Spurs linked to Monaco’s Benoit Badiashile

Tottenham Hotspur could form a formidable defensive duo after being linked with a transfer move for Monaco ace Benoit Badiashile.

What’s the story?

According to Italian outlet CalcioMercato, Spurs are ‘on the trail’ of the highly-rated 20-year-old ahead of a potential offer over the coming months.

New Spurs manager Antonio Conte is renowned for building multiple successful teams on solid centre-back partnerships, and the addition of Badiashile may allow him to do the same in north London.

Imagine him and Cristiano Romero

After rising through the ranks at boyhood club Monaco, Badiashile has firmly established himself as one of Ligue 1’s most promising young talents.

The France Under-21 international played a pivotal part for Niko Kovac’s charges last term as they battled their way to a third-place finish, qualifying for the Champions League as a result.

As per WhoScored, Badiashile averaged 1.7 interceptions per league game in 2020/21 after making 35 appearances, a whopping 2.8 clearances and 0.3 blocks.

Those statistics placed him in the top three for each metric when compared to his teammates, highlighting his influence over proceedings for the principality club.

Badiashile’s outstanding displays have caught the eye of several impressed onlookers, including Monaco Vice President Oleg Petrov, who labelled the £34m-rated gem a “great talent” before lauding his technical ability.

“Very good technically, very humble, very fast, gives a lot of comforts when he plays but still very young,” said Petrov.

“For a player of his age, playing all the games as a starter, it is a huge opportunity for him to develop into a player of the highest calibre. He is a very hard worker so we are very happy to have him.”

Under Conte’s tutelage, partnerships between the likes of Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini, David Luiz and Cesar Azpilicueta and Milan Skriniar and Stefan de Vrij have formed the foundations for title-winning campaigns.

And with the talented Cristian Romano already at the Italian tactician’s disposal, Badiashile’s arrival could be the start of the next defensive duo to rise to stardom under the 52-year-old’s control.

Newcastle: Caulkin rules out Fonseca

Journalist George Caulkin has dropped a major update, regarding Newcastle’s pursuit of a new manager.

What’s the talk?

The Athletic reporter has claimed that PIF will not be appointing Portuguese head coach Paulo Fonseca to replace Steve Bruce at St. James’ Park.

A recent report stated that Newcastle were set to offer him a contract after he impressed in an interview with the club, but Caulkin has made it clear that he will not be in the dugout on Tyneside anytime soon.

He told the Pod on the Tyne podcast for The Athletic:

“I have been told that it won’t be Fonseca; I’ve been told that now, a couple of times, but I’m not saying that as a definitive thing.”

Buzzing

Newcastle fans could leave fans buzzing as it appears to increase the chances of the club sealing a deal for Ajax manager Erik ten Hag. The previous report made it seem as though Fonseca was the favourite for the role, with the club willing to offer him a deal.

However, Caulkin’s claim leaves the rumour pretty much dead in the water.

It does not get much clearer than ‘it won’t be Fonseca’ and this leaves Newcastle fans to get excited about who it could be instead.

The Portuguese head coach has an impressive C.V and PIF ultimately opting against a swoop for his services could hint at the standard of manager they believe they can attract.

Fonseca won 1.77 points per game with Roma in the Serie A during a two-year spell with the Italian giants and won three league titles in three years at Shakhtar Donetsk prior to his spell in Italy.

This suggests that he can handle the pressure of expectation at tops clubs, with impressive results on the whole for Shakhtar and Roma.

The club have been linked with a move for Ajax manager ten Hag and this update on Fonseca could play into the reports that the Magpies are keen on the Dutchman, which fans will be delighted with.

He has won two Eredivisie titles with Ajax and reached the Champions League quarter-final and semi-final, despite selling the likes of Frenkie de Jong, Hakim Ziyech and Donny van de Beek along the way.

