Bale out, Benzema in: Barcelona-Real Madrid combined XI

Goal selects a combined XI of the two Spanish giants as they prepare to battle it out in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey

La Liga leaders Barcelona will welcome arch-rivals Real Madrid to Camp Nou on Wednesday evening to contest the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final showdown.

The Catalan side have been victorious in the competition in each of the last four years, failing to make the final just once in the last eight seasons.

Real Madrid will be looking to avenge their 5-1 demolition in October that ultimately led to the dismissal of coach Julen Lopetegui.

Both sides are sporting injury issues heading into the match, but it will be no less of an epic display of some of the world's greats facing off with each other at Camp Nou.

Goal has rounded up the best-combined XI of both sides – and there are a fair few surprises in the mix…

GettyGK | Marc-Andre Ter Stegen | Barcelona

Jasper Cillessen would typically have started the match as the Barcelona goalkeeper, but the Netherlands international has been ruled out of the clash with a muscle injury.

Ter Stegen, therefore, will be drafted in for his first Copa del Rey appearance this season and should follow on from his fine La Liga form.

Thibaut Courtois and Keylor Navas have been impressive for Real Madrid, but Ter Stegen has been a different class for the league leaders, and gets a nod in the XI.

AdvertisementGettyDEF | Dani Carvajal | Real MadridHaving to decide on the defence is difficult considering the choices, but Dani Carvajal gets the right-back nod ahead of Barcelona duo Sergi Roberto and Nelson Semedo, who have not been particularly remarkable this season.Getty ImagesDEF | Sergio Ramos | Real Madrid

Ramos has remained a sturdy rock at the heart of the Blancos defence while he has again been a prolific goalscorer this season as well.

He has scored 10 goals this season, equalling his best return in a campaign, and netted a double in the Copa del Rey quarter-final first leg against Girona.

Zimbabwe finally confirm Pakistan tour

Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has confirmed the upcoming tour to Pakistan against the advice of the country’s Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC). The board’s final decision comes after three days of debate, which began on Thursday when ZC issued a press release suspending the tour and 20 minutes later sent an email retracting it. In the interim, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had told journalists that ZC had been in contact with it and had reassured that the tour would take place as scheduled. The ICC, meanwhile, has decided not to appoint its match officials for the series after receiving a report from its security consultant. It had already made provision for the PCB to use its own umpires and match referees in such a case.ESPNcricinfo understands that Zimbabwe’s players were made to sign indemnity forms after their country’s foreign affairs ministry advised that a visit to Pakistan would not be safe. As a result, the SRC would not give permission for the tour to take place unless the players were going of their own accord, as the forms now state.

Aleem Dar, Tiffin among officials for series

With the ICC refusing to send its own officials for the tour, the Pakistan Cricket Board released its list of match officials for the two T20 internationals and three ODIs. The list includes Aleem Dar, who is a part of the ICC’s Elite Panel, will officiate in the first ODI, while Zimbabwe umpire Russell Tiffin will be an on-field umpire for all three ODIs. The other officiating umpires are Ahsan Raza, Shozab Raza, Ahmed Shahab and Khalid Mahmood. Azhar Khan has been named match referee for all games.
Ahsan Raza was injured during the terror attacks on the Sri Lanka team in 2009, and had to undergo surgery to repair a collapsed lung and a damaged liver.

Several players were hesitant to make the trip, with a few even considering pulling out, but concerns over the impact that would have on the future of their careers forced them to change their minds. All 16 squad members, which includes six returnees and one new cap, have agreed to travel to Pakistan for the two T20 and three ODI series which begins on May 22.The visit makes Zimbabwe the first Test-playing nation to tour Pakistan since 2009, when an attack on the Sri Lankan team bus resulted in the suspension of international cricket from Pakistan. Afghanistan and Kenya have both toured Pakistan in that time, without incident.Zimbabwe have been promised VIP security which includes armed guards, an armed vehicle escort and helicopter monitoring of their travel in Lahore, the only city they will visit. An advance delegation of ZC officials visited Pakistan in the first week of May for a thorough explanation of the measures that had been put in place to protect the players and were satisfied with what they were shown.Despite that, the international player body FICA said their security report revealed that the risks of touring Pakistan were “unmanageable.”The series will be Zimbabwe’s first post the 2015 World Cup and first without Brendan Taylor in seven years.

