier League would be any different.

“The medical advice in the top leagues is the same I would imagine. I would expect it is a bit different in the Netherlands or somewhere like that.

“If he wanted to come back and he felt that was the right thing to do, we should always have space for him.

“He’s a magician and he’s better than a lot of the players we have.

“Conte obviously knows him. Maybe he could come over and do a couple of weeks training with the club.

“I could see that happening.

Obviously, it’s a big step to then signing a contract but who knows.”

The Verdict: Do it

Given his past connections to Tottenham, Eriksen should be invited to train with them if he is looking to get back on the pitch as soon as he can. If he impresses, they should seriously consider offering him a deal.

Of course, he is a player that Antonio Conte knows very well, so the Italian likely knows how to get the best out of him. Also, at 29 years of age, Eriksen still has a few more years left in the tank if he can get back playing professionally.

With rumours that Giovani Lo Celso could be leaving as well, the Denmark maestro would provide Conte with another good option in midfield, should he be able to get back to his best.