Ten Hag has won 2.15 points per game across 204 Eredivisie matches in charge of Utrecht and Ajax and his proven track record of success under difficult circumstances shows that he could be a great appointment. This is why Newcastle fans could be buzzing with this update from Caulkin, as it leaves the door ajar for the Dutchman to walk through.

Ex-Spurs man calls for Gil start

Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Alan Hutton has called for Bryan Gil to be unleashed on Thursday.

The Lowdown: Barely seen so far

One of five summer incomings at Spurs this summer, Gil has only appeared for two minutes in Premier League action this season after swapping Sevilla for London.

Gil, 20, started both games of the Europa Conference League qualifying success over Portugeuse side Pacos Ferreira but wasn’t called upon off the bench in Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Crystal Palace.

With Heung-Min Son and Steven Bergwijn out, Spurs struggled to break down Palace’s defence and lacked any creativity in the final third, but those injuries mean the Spaniard could now start in France.

The Latest: Hutton calls for Gil involvement

Speaking to Football Insider, former Spurs defender Alan Hutton has claimed the barely seen summer signing must start on Thursday night against Rennes.

Hutton believes Gil could help Nuno Espirito Santo with his creativity and the Spanish winger has the ability to ‘unlock defences’.

“I like him. When he signed, I obviously looked him up and he looks really tricky and really good on the ball.

“He’s a player that can split open defences, and probably what they were crying out for the other day against Palace,” Hutton said.

“It would be nice to see him against Rennes and beyond because I think he could really unlock defences in the Premier League.”

The Verdict: Gil could make a difference

Last season in La Liga, Gil made 29 appearances for Sevilla, scoring three and assisting three times to help the club qualify for the Champions League.

Hailed a ‘very talented player’ by Kevin Campbell, Gil’s talent is likely to be showcased in Thursday’s Europa Conference League group stage qualifier and, if impressive against Rennes, will warrant the chance to feature in Sunday’s big game with Chelsea.

The absence of Son and Bergwijn means the door is well and truly open for the 20-year-old to impress and become a first-team regular for his new club so early in his career.

Everton set to revisit Maitland-Niles deal

Everton are ‘prepared to make a winter swoop’ for Arsenal’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles, as per TRANSFERmarketWEB.

The lowdown

Everton tried to arrange a loan with an option to buy in the final stages of the summer transfer window, but Arsenal blocked the move.

Maitland-Niles was keen on joining the Blues and took to Instagram to publicly express his frustration (via The Athletic).

Having been told he was part of Mikel Arteta’s plans for the season ahead, he’s featured in four of the Gunners’ six Premier League matches, starting once.

The 24-year-old has two years left on his Arsenal contract and is valued at £14.4million by Transfermarkt.

The latest

The report says that Maitland-Niles very much remains on Everton’s radar.

Intriguingly, the report says Rafael Benitez likely views him not as a midfielder but as ‘a possible successor for Seamus Coleman’ at right-back.

It remains to be seen, though, whether Arsenal will be willing to sanction his departure this time around. They’ve already let Hector Bellerin join Real Betis on a season-long loan.

The verdict

Everton’s failure to sign a right-back in the summer has already hurt them in the early weeks of the season. With Coleman sustaining an injury, Ben Godfrey has had to fill in, and he doesn’t look entirely comfortable in the role.

It’s important that they do get a deal done in January, but it’s hard to see Arsenal agreeing to part with a valuable squad option midway through the campaign.

In other news, this man came under fire for his performance against Norwich.

Everton eye Rangers defender Patterson

Everton have had to work with minimal finances in the ongoing transfer window and it’s so far led them to a grand total of four new acquisitions.

Demarai Gray remains the most impressive capture after his first goal for the club last weekend but there is still plenty of work for the Toffees to undertake.

What’s the word?

One of the biggest priorities this summer has been addressing their limited options at right-back.

Seamus Coleman is out of contract next year and consequently, Everton have targeted the likes of Denzel Dumfries, who has joined Inter, and Aurelio Buta of Royal Antwerp.

The last name on the right-back shortlist is Rangers youngster Nathan Patterson.