Maharaj's ten sinks Cobras

Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj finished with a career-best match haul of 10 for 145 to help set up Dolphins’ eight-wicket victory against Cape Cobras at Newlands. The win carried Dolphins up to second in the Sunfoil Series table.Cobras, opting to bat, were shot out for 156 in their first innings, with no batsman able to raise a much-needed half-century. The team failed to string together any meaningful partnership, as Maharaj collected 6 for 58 to run through the line-up in 43.5 overs.Fifties from Imraan Khan (58) and Divan van Wyk (51) set Dolphins a solid platform in their reply, but from 256 for 4, the team collapsed and lost their last six wickets for just 14 runs, as Dane Paterson (5 for 60) and Rory Kleinveldt got into the middle order and tail. However, Cobras had still conceded a 114-run lead, and despite the efforts of Stiaan van Zyl in the second innings, they couldn’t muster a fightback. Van Zyl’s ton, a 163-ball 107, had Cobras at a promising 196 for 2, but his dismissal in the 55th over triggered a slide which saw the team lose their last eight wickets for just 57 runs. Maharaj (4 for 87) and Daryn Dupavillon (4 for 47) shared eight wickets between them.It meant Dolphins needed just 140 for the win, and an unbeaten 59 from Imraan helped the team amass that total in 41.1 overs.

South Africa look to quell ‘Maroon Fire’

Match factsWednesday, January 14
Start time 1800 local (1500 GMT)Big Picture Never mind a few days, what a difference a change in format can make. From being dominated in the Tests to dominating in the T20s, West Indies have done a complete 180 degree turn thanks largely to Chris Gayle.Although he described himself as “not 100% fit” Gayle has been 100% merciless on an inexperienced South Africa attack and answered his own call for consistency by setting up a successful chase for the second time in Johannesburg. That it was also the world-record chase only speaks to the impact he can have on a team.He has left his team-mates questioning what they will do without him and South Africa what to do against him, and at least one of those parties aren’t too interested in finding the answer yet. South Africa have seemingly lost their appetite for this contest and will effectively field a side of reserves for the dead rubber. In addition to resting their big names – Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers, Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel – and being forced to leave out JP Duminy and Quinton de Kock through injury, they have given regular T20 captain Faf du Plessis the day off as well. Justin Ontong, long-time Cobras captain, takes charge and called it “probably the proudest moment in my career”. If he can conjure up a way to curb Gayle, it will be that and much more.South Africa will hope to finally knock West Indies off their stride in Durban•Associated PressForm guide South Africa LLLLW
West Indies WWWLLIn the spotlight After being on the receiving end of a Gayle-storm twice in the two matches. South Africa’s bowlers need to come up with a plan to keep West Indies’ main man quiet. They have struggled to hit the find the right lengths, either by erroneously persisting with short balls or feeding full tosses as their attempts at yorkers go wrong, and may need to stick to the simplicity du Plessis hinted at in the lead up to the series – good length, outside off – to restrict their opposition.Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo have not had the opportunity to do much with the bat, thanks to Gayle’s dominance and they have their last chance to make an impact in this series. Neither is part of West Indies’ ODI or World Cup squads and if they want to express how they feel about that omission on the field, this is their window.Team news South Africa will field a third captain this year – after Hashim Amla led in Tests and Faf du Plessis took over for the T20s – with Ontong given the leadership duties. He will have to inspire a squad who have been on the receiving end of what du Plessis kindly termed two “hidings” with the knowledge there is very little to be gained from this fixture. Rilee Rossouw should be given another chance to show what he can do at the top of the order and, without too many bowling options, South Africa will simply have to hope the men they have can tighten up, especially Kyle Abbott who is part of the World Cup squad.South Africa: (possible) 1 Morne van Wyk (wk), 2 Rilee Rossouw, 3 Farhaan Behardien, 4 David Miller, 5 Justin Ontong (capt), 6 Wayne Parnell, 7 David Wiese, 8 Kyle Abbott, 9 Kagiso Rabada/Aaron Phangiso, 10 Marchant de Lange, 11 Imran TahirThe series is wrapped up so West Indies may want to experiment by giving players like Carlos Brathwaite or Andre Fletcher a go but that may take second priority against the prospect of whitewashing South Africa. That could mean they will go with the same XI that did duty at the Wanderers.West Indies: (possible) 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Dwayne Smith, 3 Marlon Samuels, 4 Kieron Pollard, 5 Andre Russell, 6 Dwayne Bravo, 7 Darren Sammy (capt), 8 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 9 Jason Holder, 10 Sulieman Benn, 11 Sheldon CottrellPitch and conditions “I don’t think the conditions will be as good as they were at the Wanderers,” Ontong said. By that, he means they won’t be as fast. Run-scoring may be more laboured on a slower surface, which will make for less of a spectacle and more hard work, if the rain does not intervene. Thunderstorms are forecast from 5pm.Stats and Trivia There have been 11 T20s played at Kingsmead and only one match has seen totals over 200, when India defended 218 against England at the World T20 in 2007. The chasing team has won just four times at this venue. South Africa have only played four other three-match T20 series and, to date, have not been whitewashed.Quotes “I don’t think we can play the way they play their cricket. We have to look at our strengths and the way we go about our business. There was nothing wrong with the batting in both of the games. We just need more work on the bowling front.”
“It’s not often that a team that is ranked below a top team whitewashes them so that’s the focus. We are not going to relax. We are saving the celebration for after the next match.”

Ajmal return buoys Pakistan in series decider

Match facts

Saturday, August 30, 2014
Start time 1000 local (0430 GMT)Will the pressure of having his action questioned weigh on Saeed Ajmal?•AFP

Big picture

A gap of three days between games can sometimes be a luxury in the manic schedule of an international cricketer. For Pakistan, the break and the ensuing change of scenery as the series shifts to Dambulla, is a chance to process the implosion in Hambantota. Their collapse gave Sri Lanka another shot at remedying an average record of ODI series wins at home. For Pakistan, the series so far has been a tale of two chases, similar in their setting but vastly different in outcome – the first, conjured from thin air by Fawad Alam and Sohaib Maqsood, the second blown up in smoke by Sri Lanka’s spinners on a helpful track. But the second ODI in Hambantota wasn’t just about the batting collapse. The Saeed Ajmal-sized hole in the Pakistan line-up could not be filled by the bowlers, especially towards the end of Sri Lanka’s innings and Misbah-ul-Haq will know that the game slipped away from the side over the course of a mere 18 overs with the bat and in the field. While Sri Lanka were batting, Pakistan gave away 101 runs in the final ten overs and during their chase, went from 192 for 4 to 233 all out in just eight overs.Pakistan, however, will be boosted by the return of Ajmal after his bowling action was tested in Brisbane, and may drop a fast bowler to accommodate him. However, it is the need to find consistency in the batting line-up that will be Pakistan’s biggest challenge.Despite having levelled the series, Sri Lanka have their own set of glaring problems. The failures of Tillakaratne Dilshan and Upul Tharanga – who have stands of 18 and 14 – have been masked by the fluency Mahela Jayawardene and Angelo Mathews’ remarkable form in the middle order. Lasith Malinga’s yorkers haven’t been as effective as they usually are and Nuwan Kulasekara, although marginally economical than Malinga, is still wicketless.

Form guide

Sri Lanka WLLWL (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Pakistan LWLWW

In the spotlight

The lack of form of the fast-bowling attack has been one of the biggest concerns for Sri Lanka in this series. Kulasekara (6.15 runs per over) and Malinga (7.32) have been expensive so far in the series and the pair have just three wickets between them. Kulasekara has not picked up a wicket in seven matches since May 2014. Sri Lanka’s spinners, who now carry the chunk of the responsibility, have been given some relief by Mathews and Thisara Perera but the fast bowlers will still need to step up.Saeed Ajmal has spent most of the last week getting his action tested in Brisbane. That he will play on Saturday is almost certain, especially after Misbah-ul-Haq’s statement that the side had missed the bowler on the turning track at Hambantota, especially in the Powerplays and towards the end of the innings. There will be added scrutiny on his action and on how he has coped with the doubts over his game. Ajmal was last reported for a suspect action in April 2009 in the middle of an ODI series with Australia in the UAE. While he was cleared a month later, the bowler kept up his miserly form for the rest of the matches, with figures of 0 for 42 (in nine overs), 0 for 20 and 1 for 40 (10 overs).