The 19-year-old is behind Marcus Tavernier in the pecking order at Ibrox and Benitez looks keen to capitalise on that.

According to The Athletic’s Jordan Campbell, they made an offer for the defender that went in on Friday.

However, fresh reports believe that bid was actually rejected.

Fans must be excited

After missing out on Dumfries to Inter Milan, supporters had every right to be frustrated.

We know the Toffees don’t have much to spend this summer but the Dutch wing-back only moved for a total of around €12.5m.

In a regular window, that would have been a piece of cake for Everton who are used to spending hefty sums.

Focusing on Buta as an alternative hardly pulled up any trees but Patterson seems to fit the bill more.

The teenager already has experience of British football and has the commitment and will to learn that would enthuse those who watch him play at Goodison Park.

Capped two times by Scotland, Patterson doesn’t actually have too much experience under his belt. The full-back has only played for Rangers on 17 occasions but has caught the eye when taking to the field.

He was described as “outstanding” by David Weir after an Old Firm derby last term, hailed for his ability to play without any fear.

Coleman is a fearless character at full-back and if they can eventually replace him with a player of a similar personality, it should make the Irishman’s departure a seamless one.

That provides another reason for fans to be pleased about their interest in the youngster but the main point is that he can defend and attack astutely.

During Rangers’ Europa League campaign last season, Patterson won a mightily impressive 2.3 tackles and made 1.5 interceptions a match.

Furthermore, the full-back has produced 0.8 key passes in the Scottish Premiership so far this term.

He is a rampant threat down the right-hand side and possesses all the energy that made Coleman such a wily character during his prime.

Gers’ Kamara refuses to commit to Ibrox

Glen Kamara has refused to commit his future to Glasgow Rangers while on international duty with Finland, saying he will wait and see what happens in regards to a new deal.

The Lowdown: Kamara future unsure

£5.4m-valued Kamara (Transfermarkt) was the subject of plenty of interest from the Premier League during the summer transfer window, including from former club Arsenal (Football Insider).

However, he remained at Ibrox in the end, although he has now provided an insight into his thinking.

The Latest: Kamara refuses to commit future

Speaking while away with Finland, Kamara did not close any doors in regards to what could happen. He said (via Ibrox News):

“From what I know, there has been some interest from different teams in different leagues.

“If something had happened, then it would have happened. But it didn’t happen, and the focus is on Rangers, which is something I look forward to.

“There have been, talks and they have been ongoing. We will see what happens. I can’t really tell you much, and I can’t really say more about that.

“Let’s see what happens.”

The Verdict: Worrying for Gers

We are approaching an important moment in the career of Kamara at Rangers. At the end of this campaign, he will have just one year left on his contract with the 55-time Scottish champions (Transfermarkt) – it is time to decide whether to sign a new deal or seek pastures new.

After impressing both with the Gers last term as they won the Premiership for the first time in ten years and with Finland during Euro 2020, Kamara has made himself an attractive proposition for a number of clubs. There is only so much he can achieve north of the border, and he may well be weighing his options as he deliberates a new deal.

Aston Villa: Fans react to coaching staff update

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith may prioritise trying to bring in a coach who has worked in Europe, as reported by The Daily Mail’s Tom Collomosse on Twitter.

Recently suffering from the departures of both John Terry and Richard O’Kelly from the coaching staff, there is a void at Villa which will urgently need to be filled as we embark on the new campaign.

Now, the former Brentford manager looks set to start making tracks in regard to filling the role. Speaking to his Twitter following, Daily Mail journalist Collomosse stated:

“Would expect Smith to add to his #avfc coaching staff after departures of Terry and O’Kelly. Perhaps an innovative appt – someone who has worked in other leagues, different cultures – rather than someone steeped in UK game”.

Taking a step away from their usual approach, this news is bound to create a sense of intrigue within the next few weeks at Villa Park.

In light of this news, loads of Aston Villa diehards took to social media to offer up their opinions on the new coaching pursuit.