Team news

Sri Lanka are likely to stick with their misfiring opening combination and may field the same XI from Hambantota.Sri Lanka (probable) 1 Upul Tharanga, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Angelo Mathews (capt), 6 Ashan Priyanjan 7 Seekkuge Prasanna, 8 Thisara Perara, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Lasith Malinga, 11 Rangana Herath/Suraj RandivWith Ajmal returning to the side, Pakistan may opt to drop either Junaid Khan or Mohammad Irfan. Sharjeel Khan, who replaced Younis Khan in the batting line-up, is likely to keep his place.Pakistan (probable) 1 Ahmed Shehzad, 3 Sharjeel Khan 3 Mohammad Hafeez, 4 Umar Akmal (wk), 5 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 6 Fawad Alam, 7 Sohaib Maqsood, 8 Shahid Afridi, 9 Saeed Ajmal, 10 Wahab Riaz, 11 Mohammad Irfan/Junaid Khan

Pitch and conditions

Rain is unlikely to be a concern in Dambulla and the teams will instead have to get their estimate of the pitch correct. There has been just one ODI at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in the last two years in which teams scored 211 and 126 in a rain-hit match. Shahid Afridi will have fond memories of this ground, however, after his 60-ball 124 against Bangladesh helped Pakistan to a 139-run win in the Asia Cup 2010.

Stats and trivia

  • The two captains, Angelo Mathews and Misbah-ul-Haq, find themselves on a unique list of batsmen with most runs in ODI cricket without a century. While Misbah has scored 37 ODI fifties and 4576 runs in 148 matches, Mathews has 22 fifties and 3013 runs in 132 games.
  • Dambulla was also the venue for the most successful chase in Sri Lanka, between the two teams in August 2009.
  • Junaid Khan and Mohammad Irfan have had an ordinary series so far, giving away plenty of runs without too many wickets. In two games, Junaid Khan has conceded 139 runs in 17 overs at an economy rate of 8.17 and just one wicket. Mohammad Irfan has two wickets but has given away 113 runs in two games at a rate of 5.94

Quotes

“We know that Ajmal is a good bowler and that he’s going to strengthen their bowling even more. But we know that he’s a good bowler and we’ve played him well in the recent past. We’ll look to play him positively and try to score runs against him.”

Gayle hopes to find right combination with Smith

Chris Gayle is aiming to forge a solid opening combination with Dwayne Smith as West Indies prepare for the defence of their World Twenty20 title with a couple of warm-up games against Ireland, starting on Wednesday in Jamaica.Gayle, who is raring to return from a hamstring injury sustained in India that ruled him out of the New Zealand tour, said he was pleased with what he saw of Smith from the Nagico Super50 where he was named the Most Valuable Player. With Johnson Charles and Lendl Simmons also in the running to open, Gayle said the competition for top-order spots was healthy.”This partnership’s a reality. He (Smith) is in good form and it would be nice to have a Dwayne Smith atop your batting order. He can get the pressure off you,” Gayle told ESPNcricinfo. “His form is spot on and we’re all happy to have him back. It would give me room to bat a bit more openly.”Gayle admitted West Indies needed to improve their batting up front and lay a proper foundation, something they struggled to do in India and New Zealand. “I want to get off to a good start and set the foundation. This is critical,” he said. “There’s a good, fast outfield here (at Sabina) and there’s some bounce on the pitch so there is something for the bowlers as well. I practiced with Jamaica here for the Super50 also.”Gayle said he expected the players to step up in front of the home crowd, pointing to the returning Marlon Samuels and Krishmar Santokie as some of the players he believed would fare well.”We have Santokie, Marlon’s back and (Andre) Russell too. Santokie’s done pretty well and he was the best bowler in the CPL so it’s good for him to be given a crack at it in front his home-crowd.”This is a big boost for us going into the World T20s. West Indies have a lot of cricket to play leading into this tournament so we’re just looking to get past this (Ireland) series.”Gayle said Ireland were a plucky team that had proven in the past that they shouldn’t be underestimated. On his own condition, Gayle revealed he was “99% fit” but maintained that he would only gradually ease back into the team after assessing his body.”It’s good to be back again and I’m looking forward to the first game and getting that feeling back out there in the middle again. I haven’t trained this intensely for a couple months so I hope to get a kickstart and get back into the groove of things as soon as possible.”
